Lukey Ryan loves to operate with time and space, but even he never thought he'd get to take a leisurely stroll in the park and stop for a cup of tea during a game! Time to Restump Podcast the tiptoeing through the tulips win over the Kangas. The Kangaroos just absolutely skedaddled. It was as if Luke Ryan was on the back of 4X4, armed with a spotlight and a Winchester! Was there divine intervention? Not since Moses parted the Red Sea has a safe and spacious passage to the promised land inexplicably appeared! It was a remarkable record tumbling day down at Bunbury, brought about by the contributions of both teams. You don't win 12 straight if you're not a serious outfit, but you don't destroy any opponent by 120+ points, hold them to just 3 behinds in a second half and put on 19 goals on the bounce without their deficiency assistance. However, at the same time, you can't manage such a feat if you're not rolling out an airtight functioning system and combining it with a relentless worth ethic and an insatiable hunger. Is there another ruckman in the league whose teammates willingly handball to? Maybe Brody Grundy but it'd still be due to a lack of comparable options. Hayden Young's first thought is ‘get the ball to Luke Jackson!' Even Luke Jackson's first thought when he gets his own ball is to handball to Luke Jackson! He is the AFL player prototype and unless there's a relaxing of the ethics and laws around cloning, he's going to remain a one-of-a-kind collector's item. We gotta talk Sammy Switkowski. JL's Einstein, the sharpest man in the west and I'm pretty sure a former Sale of the Century showcase winner! He's taken 9 injury plagued seasons to get to 117 games and he's potentially in his career best form. His work rate is unquestionable and on Saturday he saw personal reward with an equal career high three goal feat, something he has now managed three times. With two of those occasions coming this year, he's a vital piece of the September puzzle.I know we've won twelve on the bounce, we're twelve and one for the year, we're top of the tree, a game clear of Syndey in second, three and a half games and thirty percent ahead of the Hawks in third and 3/1 favourites for the flag…. but, for mine, the hype from all corners of the industry is a little uncomfortable. There is an unwanted element of forgone conclusion commentary about us and it's just a little bit unnerving. Yes, the ship has to leave the safety of the harbour at some stage but that means navigating unchartered waters! Give me back our comfortable underdog status, remove the intense magnified focus and let us return to our familiar footing of flying under the radar! Oh, who am I kidding, it's like a Tupperware container…. even if you could find the lid, there is no putting the lid on it. The lid is so far off, we can't even see the lid! The lid is in outer space! So, we live now, we throw cautious  optimism to the wind and go mental enjoying the thrilling journey and we worry about any possible unwanted consequences if or when  they arrive. We'll all take a breather over the bye, but before then, there is still plenty of purple praise to promulgate. So, put on your pants, pour yourself a piccolo, pitch in, park yourself on a plush perch, press play and partake in the purple prattle on the pod. Send us Fan MailSupport the show

It wasn't exactly the fist through the wall Clarko style, but JL left his mark at the GABBA, in more ways than one. Time to Restump Podcast Freo's felling of the former ferocious felines. He usually aborts his bouts of irritation inspired ire at the precise moment before impact, but JL's emotional reactions are evolving. A couple of annoyance fuelled batters of the beam above head at round 12, we wonder will windscreens O'Brien be required by seasons end? Is it a pressure outlet? A sign of a how real it has become? Suddenly we've genuinely got something to lose! Or, more likely, are we just theatrically highlighting something entirely insignificant for a moment of semi-comedic value? What a way to bring up 11 wins on the bounce against a rampaging Lions outfit. Yeah, wait a minute... rampaging, really? Who are we kidding... the Lions were all Aslans, they never came out of the wardrobe! The reality is though any time you beat Brisbane at the GABBA it's a big achievement and you have to play seriously good footy to do so. Having said that, what has happened to these now somewhat lethargic lions? They gave us so much space through the corridor, Elon wants to launch rockets into it!After two consecutive premierships has the hunger for the 3-peat waned? There were expectations they'd flick the switch after their previous two losses, but the wiring must be faulty because there's seemingly a disconnect there. But that's the extent of us being bewildered by Brisbane! Our all-round game, our strategies and defensive structure suffocated them. Our individuals' willingness to perform their roles our system depends on, never gave the Lions a look in.Paddy Voss, Josh Treacy and Jye Amiss functioned like a well-oiled machine. They're three vastly different roles which, when they work in harmony, all produce the same substantially beneficial outcome. And hasn't Matty Johnson stepped up with opportunistic permanent midfield minutes and in the absence of a couple of colleagues. To step in and destroy Hugo Garcia last week was big, but to back that up by nullifying Lachie Neale, was something else. Hopefully the ice on the hamstring was more cautionary awareness than strain or tear. We're 11 straight, we're top of the tree, we passed the Hawthorn test, we weathered St Kilda's pressure and now we've dispatched Brisbane on their home turf. If we scale the Sydney summit, the last true test box to tick, holy smokes, the potential big dance nerves will well and truly kick in!We're not a soap opera drama but we're Home and Away this week, playing North Melbourne away at home in Bunbury. However, before then, there's no time for Lion down! We still need to dissect last Saturday's successful safari hunt. In the Gabba jungle, the mighty Gabba jungle was the Lion sleeping that night? Or were we simply the purple Lion tamers? Let's chat it out on the pod. Send us Fan MailSupport the show

As Vossy always says, "everything is just a mindset." When it came to taking down Callum, will was key! Time to Restump Podcast the Friday night atonement. On a Friday night in May just over 12 months ago at Marvel Stadium we suffered an inconceivable 10 goal belting at the hands of the St Kilda stranglers. It was an insipid performance, one that had every Freo fan at wit's end. But what felt at the time a near West Coast Eagles type depth of despair we'd never surface from, amazing good came from it. It turned out to be the shock wakeup call we needed and the catalyst for absurd change. Fast forward a tick over 12 months to another Friday night in May, this time in WA, and the same Saints tried the same suffocating assault on us.But the times, they are and have been a changing. This Freo team of soldiers now deals with heat. We love heat, we eat heat for breakfast… ok we heat things up and eat them for breakfast, but you get the point. We've grown, we've matured and we've improved. We can now weather the storm, we can dig in, grind and then we can counter punch.Friday night was an important test for us. Sure, I hear what you're saying, the Saints aren't top of the tree? But the fact is they were far from that last year. They can though drive you into the ground and pressure you to distraction in true typical Rosco Lyon style. If we were unable to mentally cope with the pressure this time around, then our potential premiership hopes were all but a shattered dream. The fact is we couldn't really have been more impressive. We went toe to toe with the Sainters pressure for 3 quarters and then in the final term, class won out. The Saints threw everything at us and at one stage they got out to a 3-goal lead. Last year we may have panicked and capitulated. This year when we find ourselves in such a position, we see opportunity and respond with, “challenge accepted.” Arguably what was most pleasing was being able to perform and win in that manner without the reliance on Caleb Serong, Alex Pearce and Hayden Young. You can't remove three players of such prominence, importance and impact from any team and be unaffected by it, except it seems we can! It's always said you learn a lot more from your losses than you do your wins. Given we've now won 22 of 27 games since that fateful Friday night in May 2025, that must have been one hell of a lesson! There's no time for any laurel resting or momentary complacency though because we've got another big box to tick this coming weekend. After two beltings on the bounce, could you face the Brisbane Lions at a worse time? ‘Beware the wounded Lion' has never been more prescriptive.Lyon last week, Lions this week... what are we playing in the Serengeti?Anyhow, while there's no time for the club to stop and head wobble, there's always time for fans to strut after a victory! So, if there's a pep in your step and glide in your stride, join us as we swagger through Friday's cathartic consecration on the pod.Send us Fan MailSupport the show

Happy Smothers Day

