Cornelius Vanderbilt was a force in 19th century America, playing a pivotal role in transitioning the U.S. economy from rural mercantilism to industrial corporate capitalism. Vanderbilt didn't just compete—he dominated; and didn't just dominate one industry—he conquered three: ferries, steamships, and railroads. He understood that power lay in controlling infrastructure and not just operating within it. His cutthroat tactics were both feared and admired but his vision for what the economy could be was undeniable. This is the story of how Vanderbilt turned calculated aggression into an art form, how he endured more pain than his competitors, and how he built systems that outlived him. Learn the mindset, strategies, and brutal lessons behind his dominance; the game of business hasn't changed as much as you think. Get Michelle's book here: https://a.co/d/9qreqPr One Idea To Rule Them All: Reverse Engineering American Propaganda" delves into the fascinating world of cognitive shortcuts that our brains employ to form beliefs, and how these can be manipulated in a technologically advanced society to subtly influence our perceptions. Rather than viewing propaganda as mere lies or distortions, the book explores the sophisticated techniques developed since the early 20th century that render such a simplistic view obsolete. It exposes the power wielded by 'Idea Bullies' who, armed with these techniques, vast wealth, and influential connections, dominate the marketplace of ideas, leading to a democracy ossified in orthodoxy. The book traces the historical evolution of this phenomenon, known variously as the manufacturing of consent, public relations, or simply 'propaganda'. It also illuminates how the art of stagecraft and narrative storytelling have supplanted the objective pursuit of truth, and why this manipulation of language is invariably the first harbinger of tyranny. In this episode of Purple Political Breakdown, we explore Michelle Stiles' new book, One Idea To Rule Them All: Reverse Engineering American Propaganda. Stiles, a teacher and author known for simplifying complex ideas, reveals the subtle yet powerful techniques of "idea bullying" that shape our beliefs and decisions. The book examines how cognitive shortcuts—our brain's natural way of forming beliefs—are exploited in modern society to subtly manipulate perceptions. Rather than reducing propaganda to mere lies, Stiles highlights the sophisticated methods developed since the early 20th century that dominate the marketplace of ideas. She exposes how wealthy and well-connected "Idea Bullies" use these tactics to create an orthodoxy that stifles genuine democracy. Through a historical lens, Stiles traces the evolution of propaganda—also known as public relations or the manufacturing of consent—showing how language manipulation and narrative control often signal the rise of tyranny. Join us as we unpack the book's eye-opening insights into modern propaganda and its impact on our society.https://www.amazon.com/One-Idea-Rule-Them-All/dp/B0BNQMH9J8/ https://smartsheepe.com/

Tread Perilously's Movies on TV month concludes with an episode of Teen Wolf called "Lunatic." Following the incident at school, Scott and Allison are on the outs ... and it seems to be having a profound effect on his wolfy nature. Allison, meanwhile, is starting to notice how strange people are behaving -- particularly her father and aunt. Derek is on the run as he is the prime suspect in the school incident and Scott can't decide if he or the Alpha is making him go feral. Jackson sees an opportunity to get closer to Allison and Stiles proves to be too good of a friend. Erik and Justin get into the weeds with the original Teen Wolf film. The Twilight and Vampire Diaries vibes are unavoidable as well. Erik cannot deny he is a Crystal Reed fan. Stiles turns out to be the surprising favorite in this version of the tale. The problem of high school shows is addressed. The pair find a new role for Bruce Campbell. Justin tries to figure out why the show bothered to use the Teen Wolf branding. Geography Corner leads to a surprising filming location. It is unclear if star Tyler Posey is a lead and the difficulties of depicting werewolves in live action are explored.

Michelle Stiles discusses her excellent book "One Idea To Rule Them All: Reverse Engineering American Propaganda" where she describes how we are being "idea bullied" and that the elite have a near all-encompassing grip on information at all levels of society and governance. She goes through some of the key history and players which include Gustave Le Bon, Edward Bernays, and Walter Lippmann and discusses "Operation Sheepskin" and "Operation Spider's Web". There are a number of things we need to do to reverse course. She has previously authored two works: Fast Track Your Recovery from a Total Knee Replacement: How to Eliminate Pain and Pain Medicine the Quickest Way Possible and Color and Laugh Your Way to Knee Replacement Recovery. While the writing of One Idea to Rule Them All by a physical therapist may seem like a metaphysical oddity or quirk of the universe, it is simply the product of an active mind in the quest for truth. The barriers to accurate perception today are plentiful and well laid out in this book, which serves as a concise guide to unveiling the machinations of idea bullying so that they are easily recognizable by those of high school age and beyond; to those of both right and left persuasion-in short, to anyone who senses in their bones that something in the world is off-kilter and can't quite put their finger on the source. *Podcast intro music is from the song "The Queens Jig" by "Musicke & Mirth" from their album "Music for Two Lyra Viols": http://musicke-mirth.de/en/recordings.html (available on iTunes or Amazon)

