Melvyn Bragg and guests explore dragons, literally and symbolically potent creatures that have appeared in many different guises in countries and cultures around the world. Sometimes compared to snakes, alligators, lions and even dinosaurs, dragons have appeared on clay tablets in ancient Mesopotamia, in the Chinese zodiac, in the guise of the devil in Christian religious texts and in the national symbolism of the countries of England and Wales. They are often portrayed as terrifying but sometimes appear as sacred and even benign creatures, and they continue to populate our cultural fantasies through blockbuster films, TV series and children's books. It's an amazing bestiary that's really more like four books in one. I have so much to say about this book, but you can listen/watch the podcast to hear it all. We also have a couple of Deep Dives with Lucas on Patreon: We discuss the saddest extinction stories in the book and then, next week, we talk about his newest project, "Glatisant," which he wrote while shifting gears after the completion of "Book of Extinction." Lucas Zellers is an author and game designer at the intersection of natural history and game design. A marketing professional by day, educator by later in the day, and birdwatcher by whenever possible, Lucas helps mission-driven organizations of all sizes reach the right audiences through sustainable long-term growth strategies. Fantastic Beasts Franchise Spells Trouble: From Surprise Announcement to Uncertain Future

The Fantastic Beasts franchise, a spin-off from the beloved Harry Potter series, finds itself on shaky ground. Director David Yates has revealed that the series is currently on hold and not a priority for Warner Bros. Discovery. What's more, the initial plan for a five-movie series was not the studio's idea but a spontaneous revelation by author J.K. Rowling, catching the creative team off guard during a press event for the first film. The franchise's future looks uncertain due to declining box office earnings, an identity crisis that transformed the narrative, controversies surrounding cast changes and J.K. Rowling's views on transgender rights. While the first film saw immense success, subsequent entries struggled, with dwindling interest and a shift from creatures to a wizarding world war storyline. For fans of the magical world, it seems the Fantastic Beasts series is currently under a spell of uncertainty, with no new movies in sight.

Composer Ian Chen says writing the soundtrack for the Chinese mythology-inspired Fantastic Creatures by Blue Callisto Studios was a dream project because he combined his love of traditional Chinese instruments with the myths he listened to as a child and his love of real-time strategy games. He enjoyed the challenge of combining traditional Chinese instruments with Western ones to bring out the best qualities of both. Fantastic Creatures uses Chinese myths of creation and destruction to give the player a choice to bring the desolate world back to live, or destroy evertying. Ian says he enjoyed giving a musical voice to the ancient gods and godesses whose stories he learned as a child. Ian's soundtrack was nominated for Game Music of the Year by the Game Audio Network Guild. Although it didn't receive the award, Ian says it was an amazing honor to have his first full-length game score recognized alongside those of established game composers. And it's whetted his appetite to write more