In more ways than one, you can't have a smother without a mother and Luke Jackson just ensured it's a dual celebration! Time to Restump Podcast the harvesting of the Hawks.Thursday seems so long ago, yet the Wharfie Time signalling chiming bells continue celebratory ringing in my head. We got the test we needed against a formidable opponent, in the form of the Hawks, and we aced it. Consequently, any trace of a doubting Thomas tendency is now terminated! What a thrilling and thoroughly entertaining game it was. It wasn't 3 minute bursts here or there like we have been performing in recent weeks against lesser opposition. It wasn't working out to a lead before cue in the racking it. This was a 4-quarter high skilled, tactic changing, pressure fuelled grind in which we were better for longer. It took some doing but despite the Hawks enjoying a 22-point margin half way through the final term, it felt one goal either way was the open flood gate difference. But late in the piece when there were nervous tension and uncertainty about whether we could raise the level required to get it done, those Wharfie Time church bells sounded! The instant activation of the Freo folk on the field and in the stands, turned the stadium into a giant spine-tingling electrical field, signalling caution to the wind be thrown and sparking inherent motivation. We've grown up as a team. We can handle pressure and dish out physicality; we have a great complimenting role balance across the board and seemingly a game awareness at all times. We now possess the ability to change things up and adapt on the run if need be.Case in point - The first half we extended the Hawks exclusive use of the corridor and provided them the equivalent of a police escort. The result of which saw Jack Gunston feast and poor Lukey Ryan and at times Brennan Cox left holding the bag. But there is now a hunger for change when things are going sideways. The identification of the issue and the rapid responsive buy in to collectively protect and guard the Fremantle fairway in the second half, was Hawk chokingly productive. Are we getting our Paddy Voss back? There were signs the passiveness is perishing. The ironically defensive job he delivered on James Sicily cannot be overstated. And what about Michael Frederick! Freddy just Krugered the Hawks, slicing them to bits as he rolled out his career best game. But do we get there without Caleb Serong's second half? Josh Treacys brutal contest winning competitiveness? Or would we all really be enjoying Monday without Luke Jackson's absurd period of mind-blowing dominance and that mother of a smother that had to be seen to be believed?  We're now 8 on the bounce and we've just knocked off a major adversary. While other hopefuls may rear their heads, we've still got the Brisbane box to brand and the Sydney space to swipe, in terms of current contenders. But after Thursday we'll happily meet those subsequent challenges with a pep in our step and a glide in our stride. It felt like Thursday was a pivotal point in our end of season endeavours and we got the answer we were all hoping for. We're in rare territory so we make hay while the purple sun shines. Come for the celebration and stay for the conversation as we relive our handling of the Hawks.Send us Fan MailSupport the show

If that was the trailer for the upcoming ten to twelve season series of Young and Younger, pass me a pen and point out where to sign! Time to Restump Podcast the downing of the ducking dogs. We've seen prolonged purple patches and periods previously suggesting the Hayden hysteria was warranted, but, after Friday night's performance, it's official.  Forget about their work around the ground for a moment because we don't want to suffer a celebratory overdose, but Hayden Young and Murphy Reid's antics in front of the Sean Darcy toothpicks was the height of absurdity!Murphy Reid destroyed the ancient Egyptian sun dials and timekeeping techniques with his scintillating siren snatcher, while Sir Isaac Newton is now questioning everything he thought about physics after Youngy's banana bender from the boundary. However, while their highlights steal the spotlights, Sammy Switkowski deserves a ton of love. His first half work and 2 important goals kept us in the contest. And let's not overlook the magnificent game from Karl Worner who not only defended and marked everything that came his way, but partook in numerous offensive plays. As a team, we seem to be surviving on bursts at the moment, and of course on Boltons, but is it a sustainable 4-point business model? Take nothing away from the thrill and excitement of the victory and the manner in which it was secured, but did we allow it to become a tougher task than it should have been? Let's be fair to the Bulldogs, they were injury ravaged, depleted and the walking wounded. While he probably only needs one of them, Bontempelli was on one leg, Ed Richards was under a cloud all week, Tim English was underdone and, with all due respect, their backline consisted of Coffield, Busslingler, Selwood and a guy called Buku.Again, similar to last week, you can only beat who is in front of you and we are making that a habit, albeit against lesser opposition. But can we continue relying on operating in bursts and letting teams back in? I'm just not sure we can regularly escape suffering bouts of opposition scoreboard assaults in quick time against better credentialed opponents.Last week Carlton kicked 5 goals in 7 minutes against us to almost cause us a disaster. Friday night the Dogs came back half way through the final quarter from 28 points down to get within 5 points. Don't get us wrong, we're loving winning and it is exciting football, but that is unsustainable! We're now 7 and 1 after a third of the season and we've set our year up magnificently. But on some level, we are yet to face a test of the current best. This coming Thursday we'll get answers and a much clearer picture of where we are. However, we probably shouldn't rely on bursts of freakish dominance or leave doors open late against the Hawkers. Anyway, right now it's about just enjoying the moment. So, if you're still reminiscing about Friday, and looking for like-minded Freo folk to join you in calling the ridiculous high tackle free kick count a load of Bullduck, your search is over. More adulation, plenty of nonsense and a sprinkle of balance on the pod.Send us Fan MailSupport the show

He did his best from beyond the field, but the days of Jack Newnes' haunting Freo are done! Time to Restump Podcast the little too close for comfort Carlton clash.Luke Jackson and Shai Bolton went on a ghost busting rampage, ensuring the hint of haunting from the previously problematic Jack Newnes was extinguished. Two finer games from the pair may never have been seen previously. It's difficult what to really make of the Saturday night result. The four points were secured which is obviously the main goal but to be 40 points up in the final quarter and win by 14 against a broken team that was minus 121 points in final quarters this year, is a little unnerving. Was it simply that 'cue in the rack complacency' crept in or something more sinister, sinister beyond the supernatural Newnes nudging? It felt like we kept Carlton just at arm's length for the first three quarters before turning up the heat and stunning them with an absurd period of purple dominance at the start of the fourth. It was a 40 point margin over the Blues in a blink of a Bolton eye as we banished the battle from being in the balance. However, with 7 minutes left on the clock Carlton repaid the punishment of sorts. They scored 6 times in those 7 minutes kicking 5 goals 1 to reduce the final margin to a tick over 2 goals. Were we under siege, unable to undermine the assault? Or had we timed our prevalent purple patch earlier in the period with precision? If it was the latter, it is probably not a practise we should get too familiar with because, while we appear in final four form, a fellow final four outfit may not allow us to finesse so freely! Football is rarely perfect though and the unpredictability is part of the presentation. We know all too well that inexplicable performances occur. So, when a period of perplexity plays out, it's more palatable when you still procure the 4 point prize. We're enjoying the best start to a season since 2022. We've only been six and one after seven games twice, once in 2010 and the aforementioned 2022. We're in good nick, we've pretty much done everything we could have and we've set out season up perfectly. So, why does it feel like we need a proper test? Why does it feel we need to touch the fire to see if we can handle the burn? Is it because 5 of our 7 games so far have been against current bottom 8 teams? You can only beat the opponent in front of you but maybe there's cause to gently lean on the hype brakes. A hapless Eagles two weeks back, a broken and known second half deficient Carlton on the weekend got within a couple of goals of us and we have a shell of a Bulldogs team this week. All you can do is win but do we need to reserve some judgement until we face the likes of Brisbane, Hawthorn or Sydney? They're questions we all don't want to ask or be asked, but they need asking. Thankfully, everyone has an opinion and it's all momentarily subjective. Consequently, there are currently no wrong answers. So, pick up your proton pack and PKE metre, pile in, pitch in and partake in the process of probing the preceding potentially paranormal purple performance on the pod. Send us Fan MailSupport the show

