"My big fear with all of this is the trickle down," Dr. Sasha Gollish joins us on the episode, to chat about her work in Gender Equity in sport, her time as a professional runner for team Canada, how she knew she was in perimenopause, and much more. Gollish ran at a younger age, but took some time off and worked as an engineer in Toronto before getting back to the sport at a high level. We talk about what it looked like to go back into competitive running, working with Oiselle and Asics, going to the World Marathon Championships in 2023 for Team Canada, and eventually navigating perimenopause. As a gender equity advocate, Gollish worked to bring awareness to the World Athletics decision to resume "sex testing" for athletes competing in the female category, so we discuss her thoughts and perspective on that, along with concerns about how it may impact athletes down the line.  Follow Dr. Sasha Gollish and Yellow Running Shoes on Instagram: @Sgollishruns. Qualia Senolytic is designed to selectively target and eliminate damaged or dysfunctional cells in the body, which are called senescent cells.  By removing these cells, senolytics aim to rejuvenate tissues, reduce inflammation, and reverse some aspects of aging.  Early research has shown senolytics can…  Lead to a reduction in systemic inflammation Improve vascular function by reducing senescent cell burden in the arteries. MAS Iron Outside of training deficiencies, low iron is one of the most common reasons for poor results during workouts and races.  Recent research indicates that almost 56% of male runners and 86% of female runners suffer from an iron deficiency that severely hampers performance. The problem with eating iron-rich foods or supplementing with traditional iron supplements is that iron is notoriously difficult for the body to absorb and utilize. In fact, only about 25% of dietary iron found in animal sources is absorbed while 17% or less of the iron from plant sources is absorbed. But MAS Iron has found a way to combat these absorption issues to ensure you can get the iron you need for health and performance. By combining the most efficiently absorbed form of elemental iron with clinically proven ingredients to aid in absorption, MAS Iron performs like no other iron product on the market. In fact, clinical research has shown the combination of ingredients in MAS Iron can quadruple absorption and increase bioavailability by 30%, all while reducing GI issues by 50%. Send us a textGood For A Girl by Lauren Fleshman is the story of Lauren's life and experience in professional running. Running seemed straight forward when she was growing up, you work hard and you get the reward, but women don't have the same performance trajectory as men when going through puberty. Women often plateau as they get used to their "new body" after puberty, but this comes at an inconvenient time in college when coaches are picking top performers for scholarships and want their team to win in the NCAA system. Lauren's story is about navigating her time in the NCAA, what she saw during her time competing at the college level and beyond (including competitors who would disappear from the running scene following struggles with eating disorders) and why it's important to change things for future girls and women.Who is Lauren Fleshman? In case you haven't heard of her, Lauren is an award winning author and one of the most decorated American distance runners of all time, having won five NCAA championships at Stanford and two national championships as a professional. Her writing has appeared in The New York Times, Time and Runner's World. Her debut book was an instant New York Times Bestseller, and won the prestigious William Hill Sports Book of the Year Award. She is the brand strategy advisor for Oiselle, a fitness apparel company for women, and the co-founder of Picky Bars, a natural food company. Madie Boreman is a professional steeplechaser for Oiselle, and last year, 2023, in her very first season as a pro, she established herself as a racer to watch. Getting to this point, however, has been full of many ups and downs. In this episode Boreman shares the story of her journey transitioning from collegiate racing to the professional ranks. Boreman has had a talent and love of running and racing since childhood. She was a standout collegiate runner for the powerhouse team at CU Boulder her freshman year, but injuries plagued her thereafter. Despite that, Boreman continued to perform well, and more importantly, she knew she had more to give. She could feel it. So despite a vote of no confidence from CU Boulder coaches about her prospects as a pro after graduation, Boreman followed her intuition and went for it. Boreman bet on herself that she could indeed race with the best in the professional ranks. She built a strong and supportive network around herself, notably with agent Isaya Okwiya and coach Julie Benson, and she has began to put in the performances she knew she was capable of. Boreman also has a well developed ability to turn disappointment into a future asset, so while success does fuel her confidence, disappointment fuels her determination. Step by step, Madie Boreman is developing into a top steeplechaser in the US and her momentum is building to the biggest day on the 2024 race calendar: the US Olympic Trials happening June 21-30. This is the story of a young champion on the rise. Carmen Graves is a professional track racer sponsored by Oiselle, and she specializes in the uniquely challenging event of the steeplechase. Graves's unexpected discovery of excelling at this event and the exciting reality that she continues to