Our friend Aaron has long-told us about a mythical film, so amazing in its nature, so unique in its vision, that mortal man is forever changed just by letting his eyes fall upon its imagery.Just kidding! Aaron really does love Chungking Express (and he might have oversold it a little), but we sat down and watched it and ended up having a lively discussion about it!It's all in our latest Criterion episode.

IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE mitverfolgt.

In this episode, he openly talks about what he discovered on the street after parties and how his observations flew into his movie "Beer! Beer! (2019)." While he wants to depart from the identity-based way of thinking, being an Asian in Germany often challenges him - "it is very much like being a queer person in China." The director of "Mama Rainbow (2012)", a documentary movie that explores the struggles and happiness of Chinese mothers with queer children, also shares his own coming-out story. Growing up, he discovered his sexuality through a movie star and was saved by the legendary actress Faye Wong in the boarding school, as a roommate confronted him. I finally got to sit down with my dear friend and the ever so talented Nate Morton, drummer for the hit NBC TV show, "The Voice"As you'll hear, Nate is super humble, very smart, funny as hell and man, can he tell a story!! We literally talked for 2 1/2 hours and the time flew!! **hence the reason this is a 2 Part episode** We begin with his early childhood in this episode, which is Part 1 of a two part episode. From there we follow his path from high school to college at the University of Maryland to gain an engineering degree. That decision didn't last long and he was finally Berklee bound to get a performance degree. You'll hear about his drum instructor Grant Menefee, who not only went to Berklee himself but prepared Nate for his years to come at this prestigious music school. Nate credits a lot of his success to Grant preparing him plus the hard work that Nate hisself did based on Grant's advise.  We'll hear more about Nate's time at Berklee, his eventual gig with Faye Wong and their residency gig in Hong Kong. A couple of years are spent in Boston after the Faye Wong gig before making the big decision to move to Los Angeles. We end this part of the episode talking about the connections he first made when arriving in Los Angeles and ultimately, the name Barry Squire comes up because he was/is known as the match-maker of talent to many of the biggest touring acts. If an artist needs a top notch player, Barry Squire helps get the right person for the gig. Part 2 of this episode focuses more on Nate's early days in Los Angeles and we walk through his timeline of auditions, touring gigs with well-known artists, up to his current seat as the drummer for "The Voice".Enjoy and thank you for listening!! Létezik szexibb film a Csungking expressznél? China has found success in exporting domestic technology and consumer goods. However, its culture exportation has not achieved the same success. The language barrier may be an issue, yet South Korean and Japanese films and music have managed to overcome it and found success in exporting cultural products like video games, anime, and movies. So what gives? On this episode of the Middle Earth Podcast, the guests discuss the recent successes and failures of China’s culture going abroad. This episode was recorded during a panel at the WISE Festival 2019 at the Ullens Center for Contemporary Art in Beijing. Featuring: Emily Xueni Jin – science fiction translator Emily’s email Tom Simpson – senior director of the China-Britain Business Council Tom’s LinkedIn George van Wetering – composer and event organizer George’s website And Sha Hua (华沙), host of the talk, and a journalist for the Handelsblatt Sha’s Twitter Three main takeaways from this week’s episode:     从这期访谈中,我们总结出三个主要观点: 1) Yes, the language barrier is an issue, but it is not the only one. If a Chinese indie band or film producer wants to have their work paid attention to by Western audiences, they have to upload the art onto Western social media platforms (YouTube, Vimeo, Soundcloud, etc). Circumnavigating the Great Firewall of China makes this difficult, as well as the need to interact with fans in English. At the same time, non-Chinese individuals aren’t willing (or don’t know how) to surf the Chinese internet. But there is evidence that the language barrier can be successfully traversed: The first video to hit a billion views on YouTube was “Gangnam Style” by the South Korean singer PSY. Yet, in defense of China’s producers, the domestic market is such a huge market compared with South Korea’s that Chinese artists and producers don’t necessarily need to go global in order to survive. 2) There is still Orientalism and a lack of general knowledge about China in the West. As science-fiction writer Emily Xueni Jin pointed out, when you need to translate a Chinese concept or a mythical beast into English, should you borrow its Western equivalent or write it in pinyin and describe it? There is often a tough choice to make: to balance a “Chinese style” to highlight your stylistic differences, or to use an approach that could be construed as Westernization or Orientalism to garner a larger audience. 3) China manages to export three types of cultural products. When you look at the cultural products China sells abroad, only three types really stand out. The first is classical paintings and calligraphy. Given the lack of interest in these things among China’s own domestic youth, it prompts the question of how successful they could be abroad. The second is science-fiction works, which, surprisingly, work really well abroad. Perhaps this is because questions about the future of our planet, and how we should embrace technology, are universally understood. The last (and least known) is foreign films. A few years ago, some companies decided to invest in them. The Academy Award–winning film for Best Picture, Green Book, had a backing by Alibaba Pictures. Maybe after investing and learning for several years, Chinese companies will know how to make a global blockbuster film. One could make the argument that films from the 1990s are examples of China’s globalizing culture industry. However, films that toe the line of acceptability are being produced in far lower volume, and face greater levels of censorship. Recommended watching and listening: Her (2013). Wolf Warrior (2015). The science-fiction short story “The Facecrafter,” by Anna Wu. The science-fiction book The Waste Tide, by Chen Qiufan. The pop singer Faye Wong 王菲. The artists Fang Lijun, Yue Minjun, and Wang Guangyi. The film producer David Haymen. The “Four Generations Challenge” meme.