Sometimes they're derbies, sometimes they're simply leg stretching, workload management periods. Time to Restump Podcast what was arguably the most mundane Western Derby in history. Inevitability is the thief of suspense. Has there been less excitement to the build up to a Western Derby? Unsurprisingly the lack of hype and interest for the game met expectations. There was no pulse, not a moment of angst as it all felt a bit soulless. No Optus Stadium fire hydrants need replacing because there wasn't a single spot fire on the day. Derby greats of yesteryear from both teams would be shaking their head in disappointment, bewildered about what the Derbies have become. Is it a sign of the times, where the “It isn't a good look” folk have too much influence? Are the finger wagging purists in charge, frowning upon anyone who colours outside the line? Are the players prioritising earning capacity over the love of the jumper?Or is it simply the West Coast Eagles are so dreadfully uncompetitive, they've sucked all the derby fun out of existence? While the smart money is on the latter, it was still played in far too good a spirit. I simply can't recall ever having these thoughts regarding a derby ever and I have seen every single one. From our purple perspective it was pleasing to see Jye Amiss get on the end of a handful of goals. A day out indeed, but he probably left a couple more out there. Is he back on track? His recent games have shown promise, but we reserve full judgment as you can't assess accurately against that non-existent pressure.Murphy Reid is going the right way to get himself a hard tag each week going forward. If Murph was playing for Freo in the early modern period in the 16th century and delivered the same sorcery he is today, he'd have been burned at the stake! Josh Treacy and Andy Brayshaw both took the opportunity to let the foot off the pedal as their usual hundred miles an hour input just simply wasn't necessary.Jordan Clark was awarded the Rosco Allan medal but… really? We're not talking about or taking any notice of accolades for anything against that abysmal Eagles outfit. To be fair, the West Coast fans should have all gotten medals for sitting through and watching that tripe their team served up!All in all, it was a difficult watch in terms of enthusiasm. However, the overriding positive is we're 5 and 1 after 6 rounds and sitting second behind the Swans on percentage. That's something to get excited about.  Not much more we can say about western derby 62, but whatever can be said, we'll save it and say it on the pod. The last thing a team with the word wood in its name wants to see, is a carpenter in the opposition working on defence! Time to Restump Podcast Lukey Ryan's woodworking masterclass and the hard-fought win over the Woodsmen. It was always only a matter of time, but Lukey Ryan is back to his brilliant best. He's moving fluently, his timing precise, he mopped up everything and got us out of strife on more times than we can recall. His stabilising influence and confidence he provides others add to an already well functioning defence. Quite simply, the apprentice chippie was too good for the woodies! Now that was a win! Don't know about anyone else but we're a bit bemused by the negative commentary surrounding the game from a spectacle standpoint. Despite the constant efforts of commentators to suggest we were struggling; the game was never, not even for a second, not in the balance. Every moment mattered, you were fully engaged and locked in and you couldn't take your eyes of it. Admittedly the conditions and consequent errors didn't help, but there were so many majestic moments amid the madness. Have we become spoilt by dry weather footy? Are we unrealistically captured by the desire for perfection?Yes, he may have won the game for the Pies had he taken his chances… but how many times did we crunch Lachie Schultz? What about the moments of Murphy Reid mesmerism? Luke Jackson's 4 huge grabs in a 5-minute period, Dudley applying chase down pressure, the Johnson goal, the Amiss goal, the Brayshaw lunging tackle and of course the Josh Treacy game saving clunk!I'll be back in 20 minutes, I gotta go watch them all again! Alex Pearce once again showed why the captain's cap fits and it's his for as long as he wants. You'd go as far as to suggest he'd be your first picked player if you were selecting the team. He and Josh Treacy have the ability to meaningfully impact the game without necessarily having ball in hand. Izzy Dudley's rise has been meteoric! He's gone from the sub to the sublime in the blink of an eye. Do we win that game without his contribution? He takes his chances and creates opportunities for others.Given where they have come from, their journeys to get here and that they've had to fight for everything, it is incredible to realise that the tough, combative and courageous Wagner and Worner workhorses are integral parts of the war plans.Gary Lyon and co going after Murphy Reid, chipping him for the occasional mistake, while somehow simultaneously suggesting he is miraculous, was a strange take. He's a kid who performs on-field sorcery, something he can't do if he doesn't attempt it. What is that quote about missing 100% of the shots you don't take?We can't end this parochial Docker diatribe without stopping, folding the arms and nodding in acknowledgement of and appreciation for Luke Jackson. He got the JL message loud and clear at half time and went on a rampage! In the five to six minute period between the end of the 3rd quarter and the beginning of 4th, he managed four big clunking grabs. Add those to his absurd output and you realise he's actually going up levels before our very eyes!We have to get Paddy back up and about. The AFL suits have destroyed his spirit as he now plays well within himself, without the freeing exuberance. He's regressed inward and that is not helping him, the team or us fans. Could the Derby timing be any better? What better way to get your mojo back than unleashing the Pony mayhem in a Western Derby! Anyway, it was too big a win and there is too much more to say and not enough ink to say it all here! Time to Restump Podcast the chaotic conquering of the Crows. It's time for Vossy to let go of the inconsequential opinions of him that are held by others and return to his naturally enthusiastic self. Bring back the organic energetic celebratory shenanigans that inspire teammates and resonate with fans. Remember, the Pony is fine; the spirit makes it shine! We've discussed it often, we've had differing opinions and we've switched viewpoints. However, we've arrived back at a unified position that the Freo Docker captaincy is Alex Pearce's until he says otherwise! We don't win that game without him and I'm not even talking about the smother. It's what he did repeatedly leading up to those last few astonishing acts that ensured we were even a chance to win, something he does all too often. The concern, though, is our prospects rely almost exclusively on his availability. Whatever the case, its Moose's world and he just lets us live in it.The usual suspects performed in their usual manner but it's the growth in the likes of Matty Johnson, Neil Erasmus and Karl Worner that has raised the team's floor. Are Jye Amiss and Sean Darcy taking positive strides? Jye showing some of his yesteryear energy and four goals and Darcy seemingly moving a lot more freely and looking substantially more confident and carefree. While a wonderful win it was to secure, and one that may have slipped through our fingers in years gone by, are the dramatic heroics of the final moments covering up some issues? We had a run of 7 goals kicked against us and we kicked just 3 goals in the 2nd half. We've played 2 relevant or significant teams this year, Geelong and Adelaide, and we've kicked just 3 goals in each of the 2nd halves. Concerns or too small a sample size?We move on quick to Gather Round but there is always time to stop and smell the purple victory roses. Drafted from Claremont in the WAFL, Phil was selected by Melbourne with pick 19 in the 1991 AFL Draft and played predominantly as a defender. He spent three seasons with the Demons, playing 25 games before making the move west to Fremantle.Phil is perhaps best remembered as the player traded by Melbourne to Fremantle in exchange for a draft pick in 1994, which was later used to recruit a 17-year-old Jeff Farmer. He was also part of history, lining up as one of the original players in the Fremantle Dockers' first ever AFL game against Richmond. Phil went on to spend two seasons with the Dockers, adding a further 14 games to his AFL career. In this episode, Phil talks about his time at the Dees and playing under Neil Balme, the early days of the Fremantle Dockers, and some of his most memorable moments at the club. He also reflects on his time as part of the coaching staff at the Peel Thunder, including the famous moment when coach Garry Hocking instructed all players to start behind the ball at a center bounce.A great listen with the 120th member of 'The 90's Club Footy Podcast'.

