Last week, I gave myself permission to do something that was a: pretty far outside of my comfort zone and b: completely unnecessary. If you read or listened to my last Iteration, you know I've been wanting an Elektron Digitakt for years, but would never allow myself to get one. Well, they say that fortune favors the bold, so I finally took the plunge and bought one. I had been lurking in the classified listings on Reverb for months, favoriting “mint” condition Digitakts, only to watch them sell to everyone but me. A couple weeks ago, a new listing popped up that caught my eye because the device appeared to be brand new. I reached out to the retailer — a music store in Tulsa — and asked about it. The owner got back to me the next day and said that it had never been taken out of the box, so I clicked the “Buy Now” button and eagerly awaited its arrival.WATCH THE VIDEOLINKSElektron ReverbCONNECT WITH MEWebsite: https://jefferysaddoris.com Instagram: @jefferysaddorisEmail: talkback@jefferysaddoris.comSUBSCRIBESubscribe to Almost Everything with Jeffery Saddoris in your favorite podcast app. You can also subscribe to my newsletter on Substack.
This past February, Tesfa Williams released his debut album—over 20 years into his career. Raves Of Future Past distilled decades of experience on London dance floors into a potent and powerful blend of grime, house, rave and techno. Made with an Elektron Digitakt to imitate the rough textures of early '00s UK dance music, the LP is an anachronistic history lesson that throws everything in a blender, imagining what gqom might sound like as an Eski track and giving new life to the short-lived "sublow" sound Williams helped invent with classic tracks like "Invasion," released under his earlier alias DJ Dread D. Since the sublow days, however, Williams has become a torchbearer for UK house music and African diasporic sounds like Afro house and gqom in London. He's put out soulful hits like "Heartbeat"—recently reissued by Local Action—and released a steady stream of dance records for PMR and Strictly Rhythm. He's what you might call a jack of all trades, except for that he's actually a master of them all. His RA Podcast charts his musical journey in reverse chronological order, starting with smooth, African-influenced sounds and winding through grime and dubstep, eventually landing at jungle. He threads a needle through diverse genres (and eras), and posits that the traditional UK hardcore continuum is a bigger spectrum than you might think, with gqom's heave and amapiano's log drum equally important in the musical equation. It's nearly two hours of UK dance music past and present, from a DJ who has lived it all. @twilliamsmusic Read more at https://ra.co/podcast/935

"The track "Astr" was made entirely from the sample sound, (a recording of a train station in Egypt, with trains, trainhorn, people talking and hammering or perhaps chiselling), using only the Elektron Digitakt sampler. Using a combination of sampling techniques the sound was sculpted into this little concrete banger at 139.2 BPM." Train journey in Aswan reimagined by Yoni Den.

Plus new firmware update for Elektron Digitakt
Composition by Yoni Den. " All sounds were made from the sample using the Elektron Digitakt. The original sound was a percusive click and wind of an old camera. Three distinct samples were taken from the original sound, each very short. The clicks made good drums and percusion instruments, when pitched around a bit. By then microsampling them and looping made wave table synths out of the same. There are no outside sounds or samples used at any point in the composition. Track composition was done in the Digitakt, then recorded out onto a Zoom H6 at 96kHz." Composition by Dave Paton. "I processed the sample with an Elektron Digitakt. I used it on two channels and manipulated in real time, recording in one take. I then overdubbed some chords played from an Audiothingies Micromonsta. As a child I always enjoyed playing with Viewmasters. In the 70's and early 80's there wasn't a lot of technology around so something like a Viewmaster was intriguing. In particular I remember one of the carts had photos from the film 'One of our dinosaurs is missing' and the pictures were so vivid, I would look at them time and time again, tho I've never seen the actual film. The overdubbed chords are meant to represent some sort of melancholy and sentimentality. The overall sub and rumble of the track is something I hear constantly in my head." Episode 62 of The Ambient Vault podcast features special guest Jay Cliffen. Jay Cliffen is a Canadian instrumental music producer. He specializes in textural cassette-based ambient music. Inspired by minimalist art and design, with influences from jazz, classical, and pop styles, Jay began producing instrumental and increasingly experimental compositions. He developed a sound that blends the harmonic richness of analog synthesizers with acoustic instruments, fused together by magnetic tape, with all of its imperfections. From tape warble, pitch motion, hissing and crackling, emerges mood and emotions that are best described as modern nostalgia.Jay's Ambient Vault session features a collection of unreleased music, designed for meditative moments of quiet reflection. The EP uses sounds from the Lyra-8 synthesizer, Elektron Digitakt for sequencing and re-sampling, as well as micro loop, and tape looping techniques. Mastered at 12K Mastering by Taylor Deupree. Many thanks to Jay for being on the podcast and as always thanks for listening! (Ghost Dog) About HUBA Artist biography: HUBA (Hubert Flow) – DJ/Producer/Writer based in London UK. Born and raised in Wroclaw, Poland. His musical journey begins in late 90s. His fascination with old-school Hip-Hop results in many underground albums recorded and dozens of concerts performed Europewide. After years of experimentation his music converged in micro-minimalistic side of house where HUBA finds peace to this day. His music has been recognised by some of the top DJs like Marco Carola or Richie Hawtin to name the few. Every project he approaches, every track he finishes, every sound he creates has a deeper meaning and is part of a greater agenda. Hubert likes to say: “Music itself is boring. The real trick to music production is to tell a story”. For many years HUBA could be found in East London playing at busy warehouse parties like Stump, The Sunday Afters, Point and many more. Recently he has been fully focused on a brand-new Live Act project. Without the use of any computer software his music matured and became a true representation of his inspirations. Take a dive in to learn about HUBA's perspective on Nature of Reality, Time, Matter and Consciousness.
