Chris Whalen: Inflated – Money, Debt, and the American Dream

Tom Bodrovics introduces Chris Whalen, author of Inflated: Money, Debt, and the American Dream, which has been re-released in a second edition with significant updates. The conversation focuses on the current state of markets, the impact of President Trump's tariff policies, and the challenges posed by the federal debt and inflation. Chris explains that he removed 20,000 words from his original book to make space for a new chapter analyzing the Federal Reserve's management of the money supply under Ben Bernanke, Janet Yellen, and Jerome Powell. He highlights how the U.S. housing market has become heavily government-supported, leading to increased volatility and rising costs for consumers. Discussing inflation, Chris notes that it is driven by the inability of governments to generate sufficient income to meet their people's needs, as seen in countries like Argentina. He argues that borrowing from future income through debt creates distortions, particularly in housing markets, where prices have surged due to low interest rates and government intervention. He also critiques the dysfunctionality of Congress, which he believes is unable to pass budgets or manage spending effectively. Chris emphasizes the importance of gold as a hedge against inflation and expresses skepticism about stablecoins and cryptocurrencies, calling them speculative vehicles rather than reliable alternatives to fiat currency. He suggests that the U.S. dollar's dominance in global markets contributes to inflationary pressures, as other countries benefit from using dollars without bearing the associated costs. The discussion concludes with Chris offering an optimistic outlook, noting that while challenges remain, opportunities exist for investors to navigate inflation through real estate and gold. He encourages listeners to manage investments with a long-term perspective, considering the erosive effects of even low levels of inflation over time. Tom Bodrovics welcomes back Greg Weldon, the publisher of Global Macro Strategy Report and the Gold Guru, for a discussion on the US markets, with a focus on the economy and consumer spending. With over four decades of experience in financial markets and commodity trading, Greg expresses concerns about economic stress despite celebratory employment reports, citing labor market conditions worsening with rising unemployment, underemployment, and declining savings rates. Consumers are also facing increasing credit card and auto loan delinquencies while disposable income decreases and government handouts account for an expanding share. Greg suggests the economy might already be rolling over, and the Fed would like to see asset prices decrease before declaring victory in inflation, despite the policy rate being higher than current inflation. Commercial real estate is another major concern, with the Fed seeming behind the curve. Greg shares his perspective that the Fed might be showing a willingness to accept higher general rates of inflation to protect consumers and the economy despite risks of inducing a credit crunch. The discussion touches upon Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell's challenges in maintaining an apolitical stance during the divisive US election year and potential social unrest leading to economic negatives. Greg also mentions commercial real estate debt due in the next 12 months, which could lead to bank failures for regional banks holding 80% of that debt. Greg discusses the implications of a consumer wake-up call in the stock market or another Plaza Accord-like agreement among major global powers as potential catalysts for the U.S. dollar's next round of debasement. He also mentions natural events, climate change, and geopolitical conflicts that could impact currencies and commodities, particularly gold. Greg encourages being aggressive defensively by shorting the S&P 500 when the time comes and suggests optimism about future performance for platinum and certain mining shares. He believes mining as a whole will benefit from increased enthusiasm towards gold. Lastly, Mr. Weldon emphasizes the importance of staying adaptive, not being bound by historical prices or market assumptions, researching a good Commodity Trading Advisor, importance of proper risk management, and understanding futures trading. He provides conservative and aggressive portfolios for investors and has developed algorithms that rank mining shares. Greg suggests that investors can take advantage of the current downturn by looking for opportunities in the homebuilding market and index ETFs. He believes that gold could be a long-term buy and hold opportunity driven by inflation and central bank policies. He recommends investing in a small group or a broad-based portfolio of gold stocks. Greg emphasizes the use of charts to identify patterns and trends for investment decisions. He encourages becoming proactive and agile in investing to avoid falling behind. Christopher Zook, founder and Chief Investment Officer of CAZ Investments, which oversees around $5 billion in assets under management, joins Julia La Roche on episode 72 for a wide-ranging macroeconomic discussion.  