Consider, gentle listener, the chordophone family of musical instruments. It's a large, diverse brood including almost anything with stretched strings: zithers, lyres, harps, lutes, guitars, the violin family, hundreds of ethnic string instruments like the Japanese koto and the African kora, and not least — keyed zithers like the harpsichord and the piano. Chordophones can be plucked, strummed, bowed, keyed, or struck. Looking back in time, zithers, lyres and harps were the foundational instruments of the chordophone family. They were used in antiquity to accompany recitations and promote healing. On this transmission of Hearts of Space, we ride the soft strings of the harp and zither to a place close to silence, on a program called 'CHORDOPHONICS.' Music is by PETER STERLING, HARP 46, LYSA LYNNE, DA WO's, HAROLD BUDD, CYMBER LILY QUINN, KLAUS WIESE, and LARAAJI. [ view playlist ] [ view Flickr image gallery ] [ play 30 second MP3 promo ]

I've been listening to the music of Rafael Anton Irisarri for a long time. The oldest album of his that I have is 2007's Daydreaming. I'm listening to it as I type this and wow, I'd forgotten how excellent it is. His music has changed a bit since then - now using drones, symphonic washes, tape loops, layers of distortion and "bleached out textures." So I was excited when he offered to do a guest mix. Um, yes please! This mix is everything that I love about guest mixes because it takes twists and turns that I normally do not so it kept me engaged to whole way through. Here's what Rafael has to say about this set: "I crafted this mix as Spring gently dissolves into Summer, drawing inspiration from perennial favorites like Arvo Pärt and Harold Budd. It features the work of many dear friends and colleagues such as Sylvain Chauveau and Federico Durand, as well as some favorite tracks I've mastered at my Black Knoll Studio in New York. This includes pieces from William Basinski, Eluvium, Michael Muller, and Julia Kent, along with contributions from Grand River, Animated Matter (Hannah Elizabeth Cox), Concepción Huerta, Christina Giannone, Pepo Galán, and Karen Vogt. Adding a personal touch, I've included a piece from my latest album, released on my newly minted Black Knoll Editions, in collaboration with the esteemed Italian producer Abul Mogard. There's also a special collaborative piece I created with the brilliant Julianna Barwick a couple of years ago. Hope you enjoy!  Looking forward to playing some shows this summer, starting in Italy on July 7th with Abul Mogard in Rome at Halfdie Festival, then later on September 14 at Ametric Festival in Chania, Greece. Stay tuned for more announcements by following on Instagram @blackknoll or at www.irisarri.org."   Thanks Rafael for this amazing mix!   Here are links to all the music used in this mix: https://ghostly.bandcamp.com/album/thousands-of-eyes-in-the-dark https://animated-matter.bandcamp.com/album/selkie https://federicodurand.bandcamp.com/album/flor-imaginaria https://www.amazon.com/Apollo-Atmospheres-Soundtracks-Brian-Eno/dp/B000003S1E https://beaconsound.bandcamp.com/album/lower-river-reworks https://williambasinski.bandcamp.com/album/on-reflection https://abulmogard.bandcamp.com/album/impossibly-distant-impossibly-close https://ecmrecords.com/product/arvo-part-tabula-rasa-gidon-kremer-keith-jarrett-tatjana-grindenko-alfred-schnittke-the-12-cellists-of-the-berlin-philharmonic-orchestra-staatsorchester-stuttgart-dennis-russell-davies-lithuan/ https://sylvainchauveau.bandcamp.com/album/un-autre-d-cembre https://eluvium.bandcamp.com/album/whirring-marvels-in-consensus-reality https://headphonecommute.bandcamp.com/album/for-ukraine-volume-2 https://www.amazon.com/Lovely-thunder-HAROLD-BUDD/dp/B00004XNLZ/ref=sr_1_1?crid=3SE3RKREFK46O&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.lEh9qetRmaBVCr72TtjwA5RjuHqSmI-OmCaB1sChoxY._GCIjpRo_wRaKREhIt1SrdMNfgMKbTh7Ieu0Nd27hxI&dib_tag=se&keywords=Harold+Budd+-+Lovely+Thunder&qid=1718556861&sprefix=harold+budd+-+lovely+thunder%2Caps%2C300&sr=8-1 https://facture.bandcamp.com/album/family-harmony https://concepcionhuerta.bandcamp.com/album/harmonies-from-betelgeuse https://pitp.bandcamp.com/album/glazed-vision   Cheers!     