improve as a steeplechaser at the age of 33 is what this story is all about. Graves loves to run and race, and she is exceptional, but her journey has been punctuated with moments of frustration and questioning. She's experienced crippling race anxiety and, often as the only Black woman on the starting line, feelings of not belonging. Graves also recognizes the impact of racism in the sport of track and field: how Black women and women of color are steered toward sprint events, while white woman are more likely to be introduced to distance events. Alongside facing these hurdles, Graves has experienced terrific self-discovery and triumph. She's towing the line these days with ever stronger confidence and ability, and she's feeling all the more empowered about the importance of representation. Graves has also gone through some big changes recently that are resulting in some new PRs and boosted confidence coming into the 2024 Olympic Trials. This will be Graves third appearance at the Olympic Trials, and she's coming in more ready than ever to go after a spot on Team USA. In this episode, Graves covers her fascinating steeplechase journey, and to kick things off, she gives a detailed description of the event itself. If you are unfamiliar with the steeplechase, or even if you are, this is a wonderful opportunity to sit with how truly difficult and, quite frankly, scary this event is, from a woman who is one of the best. In addition to training and racing, Graves is the co-founder with her husband, Sean Stetler, of Denver Athletics, an all-inclusive community running club that welcomes athletes of all ages and abilities. The organization also hosts all-comers track meets, and in 2023, they hosted seven events. Graves also works full time as a program advisor for the Center of Work Education and Employment. Yes, it's been a long fortnight since the last Nobody Asked Us episode, but Taylor needed the space and so did we.  This episode starts innocently enough with an off-the-rails intro and then Des and Kara reveal the clandestine use of four contest words in past episodes. Kara illicitly tried to throw you off on the last one, but one lucky winner still figured it out. Thus, this episode brings two new words if you are ready to play their little game.  Before they dig into Boston and wish London "farewell," they give their freshy fresh thoughts on THE new double album, including the torturous decision of choosing a podium from the 31 songs. In the running world, we must ask ourselves was (the Trials in) Florida the drug or was it Boston after all? Plus, Des and Kara answer... "How could Helen Obiri occupy such rare air?" and "Why didn't Sisay Lemma self-implode after taking it out so early?" and "What are the implications for the Kenya marathon team and who will be the odd man out?" The two then w̶a̶d̶e̶ cannonball into the great uniform debate with answers that might surprise you. And don't you worry folks, no one is taking out Des's teeth. This one wraps with another "Underbird" segment presented by Oiselle, and of course, an Olipop Top 5 talking about books, bourbon, and boys. You asked for it, and you are getting it! Des and Kara recorded this freshy fresh Boston Marathon recap at 10:15 pm on Marathon Monday after just enough beers. The most important detail, perhaps, is that they shut down the bar at the end of this one. They were literally kicked out of the Sam Adams Taproom in downtown Boston to end the show, the perfect mic drop after an epic weekend of racing for the two of them. You will hear the full back story on Kara's successful mission to #destoryColt, including the complete shock to her system to navigate the challenges of the mass start. Bib pickup… “how does that work?” Gear check… “wait, what?” Lining up 20+ minutes early to be positioned well for the start… “this is crazy.” Despite these new hurdles, she “destroyed” Colt's PR by 7 seconds to finish in 18:50 and declare open season on the new hashtag #destroyKara as Colt now seeks his revenge. Then, of course, you hear highlights from Des's 11th Boston. Des talks about the difficulty of being marathon-sharp after a full weekend of events, shares her pre-race meal and pre-race vibes, and details the key moments in the race, including the words exchanged with Emma Bates when she caught the lead pack again at mile 15. Along the way, Kara gives her thoughts and emotions as the ultimate Des fangirl watching from the finish line on Boylston for the first time. Finally, they finish with the “Underbird” underdog of the week segment (sponsored by Oiselle), discussing an unlikely athlete who again made huge waves at the front of the race at the age of 44. "This race is too hard for women. They are simply not tough enough to do it, and I get to say that for as long as it takes until someone proves me wrong." - Lazarus Lake, Race Director for the Barkley Marathons. Enter Jasmin Paris. Sorry Lazarus. But first, Des and Kara kick things off with their usual banter talking about solving the world's problems on a run, and perhaps relatedly or unrelatedly, Des's final prep for Boston, including her typical taper routine. Is Des a barely-taper or extreme-taper type of athlete, and has she ever gotten lost on a Boston Marathon course preview run? They also discuss their routines for picking running routes. Which of Des or Kara is the psycho who runs the same route every day?!? A serial killer trait to be sure... Then digging into recent events, you get their hottest takes on the results from World XC, the Barkley Marathons, and the NCAA Women's Basketball tournament, where the women are setting viewing records left and right. As a bonus, you learn the backstory of how Kara just missed her chance to be a late '90s version of Caitlin Clark. So, so close. This week we are joined by the incredible Lauren Fleshman, New York Times bestselling author of "Good for a Girl", to discuss the systemic ways that our sports culture fails women and girls, and how we can create a better future for the next generation of female athletes.  