Christian is joined once more by Joshua Noel to discuss Leviticus 23 and 24. Why does God mandate festivals and holidays? What are the purposes of these days and what can we learn from them now? Why is the Sabbath so important? Why would God ordain holidays that weren't to be celebrated before the conquering of the Promised Land? What does it mean to blaspheme God's Name? Does the ethnicity of the perpetrator matter in this instance? Was Moses righteous to have the man stoned? https://zencastr.com/?via=christian-ashley Mentioned in this episode:Zencastr ad. General Theme for the Week: Holiness Each Day Today's Lesson: Does Sunday Interrupt Your Schedule? On this edition of One Single Story, Pastors Stephen Mizell and Chris Rexroad discuss the following questions: Our fast paced society has caused us to cater to our communities through a variety of service times, activities, and seasonal themes. Have we made worshiping God collectively too convenient? We tend to view interruptions as negative, yet church attendance requires an interruption of our weekly schedule. Do you think the average church member views this interruption as negative or positive? Attending church regularly is both a discipline and a joy. How do we balance those two concepts? The reading for the day is Leviticus 23.

Preacher: Joel Fair Leviticus 23:4-8 Four Truths to take away from the Feast of Unleavened Bread 1. Remember what you have been saved from - death and slavery 2. Remember who you have been saved to - God himself 3. Trust in the strong hand of the Lord - your Savior & Provider 4. Your faith-filled obedience to God's Word is an act of worship - a pleasing aroma to God Leviticus 23:4-8 - Feast of Unleavened Bread Michael Thigpen The feast was to be a memorial of the Hebrews' hasty departure, their waiting for and reception of salvation from Egyptian slavery after the final plague. Numbers 28:23–24 23 You shall offer these besides the burnt offering of the morning, which is for a regular burnt offering. 24 In the same way you shall offer daily, for seven days, the food of a food offering, with a pleasing aroma to the LORD. It shall be offered besides the regular burnt offering and its drink offering. Exodus 12:15–20 (ESV) 15 Seven days you shall eat unleavened bread. On the first day you shall remove leaven out of your houses, for if anyone eats what is leavened, from the first day until the seventh day, that person shall be cut off from Israel. 16 On the first day you shall hold a holy assembly, and on the seventh day a holy assembly. No work shall be done on those days. But what everyone needs to eat, that alone may be prepared by you. 17 And you shall observe the Feast of Unleavened Bread, for on this very day I brought your hosts out of the land of Egypt. Therefore you shall observe this day, throughout your generations, as a statute forever. 18 In the first month, from the fourteenth day of the month at evening, you shall eat unleavened bread until the twenty-first day of the month at evening. 19 For seven days no leaven is to be found in your houses. If anyone eats what is leavened, that person will be cut off from the congregation of Israel, whether he is a sojourner or a native of the land. 20 You shall eat nothing leavened; in all your dwelling places you shall eat unleavened bread.” Exodus 13:8 8 You shall tell your son on that day, ‘It is because of what the LORD did for me when I came out of Egypt.' Exodus 13:14 14 And when in time to come your son asks you, ‘What does this mean?' you shall say to him, ‘By a strong hand the LORD brought us out of Egypt, from the house of slavery. Exodus 13:16 16 It shall be as a mark on your hand or frontlets between your eyes, for by a strong hand the LORD brought us out of Egypt.” Deuteronomy 16:3 (ESV) 3 You shall eat no leavened bread with it. Seven days you shall eat it with unleavened bread, the bread of affliction—for you came out of the land of Egypt in haste—that all the days of your life you may remember the day when you came out of the land of Egypt. Michael Thigpen First and foremost, with its link to Passover and the departure from Egypt, unleavened bread reminded the Israelites of the immediacy of their salvation. To participate in God's plan to transform them from Pharaoh's slaves to his own people and nation, the Hebrews were required to launch out that very night, unprepared and totally dependent on God for the journey ahead. Waiting anxiously for the final plague to be over and for their promised protection to be realized, they ate the Passover and then carried out their unleavened dough on their backs (Ex. 12:34). Special Guest: Joel Fair.

THE FEAST Remember the Story Surviving the Passover Keeping the Passover THE MEANING OF THE FEAST Expiation and Propitiation THE GOSPEL AND THE FEAST Exodus 12:13 (ESV) The blood shall be a sign for you, on the houses where you are. And when I see the blood, I will pass over you Romans 3:21–25 (ESV) But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it— the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. Romans 3:21–25 (ESV) For there is no distinction: for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus Romans 3:21–25 (ESV) whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God's righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins. John 19:32–33 (ESV) So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first, and of the other who had been crucified with him. But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. John 1:29: John the Baptist says Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! 1 Corinthians 5:7b For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed. Philip Ryken: For Jesus to be our Passover Lamb, he had to meet God's standard of perfection.

And he went down into Egypt and sojourned there, few in number, and there he became a nation, great, mighty, and populous. And the Egyptians treated us harshly and humiliated us and laid on us hard labor. Then we cried to the LORD, the God of our fathers, and the LORD heard our voice and saw our affliction, our toil, and our oppression. And the LORD brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm, with great deeds of terror, with signs and wonders. And he brought us into this place and gave us this land, a land flowing with milk and honey. And behold, now I bring the first of the fruit of the ground, which you, O LORD, have given me.' And you shall set it down before the LORD your God and worship before the LORD your God. And you shall rejoice in all the good that the LORD your God has given to you and to your house, you, and the Levite, and the sojourner who is among you. _ Numbers 18:11–13 (ESV) This also is yours: the contribution of their gift, all the wave offerings of the people of Israel. I have given them to you, and to your sons and daughters with you, as a perpetual due. Everyone who is clean in your house may eat it. All the best of the oil and all the best of the wine and of the grain, the firstfruits of what they give to the Lord, I give to you. The first ripe fruits of all that is in their land, which they bring to the Lord, shall be yours. Everyone who is clean in your house may eat it. Jeremiah 2:3 (ESV) _Israel was holy to the Lord, the firstfruits of his harvest. _ Psalm 67:1–3 (ESV) May God be gracious to us and bless us and make his face to shine upon us, Selah that your way may be known on earth, your saving power among all nations. Let the peoples praise you, O God; let all the peoples praise you! James 1:18 (ESV) Of his own will he brought us forth by the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures. 1 Corinthians 15:20, 23 (ESV) But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. … But each in his own order: Christ the firstfruits, then at his coming those who belong to Christ. Romans 6:10–11 (ESV) For the death he died he died to sin, once for all, but the life he lives he lives to God. So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus. Romans 8:23 (ESV) And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies. In this episode let's look at a brutal story about a man who cursed the Lord.  Does the punishment fit the crime or seem extreme?  How does this story relate back to Leviticus 10?  Seven feasts ordained by God as a "set time" to meet with Him.  What do you know about those feasts?  We cover a few more things to know here but have several podcasts that go more indepth in episodes #14, 15, 30, 103, 105, and 172.Our website - www.thecontextandcolorofthebible.comWe are on Facebook - The Context and Color of the Bible | FacebookWe are on Instagram - @contextandcolorofthebibleWe are on YouTube - The Context and Color of the Bible - YouTubeWe are on Pinterest - The Context and Color of the BibleErika's  website - www.erikavanhaitsma.comMusic: Tabuk by Kevin MacLeodLink: https://incompetech.filmmusic.io/song/4453-tabukLicense: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/
