Tara: —and discovering how we live. 'Cause they didn't know. Lee Rogers: No. Tara: And they were probably like me when I went there in my 20s with my cousins. Took a long road trip through Europe and was shocked at the poverty of the middle class, um, and the way that they lived compared to us. I'd always thought it was roughly equivalent. It's not. Well, this captures kind of what they were seeing. Headline in the Wall Street Journal—this is truly stunning, okay? And this is exactly what Democrats are trying to crush with the Democrat Socialists of America movement. Headline in the Wall Street Journal: "The US added 1,200 new millionaires a day—" Lee Rogers: Mhm. Tara: "—last year." Not last year—a day, last year. 1,200 new millionaires— Lee Rogers: A day. Tara: —a day. Okay. China, how many did, um, you know, how many millionaires are there? Okay, so you look at the United States of America. Let's start with that. Total millionaires in the United States of America—and this is remarkable—23.6 million. Lee Rogers: Mhm. Tara: That's out of 342 million people. Okay, China—what, three, four times bigger?—they've only got 5.2. This is exactly the system, uh, that the Democrats are hoping to embrace. Literally, a lot of it funded by China. I mean, you're—if you want to know what's going on in New York right now with the Commie Corridor, go pull the article by the New York Times—not the New York Post, the New York Times—in which they admit the Chinese Communist Party is now a huge influence on who wins the primaries. Lee Rogers: And you've got these American Democrats allied with them who want to take the property of the millionaires here in this country. Tara: Yes! They—because you shouldn't have it. Lee Rogers: Because you shouldn't have it. But what if you earned it? Well, you still shouldn't have it. Tara: Right! Wall Street Journal writes—I mean, every stat in the story is just mind-blowing. "America knows how to manufacture millionaires. Over 440,000 people, or more than 1,200 a day, became millionaires in the US a year, accounting for nearly half the world's new millionaires." Again, there's only like 342 million of us. It's incredible. Lee Rogers: Mhm. Tara: Why? Because capitalism and free markets work anywhere they're tried. They work anywhere they're tried. Why? Because they work off of human nature. Lee Rogers: Yeah. Tara: Um, more than 23.6 million Americans are now worth seven figures or more. And the US gains have come thanks in large part to surging financial markets. Lee Rogers: Yeah. Tara: Uh, and so, I mean, you know, you're watching this. Just to give you some idea, okay? And this is what these FIFA fans are reacting to. It's kind of a measure. If you look at, um, how many millionaires that we have here in America—okay, 23.6 million. If you combine Germany, the UK, France, Australia, the Netherlands, Italy, you only get 11.5. It's roughly the same population. So here in America, 23.6 million millionaires. You take what is essentially Europe, and you throw in Australia, to get to 11.5 million millionaires. So you can see their, um, you know, the way they live is nothing like the way we live. We are so wealthy comparatively, and that's what they were so shocked about when they came here. Lee Rogers: And it's also the space and the choice that we have in this country, despite the best efforts of many on the left to restrict that. I mean, what I think is so funny is when these Europeans are going to a Buc-ee's and they are just completely mind-blown. If we ever had a genuine democracy (and I would argue we never have) then it is clearly disintegrating now, along with the entire system with which it was entwined.  Everyone agrees we need something new, what we don't necessarily agree on across the board is the design of this new thing.  This week's guests are two people who spend their lives imagining how things might be different, particularly in the US, where even the pretence of democracy has been abandoned. Dr John Izzo is a friend of the podcast. Once an ordained Minister in a Presbyterian Church, he's now a bestselling author, speaker, and thought leader focused on social responsibility and intergenerational integration. He's a a Distinguished Fellow at The Stimson Center in Washington DC, and a Board Member of the Elders Action Network and the Elders Climate Action group. The Institute's Ministers Reflect project includes several interviews with former ministers in the devolved governments in the UK, and the model of long-form interviews with former ministers has been exported to a number of countries around the world. Of course, the political and cultural contexts differ, and the ease of access to former ministers varies between these countries. But there are many similarities between the experiences of ministers and the challenges they face in leading officials, passing legislation and getting things done in government. To discuss how ministers' roles vary around the UK and around the world, and how Ministers Reflect-style interviews can inform our understanding of government, we were joined by: Professor Caspar van den Berg, Chair in Global and Local Governance at the University of Groningen in the Netherlands, and member of the Dutch Senate Dr Hans Gutbrod, Associate Professor of Public Policy at Ilia State University in Georgia Akash Paun, Programme Director at the Institute for Government Dr Catherine Haddon, Programme Director at the Institute for Government This event was chaired by Tim Durrant, Programme Director at the Institute for Government. Squarely in the heart of the Trump administration, Steven Levitsky and Daniel Ziblatt published a book titled How Democracies Die which proved enormously popular. Celebrities read it. Obama read it. Most people you know probably pretended to have read it. Five years later, Levitsky and Ziblatt are back with a sequel of sorts, arguing that in the United States, democracy might never have been fully alive in the first place, strangled in the cradle by our very own constitution. To explain how their thinking has changed since How Democracies Die and discuss the new book, Tyranny of the Minority, we're thrilled to have on today's podcast Daniel Ziblatt, Eaton Professor of Government at Harvard University and director of the Transformations of Democracy group at Berlin's Social Science Center. In this episode, we poke around into all of the different ways the United States privileges minoritarian politics. Ziblatt explains that a major contribution of Tyranny of the Minority is showing how regular politics interact with our constitution's minoritarianism to create a particularly potent anti-democratic danger for the United States. I interviewed Dr. Michael Rectenwald in this episode. Dr. Rectenwald is the author of twelve books, including "The Great Reset and the Struggle for Liberty: Unraveling the Global Agenda", and is a distinguished fellow at Hillsdale College and a frequent contributor to the Mises Institute. He was a Professor of Liberal Studies and Global Liberal Studies at NYU from 2008 to 2019. He also taught at Duke University, North Carolina Central University, Carnegie Mellon University, and Case Western Reserve University. His scholarly and academic essays have appeared in numerous public journals and outlets, including The Quarterly Journal of Austrian Economics, The British Journal for the History of Science, and the Cambridge University Press anthology. He holds a Ph.D. in Literary and Cultural Studies from Carnegie Mellon University, a Master's in English Literature from Case Western Reserve University, and a B.A. in English Literature from the University of Pittsburgh. Michael recently announced his bid to seek the nomination of the Libertarian Party for President of the United States. We talked about his decision to run, and what he is hoping to accomplish with his campaign. We dived into multiple conversations, including how to effectively engage in local politics, the intersections between Christianity and libertarianism, our similar journeys to libertarianism/anarchism as two former leftists, and how libertarianism offers principles and effective solutions to divisive political/cultural issues such as abortion.