We dive into how the natural and expected changes in a young women's body during adolescence are met with misunderstanding and pathology, and how the sports systems that girls and women find themselves in are built by men, for men and boys. They don't currently account for or support the experience of the female athlete. Even if you aren't a female-bodied human or an athlete, I hope you'll tune into this episode. This is such an important conversation about challenging the patriarchy and policing of women's bodies, far beyond athletics and running. As always, please listen with compassion and empathy for yourself and any past (or current) experiences this may bring up for you. Tune in to hear more about… The inspiration behind Lauren's book, Good for a Girl How prevalent disordered eating is when girls in adolescence, even into their college years The objectification of female bodies during adolescence How the US sports systems are built for around a default male body The significant differences between young girls and boys when training for sports The lack of normalization and support that girls and young women receive in sports during adolescence What happens when girls fight against natural body changes The rate that young girls drop out of sports What is viewed as "essential equipment" for boys in sports versus girls The financial pressure of athlete scholarships and ensuring performance at the expense of health If weight loss and losing a menstrual cycle is "normal" during sports training The extended time period to truly recover from undereating and overtraining in a women's body Redefining excellence for women in sports beyond race times and body-focused numbers How high risk women athletes are funneled into college sports Performative health and how food choices are policed in athlete spaces What's next for Lauren in her career  About Lauren: Lauren Fleshman is an award winning author and one of the most decorated American distance runners of all time, having won five NCAA championships at Stanford and two national championships as a professional. Her writing has appeared in The New York Times, Time and Runner's World. Her debut book was an instant New York Times Bestseller, and won the prestigious William Hill Sports Book of the Year Award. Professional middle distance track racer Rebecca Mehra shares her professional running story. It's been marked by great success, two years of disappointing hurdles, to now: coming into 2024 healthy and ready, with a new perspective, new coach, and new set of training partners. Rebecca Mehra is a professional middle distance track racer, sponsored by Oiselle. She specializes in the 800 and 1500 meter. For her collegiate career, Mehra raced for the legendary running powerhouse Stanford. A year after graduation, in 2018, she became a member of Oiselle's Littlewing Athletics Elite Team, coached by former professional runner, now award-winning author Lauren Fleshman. As a new pro, Mehra's star was on the rise. She was setting PRs, going head to head in top competitions, and winning races. She was racing at top invitational meets throughout the US, and in Europe. Until 2021. Over the past few years, Mehra has experienced a series of frustrating events. Sickness and injury have set her racing plans back, time after time. There was more than one occasion when Mehra considered her career as a professional racer over. Coming into 2024, however, things began to shift. Mehra has been healthy, and she's found a new team to train with and she has a new coach. She's also bringing her years of experience and wisdom, and a refreshed commitment to her professional racing career. It's an Olympic year, and Mehra is ready to get in the mix. Ken came to running to overcome his drug addiction and cope with difficult feelings, and his path to elite running is nothing short of remarkable!  In this episode we talk about: -how running helped Ken get sober  -handling negativity with self-belief and resiliency -leveraging publicity and your platform for good  -defining success by effort over outcome  -understanding failure  -building community with how you show up  Follow Ken on Instagram @ken_rideout and For The Long Run @forthelrpod  --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/forthelongrun/support  Past guests on For The Long Run include: 177. Briana Boehmer: A Difficult Decision and the Power of Support

Strides Forward