T R A C K L I S T : 00:00   Grand River - This Was Us (VA: Thousands of Eyes in the Dark, 2019) 01:53   Animated Matter - Follow (Selkie, 2021) 04:28   Federico Durand - Flor Imaginaria (Flor Imaginaria, 2020) 06:41   Brian Eno, Daniel Lanois, and Roger Eno - Signals (Apollo: Atmospheres and Soundtracks, 1983) 08:16   Michael Muller - Glyph II (Julia Kent Rework) (Lower River Reworks, 2020) 12:52   William Basinski & Janek Schaefer  . . . on reflection (four) (“ . . . on reflection “, 2022) 15:12   Abul Mogard & Rafael Anton Irisarri - Place of Forever (AM Radio edit) (Impossibly Distant, Impossibly Close, 2024) 21:52   Arvo Pärt - Fratres For String Quartet (Fratres, 1977) 31:22   Sylvain Chauveau - La Lettre Qu'il N'Envoya Jamais (Un Autre Décembre, 2003) 32:56   Eluvium - Vibration Consensus Reality(for Spectral Multiband Resonator) ((Whirring Marvels In) Consensus Reality, 2023) 41:06   Julianna Barwick + Rafael Anton Irisarri - Thalasso (For Ukraine Vol. 2, 2022) 46:21   Harold Budd - Sandtreader (Lovely Thunder, 1986) 51:32   Pepo Galán feat. The solo piano: a sound that's been evolving for over 300 years. It's perfectly happy all by itself, but it also plays exceptionally well with others. Flexible by design, the piano has been a mainstay in classical music and jazz, and a key element in traditional and popular music. With the arrival of ambient, minimal and new age music in the 1970s, the piano was expanded and dematerialized through studio magic, and combined with ambient and electronic textures to create spatial sound images. On this transmission of Hearts of Space, the acoustic piano meets ambient atmospheres, on a program called CONFLATION. Ahhh, the advent of spring. It arrives in fits and starts... a few warm days punctuated by brisk winds and unpredictable storms. In March, we pass the spring equinox and have a bright new season. The trees bud and blossom, and the natural world stirs and awakes. After the constriction and enclosure of winter, it's a time to stretch, breathe deep, and expand. The Ambient soundscapes of the season are brighter, bolder, larger, with a sense of possibility, even hope. The long winter is past, the joy of spring and the blissful days of summer are at hand.     Thanks to our good friends at Nettwerk Music we have another wonderful guest mix to share. The mix is called "Infinitely Small", expertly curated by Htennek Niwhsa. Piano is the main instrument throughout this lovely set. I don't listen to quite as much piano music as I used to so it was a great to hear so many track featuring the instrument. This would be a great mix to listen to on a Sunday morning with coffee and the paper. Ken Harrison and Ashwin Sood are the masterminds behind the Htennek Niwhsa project. I'll them tell you about this warm and inviting mix: "We're so pleased to be asked to do a guest mix for Low Light! We've spent the last two years soaking in a bath of simple but pure melodies that an unknown composer named Htennek Niwhsa prepared. We've searched unsuccessfully for him but, in our quest, have found him to be a patient teacher. This playlist is a reflection of the lesson Htennek taught us about the value of slowing down and noticing the small and seemingly insignificant. Universes contained in a miniature figurine. Symphonies contained in a well thought out melodic phrase. We've compiled this mix from other composers who we think shared Htennek's vision - some of them friends, some of them heroes." The new EP "The Smell of a Solitary House" by Htennek Niwhsa just came out last week, March 8th. Here's the link - https://htennekniwhsa.bandcamp.com/album/the-smell-of-a-solitary-house  If you like this, you'll like the new EP. Definitely check it out. She performed all of the instruments on this album. The album was not immediately popular but seeded the nascent ambient movement that was growing in Japan at the time. Takashi Kokubo, “A Dream Sails Out To Sea - Scene 3” (2019 Light In The Attic). Originally released in 1987, this track was part of the new wave of Japanese ambient music. By that time, Kokubo was already reknown for his synthesizer skills on a part with Isao Tomita. He turned to sound design and ambient music and has been instrumental in addition to creating such sounds