On this episode we're joined by two experts, John Doresky and Will McDearman, to explain the story of the Red-cockaded Woodpecker.  John is the current USFWS Recovery Coordinator and Will, now retired, was the previous coordinator.  Both men have spent most of their careers studying these birds and have interesting information to share. The RCW is a small woodpecker that used to be abundant in the longleaf pine ecosystems, but has had challenges as most of their habitat has changed. The story of how man-made cavities have helped save the birds is a really good one. You'll never look at woodpeckers the same after listening. It's interesting how when we manage for quail and turkeys it benefits these endangered birds. Listen, Learn and Enjoy. If you enjoyed this Gamekeeper episode, send the guys a message and don't forget to include your contact info so we can reach you if you win a prize! Admittedly, Muskox probably aren't high on most people's list of animals to learn about or even hunt, but their story is downright amazing. Most people don't know that they were extirpated in Alaska by the 1920's. In the 1930's some forward thinking conservation minded folks got together and hatched a plan to bring them back. Purchasing captured animals in Greenland, they then had to be transported to the USA, quarantined and readied for a rail trip across the country and another boat trip up to Alaska. The story is worth a listen and reminds us how conservation projects are rarely easy.Listen Learn and Enjoy. If you enjoyed this Gamekeeper episode, send the guys a message and don't forget to include your contact info so we can reach you if you win a prize! A new code of practice for the controlled burning of moorland in Scotland, which was due to be published on 1st July is being delayed, amid protests from gamekeepers that it won't work. Muirburn, as the controlled burning is known, is used by many gamekeepers to manage sensitive moorland to enable habitat for grouse, for shooting on many estates. Gamekeepers say it also reduces the vegetative load, which helps prevent wildfires. The Muirburn Code has been drawn up after months of work with stakeholders, including gamekeepers and conservationists. The document's been overseen by NatureScot, Scotland's national environment agency, but The Scottish Gamekeepers Association says the draft code falls shortVery little rain, very high temperatures and a lot of sunshine means some farmers have started one of the earliest harvests many can remember - and the grain is so dry some farmers are talking about re-wetting it when it comes out of storage. All week we're talking about the most important part of growing anything - the soil. One way to improve it is to grow another shorter plant among the main cash crop, to keep the soil covered. We visit a farm in Northamptonshire which has been running extensive trials to see how inter cropping could benefit the soil.Presenter = Anna Hill Producer = Rebecca Rooney

On this episode we're joined by Johnny Wilson, PhD, of Central Life Sciences to explain the invasive red and black imported fire ants (Genus Solenopsis). In the South these tiny ants are everywhere, and we wondered if and how they impact the wildlife we so dearly love.  The short answer is YES, they do! We wanted to learn about how they got here, how they operate, how to deal with them and can we control or at least suppress them without harming birds, reptiles, mammals and even other beneficial insects. We learned a lot and what we gleaned can help us all be better Gamekeepers. Listen, Learn and Enjoy. Central Life Sciences Ant Control https://www.centralantcontrol.comExtinguish https://www.facebook.com/ExtinguishFireAntshttps://x.com/ExtinguishCLS If you enjoyed this Gamekeeper episode, send the guys a message and don't forget to include your contact info so we can reach you if you win a prize! Scottish gamekeepers may refuse to help tackle wildfires in a dispute over licences for muirburn. Muirburn is the controlled burning of heather and other vegetation to encourage new growth, mostly to raise game birds for shooting. It takes place from autumn to spring, but from January next year it will be licensed and it will be an offence to carry out any burning without a licence. Gamekeepers say controlled burning reduces the amount of dead vegetation which fuels wildfires and if they can't do it, they say tackling future wildfires will become too dangerous. All week we've been following the harvest. It started early for many and one of the country's largest cherry growers in Herefordshire says warmer winters and summers are shortening the growing season. Britain's newest and largest Green Bridge is under construction in the Cotswolds as part of a half billion-pound road building scheme. When it's completed at the end of the year, the bridge won't be tarmacked - instead it'll be planted with grasses, wildflowers and shrubs designed to create a crossing for wildlife, and walkers over a new eight lane highway near Cheltenham.Presenter = Charlotte Smith Producer = Rebecca Rooney
