This week’s Alpha Trader podcast features hosts Aaron Task and Stephen Alpher speaking with Jack Schwager about the latest book in his Market Wizards series, Unknown Market Wizards - The Best Traders You’ve Never Heard Of. Prior to the chat with Schwager, the hosts discuss some of the busy news flow as we begin the last full trading week of a long 2020. Among the subjects: The beginning of vaccine distribution in the U.S. as Covid-19 cases (and shutdowns) shoot higher, the continued lack of any stimulus bill out of Washington, the red-hot IPO market, the remarkable comeback in Disney (DIS). And of that IPO market, Task checked in with occasional Alpha Trader guest Eddy Elfenbein, who says the animal spirits are making him bullish. He notes that a key difference between this year’s IPO gold rush and that of 1999 is that 2020’s batch of newcomers are mature companies with real revenue and even (on occasion) real profits. In 1999, metrics like price-to-sales fell out of flavor to be replaced with things like price-per-click. Beginning with the publishing of Market Wizards in 1989 and continuing with the new Unknown Market Wizards, Jack Schwager has been taking financial markets junkies inside the minds of some of the most successful traders to ever roam the pits in Chicago, the trading floors in New York and London, the halls of powerful hedge funds, and (today) likely nothing more than a WiFi-connected computer from pretty much anywhere on the planet. Maybe the most important common trait running through each of Schwager’s books: A deep respect for risk management to the point where most of the traders believe managing the downside is more important than their actual trading methodology. Though markets have changed dramatically over the thirty years, what’s necessary for success in trading really hasn’t, he notes. Speaking of dramatic change, Schwager spends some time discussing one of the subjects of Unknown Market Wizards. Using “neither fundamental nor technical analysis,” Chris Camillo has turned a modest stake into millions of dollars. How so? By creative use of social media, Camillo has been able to spot “anomalies” in which stock price action isn’t reflective of the trends he’s seeing. By stepping into some of these situations, Camillo has been able to turn great profits. There’s plenty more, including more common traits across great traders, Schwager’s own evolving trading style, and his involvement with FundSeeder, a platform for finding and providing funding for top trading talent. Today on my show one of my most popular guests… Jack Schwager returns. The Market Wizards are back! Unknown Market Wizards continues in the three-decade tradition of the hugely popular Market Wizards series, interviewing exceptionally successful traders to learn how they achieved their extraordinary performance results. The twist in Unknown Market Wizards is that the featured traders are individuals trading their own accounts. They are unknown to the investment world. Despite their anonymity, these traders have achieved performance records that rival, if not surpass, the best professional managers. Some of the stories include: – A trader who turned an initial account of $2,500 into $50 million. – A trader who achieved an average annual return of 337% over a 13-year period. – A trader who made tens of millions using a unique approach that employed neither fundamental nor technical analysis. – A former advertising executive who used classical chart analysis to achieve a 58% average annual return over a 27-year trading span. – A promising junior tennis player in the UK who abandoned his quest for a professional sporting career for trading and generated a nine-year track record with an average annual return just under 300%. World-renowned author and trading expert Jack D. Schwager is our guide. His trademark knowledgeable and sensitive interview style encourages the Wizards to reveal the fascinating details of their training, experience, tactics, strategies, and their best and worst trades. There are dashes of humour and revelations about the human side of trading throughout. The result is a engrossing new collection of trading wisdom, brimming with insights that can help all traders improve their outcomes. Bio: Jack D. Schwager is a recognized industry expert on futures and hedge funds, and the author of the iconic Market Wizards series in which he interviewed many of the trading legends of our time. This is the podcast interview we have been waiting to do all year. We have been huge fans of the Market Wizards series of books since the first one landed with a splash in 1989. That was a time when trading had first exploded beyond the confines of the old-fashioned stock and commodity exchanges. There were new futures floors, new instruments, and rapid expansion of trading activities buoyed by the growth of futures and derivatives contracts and juiced up by the early computerised trading systems.Through a series of interviews for the book Jack Schwager introduced the world to trading legends, until then relatively unknown outside their small corner of the world. Traders such as Michael Marcus, who busted time after time after time, before finally growing $30,000 into $80,000,000 over a 10-year period. We learned of the wisdom of Ed Seykota, the feats of Paul Tudor-jones, and the skills of Richard Dennis. Jack introduced us to the Trading Turtles, and to many quotes which even now people