as the nationally-used mobile phone earthquake alert and credit card payment jingles. Yoichiro Yoshikawa, “Nube” from Cyprus (1988 Eastworld). Original sound track of Japanese TV program. Yoshikawa was already a reliable session musician when he acquired one of the first Phophet-5 synthesizers in Japan. He quickly became a go-to composer for television and other purposes, such as soundscapes for museum exhibitions. Tetsu Inoue, “Low of Vibration” from Ambiant Otaku (1994 Fax +49-69/450464). Before I met Tetsu around the year 2000, I was fascinated by music such as this which had all of the elements of ambient music—slow and forming harmonies, spatial rhythms rather than beats, and a sustained energy throughout—without sounding at all like something out of an Eno production. Produced and performed by Tetsu Inoue. Kenji Kawai, “Ghostdive” from Ghost in the Shell (Original Soundtrack) (1995 RCA). An ambient work from the popular movie soundtrack.Composed, Performed, Produced, Arranged, Keyboards, Instruments, Kenji Kawai; synthesizer, Hironori Houki. Waveform Transmission, “V 1.3” from V 1.0-1.9 (1996 Silent). Analog Tone Engineering and Realization, Recordings Of The Dead, Shortwave, Field Recordings Made During Periods Of Highly-charged Paranormal Activity, Korg MS 10, Korg MS 20, Korg MS 50, Roland System 100 Synthesizers, Home Built Analog Synthesizers, Tape, Loops, Chris Troy; Digital Audio Graphs, Granular Synthesis, Microwave Communications, Psycho-acoustics, Tape, Loops Otari MX 5050 loops, Rod Modell. Experimental Audio Research, “Automatic Music (For Oscillator, Ring Modulator & Filter Clusters)” from Pestrepeller (1999 Ochre Records). UK release, limited to 1000 copies. Engineer, Serge Modular Music System, Sonic Boom (Pete Kember). Some interesting modular synthesizer ambience. John Foxx and Harold Budd, “Raindust” from Translucence + Drift Music (2003 Edsel Records). Composed, produced, and performed by Harold Budd, John Foxx. John Foxx and Harold Budd, “Some Way Through All the Cities” from Translucence + Drift Music (2003 Edsel Records). Composed, produced, and performed by Harold Budd, John Foxx. Pete Namlook, Tetsu Inoue, “Ethereal Being” from 2350 Broadway 4 (2007 Fax +49-69/450464). Composed, produced, and performed by Pete Namlook, Tetsu Inoue. Recorded at Bretton Hall, New York and Klanglobor Hödeshof. Tetsu was an endless collaborator. Here he and the wondrous Pete Namlook wove some ambient magic. Tetsu Inoue, “Kaze” from Inland (2007 Fax +49-69/450464). Written, performed and produced by Tetsu Inoue. This was his post-glitch faze, which brought together, strangely enough, element so his earlier ambient work and glitch music for computers. Masuko Shinji, “Woven Music for Blue Steppe” from Woven Music (2011 Jagjaguwar). All music, vocals and guitar, (Shinji Masuko). This is a project by Masuko, who sometimes works with the Boredoms. It has a characteristic high but sustained energy level that flirts with the outer reaches of the ambient music concept. Caroline Park, “Grain 5” from Grain (2011 Private Chronology). This is a cassette release by Park, often known her for generative composition work and electronic improvisations based on parameters that she defines. Recorded, performed, and mixed between May 2010 and January 2011 in Los Angeles and Boston. Sarah Davachi, “First Cadence” from Antiphonals (2021 Late Music). Composed, Recorded, Performed, Mellotron (bass flute, recorder, oboe), Tape Echo, Sarah Davachi. A recent ambient work by this contemporary experimenter. In the background: An example of ambient music from the program Droneo by Henry Lowengard, which produces self-generating ambient music on a smart phone. “Droneo 1.5 vanDelay and Ape,” (5:25). Opening and closing sequences voiced by Anne Benkovitz. Additional opening, closing, and other incidental music by Thom Holmes. See my companion blog that I write for the Bob Moog Foundation. Episode 110 Before and After Ambient, Part 1 Playlist Erik Satie, “Vexations” (1893-94), First, we will hear two piano versions (1 and 4) of this short work that was intended to be played repeatedly in one sitting 840 times in succession. The piano version was performed by Jeroen van Veen on the album Satie, Complete