Did we really destroy the Tigers or did we just turn up when they understandably couldn't? In any case Josh Treacy put on a marking exhibition, catching everything. He'd catch a shadow in the dark! Time to Restump Podcast the toppling of the Tiges. That was some display from Josh Treacy. The one grab marking in less-than-ideal conditions often against more than one opponent was unrealistically clinical. If I was an opponent, I'd be calling for an investigation into the possible use of Velcro or superglue! The Tigers came out roaring, throwing everything they had at us in the first half to make it a hard-fought game until that point. However, while they did have some experience out there, you can't be minus your spine, play ten youngsters and perform for four quarters. Tom Lynch up forward, Toby Nankervis in the ruck and Nathan Broad down back would make any side infinitely better. However, we're not here to make excuses for opponents. Our wayward kicking saved the Tigers from a 150-point belting! 35 shots on goal to 13 and we kicked just 7 goals more than them. We had 12 players hit the scoreboard and almost no one was immune from the inaccurate disease. Oddly enough Caleb Serong, who goes at a tick over 45% career goal accuracy, was our most accurate with 2 goals 1. Only Serong and Treacy ended up on thee right side of the ledger.Luke Jackson had a wonderful game but even his usually reliable radar was off kicking 1 goal 4. The subdued Paddy Voss 1 goal 3, Switta 2 behinds and, while it was great to see him get amongst it, Jye Amiss hit 2 goals 3. It's difficult to contemplate that Shai Bolton may have just played his best game for the club without numerous goals involved. His mid work and forward of centre was a sight to behold and seeing the beaming smile on his face in play, we weren't the only ones happy with his work!Did we see some vast improvement in Sean Darcy the longer the game went on? He played under half of the first half but clicked over to 53.5% in the second half. Admittedly against non-existent ruckmen he should have shown something, but his confidence seemed to grow the more he got involved. But the question remains, does Darcy's reemergence lessen Jackson's output? To be honest the entire game and result was the formality it should have been. There was a fair bit of ‘going through the motions' but you still have to get it done. We turned up, weathered the storm in more ways than one, endured whatever Richmond could muster and then put them to the sword for a more than comfortable victory. We bank the four valuable points and we look to the next fortnight in South Australia. However, it's a sin not to celebrate a Freo win. So, bring your party paraphernalia to the parade and as we peel back the panels and probe the performances of the purple players on the pod.Send us Fan MailSupport the show

Is there enough Dudley to go around? Everyone wants to see more Dudley! Time to Restump Podcast Dudley's disorienting of the Dees. He's given us snippets before, thrilled us with his momentary glimpses, he has teased us, leaving us wanting so much more. Saturday night he gave us the extended version, the full feature-length Dudley film.15 quality touches, 4 tackles, 7 score involvements and 3 goals 1. Personal best numbers every which way you look! What a difference another year of hard work and a second preseason makes. After averaging just under 60% time on ground in 2025, he punched out 80% on Saturday night. You couldn't take your eyes off Izzy, but the background is no place for the Paddy as he put on a pony show of his own. Admittedly it was more of a circus, but didn't we all ‘roll up, roll up!'Typically, though, the AFL stooges, who are blatantly showing us they couldn't run a tap, decided for everyone, Vossy's antics weren't a good look and instantly plucked a fine out of thin air to crush his spirit. We're now truly entrenched in an era in which the eternally offended, self-serving finger waggers hand out fines for mean words and gestures. Rest in peace mental resilience. If the end game is the sterilisation of the entire industry and the eradication of entertaining character and personality, it'd be the only area in which Andrew Dillon and his cronies are succeeding.Just as you wonder where Melbourne would be without Max Gawn, I fear Freo's whereabouts without Alex Pearce. His performance on Saturday was so much more impactful than his 5 touches suggest. However, it was the defensive collective again with special mention to Karl Worner whose stocks continue to rise. And having Luke Ryan seamlessly slot back in was comforting and stress alleviating. Shae Bolton was off the scale in easily his best game in purple, 10 clunking marks from the thundering Treacy train was a night out and Murphy Reid with his 25 and 2 goals… it's getting a bit monotonous! But can we just stop for a moment to marvel at the performance of the debutant and pay credit once again to Wallsy and co? Have we found our small high half forward in the form of Chris Scerri? The speed on that guy! The game was in danger of getting called off for lighting! He's been on the list five minutes, he leapfrogs higher profile draftees, lands a debut, picks up 20 touches and has Gout Gout watching on saying, “who the f@#k is that guy?” You've done it again, Wallsy!Overall, it was a good win and all you can do is win. We do have a few concerns with Jye's form and the long-term prospects of Oscar McDonald down back and across the board it wasn't quite a four-quarter level of performance where I think we'd like to be. But thankfully there is fair bit of polish still in the tin as it needs applying. We've opened the win account, squared the points ledger and gotten the season up and rolling. While some people believe things are better off unsaid, we are not those people. We've always said, too much being said is never said enough. Nuff said, in more ways than one! Frankie Valli and his four seasons is no match for Chris Scerri Scerri Baby and his first season, and you can't change our minds! Time to Restump Podcast the imminent making of amends for round one as we take on the new look Melbourne Dees in round two. What a great result for Chris Scerri and his family to nail down a debut only moments after landing a contract at Freo. The odds of making it through the supplemental selection period and getting onto a list aren't high, so you really need to show plenty to achieve it. He's obviously done exactly that and more to land not only the contract but a debut before his higher profile draftee colleagues who occupy the same position. While we're celebrating Scerri's inclusion, we go in unfortunately with the forced change having lost Hayden Young to hamstring concerns. Youngy pulled up with some soreness and a minor tear, but who knows, according to Caroline Wilson, he may just be whinging. Is there a chance of a late change? After just 44% game time last week and training away from the group in the later part of the week, could we see another purple debut in the form of Mason Cox? Despite the help from Jackson he'll receive, do we really want to go in with an underdone Darcy against Max Gawn? The Dees look a new and freer outfit. Aided by former Saints stalwart Jack Steele, they moved the ball through the likes of Harvey Langford and Caleb Windsor with speed and purpose against the Saints and capped off their work well in front of goal. Jacob Van Rooyan and the dual panels on the Picket fence up forward looked scary and the addition of Brody Mihocek has been a good one. The club is certainly not the 2026 struggler we all thought it may be after losing Petracca, Oliver, May and McVee. We got a taste of what we're capable of last week in the first quarter against Geelong. However, we also got more than a taste of what we're capable of in the following three quarters! So, if we serve up a repeat performance of that first quarter effort and extend it for a further quarter or two, we will see our first four points. With the conditioning run under our belts and the home ground advantage, we're Looking forward to what should be an entertaining contest. So, as a quick game is apparently a good game, suit up, make a list of your whinges and join us for a short 30-minute preview of the must win encounter.Send us Fan MailSupport the show