This week, we continue with our Spotlight on Nobuo Uematsu. Enjoy!   PART II   Last week we looked at the beginnings of Nobuo Uematsu’s career, from being hired at Square Co. to his first two masterpieces that we can agree on with his soundtracks of FF4 and FF6. As a reminder, this is a special kind of Spotlight, one where you sit back, and enjoy the music.   Let’s continue from 1995. Chrono Trigger, the one fucking game that we need to play but can’t because of the official order of things, was a gigantic project for Square, and is often cited with FF6 as the greatest RPG game ever. Most of the music was composed by veteran composer Yasunori Mitsuda, but Nobuo would leave his mark on the classic game as well, composing 8 of the tracks for the game. Here’s the haunting theme “Silent Light”:   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9T4WB2zfmps   No, no no no. Silent LIGHT. Not Silent night… Jesus.. That was Josef Mohr.   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ccv48ZiX1I&index=10&list=PLTHOcnhIuPOvEJd8WJI6kaJbQG0NeKtaY   1996 would be kind-of a dud year for Uematsu. The little known game “Dynami Tracer” would be his only solo work in 1996, and it’s definitely not one of his better soundtracks… But we wouldn’t wanna keep you wanting! Here’s a little piece called...music factory.   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x-T4JU01UoA&list=PL70567EDAFF96BD39&index=3   We’re not gonna even bother with his next work, contributing to the album for Front Mission: Gun Hazard with a half a billion of other Square composers. His next game was 1997’s fucking Final Fantasy 7. We can’t give you just one. Here’s his band, the black mages’ version of perhaps the most popular FF7 song One Winged Angel:   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LHzEaKFqboI   One of the most beautiful pieces from the game, Aerith’s theme, taking a cue from Terra’s theme in the last game, here’s an orchestral version of that song:   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NU0TcnsLop8   We can’t forget Kaleb’s favorite. This is Cosmo Canyon.   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qBk58XDx5gY   His next game would be that of FInal Fantasy 8. Nobuo has stated that with 8’s soundtrack, he worked hard to reflect the charcter’s emotions at certain parts of the game. It would be one of the more successful FF soundtracks with what is now as of 2016 the second-biggest video game music single ever, Faye Wong’s “Eyes on Me” selling over 500,000 copies.   Now… Final Fantasy VIII… This is a tough one because neither of us really care for the soundtrack of FF8. There’s something about the tone of the instrumentation and the terrible engrish lyrics of “eyes on me” that leaves us with a bad taste in our mouths, but no one can deny the power of the opener, Liberi Fatali!!!!   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j4MMhY4RyxQ   Eh, fuck it, we’ll give you “Eyes on Me”.   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ANw53vQFJeM   Along this stream of Final Fantasy games, the often-underappreciated Final Fantasy IX would follow. FF9 would take a departure from the previous games with the soundtrack offering a more medieval scottish highlands inspired milieu. Nobuo would do the entire 160 tracks on his own for this game. Here’s one of them, “The Place I’ll return to someday”:   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1OK29BoxomE   We can’t forget “Rose of May”...   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xKw3eJV6XFM   Along with these classic pieces, Nobuo wrote yet another J-pop single to go with the game. This the greatest cover of “Melodies of Life” ever made:   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wffHREGnTiA   The same year as FF9, the year 2000, would be Nobuo’s first foray into feature films, where he would compose the main theme for the animated film “Ah! My Goddess: The Movie”   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T2VTbUCek8E   The first FInal Fantasy game without a soundtrack composed entirely by Uematsu himself would be the PS2 smash hit…. You guessed it! Final Fantasy X. One would guess that he may have been a bit burned out from FF9. In the end Nobuo ended up composing 51 of the game’s 89 tracks, including the Joe favorite “To Zanarkand”   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z3eQuEm4R10   One of the most commonly performed songs by The Black Mages is the incredibly zany “Fight with Seymour”   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=87e5qQnVerI   Can’t forget a Kaleb favorite, “Auron’s Theme”.   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LaAhtI1_HU8 Oh, and one of the decent theme songs for a Final Fantasy, probably because it wasn’t awkwardly forced into the english language, here’s “Suteki Da Ne”   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ikunVjaG2hw   Final Fantasy XI, despite the arguments between Kaleb and I on whether or not he composed the soundtrack for the game, was composed in large part by him. NOT THE EXPANSIONS, but the original release. Here’s one of his tracks, “Ronfaure”:   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UZ-ZDsFUEP8   Another insanely cool track from FF11 from Uematsu is “Despair”   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=joxCId9SvAU   ...And one of the best-ever FF songs, one that Joe actually likes. This is the epic “Distant Worlds”.   