Piano Music (2016 Brilliant Classics). Then, we will hear an electronic version by Bhutan from Vexations (2016 Venado). Argentinean group Bhutan realized this electronic version of the Erik Satie piece in 2016. I thought it would be fitting to open the program with this because Satie's was one of the first works to be recognized in recent times as a kind of proto ambient composition. Satie preferred the term “furniture music” and thought that it would be suitable for background sound during a dinner party. The Bhutan version, realized in electronic instrumentation, is a fitting bridge of the old and the new when it comes to ambient compositions. John Cage, “In A Landscape” (1948) from In A Landscape played by Victoria Jordanova (2007 Arpaviva Recordings). This early Cage work was originally arranged either for piano or harp. It is very much the interpretation that makes this akin to ambient music. I selected this version for electric harp because it maintains the original's sense of suspended time and energy. I also like William Orbit's version but he took the orchestration to greater lengths and transforming it into something not so ambient. There is also a really quiet piano version by Stephen Drury which remains true to Cage's original intent of being “soft and meditative” with “resonances” being sustained by depressing both pedals throughout the performance. But I included this version for electric harp by Jordanova because it is more in tune with the electronic nature of the music we feature in this program. Morton Feldman, “Projection 1” (1950) from Arne Deforce, Yutaka Oya, Patterns In A Chromatic Field (2009 Aeon). Cello, Arne Deforce; Piano, Yutaka Oya; composed by, Morton Feldman. This is an acoustic work by Feldman (I couldn't find any electronic renditions) but I include it to draw similarities to the work of Harold Budd, also a pianist. In fact, Feldman was a long-standing favorite of Budd. Raymond Scott, “Sleepy Time” from Soothing Sounds for Baby, Volume 1 (1964 Epic). This legendary work is from a set of electronic and ambient records that Scott produced in the early 1960s as background music to help babies go to sleep. The electronic music was produced with his own creation, the Electronium, a from-scratch built custom synthesizer that combines electronic sequencing with tone generation and various filters. Eliane Radigue, “Vice - Versa, Etc. (Mix 1)” (1970) from (2013 Vice - Versa, Etc.). Processed tape reorder feedback. Realized at the composer's studio in Paris. Premiered in 1970 at Galerie Lara Vincy in Paris, on the occasion of a group exhibition. The stereo synthesis presented here was made in Lyon at Studio Fluorescent between 2010 and 2011 by Emmanuel Holterbach. Produced, composed, recorded using feedback by Eliane Radigue. Originally conceived as a sound installation, using several reel-to-reel tape players controlled through a mixing desk. The tapes could be played at different speeds, either forward or backward, right channel only, left channel only or simultaneously. The audience could create their own mix. Teresa Rampazzi (N.P.S.), “Environ” (1970) from Musica Endoscopica (2008 Die Schachtel). Created in 1970, this work represents a kind of reproduction in electronic sound of an ambient environment, peppered with noise and even voice. Rampazzi was a pioneering female composer of electronic music who founded the N.P.S. (Nuove Proposte Sonore) group and studio, where this was realized. Harmonia, “Hausmusik” from Harmonia (1974 Brain). Recorded and produced June - November '73 in the Harmonia home studio. Guitar, Piano, Organ, electronic percussion, Michael Rother; Organ, Keyboards, Guitar, electronic percussion, J. Roedelius; Synthesizer, Guitar, electronic percussion, D. Moebius. Brian Eno, “Discreet Music” (excerpt) from Discreet Music (1976 Obscure). Synthesizer with Digital Recall System, Graphic Equalizer, Echo Unit, Delay, Tape, Brian Eno. Brian Eno (b. 1948) worked with tape delay much in the manner defined by Oliveros for I of However, he expressed a somewhat indifferent attitude toward the outcome. He described the realization of Discreet Music (1975): “Since I have always preferred making plans to executing them, I have gravitated