It's a unique game this Aussie rules caper. Almost as unique as the AFL's caveat clad, ironic equality and inclusivity policy. Maybe next year we can play round one in Mumbai! Time to Restump Podcast the air gasping gut punch against Geelong. We've got mixed emotions about what unfolded on Saturday. There is no guarantee the situation with opening round dictated the result, but it was too conspicuous to not have had a substantial impact. However, result aside, reduce the possible advantage or disadvantage by simply abolishing the nonsensical round zero. After starting in sensational fashion, the Cats ate into some of our lead in the second term. But we had to expect it; I mean its Geelong we were up against… it's not as if it was West Coast! But midway through the third quarter we hit the brick wall and there was no second wind. We stumbled onto the treadmills where we remained, unable to stop the combat-ready conditioned Cats from catching us. While the result was disappointing, what we delivered in the first quarter was the scintillating silver lining and the positive to take out of the day. Put some match fitness behind it and we should be in for a more than handy year. However, we didn't necessarily do ourselves any favours as we likely compounded the opening round conditioning issues through selection. Knowing the challenges, you must ponder why we'd go in with an obviously underdone Sean Darcy and an Alex Pearce with a question mark where his halo usually is. Sean Darcy managed just 44% game time. Only three other players over the round, played less than 50% game time without injury reasoning. We're not into consolation prizes but the loss wasn't defining or season trend setting. It has that familiar feel of the ‘one that got away,' yet it is far from a round one loss that has us saying, ”Oh here we go again.” There were contributing factors beyond our control, but we probably didn't take care of the factors that were within it, and there lie the disappointment and frustration.   2025 round one and 2026 round one, while both resulted in losses to the same team at the same venue, that is where the similarities end. On a post-match perspective and what it potentially means going forward, they couldn't be further apart. How deep we can we dig into this game? How deep does this game need digging into? We don't know! But put on your archaeological wide brimmed field hat, bundle up your trowel, shovel and brush and join us as we see what nuggets of nonsense we can unearth on the pod. Send a textSupport the show

Is the overlooking of the workhorse, the defensive stalwart, the ten-year warrior, Lukey Ryan, unconcerning, or has it evolved into intrigue? Are we pretending the elephant in the room is a big purple lamp? Time to Restump Podcast the curious case of the custodian and the clash against the Cats!Despite his recent performances in the WAFL preseason and his own assurances that he's good to go, the longtime walk-up-start has been passed over. We have to take Justin Longmuir and his reasoning on face value that Luke Ryan has somehow dropped a peg in the pecking order, but with the Cats possessing a tricky and versatile forward line, wouldn't we sleep a little easier knowing the chippie was chiming in? The first game of the season is upon us, and those familiar feelings have returned. There's an ounce of anticipation, a hint of trepidation, a tablespoon of fear and a boat load of excitement filling the pot of the emotional simmering stew.  We're heading down to the Cattery, otherwise known as the field of fictitious finger fractures, to right the round one wrongs of twelve months ago. Have we learned from the mistakes everyone in the team, except Murphy Reid, made that day? After no word or contact, we sent out a search party during the preseason to find the Disco. We just needed some proof of life but there wasn't a blip on the radar and the silence was deafening. However, Nathan O'Driscoll must have been hiding in plain sight, because round one comes along and ‘hey presto,' he's back! He stuck his noggin up and got the nod. It proves Disco never dies; when it's not centre stage, it's existing in the background ready to reemerge. With O'Driscoll, Sean Darcy and Switta returning, joining Hayden Young and Brandon Wallker, it feels like the members of the band, the Red Hot Injury Peppers, have reunited. We welcome Wagner and Worner back, we have Judd McVee in for his first official game in purple for premiership points and we're always glad to see Alex Pearce, with or without his whiteboard. Not going to lie though, while Oscar MacDonald will fill the void to some degree, without Brennan Cox and Luke Ryan's reliability, it feels we may be a little vulnerable in the last line of defense. However, we go in full of faith our favoured forces will formidably fight the feline fraternity. While Fictitious Finger Fracture Field is quite the home ground advantage where few away teams fare well, it holds no fear for us knowing we've won five of our last ten appearances there. It's time to parcel it up, put it all together and ponder the plight of our purple platoon on the preview pod. It's time to remove the unnecessary risks. Bubble wrap him up, put him in cotton wool and cryogenically freeze him for a week and a half if we must! Time to Restump Podcast the purple proceedings at the Cockburn quarry. What can we really take out of the practise match against the Adelaide Crows last Saturday other than cases of third-degree windburn? It was above the 2025 vanilla-ish preseason performance, but it understandably contained some going-through-the-motions as well. A solid conditioner? We're on countdown to round one and all eyes and focus are on the health of the Freo fleet, especially the defensive unit. While Luke Ryan may need a shoulder holder and a few more miles in the aging legs, we're on cattle watch with Coxy and the Captain as they deal with their calves. The midfield depth is something to behold. Hayden Young has been placed into protective custody and they're fine-tuning Jackson's juggling act. With Murphy Reid's seemingly absurd growth, has Matty Johnson and Neil Erasmus been cut in front of in the queue to more midfield minutes? Is everything Kool and the Gang with the Disco? No O'Driscoll mentions, whispers or even grapevine chatter! Do we need to organise a search party? How's he trekking… anyone, anyone… Bueller?Mason Cox hasn't put a foot wrong since arriving at the club apparently and he was good against Lachlan McAndrew last Saturday, which somehow sparked potential best 23 conversations. He's a great pick up for us for specific reasons, but has the preseason distorted his perceived valuation? He's 35 years of age and he spent 10 years at Collingwood averaging 14 games a season. He can tap, he can yap, he can fill a gap and wears a premiership cap! He's the ideal insurance policy and a very good get considering the uncertainty cloud over Sean Darcy, but surely, we're not entertaining the prospect of trying to teach an old American dog new tricks? Jojo is going all out campaigning to have ACDC's TNT reinstated as the post goal celebratory song, but could we go one better and install Body Count's, “There Goes The Neighbourhood.” Speaking of Neighbourhoods, after whatever that display was on Sunday, the West Cost Eagles and their fans are in Liquorice All Sorts of grief! And when that is the case, we show concern and compassion, reach across the aisle and try to pick them up with a supportive Neighbourhood Watch episode. It's only a week and a half until we get underway in round one. Not going to lie, it's a little concerning that the frequency of taking a nervous wiz has increased already! There is more pressure this year and the expectations are understandably off the chart. Rightly or wrongly, it feels such a consequential season. It is often said the best way to deal with stress is to talk it out through incessant nonsensical rambling! Nothing