Briana Boehmer had dreamed about qualifying for an Olympic trials since she was young. But she'd let go of that dream as she moved into her 40s. In her mind, she had aged out. That all changed in 2020. Boehmer's first competitive sport was running, which she did through college. After college, she became a competitive triathlete, eventually working up to racing the Ironman distance, which involves swimming 2.4 miles, cycling 112 miles, and then running the distance of a marathon, 26.2 miles. With the onset of COVID in 2020, however, Boehmer returned to running only and decided to run a marathon. This was an event she'd never done on its own, without having swum and cycled for hours before. In her first marathon, the 2021 California International Marathon or CIM, which took place in December 5, Boehmer shocked herself by running 2:33. With that time, she set the Masters 40+ course record and earned 7th place in the open women's field. Additionally, those scuttled Olympic trials dreams were suddenly back up for grabs: the Olympic trials qualifying (OTQ) time for the 2024 trials was 2:37. But there was one big hiccough: the window to qualify for the 2024 Olympic Marathon Trials didn't open until January 1, 2022. After that debut marathon, Boehmer was plagued by a series of injuries that kept her from getting that OTQ. Her final opportunity was CIM 2023, on December 3, and she was eager to race in the kit of her new sponsor Oiselle, as part of the company's innovative Underbirds program. Unfortunately, an injury flare up just one week out from CIM ultimately led to Boehmer making the incredibly tough but necessary decision to not start CIM. This is the story of what it looks like to face the fears and disappointment of making the difficult choice not to race, when there are big dreams at stake. This is also what it looks like to remove limiting beliefs and experience the power of unwavering support. To borrow Boehmer's words: "I've already won." Nike: B2B Marketing Lessons from Lauren Fleshman's Visionary “Objectify Me” Campaign with Kaite Rosa, Senior Director of Brand at Axonius

Remarkable Marketing

We're willing to bet that you're working on a new B2B campaign and require some new inspiration.Because all B2B tech ads look and sound the same. They just melt into one shapeless, forgettable jumble of fingers typing and screens scrolling. But we see you plodding along in the B2B marketing marathon of sameness, and we're throwing you some jet-boosted sneakers. On this episode of Remarkable, we're daring you to do the exact opposite of your competitors, to outsource the authenticity of your brand voice to your customers, and much, much more. And we're doing that with the help of our special guest, Senior Director of Brand at Axonius, Kaite Rosa. Together, we're exploring the iconic and visionary 2007 Nike ad campaign featuring pro runner Lauren Fleshman. We look at how the ad deviated from the “tasteful nude” status quo of female athletes in ads, dismantled the objectification of women in sports, and promoted inclusivity by leveraging Lauren's voice. And how you too can subvert expectations, make a statement, and do it authentically. So lace up your new sneaks and get ready to redefine B2B ads on the latest episode of Remarkable.About Nike's “Objectify Me” CampaignNike's “Objectify Me” campaign was a 2007 ad featuring pro runner Lauren Fleshman. It's a 30-second black and white slow mo video of Lauren running toward the camera. And we hear Lauren's voice. She says, “Look at me, study me, understand me. I'm not a small, pink version of a man. Don't give me small, pink versions of a man's running shoe. I'm Lauren Fleshman. I'm a runner, and I'm a woman.” Then it shows her running out of frame, and the Nike logo pops up on screen. It's a really understated Nike ad that deviated FAR from its predecessors.Lauren is a decorated distance runner. She won five NCAA championships at Stanford and two national championships as a professional athlete. She's also a writer, having been featured in The New York Times and Runner's World. Lauren is now Brand Strategy Advisor for fitness apparel company Oiselle, and Co-Founder of natural food company Picky Bars. Her book Good For a Girl: A Woman Running in a Man's World came out in January 2023.About our guest, Kaite RosaKaite Rosa is Senior Director of Brand at Axonius, where she leads the team responsible for creating a $2.6 billion brand in less than five years. Cited as one of the fastest-growing cybersecurity brands in history, Axonius has been named one of the most valuable private cloud companies in the world by the Forbes Cloud 100, along with numerous industry accolades.A life-long writer, she is passionate about using storytelling and creative concepts to define and build exceptional brand experiences. She has spent the bulk of her career at tech startups, and thrives on rapidly growing, fast-paced teams. Previously, she led brand and content at Payfactors, Virgin Pulse, and VentureFizz. What B2B Companies Can Learn From Nike's “Objectify Me” Campaign: Do the opposite of what's expected. Look at what other companies in your space are doing in their campaigns and make a campaign based on the antithesis of that. Be the rebel in your industry. Subvert the expected. Kaite says so many brands feel like they have to join in on what's popular or trending. She says, “There's a lot of, like, ‘Me too,' right? Like, they're gonna copy it and try to make it their own, and look very similar. But what inspires me the most is looking at what your competitors are doing and doing the exact opposite.” It's like how Lauren Fleshman was presented with a briefing inspired by Brandi Chastain's “tasteful nude” ad, and advocated instead to be in her athletic gear and to write the ad copy herself. She turned the copy on its head, saying that if she was going to be objectified, it would be to design running gear specific to her physiology. And the campaign became iconic.Outsource authenticity to your customers. Make your customer's voice your brand voice. Ian says marketers always want to control the narrative, but sometimes you need to let your customers take the wheel. Because he says that when you ask customers to talk about your brand in their own words, “They come up with something absolutely brilliant that you could never have written.” And how could that not be authentic? Nike was able to outsource the authenticity piece of Lauren's ad because Lauren wrote the