toward situations and systems that, once set into operation, could create music with little or no intervention on my part. That is to say, I tend toward the roles of planner and programmer, and then become an audience to the results.” Eno's composition consisted of a diagram of the devices used to generate the music. His approach was identical to that of Oliveros except that the sound material was specifically melodic and he did not modify or interact with the sound once the process was set in motion. The result in Discreet Music is the gradual transformation of a recognizable musical phrase. These 10 minutes are excerpted from the beginning of the extended work lasting 31 minutes. Brian Eno, “Through Hollow Lands (For Harold Budd)” from Before and After Science (1977 Island). Bass, Paul Rudolph; Vocals, Bell, Mini-Moog, CS80, AKS synthesizers, piano, guitar, Brian Eno. This is one of the only tracks that I would consider to be ambient from this album. Robert Ashley, “Automatic Writing” (excerpt) (1974–79) from Automatic Writing (1979 Lovely Music). This work was much talked about when it was released on record by Lovely Music Ltd. in 1979. Ashley wrote it over a five-year period after having just come back from his self-imposed exile from composing in the early 1970s. He performed it many times in various formative stages with the Sonic Arts Union before finally committing it to disc. It does indeed have a vocal, but it is also imbued with quiet, ASMR kinds of sounds that mesmerize. The basic musical material of Automatic Writing was the spoken voice, closely miked, uttering what Ashley characterized as “involuntary speech”: random, seemingly rational comments that might not make sense at all, depending on the context in which they were heard. These 10 minutes are excerpted from the beginning of the extended work lasting 46 minutes. Sri Dinesh, “Le Chant Des Étoiles” from Para Symphonie (1978 Alain Grima). French album of music to accompany meditation. It consists largely of short, repeated organ patterns and falls within the frame of mind for which ambient music was intended. Brian Eno, “2/2” from Ambient 1: Music for Airports (1978). Engineer, Conny Plank (yes, the producer of Kraftwerk). Composed, conceptualized, produced and engineered by Brian Eno. Theresa Rampazzi, “Atmen Noch” (1980) from from Musica Endoscopica (2008 Die Schachtel). Conrad Schnitzler, “Control B” from Control (1981 Dys). Edition of 1000 copies. An electronic work by Schnitzler, who played the devices, produced, and recorded the music. Opening background music: Brian Eno and Peter Chilvers, Bloom 3.2 (10) (2014 Opal Ltd.). Bloom is a generative music application that composes ambient music. This recording was made using Bloom running in “Classic” mode on a Macbook Pro running Ventura 13.5.2. Opening and closing sequences voiced by Anne Benkovitz. Additional opening, closing, and other incidental music by Thom Holmes. See my companion blog that I write for the Bob Moog Foundation. Summer often departs unwillingly, with warm days that linger into autumn. In years to come, the transition will probably take even longer, but eventually the sun sinks ever lower, the days grow shorter, the light dims, and the natural world prepares for the long winter to come: drying, darkening, withering, dropping, and dying — to be reborn. The music of the season slows, darkens, and takes on a more somber affect, echoing the complex colors and diminishing energy of autumn, as the sun withdraws to its winter retreat. On this transmission of HEARTS of SPACE, an electro-acoustic journey in the autumn soundscape, on a program called FALLING LEAVES. Music is by LUDOVICO EINAUDI, JOHANN JOHANNSON, KEVIN KELLER, MARCONI UNION, DIATONIS, TIM STORY & HANS-JOACHIM ROEDELIUS, ROBIN GUTHRIE & HAROLD BUDD, and BRIAN ENO. Today's guest deejay is Jonas Munk, AKA Manual, and one-half of Billow Observatory, with his partner, Jason Kolb. Billow Observatory has appeared on several mixes on Soundwave, and I'm excited to have Jonas share his mix with us. Jonas says he selected music that inspired them since day one and some more recent discoveries. In addition to his musical endeavors, Thomas runs the label Azure Vista Records. He has released