wrong with exploring, experimenting and pinch hitting, but highest and best use is always the most productive policy. Time to Restump Podcast all the latest goings on at Cockburn central.Other than getting some miles in the legs, a preseason blowout and learning the Freo Dockers don't believe in open borders, there wasn't too much to take away from the kick to kick at Victor Kalis Saturday morning. However, there was a conspicuous emphasis on using the Cockburn corridor. The instruction obviously was to move it down the middle at all costs, something you imagine we're attempting to take into the season proper, albeit with a bit more selectiveness and caution. Was the state of origin as exciting a prospect as we're seemingly made or told to believe? It was a good spectacle but from a meaningful and emotional investment perspective, it felt more in the range of well below a home and away game and marginally above an exhibition match. Are we really pushing on with the intention of having Luke Jackson play substantial midfield minutes? Surely his highest and best use supersedes the experiments? And as we're not discarding another Darcy dash to Doha, Jackson's ruck fate may well be sealed. Luke Ryan seems to be a little off the pace at the moment which is a tad concerning, especially as the responsibility for our success this year feels like it relies on the fitness of him, Alex Pearce and Brennan Cox. Oscar aside, the lack of tall defender depth does make us a little nervous.  But all fit and available, do we have the cattle this year to go all the way? Or are we a Chad Warner away from as finished a product as you can be? Jojo has welcomed a few listeners to his Mount Hawthorn bar which he describes as a “relaxed, light driven, open atmosphere” so we'll get an update there. But on more important matters the Chief wants a ruling from the self-appointed booing gatekeeper, Gerard Whatley, regarding Lachie Neale. We're getting close to the siren to start the season! Its that time of year where the nerves are starting to creep in, they're duelling with the excitement that is building all while trying to stave off cautious optimism. It's the annual mixed emotional melting pot!All that in deeper discussion and a shedload more unenlightening nonsense that could well prove detrimental to your cognitive well-being. If at first you don't succeed, pivot, and destroy all the existing evidence of your attempt. We landed a tad wide of the Strategic Plan mark but it was a learning experience. We learnt not to set the bar so unrealistically high! Time to get 2026 underway and Restump Podcast the views and news in purple shoes. The Strategic Plan is out and the 2030 Game Plan is in. We've rewired, replumbed, reset and restumped largely with all the same elements in the same positions. Is that a lack of accountability or an admission the bar was just mistakenly and unnecessarily set too high? Either way you don't disrupt positive trajectory. There has been plenty of talk about Mason Cox since his arrival. He is a handy addition but do we really believe he will be in the regular fully fit starting line up? Do we really expect anything beyond the insurance policy from the near on 35-year-old? Did we miss an opportunity to hand the captaincy baton over to Andy Brayshaw or Caleb Serong? Alex Pearce will do the job but with the end of the ‘strategic plan' era and moving into this ‘2030 Game Plan' period, maybe a fresh captaincy start might have been in order? Again, though is it a case of not disrupting positive trajectory? We'll take a look at the recruits and reluctantly touch on the Lachie Neale saga in relation to Freo. Are we revved up for state of origin or are we just praying for our players to get through unscathed? First pod of the year and unfortunately the Chief is already indulging in hysterical outrage, ranting about some inconsequential nonsense. And with his new thirst-quenching establishment now up and running, we'll get the update from Barman Jojo about what's doing there. It's been a while between our purple passionfruit podcast drinks but the pre-season is just starting to gather some pace. So, why not go over the off-season developments, look at the foreseeable freo forecast and add some unnecessary purple noise pollution to the mix. We've given everyone's ears a well-earned and extended rest to recover, but sadly all good things come to an end. We apologise for the subsiding of the serenity of silence, but we're resurrecting the ridiculous rigmarole. For those whose listening standards are lower than our premiership count, by all means, join us for another year, starting now.Send us a textSupport the show

The Sandgroper roper. He's a rustler! Wrangler Wallsy and co are out there on their annual muster, lassoing and herding prized young West Aussies back to the Fremantle farm. Time to Restump Podcast the trade parade. The seemingly very focused Freo strategy of enticing quality age profile applicable young west Australians who fill or add to positions of need, continues. So far, we've seen off Liam Reidy and we welcomed home ex-East Fremantle product, Judd McVee, to the Freo family.Under the clever guise of being neighbourly, Wallsy and co orchestrated a position that saw Judd McVee head to Fremantle, essentially for a very fair price, and potentially substantial unders. It unlocked the block that allowed West Coast to get their mature aged defender, Brandon Starcevich. We gave up picks 12, 33, 44 and 50 and received Judd McVee, pick 19, 23 and 46. Liam Reidy has made his way to Carlton with pick 53 and 71 while picks 50 and 68 returned. Nothing to write home about but what more could we realistically expect? You don't have to win every trade. Trade period isn't over yet but you'd imagine there wouldn't be too much more action from a purple perspective, other than Will Brodie heading to Port Adelaide to team up with Josh Carr. But who knows what unfolds in the frantic few moments before the final bell?Has the free agency compensation system gone past the point of repair? The manipulation and exploiting of the seemingly fluid rules, the lack of transparency around decisions made and compensatory awards handed down, suggest it's time to either scrap it altogether or blow it up and rebuild it in a more appropriate manner. Jojo has been banging on about it for years and now it surely seems he'll get his wish. The Chief is still running his one-man campaign to sound out Geelong's Ted Chlohesy. With Switta's often unreliable availability, could Ted be the perfect candidate to mitigate that risk and fill our post-Schultzy forward pressure deficiency? However, we're already in the workshop building the wagon to carry the picks, points and punters for the Chadwick28 Restump campaign ready to roll out next year! As always, we somehow come up with plenty of propaganda to prattle on about. So, as we always say, if you're not pickled or plastered and passed out on purple, your performance isn't presentable. If you haven't overdosed, you're not doing it right.  