repeat over and over again as inspirations. Schwager followed up the original book with 3 more outstanding versions, the New Market Wizards, Stock Market Wizards, and Hedge Fund Wizards, and now he has done it again, taking us in one sense back to the beginning and in another sense into the 2020s, with Unknown Market Wizards. We were delighted to have a chance to talk with chat, and for once Jack the interviewer, become Jack the interviewee. You can hear the fantastic insights Jack shares with us in his own words from years of talking to and working with the best around. It was a pleasure for us to this interview, and we are sure you will get something from it, whether you are new to the scene, or like us, have been around the markets for decades. Jack Schwager przeprowadził wywiady z najwybitniejszymi postaciami w branży i wydał je w formie serii książek "Czarodzieje rynku". Does a stock market trader need to be lucky? Or is there a skill that can be learned to get stock market trading success? Jack Schwager, author of the Market Wizard series, examines the difference between having “luck” in stock market trading and having a well-informed system or algorithm to choose trades. Unfortunately, some investors think intuition is all they need to make great stock choices. Intuition and luck shouldn’t be the basis of trading decisions. How do you know if you just got lucky or if you discovered a winning algorithm? Jack emphasizes that vigilance and good research are the most important criteria for success with an investment portfolio. Being well-educated about the current market is really the best course for any investor. Is the P/E ratio a reliable measure of a good stock? Many investors depend on the P/E (price earnings ratio) of a stock as an indicator of whether it is a “good buy.” Doug explains how the P/E ratio is calculated, discusses whether it really is a reliable measure of a quality stock. Is a stock’s P/E a reliable indication as to how it might perform? Michael and Jack Schwager talk about his new venture Fund Seeder. Jack is the author of the Market Wizard series. His books have remained relevant over the past 25 years, and for many traders they are the best trading books on the shelves today. Michael and Jack talk about the structure of the Market Wizards books and how they evolved to interview style format. Michael thanks Jack for opening his mind on the direction he took the Trend Following Radio podcast. Many of the traders Jack was able to interview, such as Bruce Kovner and Michael Marcus, never did another interview after “Market Wizards.” A lot of the secret to the book series success was the exclusivity of the interviews. Michael asks, “Of all the traders you have talked to, what trader impressed you the most?” Jack has a hard time, of course, narrowing it down to just one because there has been so many extraordinary people that he has interviewed. That being said, in terms of track records and sheer intellect, he would chose one. Jack was completely awed by his accomplishments and was surprised how great he was on a personal level. There has been a strong trend over the years for money to go to bigger and bigger asset managers. It has become a safer thing to do, to put money with a larger manager. It isn’t performance driven, it is purely safety driven. Jack says that even if you have skill it is becoming exceedingly more difficult to gain new clients and get big. Jack’s new venture is focused on helping these start up traders. The firm helps connect investors as well as companies that may want to find new and upcoming traders. Jack elaborates on the match making process and how they present verified and unverified track records. If you could ask anything to the man who has interviewed the world’s top traders, what would it be? In this episode Jack Schwager, author of the legendary Market Wizard series, discusses writing his books and the answer to that seminal question - what are the characteristics of great traders? Jack also discusses FundSeeder, his new project designed to find the undiscovered great traders.   Jack Schwager Jack Schwager wrote Market Wizards to capture the characteristics of great traders through their stories. Starting with Michael Marcus and then Ed Seykota, he went on a cookie crumb trail around the USA and created the legendary Market Wizards series. Filled with timeless truths the books are classic literature for every trader. In this interview hear how the Market Wizard series evolved, what Jack Schwager learnt from writing it, and the seminal question to ask the Market Wizard himself – what characteristics make a great trader to set them apart from everyone else? Jack discusses two traits in detail: 1.  There is NO ONE WAY TO MAKE MONEY IN THE MARKETS and you have to find an approach that fits your belief system. Many Market Wizards view each other’s trading approach with complete cynicism and they often have conflicting opinions 180 degrees apart. ‘There are a billion ways to make money in the markets. Unfortunately they are all difficult to find.’ - Jack Schwager 2.  You need complete FLEXIBILITY and LACK OF LOYALTY to a share. Great traders are able to change their direction on a dime, not only are they able to get out but they are able to flip positions. Jack also discusses FundSeeder, his new project to discover undiscovered trading talent and connect them with investors. To find out more go to www.fundseeder.com