two Billow Observatory albums, one of Jonas's solo work and an album from Jason's band, Auburn Lull. I eagerly anticipate their soon-to-be-released new album. Jonas's carefully curated selection of tracks in this mix all center around the interplay of ambient, electronic, and experimental music, woven together to create a dreamy and ethereal atmosphere. You can expect lush soundscapes, intricate melodies, and beautiful collaborations between artists like Harold Budd and Brian Eno with Daniel Lanois and Robert Fripp and Brian Eno. He also includes standout tracks from electronic music pioneers like Biosphere and Boards of Canada. As I sit down at my kitchen table to begin another day's work, I can't help but feel grateful for the simple pleasures in life — a cup of coffee, the view of the world from my rooftop, and of course, Jonas's mix playing in the background. It's been a constant companion as I ease into my daily routine. I know you'll feel the same way too. In the early 1970s, English guitarist ROBERT FRIPP (of the seminal progressive rock band KING CRIMSON) began a series of experiments with tape delay echo loops that he came to call "Frippertronics." Fripp's collaboration with fellow electronic experimentalist BRIAN ENO yielded two influential albums of treated electric guitar and synthesizers. NO PUSSYFOOTING (from 1972) and EVENING STAR (in 1974) defined a new sound: the infinite spatial guitar. Whether endlessly looped or indefinitely sustained, Fripp transformed, expanded and dematerialized the electric guitar by feeding it back on itself — and created one of the foundations of today's ambient soundscapes. On this transmission of HEARTS of SPACE we borrow a term from computer programming, on a descending journey for fall called INFINITE LOOPS. Daniel Lanois is our guest for this latest Bonus Track. The legendary producer, artist and songwriter joins Matt to discuss his newest solo album, Player, Piano, which is available now.The album features a series of exotic instrumental piano performances and was recorded at Lanois' studio in Toronto with the help of co-producer Dangerous Wayne Lorenz. “Making this record transported me at a time when I couldn't go anywhere,” Lanois reflects. “I got to travel to Cuba and Mexico and Jamaica. I got to visit with the ghosts of Erik Satie and Oscar Peterson and Harold Budd. I got to go back in time to my work with Brian Eno and Kate Bush and Emmylou Harris. All without ever leaving my studio.” In order to achieve the timeless-sounding recordings on Player, Piano, Lanois and Lorenz set about transforming each of the three pianos in the studio, dampening the strings with tea towels and dulling the percussive impact of the hammers by adding small felt pads to the heads. When it came time to record, they used vintage ribbon mics and arranged them behind the instruments rather than in front in an effort to further soften the sound. “I decided that if I was going to make a piano record, I wanted it to sound like recordings from the ‘40s and '50s, back when the piano was soft and beautiful,” explains Lanois. As one of the most acclaimed and influential producers of the modern era, he's helmed iconic albums for everyone from Bob Dylan and Neil Young to U2 and Peter Gabriel. As a prolific and critically acclaimed songwriter, he's composed scores for Oscar-winning films and blockbuster video games in addition to releasing more than a dozen genre-bending solo records. Rolling Stone declared that his “unmistakable fingerprints are all over an entire wing of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame” (think The Joshua Tree, Wrecking Ball, Time Out Of Mind), while NPR lauded him as the author of his own “brilliant albums of heartfelt songs.” Player, Piano follows the 2021 release of Lanois' album Heavy Sun, which received wide acclaim from outlets such as SPIN, World Cafe, No Depression and American Songwriter and more. Each song on Player, Piano is a portal, an invitation to lose yourself in the moment and disappear into a world of imagination and memory. Melodies unfold slowly with patience and grace; ethereal arrangements drift around them like fog rolling through the mountains. More than just an album, Player, Piano is a