Parting ways with our popular purple people is particularly painful this year. 674 games of experience and 3 meaningful contributors. Time to Restump Podcast all the Docker developments.Any of us may momentarily win an aging process battle, but none of us win the war. While Jimmy Aish would have it in him to go around again, Nat Fyfe and Sonny Walters were formidable in their individual efforts to prolong the inevitable. But it does little to ease the pain of having to say goodbye. However, the cycle of purple life continues and the Freo show must go on. They're certainly not the first three we've had to watch disappear into the horizon and they won't be the last. This fast paced, often ruthless industry doesn't allow for long periods of mourning or reflection. The season's dust is barely settled, the send offs seemed shortened and we suddenly find ourselves in Brownlow medal, draft and trade talk territory. Almost in an instant the conversation switches from ‘who we're losing' to ‘who will take their place.' On some level it feels a little disrespectful, like we've moved on too soon. But such is the nature of the AFL beast. Were Andy Brayshaw and Caleb Serong's dominance of Fremantle's Brownlow votes a true reflection of our group's individual contributions, or was it simply a product of the ‘midfielders' award? Both had very good seasons, but you're trying to tell me the All-Australian jacket wearing Jordan Clark had just a 2-game polling, 4 vote total season? Really? In terms of personnel going forward, what do we need to compliment the list to take another step forward in 2026?With Will Brody and Liam Reidy requesting trades, Quinton Narkle joining the retirees and the unlucky Jack Delean and Odin Jones suffering delisting, it has opened up a substantial 8 list spots so far.The grapevine chatter regarding the possible departure of Sean Darcy just won't quieten down. Is it a case of where there's smoke there's fire or is it all smoke and fiery mirrors? What do the rumours do to Liam Reidy's thought process?33-year-old Collingwood forward Jamie Elliott's name keeps popping up in purple provinces. And while we're on the Collingwood camp, there seems to be a Bobby Hill Freo Fanclub? Regardless of 'get-ability' are they genuine needs? Those names and plenty more are, at the very least, up for discussion. Always plenty of Docker drivel to be discussed. We'll cast the net wide on all things Freo, we'll get an update on JoJo's long-awaited bar opening and the Chief has hinted that he may unfortunately subject us to another episode of the Neighbourhood Watch. With the ink running dry here, let's put down the purple pen, pick up the talking stick and continue on the pod. So, if you haven't got a sock drawer to tidy, grass to watch grow or purple paint to watch dry, by all means, join us and get involved in the conversation. Send us a textSupport the show

Do we all need to go guts up in the Bahamas for a while? To be fair to the Gold Coast Suns, if we'd gotten out of jail we would've been charged with stealing. Time to Restump Podcast the 1-point heartbreak.Well that stung and it may have done irreparable damage to our souls. While Freo fans didn't buy into The West's revenue generating clickbait idiocy with their ‘easy Freo final' back page, we all obviously had high hopes of extending the season. However, we got Sunburnt so we bow out of season 2025 with a what would've been, could've been, maybe should've been but didn't quite end up being, result. It was a typical Freo roller coaster season ride as we went from eating the chocolates in the frying pan, to sucking on boiled lollies in the fire. We were a basket case by round 8, finals bound a few games later. We've done the full suite of emotions since Saturday night, but after the mental anguish, pondering the reasons why and the reasons why not, and internally asking ourselves the irrationally instinctive rhetorical questions like, how did this happen, who do we need and who needs to go… we arrive at some sort of pragmatic peace. The basic long and simple short of it is, the Suns were simply better for longer. Now obviously, the superiority for a single point margin time period is all but negligible. But the soul-destroying reality is, that's all that is required.Really other than sporadic poor decision making, some maybe finals frenzied forced skill errors and several less than ideal forward 50 entries, we didn't do too much wrong and the team will benefit from the experience. If you had to pinpoint it without hanging individuals, we'd probably note the 2nd quarter with 5 minutes remaining on the clock. In that period of red time rampage, the Suns managed 6 inside 50s and put 4 goals 1 on the board, while our Freo folk failed to trouble the scorers from 4 inside 50s. Must be said though, generating just 7 scores from 29 inside 50s for a half, tells you you're doing plenty right, but the important part catastrophically wrong. We couldn't get it done for Fyfey and now any on field remnants of the 2013 grand final era are gone. However, we let Nat go gradually which helped ease the pain of goodbye. And while we couldn't get it done for Fyfe, if you can distance yourself from the pain of Saturday night and view it with momentary detachment, it's hard not to have a little smile for the Gold Coast Suns and David Swallow. We know far too well what they have been through and for them to have their first ever draftee kick the winning score in his and his team's first ever final, in what is his retirement year, it's a great story and a wonderful football moment.Ok, enough of that nonsense. So, putting the purple hat back on, we've just put away a 16 win season, we've got one of the league's youngest and most inexperienced lists that's just experienced a final. We've got a collective with a non-traditional professional Fremantle mindset, we've got the right guy in charge and we're on a trend heading in a north east direction. We haven't even cracked the window yet! We're only warming up!We're a bit light on for detail and analysis here so we'll dig much deeper on the pod and relive and re-visit those irrational instinctive questions. So, if you're struggling to come to terms with the result and managing the fall out is too heavy a burden, well many ears make light listening, so come in for the conversation. We'll talk through the temporary trauma, absolve the anguish, make some mental mending milestones and procure the pragmatic perspective ready to purple back up and go again in about 6 months' time.Send us a textSupport the show

It's been a while between purple pints. But you get the feeling we're going to be well hydrated over the next decade. Time to Restump preview podcast the start of our September quest.Does this September participation feeling ever diminish? Or has the drought and the heartbreak of often orchestrating our own demise over the journey created this exhilaration? Not sure, but something tells me given our history, we'll never take the sight of September for granted. It's time to put away the pitchforks and remove the hands from the holsters of those who were gunning for the club and coach. We haven't found ourselves in finals facilitated by favourable results falling around us. We forced our way in winning 12 of our last 14, many against fierce foes. And when it came down to the final affair, the do or die clash against the dogs, we were formidably emphatic. So, where does it position us? Past results now count for nothing and have no bearing on what is to come.We rightly go in Saturday night as favourites, but if we have any hint of forgone conclusionary mindsets, the Suns will seize on it.While there's a dash of relief making finals, the pressure on Saturday night is all on us. The Suns are September debutants, so they'd have a weight-off-the-shoulders feeling and an element of freedom about them, which can be a positive or a negative. Reaching finals for the first time, they may feel the job is done and subconsciously play accordingly. But they may also have that dangerous now 'nothing to lose' mentality and play unrestrained with reckless abandon. However, lets not forget they have a 3-time premiership ‘been there done that' coach at the helm. Damien Hardwick won't have the satisfied mindset and he'll pull all the psychological levers to ensure his players don't either.Apart from the obvious, both teams have additional reasons to perform. For us, while it is his final appearance in WA, this could be the final time Nat Fyfe, the generational player, who won himself and us two Brownlow medals, who regularly carried out club through some dark times, graces us with his on-field presence if we lose. And for Gold Coast, their club's first ever draftee and co-captain, David Swallow, has called time on his career and goes out in his and the Sun's debut finals campaign. Both players could have abandoned their perennially unsuccessful clubs at times and there were no shortage of options. But they dug in and showed a rare loyalty at the expense of potential premiership expense, until now. Interestingly, Nat Fyfe and David Swallow both are West Aussies, one club career players and both currently sit on 247 games, providing a chance to play a