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TzbzAXKCn-Q   Between 2003 and 2004, Uematsu seems to have been put on the backburner a little big, scoring for minor games like Hanjuku Hero Tai 3D and Egg Monster Hero, and only contributing one track for Final Fantasy Tactics Advanced during that time… Here’s the Main Theme:   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KqGNeqc26go   In 2004 Square veteran Hironobu Sakaguchi famously quit Square-Enix to create Mistwalker Studios, and in a way Nobuo left with him. Wanting to work on his live performances, his band the black mages, and seeking other opportunities creatively, Nobuo decided he was going to forge ahead as an independant contracter, and since that departure he’s returned to the FF series 3 times. For the soundtrack of Advent Children he built on his previous themes from FFVII, with FF12 he gave us another pop song I really don’t have the stomach for right now, and with FFXIV… Well, despite creating a lot of tracks for the original release, A Realm Reborn got rid of much of the original music from FF14. His biggest recent contribution to the FF series is probably the song “Answers” from the tragic end of the original game.   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VMhcyzQ7mKw   Nobuo Uematsu has gone on primarily to work with his old friend “The Gooch” on the games Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey, and The Last Story. All of which feature great soundtracks.  Here’s one from Blue Dragon, titled Waterside   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kAzwlwkcFaU   And here’s another from his non-Square Work. Here’s the terrifying Howl of the Departed from Lost Odyssey: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kmCp20CW-Pw   Nobuo Uematsu's touch can be felt upon the whole series. Without him FInal Fantasy wouldn't be the same, and would be worse off for it. Nobuo Currently works hard at his live performances and various little composing projects for games and movies that he decides to work on. He’s doing so much, we can’t even cover it in a two-parter, but it seems he won’t be doing a full FF soundtrack anytime soon We are grateful to him and his work. What say we close with a gorgeous piece from “The Last Story” and close the book on our Spotlight of Nobuo Uematsu? This is “Lost Time”:   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=agAlOe0PoxY

Final Fantasy VIII   Final Fantasy VIII was released for the PlayStation in 1999; February 11th in Japan, September 9th for North America, and October 27th for Europe. The game arrived on PC for Windows in 2000. It has also been available in the PlayStation Network since 2009. The game was developed and published by Square. Final Fantasy VIII’s development began in 1997, while Square was working on the English localization of Final Fantasy VII. The beloved and treasured Hironobu “The Gutch” Sakaguchi served as the games executive producer, while primarily working on his own demise; which takes the form of 2001’s Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within. This lent the position of director for the game to Yoshinori Kitase. The battle system for Final Fantasy VIII was designed by Kitase and none other than Hiroyuki Ito. For the visual design, Kitase knew he wanted a combination of fantasy and realism. He aimed to create a cast of characters who appeared to be ordinary people. Tetsuya Nomura and art director Yusuke Naora worked tirelessly to achieve this feel by creating realistically proportioned characters. Naora also attempted to enhance realism by bright lighting effects while creating appropriate shadows. They also used motion capture technology to give the games characters more lifelike movements in the FMV sequences. The designers felt compelled to invert the atmosphere of the previous games, which were themed as light emerging from darkness. This decision was easy for the team, since they almost all worked on Final Fantasy VII, and felt a new direction was a good idea. The world designs were improved from the last title, due to the experience the team had working within their graphical boundaries. Another part of the “realism” theme that Kitase so desired, was noted with the realistically inspired architecture for the areas. This is noted with the Ancient Egyptian and Greek architecture. We also see a nod to Paris, while throwing a super high tech city in the mix to give it a different, futuristic feeling as well. In an attempt to maintain a foreign atmosphere, the characters designs were predominantly European in appearance. The first Final Fantasy VIII character to be developed was Squall. Nomura gave squall a fur jacket as a challenge to the games FMV designers. Thankfully, they accepted the challenge, and the jacket looks super realistic. Even if it seems slightly out of place… Nomura also found a place for some previously designed characters, such as Edea, Fujin, and Raijin. Nomura designed Edea based on the style of Yoshitaka Amano. Final Fantasy VIII also featured the series’ first lyrics based song. This took the form of Eyes on Me, by Faye Wong.   