gateway into a cinematic sonic universe full of mystery and wonder, a place where the lines between reality and fantasy blur and deep truths and desires reveal themselves in profound and unexpected ways.It was a joy to speak with Daniel and he shared some great stories from his past work, including experiences with Willie Nelson, Bob Dylan, the Neville Brothers and more.If you dig what we're doing with the podcast, check out our Patreon for bonus material related to these episodes, plus additional interviews and other fun stuff. Vanessa Wagner présente l'album Study Of The Invisible (InFiné). SOUNDWAVE : 126 : JOHAN DE REYBEKILL Today's guest deejay is Johan de Reybekill, AKA Phaedrus. I discovered Johan through Quasi, the album collaborated on with Dronny Darko (listen to Dronny's mix for Soundwave here). I was swept away by the experience and listened to John's projects and concerts. Of course, I invited John to guest deejay on Soundwave, and he's shared something wonderful with us. I have a routine for my four-year-old grandkid when it's time to sleep. I tell him a story that includes events from his day and his friends, the Little Old Mouse and Purple Monster. Then I play some ambient music for him to drift away to, usually Brian Eno, whom we call Uncle Eno. My go-to's are Eno's Ambient 4: On Land and The Pearl, an album he recorded with the late Harold Budd. I've listed to a lot of Brian Eno since becoming a Dziadzia (that's Polish for “grandpa”), and as much as I love Eno's music, sometimes that means switching things up. Johan doesn't know it, but I've used today's mix to send my grandkid off to Sleepytime on more than one occasion. Johan has words about today's mix below. Join us next week when our guest deejay will be Sunwarper. See you then. In this mix I have worked with subtle contrasts like: “noisy / minimalistic”, “melodic / droning”, “dark / gentle", “static / volatile”. A majority of the pieces on the mix is from some of my favourite Scandinavian artists. The process of creating the mix made me realise just how much I love listening to music in that special way, where I am actively listening to the music in depth; its composition, qualities and details. I found myself going for long walks just to listen to the mix in its entirety, go home and make adjustments, go for another walk, and so on. I loved the process of working with my own and others' music as an integral part of what came to be the mix. It was a pleasure and an honour to contribute to Soundwave. Thanks, Joseph. Vanessa Wagner présente l'album Study Of The Invisible (InFiné). Is Robin Guthrie one of the most influential guitarists ever? Going back to his days with the Cocteau Twins, up to his stellar solo work the last 25 years, his shimmering, reverb-heavy style pretty much kicked off the Shoegaze and Dream Pop movements. Not to mention, it inspired every bedroom player to mess with the pedals and knobs to find that perfect sound. Robin has spent the last couple decades adding to his legacy by consistenly releasing stellar albums (mostly ambient, many with others including frequent collaborator Harold Budd). This embarrassment of riches continues as he's put out three beautiful EPs as well as the wonderful full length, Pearldiving, just in the last year! Robin joins us to discuss his approach to music making, some of his production work with artists like Lush and Ian McCulloch, and stories from the old Cocteau Twins days. As the guitarist/multi-instrumentalist and songwriter for The Cocteau Twins, Robin Guthrie's unique sonic palette helped spearhead and popularize the dream pop sub-genre, with songs that emerged like hazy daydreams through his unique combination of melody and his focused use of effects on albums like 'Treasure', 'Blue Bell Knoll' and 'Heaven or Las Vegas.' During that time, Guthrie also did extensive production work for a variety of artists including The Wolfgang Press, The Gun Club, A.R. Kane, Lush, Ian McCulloch, Guy Chadwick and The Veldt. While the Cocteau Twins folded in 1997, Guthrie forged ahead, continuing to produce, and also collaborating with artists like the late Harold Budd (including their score for the 2004 film Mysterious Skin), John Foxx, Mark Gardener among others. In addition, Guthrie has also led a prolific and engaging career all his own, and speaking of, he's back after a 9 year absence with both an EP ('Mockingbird Love') and a full-length album ('Pearldiving') both of which showcase his inimitable, ethereal and emotive sound through evocative instrumentals. In today's interview, Guthrie discusses why he's been away for so long, why he decided to put out two releases so close together, his creative process and signature sound, his memories of working with Harold Budd, the legacy and influence of The Cocteau Twins, and much more.     