This week, fresh off of hanging out in person in Vancouver over the weekend, your intrepid hosts are taming the shrew in a modern high school setting to undeniably classic results as we close out Feb2ary Is For Lovers with the movie that launched Heath Ledger to stardom. It's 1999's 10 Things I Hate About You, directed by Gil Junger and starring Ledger, Julia Stiles, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Larisa Oleynik, David Krumholtz, Andrew Keegan, Susan May Pratt, Gabrielle Union, Larry Miller and Allison Janney. The first of a couple Shakespeare adaptations transposed into modern high school for Stiles, the movie makes good use of her charms as well, but this is undeniably Ledger's movie and he crushes as the heart-throb lead. Plus: We've got another Movie Theatre Field Report as J Mo makes the case for a Red Hulk as Joe Biden reading of Captain America: Brave New World because I mean, sure, why the hell not. If you'd like to watch the movie before listening along to our discussion, 10 Things I Hate About You is currently streaming in Canada on Disney+, Crave, Starz, and Hollywood Suite at the time of publication. Other works discussed in this episode include Top Gun: Maverick, The Social Network, Harriet The Spy, The Rugrats Movie, The Incredible Hulk, We Live In Time, The Wild Robot, The Order, Ripley, Severance, Killers of the Flower Moon, Oppenheimer, Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, Anyone But You, The Bourne Identity, Orphan: First Kill, Third Rock From The Sun, Clueless, Get Smart's Bruce & Lloyd: Out of Control, and Grease among many more. We'll be back next week to kick off Hackmonth (Gene Hackmarch?), as we salute the late great Gene Hackman with a month-long tribute to one of the best to ever do it, beginning with Hoosiers next week, finishing out with The Royal Tenenbaums as our March canon entry, and making stops along the way including Crimson Tide and The Conversation. Sad to see the old man go, but my god what a career and we can't wait to spend the next month discussing it in depth. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!

Today's show I caught up with one I call a friend and brother in Scott Stiles who has been very influential in me being a podcast. He gave his insight on the upcoming Air Capital Hoopfest coming up this weekend at Newman University with high caliber high school talent and he also gave his insight on Myles Garrett wanting to leave Cleveland. Also caught up with Coach Bryan Chadwick HC of the Derby HS Lady Panthers who came up short in there quest to take the mid-season championship at the Glaciers Edge Tournament in Emporia. Talked about how this team has grown from the first game playing without star player Macayla Askew to having to play without her a second time. One word he used to summarize his team is trust. Also mentioned a player due to injuries decided to concentrate her focus on softball in Carsen Carpenter. When asked what was missed about her he stated her physicality and willingness to take a charge.
Was the outlaw Jesse James a cross-dresser? Probably not, but an interesting story claims he dressed as a young lady on at least one occasion. Also discussed is how Jesse earned his nickname (Dingus!), Jim Lane and the Osceola massacre, the Lawrence massacre, how to properly pronounce Glassgow, American Primeval, Jim Bridger, and whether or not the Missouri guerrillas were on team good guy or team bad guy. Welcome to The B-Side! Here we talk about movie stars and move directors! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between. Sometimes we are lucky enough to even speak with them about their work. And sometimes, they are both a movie star and a movie director. Today that's Julia Stiles, director of Wish You Were Here, now in theaters and available digitally on February 4th. Our B-Sides today include O, The Business of Strangers, and It's a Disaster. Stiles discusses the filmmakers she's worked with in the past and how they influenced her decisions sitting in the director's chair (the best ones “set a tone of calmness” she says), making friends on the South Carolina set of O, and becoming more intentional with the creative choices in her career (including auditioning for Silver Linings Playbook). We also chat about Wish You Were Here, her feature debut as a filmmaker. Stiles mentions guarding against the saccharine to tell “a mature love story.” There's also considerable praise of lead actress Isabelle Fuhrman and her incredible range, as well as a story about calling filmmaker Doug Liman for sailing advice. Speaking of Liman, Dan and Conor take a moment to unpack Nicky Parsons from the Bourne franchise, the efforts(?) of Tony Gilroy, and a crucial line read in Ultimatum that adds so much depth to Stiles' role. Finally, we cover how exactly Stiles got the great Vanessa Carlton and her partner John McCauley to do the score to her film. Early 2000s icons unite! And there is a brief, insightful conversation on why exactly Stiles chose to do all of those Shakespeare adaptations early on in her career. This is a follow up to the previous episode about Caitlin Clarks' comments after winning TIME magazine Athlete of the Year. She acknowledged she had white privilege and it didn't go over too well. Some agree with her, some don't, some thought it wasn't the time or place to bring it up, but pretty much everyone had an opinion about it. In today's episode, supported by AstraZeneca, we had the pleasure of speaking with Sandip P. Patel, MD, and Brendon M. Stiles, MD, about the FDA approval of perioperative durvalumab (Imfinzi) for patients with resectable non–small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Dr Patel is a professor of medicine in the Department of Medicine at the University of California, San Diego. Dr Stiles is a professor of cardiothoracic surgery and chief of the Divisions of Thoracic Surgery and Surgical Oncology in the Department of Cardiothoracic & Vascular Surgery, as well as the associate director of Surgical Oncology at the Montefiore Einstein Comprehensive Cancer Center in Bronx, New York. On August 15, 2024, the FDA approved durvalumab plus platinum-containing chemotherapy in the neoadjuvant setting, followed by durvalumab monotherapy in the adjuvant setting, for the treatment of adult patients with resectable NSCLC with no known EGFR mutations or ALK rearrangements. This regulatory decision was backed by findings from the phase 3 AEGEAN trial (NCT03800134), in which the median event-free survival was not reached (95% CI, 31.9 months-not estimable [NE]) in patients who received the durvalumab regimen vs 25.9 months (95% CI, 18.9-NE) in those who received placebo plus chemotherapy (stratified HR, 0.68; 95% CI, 0.53-0.88; P = .0039). In our exclusive interview, Drs Patel and Stiles discussed the significance of this approval, key efficacy and safety findings from AEGEAN, and how the clinical use of perioperative treatment regimens reinforces the importance of involving multidisciplinary teams in every step of a patient's treatment plan.
In the second hour of the show the guys played an interview of Mike Brown with Stiles and Watkins, got into Threefer Madness, and played their interview with DeMar DeRozan from Media Day.