copy herself. For sure, there was a layer of brand approval, but the words are Lauren's. So outsource the authenticity piece of your ad copy to customers, and it will resonate.Quotes*”Whether you're working in a bootstrapped company or publicly funded company. any budget can accommodate your customer voice.” - Kaite Rosa*”If you're doing a high-level brand campaign, the approach shouldn't be, ‘Let's sell you all the features and benefits.' It should be, ‘Let's get you in the store. Let's get you remembering who we are so that the next time you need those new sneakers or you need a B2B SaaS solution,  you remember the ad.'” - Kaite Rosa*”What is memorable and where storytelling really comes alive is when you look at what's out there and say, ‘We're gonna do something that is disruptive, that is different. And I think that you can do that on any budget.” - Kaite Rosa*“People latch on to the authenticity of brands. That's what drives you emotionally to a brand, is that it feels authentic. It resonates with you. And I think living and breathing your values in everything you do, if you're at a company with a culture that encourages that, that ties your values into everything you do, it comes naturally. As a child of the 80s and 90s, Lauren Fleshmen was one of the first generation of women athletes to benefit from a piece of legislation called Title IV.  Signed into law in 1972, Title IV expanded on the 14th Amendment, or the Civil Rights Act. It declared that no one could be discriminated against for participating in activities that received federal funds based on their sex. While the promise of equality in sports is codified into law, the reality of high-level sports for female athletes is rarely equal, even 50 years later. And Lauren Fleshman is here to tell us why. In this episode, you'll learn: Lauren's incredibly vulnerable true story with all the highs and lows How Lauren stood up to Nike well before she was famous, and She'll share her best advice for those still competing today Lauren is one of the most decorated American distance runners of all time, having won five NCAA championships at Stanford and two national championships as a professional. Her writing has appeared in The New York Times and Runner's World. She is the brand strategy advisor for Oiselle, a fitness apparel company for women, and the co-founder of Picky Bars, a natural food company.  In her new book, Good for a Girl, Lauren shares an intimate look at what it took to become a champion in an industry designed and funded by men and how she nearly destroyed her own body and career.  It is so gripping that it reads like fiction. Lauren Fleshman is one of the most decorated American distance runners of all time, having won five NCAA championships at Stanford and two national championships as a professional. Her writing has appeared in The New York Times and Runner's World. She is the brand strategy advisor for Oiselle, a fitness apparel company for women, and the co-founder of Picky Bars, a natural food company. She is the author of the NY Times Bestseller Good for a Girl, an extraordinary look at female athletes and the struggles they face in a male dominated world.  As the book description says, “Fleshman's story of falling in love with running as a girl, being pushed to her limits and succumbing to devastating injuries, and daring to fight for a better way for female athletes. Long gone are the days when women and girls felt lucky just to participate; Fleshman and women everywhere are waking up to the reality that they're running, playing, and competing in a world that wasn't made for them. Drawing on not only her own story but also emerging research on the physiology and psychology of young athletes, of any gender, Fleshman gives voice to the often-silent experience of the female athlete and argues that the time has come to rebuild our systems of competitive sport with women at their center. Written with heart and verve, Good for a Girl is a joyful love letter to the running life, a raw personal narrative of growth and change, and a vital call to reimagine sports for young women.” This is an extraordinary conversation about women in sport, raising and coaching female athletes, and finding your voice and your soul in a world that devalues the humanity of so many. Matt Welcomes former professional runner, running coach, and author Lauren Fleshman to the show to celebrate the release of her autobiographical memoir, Good for a Girl: A Woman Running in a Man's World. Lauren details her new book which uses her personal experience and the challenges she faced as a collegiate and professional athlete in a male-centric environment, as a catalyst to bring about significant change in women's athletics. Matt and Lauren discuss women's sports in a male arena and how to reframe the female experience in a way that is grounded in knowledge of the female body. They cover the taboo of female physiology embedded in the culture of the sport. Lauren dissects the toxic talk that hinders natural performance development, can lead to body dysmorphia, and can encourage disordered eating habits in athletes. Matt and Lauren offer applicable tools for developing a foundation of support for female athletes as coaches, teammates, and loved ones, to help foster positive and healthy growth, improved performance, and longevity. Whether you are a coach, a parent, a supporter, or an athlete yourself, this episode provides insight into the diversity of voices and experiences at every level of sport. It inspires a call to action to create an environment that accommodates every type of athlete and helps nurture a deep love for sport.