Last year we lost Harold Budd. And now, just six months later, we lose another icon in Jon Hassell.  It's nearly impossible to overstate his importance in shaping an entirely new sound, what he would call Fourth World music. His music has influenced scores of musicians and listeners. I've included a lot of Hassell's music in mixes over the years. And, considering he just released a fine album last year, I expected to be featuring his music in mixes for many more years. This mix is not an overview of his career. It's a collection of tracks that fit together well, starting with a track from the little known Million Dollar Hotel soundtrack, all the way to the final track, Last Night the Moon Came, which sounds like a good finishing cut. I wish I could say something eloquent or profound about Jon Hassell and his music, but I'm not that type of writer. I let the music speak for itself and, wow, did his music speak to me and many others. I will miss him.  Thanks for all your great music, Jon.   T R A C K L I S T : 00:00    Jon Hassell Gregg Arreguin Jamie Muhoberac Peter Freeman - AM (The Million Dollar Hotel 200) 05:52    Brian Eno & Jon Hassell - Chemisty (Fourth World 1 Possible Musics 1980) 11:06    Jon Hassell - Cool Down Coda (Seeing Through Sound 2020) 12:25    Jon Hassell - Empire I (Aka/Darbari/Java - Magic Realism 1982) 13:52    Jon Hassell - Sundown Dance (Earthquake Island 1979) 18:09    Jon Hassell - Air (Power Spot 1986) 23:09    Jon Hassell - Malay (Dream Theory In Malaya 1981) 29:36    Jon Hassell - Out of Adedara (City: Works of Fiction 1990) 33:55    Jon Hassell - Map of Dusk (Myths 3 1987) 35:10    Jon Hassell - Timeless (Seeing Through Sound 2020) 42:44    Jon Hassell - Maarifa Street (Maarifa Street: Magic Realism, Vol. 2 2005) 49:32    Jon Hassell - These Times (Dream Theory In Malaya 1981) 51:23    Jon Hassell - Last Hight the Moon Came (Last Night The Moon Came Dropping Its Clothes In The Street 2009) 62:15    end

Barney, Mark & Jasper quiz Nick about his distinctively personal music writing for the NME, Time Out and the Indie on Sunday, with especial reference to his 1986 interview with jazz-soul siren Anita Baker. This leads seamlessly to discussion of his terrific 2017 tome Voices: How a Great Singer Can Change Your Life, as well as to the harrowing experience of hearing loss that inspired 2012's The Train in the Night. In this episode, it was impossible to ignore the death of monstrous megalomaniac and murderer Phil Spector. After hearing a chilling audio clip of him speaking to Roy Carr in 1975, Nick and his hosts attempt to separate the man from the visionary architect of the "Wall Of Sound". (Now a certified psychotherapist, Nick compares Spector's narcissistic personality disorder to that of Donald Trump, who finally vacated the White House the day before this recording.) We also bid farewell to Ed "Duke Bootee" Fletcher, whose lyric for 'The Message' made rap superstars of Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five and played a huge part in the birth of "conscious hip hop".Somewhat less megalomaniacal than Spector is Miles Copeland III, whose rapid-fire voice we hear in audio clips from 1989. The man who seemed fated to follow in his dad's C.I.A. footsteps tells John Tobler how bankruptcy made him switch from Wishbone Ash to Wayne County – and how he launched I.R.S.     Off-kilter, strange, a bit askew, weird, oblique - are all ways to describe this mix. It's a little creepy too which makes for a perfect mix for Spooky Season. To create a Halloween mix it would be easy to grab some dark, dissonant ambient but as I've said before I'm not a dark ambient fan.
