A recent article on irunfar.com made quite a splash, when the [white] authors called for feedback on the new 'progressive' initiatives launched by the Pro Trail Runners Association, and BIPOC women answered by calling out the lack of intersectionality and diversity. In this episode, Stef and Carolyn address the harm that was caused while still acknowledging the good intent behind the initiatives, and they discuss the bigger picture of why feminism and inclusivity must be addressed with an openness to accountability. The curator is Jeannie Yandel, co-host of Battle Tactics For Your Sexist WorkplaceWhy did Jeannie choose this theme? "The conversation about Britney Spears and her conservatorship is a conversation about power. You might think that one of the most famous people in the world, with hundreds of millions of record sales to her name, would hold an incredible amount of power. But Britney's case illustrates how stunningly easy it is to rob someone of their power and agency in plain sight — and if it can happen to someone as visible as Britney, it's very clearly happening to people with less visibility and fame."Thank you to this week's EarBuds sponsor, LWC Studios:LWC Studios just launched a new show, How to Talk to High [Achievers] About Anything, and they need you! "I love having folks to be stride in stride with. There's a lot of community in sweating together.” Faith E. Briggs is a runner, storyteller, and documentary filmmaker passionate about sharing contemporary stories from diverse communities. Her work spans many fields, and we talk about some of her amazing documentary films including This Land, which digs into conversations about public lands, what it means to be a conservationist and who is invited to the conversation. As part of making that film, she ran 150 miles across public lands and monuments alongside local community members in order to educate herself on the history and importance of the land. Faith was also a sprinter during her college years at Yale University and we bond here over our shared alma mater and residential college dorm, Ezra Stiles (feat. our favorite mentor/Head of College, Steve Pitti– GFM, Stiles forever). We chat about how she balanced her academic, cultural and social life during those years and spend quite a bit of time discussing her personal running journey.   In this Episode: A Tribe Called Red Yale Afro-American Cultural Center Yale Native American Cultural Center Ezra Stiles Residential College at Yale “Navajo Nation and Urban Outfitters Reach Agreement on Appropriation,” by Alysa Landry, Indian Country Today, November 22, 2016 Wings of America Black Roses NYC (Running Club) “This Land” Documentary Nuestra Tierra   Follow Faith E. This week's episode of the podcast—the last one for 2020—is a “best of” compilation of highlights from 12 of the most impactful conversations I've had over the past 12 months. To provide a little context: I put out 47 episodes of the podcast in 2020—totaling almost 100 hours of conversation—and picking out soundbites from only a dozen of them to highlight here was really freaking hard. I literally have notebooks full of stuff that I've learned from every single guest and I simply cannot express enough gratitude for all that they've shared with me and, in turn, all of you. In this episode you'll hear from six women and six men whose stories, experiences, wisdom, and insight really stood out to me. They are, in order of episode release date: Fernando Cabada, Laura Schmitt, Nate Jenkins, Mike Smith, Mary Cain, Karen Boen, Faith E. Briggs, Mike Rouse, Brenda Martinez, Kilian Jornet, Diljeet Taylor, and Knox Robinson. These weren't necessarily the most downloaded episodes but I promise you each of these guests will move you in some way by either teaching you something new, providing an important insight, or getting you to reflect upon and perhaps even re-examine some aspect of your own life. If you're a devoted fan of the podcast, it's my hope that this second annual “best of” episode serves as a bit of a refresher or maybe a reminder to revisit an old episode or two. For those of you who are newer listeners to the show, welcome. Use this episode as a nudge to check out some of the conversations you may have missed while also letting it serve as a primer for what's to come in 2021. Whether you tune in to every episode of the podcast or only listen every once in a while, I just want to say: thank you. I'm tremendously grateful for your interest and support. I'm a little over three years into this podcast journey and the impact it's had on my life and many of you who listen regularly is immeasurable. I'm so glad to have all of you along for the ride and sharing in these experiences with me. “Who do we get to see? And therefore, who do we get to believe in? Not only to understand people better, but I think to understand for younger kids especially how they get to travel through the world and what their potential could be. It's a lot harder to imagine yourself being something if you've never seen anyone that looks like you doing it. And we internalize these images of who gets to be a surfer and who doesn't, or who gets to be a marathoner and who doesn't, or who gets to be, you know, a politician, and who doesn't. So yeah, that's what I mean when I say representation.” Faith E. Briggs is a runner, documentary filmmaker, and advocate currently based in Portland, Oregon, and her work focuses on diversity and representation in the media and outdoors. Her latest film, This Land, is a story about land access told through a journey of inclusion and empowerment, where she and a few other runners ran 150 miles through three U.S. National Monuments and assess what is at stake if previously protected lands are reduced and if the public is largely unaware about it. I had been looking forward to this conversation for a while and it did not disappoint. We talked about the mix of excitement and trepidation Faith is feeling midway through 2020, working through some of the confusion she's been experiencing, and why representation in the media is more important now than ever before. She also told me about the the appeal of mountains, trails, and ultras to someone who ran the 400m in college, redefining "conservationist," her love of words, language, and storytelling, and a lot more.
