Since its debut, Solo Traveling with Tracee Ellis Ross has become Roku's most-watched unscripted original (show?) ever—igniting global conversations about self-discovery, independence, and the freedom of traveling alone. At Fast Company's 11th annual Innovation Festival this past September, Tracee and Brian Tannenbaum, head of Roku Originals, took to the stage for a candid conversation about how the series redefines unscripted storytelling and authentically reaches a unique audience, as well as why this experience has forever changed Tracee's expectations of creative and business partnerships. In this episode, I respond to Agnes Callard's controversial New Yorker article "The Case Against Travel," which argues that travel makes us the worst versions of ourselves. After visiting dozens of countries, I explain how traveling is just another hobby that a person can pick up. I also concede a few points in the article, but ultimately argue why the article is incorrect. But, just like trial law, cross-examination is the best way to seek the truth, so it's good to see the counter-argument to travel. Book Here -> Going Solo
Key Takeaways from This EpisodeMost solo lawyers are happy. The ALPS survey found that 3 out of 4 solo attorneys feel satisfied in their work. That's much higher than lawyers in big or mid-size firms.Control matters more than money. Many lawyers leave larger firms because they want control over their schedule, clients, and workload—not just a big paycheck.Debt shapes career choices.Law school debt pushes a lot of people into jobs they didn't plan for. Over time, that can lead to burnout or regret.Less stress when you focus.Solos who pick one or two practice areas do better and even pay lower malpractice insurance. The more you “dabble,” the more risk you take on.Solo life doesn't mean lonely life. Many solos stay connected through Facebook groups, Slack channels, and local bar groups. Support is there—you just need to reach out.Health and vacation matter. Most solos in the survey rated their health as good or great, and many take real time off each year. When you take care of yourself, you do better work.Technology made going solo easier. You don't need a big office anymore. Tools like Clio and virtual offices make it possible to start a practice with low costs.More lawyers will keep going solo.About 76% of solos plan to stay that way. They like the freedom, the clients they serve, and the work they're building for themselves. The big message:You don't need to stay in a job that drains you. You can build a practice that fits your life—and still be a great lawyer.ALPS INSURANCE REPORT FINDS SOLO LAW FIRMS BUCKING THE LAWYER WELL-BEING CRISIS TRENDWhile solo practitioners make up 49% of private practice lawyers in the U.S., relatively little research or attention has focused specifically on America's solo community. At the end of 2024, ALPS endeavored to establish benchmark data about solo attorneys and their respective professional satisfaction to determine how this subset of the nation's legal workforce was faring. The findings, released in the 2025 Solo Attorney Well-Being Trends Report, were surprising. Most people think failure is the end. I thought that too — until I got rejected from every Ivy League school, barely scraped into Arizona State, and watched my career implode over and over again. In this raw episode, I'm pulling back the curtain on every spectacular failure that built my empire: the boss who said I'd leave dead bodies behind to get ahead, the million-dollar payout to a bad partner, and the moment I almost lost everything with weeks of cash left. From getting pushed out of companies to navigating a brutal divorce in front of my entire firm, these aren't just war stories — they're the blueprint for turning your biggest losses into your greatest wins. I share why the chip on your shoulder is worth more than a pat on the back, how to know when you're made of paper versus walls, and why your bank account is a direct reflection of the difficult conversations you're willing to have. If you've ever felt like you're drowning while trying to look calm on the surface, or if you're tired of playing it safe while watching others win big, this episode will show you exactly why failure isn't just the entry price to success — it's the only currency that matters. ___________ 00:00:00 Introduction 00:00:36 Welcome to the "Lowlight Reel" 00:00:59 College Rejection and the Arizona State Advantage 00:01:58 No Job Offers and the Vanguard Breakthrough 00:03:48 The Brutal Feedback at Vanguard 00:06:12 Breaking Into Goldman Sachs 00:07:50 Learning From Goldman's Elite 00:09:57 The State Street Hustle 00:11:52 First Time Firing Someone 00:15:52 Building a Billion Dollar Business 00:16:29 Divorce and Professional Attacks 00:18:18 Side Hustles During Corporate Drama 00:19:34 The CEO's Walking Warning 00:20:50 The Partnership Power Play 00:22:30 The Dinner Confrontation 00:25:27 Going Solo and Million Dollar Mistakes 00:28:06 Near Financial Collapse 00:30:49 Lessons on Failure and Growth ___________ MORE FROM BIGDEAL

In this episode of Untidy, Matilda and Hannah sit down with listener Jo Mackie to talk about one of the biggest decisions a person can make — becoming a single mother by choice. After years of dating, freezing her eggs, and quietly shelving her dream of motherhood, Jo found herself at 43 standing at a crossroads. Either grieve the life she thought she’d have, or create it on her own. With a little push from her closest friends, a fertility specialist who declared “we’re here to make babies, Jo,” and the universe conspiring in her favour, she embarked on a journey that would bring her son into the world. Jo talks us through what it’s really like: the IVF rollercoaster, choosing a donor, and navigating pregnancy and parenthood without a partner. She also shares her rare and beautiful ongoing relationship with her donor, Kyle, and the donor-sibling connections she’s fostering for Ashton’s future. This is a story of courage, friendship, and self-trust. It’s a reminder that family doesn’t always look the way you first imagined it, but it can still be absolutely perfect it its own unique way. ***VOTE FOR UNTIDY IN THE LISTENERS' CHOICE AWARD NOW TO HELP US TAKE IT OUT IN THE NZ PODCAST AWARDS! In this episode, Stephanie speaks with Sandeep Kumar, an Indian entrepreneur who transformed his family's traditional silk business into a cruelty-free vegan silk brand. Guided by his Jain values of non-violence, Sandeep closed all contracts with silk weavers in 2018 and launched a store offering plant-based and artificial silk alternatives, later expanding into natural dyes and sustainable techniques.Despite criticism and early challenges, his business now serves customers worldwide, earning PETA and Beauty Without Cruelty certifications. Sandeep shares his mission to educate consumers, challenge industry myths like “peace silk,” and inspire entrepreneurs to prioritize ethics, sustainability, and transparency over short-term profit. This is a powerful, must-hear story for every vegan entrepreneur who has faced significant challenges.Quote:So my message to all the entrepreneurs is that yes, we need profits to run our business, you know, for our livelihood. But we should make sure that we take care of the ecosystem, both the environment and other living beings, as well as the fellow human beings who deserve a better life. -- M. SandipkumarShow Notes:

Drawing from surveys and interviews detailed in her book The Vegan Transformation, Dr. Crawford shares key themes like values alignment, compassion, and empowerment, while highlighting that advocacy can take many forms depending on personality. She offers advice for entrepreneurs and new vegans: connect with your “why,” seek supportive communities, and trust your unique approach. In this episode, I talk about Munich, Germany. I knew nothing about it before I went. You'll hear about the 1972 Olympic tragedy, the Michael Jackson memorial, and the BMW museum. Munich is much more than the place where the guy who started WWII got started, the Bayern Munich Futbol/soccer team, and Oktoberfest. P.S.