deserved 250.There are a host of heartstring tugging motivations for both sides regarding these two magnificent players to draw upon, should added inspiration be required. While we should just concentrate on the now, if we were to pull off the unthinkable, every game from here is an elimination final. And should we get to and plant our purple flag on the promised land, taking into account our elimination final against the Dogs, we'd be the first club in history to win the premiership with 5 elimination finals! We've been set up well by the club, the coaching staff and recruiters. They've created the framework for success and now the opportunity is there for the players. Home and away and finals footy are two different bags, so are we ready as a group? Is the 'why not us' cliché fitting? Maybe, maybe not, but Saturday night is the first step to finding out. There's still 48 hours or so until bouncedown! It's often said “A wrong King still believes his crown makes him right.” Give it up Kingy, there's no place left to hide. JL has got your number! Time to Restump Podcast Freo's magnificent September securing victory against the dauntless Dogs. There was barely an institution that didn't write us off. The media, the footballing world, the bookies and my postman gave us no hope. But why? Why was so much analytical weight and judgment placed upon the loss to the Brisbane Lions a week bacl? Was our previous 3 months invisible? Did the pundits not even bother to watch the Fox Footy mini's?Justin Longmuir got on the front foot though as he was having none of it and he wasn't shy in letting them know. However, let's hope they all double down and write us off again in 2 weeks' time.   In real time, we'd all be lying if we said we didn't harbour some minor concerns half way through that first quarter. But we'd seen that movie before several times in recent months and, more often than not, it had a favourable twist. Stop, take your hat off and give the defensive collective an acknowledging nod because we were able to build that win on it's ability and relentless efforts to weather the Dog's high pressure, 19 inside fifty storm. It kept us in the game when others couldn't. The individuals were remarkable. No one does what our defensive delegation did to Sam Darcy!Depending on how you view it, its either worrying or pleasing seeing Andy Brayshaw and Caleb Serong combine for just a 5 possession first quarter. Worrying because they got destroyed, but pleasing because we were still able to win centre clearance for the quarter and set up four scoring chances. Hayden Young, take a bow!The Dogs did well at trying to rattle our cages early with their pressure but we dealt with it, we regrouped at quarter time and then we let go with a scintillating period of footy that saw us put an uninterrupted run of 8 goals on the board.Sure, the Dogs have some defensive deficiencies but our forwards were phenomenal, showing no mercy in exploiting the advantage. Everyone got their unhygienic lick of the what would now be germ riddled ice-cream. But even contracting covid was an acceptable risk if it meant seeing Jye Amiss in the embryonic stage of a return to some serious form!If you put your hat back on, can you please remove it once more as we have a moment of respect and marvel at Murphy Reid yet again? Everything he touches turns to gold… or rather goal. It's not too often that a first-year player becomes irreplaceable and a vital cog in the team wheel. It's done, pull your dress down Mary, the shows over. All bets are off…  just give him the rising star medal! And while our hata are still off, give a nod of appreciation to Bailey Banfield who has reinvented himself in a meaningful way. While we appeared to be cruising to victory, the Dogs are too good a team to not mount a comeback. On the back of the magnificent Marcus Bontempelli, he dragged them back to somewhat within striking distance late in the final term. Yes, Ok, a nerve or two crept in, but we're not that same old Fremantle team anymore. We weren't letting this September securing victory slip through our fingers. Bring on September! We didn't put too much weight on last week's loss to the Brisbane Lions and their win over the Hawks justified our position. So, likewise, given the Dog's record against top eight teams, we're not getting carried away with the win over them either. Having said that, it doesn't mean we're not bouncing off the walls excited about being part of September this year! So, you know what to do. We pick up the bits and pieces that are recognisable and look to the Dogs. Time to Restump Podcast the life leveller the Lions landed on us, which wasn't as horrific as the picture suggests.Probably unpopular opinion but that performance wasn't as, pun intended, catastrophic as the outrage infers. In context of the play, it's possible to be in the game but not on the scoreboard, and for much of the 80+ minutes we were. Quite simply you can't kick 8 points straight, not kick a goal until the 2nd term and, despite our recent efforts, expect to run teams down, especially of the Lion's ilk.We can rant and rave and question how did we not perform to a necessary level in what was largely a make-or-break game. But the Lions, the 2 two consecutive grand finalists and reigning premiers, were in the same season on the line boat. Were we overawed early? Could we not adapt to the Lion's well researched and executed strategy? Yes, to some degree on both accounts. But we overcame it and produced enough chances to be on par at quarter time. The shots on goal and the forward attacks we butchered were both of our own doing and the Lion's pressure.Albeit with some costly blemishes, our defensive unit again stood up under adversity to keep us within reach at quarter time. They dealt with a 47-to-16-mark deficit resulting in a 15 to 7 inside 50 count for the Lions. The game would've been over had it not been for the defensive crew.We adjusted and equalised the game in the 2nd term. While we still went -20 marks, we'd settled and secured the corridor and cut off their supply to go in 8 points down at the half. However, the Lions didn't fluke the 2024 premiership. Their 16 finals, 4 preliminary finals and 2 grand finals weren't luck. They're an extremely tough and talented backs to the wall side and they were able to draw on that monstrous body of big game experience to rise to another level we simply don't have in us as yet. It isn't the standalone game to judge individuals on, but Luke Jackson was off and nowhere near his recent influential best. Alex Pearce had a mare, or rather too many marish moments, Freddy needs his radar realigned this week and Josh Treacy must learn to pull up and not play on after marking in a goal square. Is Andy Brayshaw carrying something significant injury-wise? His recent output hasn't been at AB level. What about the Disco? Saturday continued a lean trend for him. And where are we all sitting on Jye Amiss? 5 touches last week, 3 on the weekend. He was handy prior to that though. We've won 11 of our last 13, we've beaten some serious sides from behind on numerous occasions. It's an exceptional string of performances, but did those games include the best there is? I'd suggest not and that means we're a very good side, but we're not yet in the top echelon. We're making gigantic inroads, but we're not invincible. Our recent wins have predominantly been built on accurate kicking. 15 goals 4 against Carlton, 12 goals 5 against Hawthorn and 12 goals 7 against the Pies. Almost identical scoring shots against Brisbane, 5 goals 14, and we lose by 57 points.Personally, it's is somewhat of an understandable performance and one which doesn't really say a great deal other than that we were put to the sword by a very good flag favoured side. For that reason, it shouldn't impact our confidence levels going up against the Dogs, a high scoring side with defensive deficiencies.Anyway, more discussion needed so, let's pick it up on the pod. However, if you're a candidate for misery needing company or if its purple pessimism you're looking for, you couldn't be further from the right place.