In this episode, Zook shares that a recession is coming, and it's “going to be deeper and probably longer than people think.” He adds that we'll have a “manufactured recession,” where inflation is running so hot that the Federal Reserve has to raise rates fast to slow down inflation, forcing the economy into a recession. Moreover, he points out that markets believe the Fed will start cutting rates by the end of the year, something Zook does not expect to happen.   In these types of environments, Zook is looking for opportunities in dislocated assets or persistent assets that perform well, even if his hypothesis is found to be true.  Zook has over 30 years of experience investing in traditional and alternative asset classes. He was recently honored with the Texas Alternative Investments Association's (TAIA) Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his contribution and sustained support of the industry in Texas. Our guest today is Kyle Inserra, a “recovering” restaurant owner, commercial real estate advisor, and prolific content creator. In this episode, we dive deep into Kyle's twisting and turning career journey from working in finance to the restaurant industry and commercial real estate. We talk about what people get wrong about social media and digital marketing platforms, what makes a great brand, and how can you do more business simply by showing up and being yourself.  Learn more about Kyle and his story at: www.growingcareersandcompanies.com. “You are only one step away from potentially changing your life.” “If your gut is telling you that, that's what it is. It's gonna be scary but you have to do it.”   02:25 Kyle grew up in a family of educators and he thought his path was to be a lawyer, a doctor, or work on Wall Street. After graduating from college, he started working on Wall Street but soon realized that it wasn't for him. In 2001, he decided to go after his dream of working in the restaurant business. Kyle graduated from The French Culinary Institute in 2002 and dove into the industry.   In 2007, Kyle co-founded 2 successful restaurant concepts in New York. After working in the restaurant business for 15 years with 55-60 hour workweeks, Kyle decided to use his expertise in another way. He transitioned to commercial real estate in 2020 and now works as a CRE advisor for restaurant owners. “Ultimately people want to connect with people who they can relate to. Once you put out there who you are, you're gonna start attracting people you actually want to work with.”   21:30 Kyle is very active on social media, and he coaches his clients on how to use these platforms creatively. Today, it's important to be authentic and good at storytelling - just be yourself so you can attract people who can relate to you.   Kyle created an accountability group for CRE advisors where he helps them navigate the various social media platforms to get better at digital marketing. The Final 3 Questions     What is the lesson that has taken you the longest to learn?   Patience. He learned over time that the real reward and the real goal come with patience.   What are the 2 principles from the Growing Careers & Companies Framework that resonate the most with you?   Authenticity and Community. For Kyle, community means education and networking. He learned a lot from different communities that he could use in his own career, so he encourages everyone to dive into different communities and learn.     What do you hope others take away from your story?   That you can do what you want to do because there are options out there for you. You got to be your true, authentic self so you can start connecting and working with people who you enjoy working with. We all recognize the names: Dogecoin, Gamestop, Robinhood. For every long-term boring investment, there is a high risk speculative asset or platform just waiting to gobble up our spare money . When we think of individual investors, we have a rather laissez faire attitude. So be it. But what happens when it is your advisor, broker, or investment house that is giving you bad advice. When does it cross the line from poor performance to deception and outright self-serving fraud? And more importantly, how do you protect yourself before it happens. And who do you turn to for help when all the money is gone!   David Meyer has been dubbed “The Screwed Investor's Lawyer”. He has achieved jury verdicts, arbitration awards and settlements with a combined value of hundreds of millions of dollars on behalf of his clients. He had the honor of winning the largest jury verdict in Ohio's history, a verdict in excess of $260 million on behalf of 250 investors against Prudential Securities. His new book is The Investor Protector: Stories of Triumph over Financial Advisors Who Lie, Cheat, and Steal.