The game received positive reviews, and was also commercially successful. In just two days after the North American release, Final Fantasy VIII became the top selling video game in the US, and would remain in that spot for over two weeks. As of March 31, 2003 the game had shipped 8.15 million copies worldwide. This was the fastest selling Final Fantasy title at the time. Juliane Jones, a singer-songwriter who just received a Ph.D. in ethnomusicology, is our guest on Program #38 of the Middle Chamber Books and Music Podcast. Juliane talks about her specialization in Chinese operatic music, and how she has integrated Chinese lyrics into songs on her new CD, "The Space Between the Telephone Lines." We also hear several tracks from the CD. About Juliane Jones, from her website: [caption id="attachment_10061" align="alignleft" width="300"] Juliane Jones is a Ph.D. ethnomusicologist and a singer/songwriter whose new CD, "The Space Between the Telephone Lines," was just released.[/caption] Singer-songwriter and ethnomusicologist Juliane Jones finds harmony in what seems like self-identity dissonance. “I occupy a middle space – my world is about intersections,” the New York-based songstress explains. Juliane's father is Welsh, and her mother is from LA. She has lived internationally in five different places and speaks fluent Chinese and French. She is an ethnomusicologist by profession and an actively gigging musician. Evocatively, Juliane titles her kaleidoscopic, singer-songwriter, English-Chinese hybrid album The Space Between The Telephone Lines. Juliane's expansive artistry melds genres and inward/outward travelogues. It's an exquisitely curated showing of diverse identities, spanning the genres of indie, alternative, folk, pop, electronic music, and rock, as it incorporates her experiences from studying music in China and France. Her writing evokes the astute and playful lyrics of Serge Gainsbourg, and the vivid narratives in the French Chanson genre with elements of Canto-pop music, inspired particularly by the Chinese artist Faye Wong. Juliane has been building her artist profile through gigging in NYC's vibrant singer-songwriter scene and expanding her outreach through gigs nationally and internationally, most notably with intimate gigs in Shanghai. In addition, she's received exposure through having tracks played on Fairchild Radio and TV broadcast in Canada. A foundational moment in her life's work timeline occurred while in college in the East Asian Studies Department at the University of Chicago. She was studying the great Italian composer Giacomo Puccini and became inspired by the fact that he integrated Eastern music within one of his operas. It was a revelatory moment: Previously she was a prodigiously talented singer-songwriter with a separate intuitive gift for linguistics and understanding different cultures. This light bulb moment helped her discover the harmony in the space between these worlds. “Ethnomusicology and songwriting are similar in a lot of ways. Ethnography is really about description, observation, and interpretation. Songwriting is similar, but in writing songs the author can blend fact with fiction—it's more flexible,” she says. The Space Between The Telephone Lines uses pop conventions to explore intriguing, contrasting dialogues in music styles, cultures, and love. “The progress and innovations in pop have made it the perfect medium to explore different cultures and genres to create a fresh artistic vocabulary,” Juliane reveals. The album standout, “When You Sleep,” blends elegantly essential classical motifs with sweet folk pop. The accompanying video presents a charmingly quaint snapshot of new love. “That's about when you get to that point in a relationship when you are so crazy-mad-in-love that you start second-guessing what you have,” Juliane says. The sublime, pastoral pop of “Rhythm & Blues” dissects long distance relationships in a playfully conceptual video and lyric scheme, referencing the Chinese myth of the red string of fate that connects destined lovers. Throughout the album Juliane innovatively explores an East-West cultural exchange. She sings portions of songs in Chinese, boldly challenging herself to keep thematic and melodic continuity within Western pop conventions. Further enriching the East-West artistic dialogue, Juliane covers a song by beloved Canto-pop artist Faye Wong who previously ignited her own cultural exchange with a gorgeous version of the Cranberries “Dreams.” The album was tracked in Nashville and produced by Juliane and Doug Beiden. Reflecting on the profound journey to arrive at The Space Between The Telephone Lines, Juliane says: “For me, answering big questions about music, culture, and life has always been a part of my songwriting. I'm always looking for new ways of understanding music, and I've always been interested in how writing music can be linked to individual biography and social history. I'm forever fascinated with that moment of creation, it always seems magical.” Subscribe in a reader Subscribe to the RSS feed for Middle Chamber Books and Music Podcasts.