"We're talking about a minority of brokers, of course. But when you've got over a million advisors in this country, even a small percent can cause some devastating harm." - David Meyer How did David's first case turn into the biggest jury settlement in Ohio history? What are some red flags that should make you think twice about your broker? How can you protect yourself from investment fraud? Why did David write a book that could put him out of business? How can you expand your impact beyond your practice? A Full Recovery David Meyer is a nationally-esteemed attorney and founding principal of the firm Meyer Wilson. He specializes in representing victims of investment fraud, people who have lost their life savings by entrusting them to unethical and speculative financial advisors. Over two decades, David has recovered millions of dollars from fraudulent investors for his clients. The very first investment fraud case he took as a 28-year- old ended in a $261 million dollar class action verdict against Prudential Securities for over 200 retirees. It was the largest jury verdict in Ohio history, and all the plaintiffs recovered 100% of their losses. Since then, David has represented over 1,000 individual investors across the country. The Best Defense Trust is essential for financial advisors. Their clients don't know nearly as much about investing — that's the reason they need a financial advisor in the first place. But sometimes, financial advisors abuse that trust. When that happens, ordinary people can lose a lifetime's worth of work overnight. David says the easiest way to level the playing field is to look up your broker on brokercheck.org. This will tell you if they have any outstanding complaints against them from the SEC and can prevent you from ending up with an untrustworthy advisor. If you receive a notice of a problem from your broker's supervisor (so-called "happiness letters"), David recommends immediately contacting a third party, as the brokerage will act to protect its own interests, not yours. Planned Obsolescence Even though he's made a name for himself as an investment attorney, David ultimately hopes that fraud decreases to a point where clients won't need him anymore. To this end, he's written a book called “The Investor Protector” detailing stories from his years observing financial misconduct. The book includes basic financial education and practical advice so that you can protect you and your loved ones. He calls it "body armor" for retirement savers. And if he gets fewer clients because of it? That's fine by him. He just wants to make a difference. Key takeaways: Do your homework. Check out your financial advisor's history on brokercheck.com. Don't be ashamed. Many people keep quiet out of embarrassment if they suspect their financial advisor has taken advantage of them. The only way to recover your savings is to reach out to someone! Work beyond your office. Sometimes being the best lawyer isn't about being a lawyer at all. Find a way to drive change — whether it's as an attorney, an educator, or a policymaker. As Nancy tells it, she "went from Wall Street to Weeds." And, I am so happy she did. Nancy is a charming interview and a dedicated gardener who generously shares her encyclopedic knowledge of weeds with us in this episode of Still Growing. Steve Eubanks is a bestselling author and award-winning writer whose work has appeared in Sports Illustrated, FoxSports.com, Yahoo!, Golf Digest,Golf World,Golf Magazine.. and the list goes on... A college golfer who was resoundingly thumped often enough to realize he could not play for a living, Steve became a club professional and general manager. He became a distressed golf property specialist who did work for CitiGroup, Prudential Securities, Bank of America, and the Royal Bank of Scotland. He and a group of partners built and owned golf properties in the Southeastern U.S. Then, in a radical career move, Steve became a writer. In addition to authoring the first unauthorized club history of Augusta National, Steve has authored novels, narrative non-fiction sports-history books, a golf memoir, and co-authored books with Arnold Palmer, Lou Holtz, Jeff Gordon, Tracy Austin, Mark H. McCormack, Butch Harmon and Ty Murray among others. Steve was also the publishing consultant for the Royal & Ancient Golf Club at St. Andrews. Steve is a frequent guest speaker. He taught seminars and business schools for the PGA of America, and was the keynote speaker at the 2007 Joint Forces Reserve Orientation Course, Command Second Fleet, Norfolk, Virginia. Steve lives in Peachtree City, Georgia with his wife and children. Founded in 1933, the Augusta National Golf Club is the perfect course. Co-designed by legends Bobby Jones and Alister MacKenzie, Augusta boasts gorgeous fairways and perfectly manicured greens, set against a breathtaking backdrop of azaleas and pines. Every April, the invitation-only Masters Tournament is watched by millions of avid viewers around the globe. But the exclusive club, with a membership comprising some of the world's most powerful and influential men, is also notorious for a legacy of secrets and controversy. Journalist and novelist Steve Eubanks used all of his investigative and storytelling talents to get to the heart of Augusta's turbulent history, including its 44-year rule under the iron fist of Cliff Roberts and his suicide on the club's grounds; the Masters' impetuous yet long-standing relationship with CBS; allegations of racism; and the club's countless, rigid rules (members can even be expelled for wearing their green Augusta blazers outside the club). With 45 inspiring photographs, Eubanks's balanced account also captures the historic moments that evoke deep affection for Augusta, from Dwight Eisenhower teeing off in the days before the Masters was televised to Jack Nicklaus's emotional victory at age 46, 23 years after he won his first green jacket. With a new chapter on Tiger Woods's 1997 triumph and published just in time for the 1998 Masters, Augusta is essential reading for anyone who wants the complete story of American golf's most hallowed groundVisit the Golf Talk Radio sponsors and tell them GTRadio sent you they help make the show possible! Slickstix.com, Avila Beach Golf Resort, Blacklake Golf Resort, Shore Cliff Lodge and Aramco Mortgage and Dr. Tullius.  Visit Golftalkradio.com for the latest show information, contests, videos iPhone and Android Apps and more!
