Episode #467: Slot Machines to Sunlight: Rethinking Computers with Moritz Bierling

Crazy Wisdom

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 16, 2025 55:05

In this episode of Crazy Wisdom, host Stewart Alsop speaks with Moritz Bierling, community lead at Daylight Computer, about reimagining our relationship to technology through intentional hardware and software design. The conversation traverses the roots of Daylight Computer—born from a desire to mitigate the mental and physiological toll of blue light and digital distraction—into explorations of AI integration, environmental design, open-source ethos, and alternative models for startup funding. Moritz discusses the vision behind Daylight's “Outdoor Computing Club,” a movement to reclaim nature as a workspace, and the broader philosophical inquiry into a “third timeline” that balances techno-optimism and primitivism. You can explore more about the project at daylightcomputer.com and connect through their primary social channels on X (Twitter) and Instagram.Check out this GPT we trained on the conversationTimestamps00:00 – Introduction to Daylight Computer, critique of mainstream tech as a distraction machine, and inspiration from Apple's software limitations.05:00 – Origin story of Daylight, impact of blue light, and how display technology influences wellbeing.10:00 – Exploration of e-ink vs. RLCD, Kindle as a sanctuary, and Anjan's experiments with the Remarkable tablet.15:00 – Development of Solo OS, the role of spaces in digital environments, and distinctions between hardware and software.20:00 – Vision for AI-assisted computing, voice interaction, and creating a context-aware interface.25:00 – Emphasis on environmental design, using devices outdoors, and the evolutionary mismatch of current computing.30:00 – Reflections on solar punk, right relationship with technology, and rejecting accelerationism.35:00 – Introduction of the third timeline, rhizomatic organizational structure, and critique of VC funding models.40:00 – Discussions on alternative economics, open-source dynamics, and long-term sustainability.45:00 – Outdoor Computing Club, future launches, on-device AI, and the ambition to reclaim embodied computing.Key InsightsTechnology as Both Lifeline and HindranceMoritz Bierling frames modern computing as a paradox: it connects us to society and productivity while simultaneously compromising our well-being through overstimulation and poor design. The Daylight Computer aims to resolve this by introducing hardware that reduces digital fatigue and invites outdoor use.Inspiration from E-Ink and Purposeful ToolsThe initial concept for Daylight Computer was inspired by the calm, focused experience of using a Kindle. Its reflective screen and limited functionality helped Anjan, the founder, realize the power of devices built for singular, meaningful purposes rather than general distraction.Designing for Contextual IntentWith the introduction of Sol OS, Daylight enables users to define digital “spaces” aligned with different modes of being—such as waking, deep work, or relaxation. This modular approach supports intentional interaction and reduces the friction of context-switching common in modern OS designs.Respectful Integration of AIRather than chasing full automation, the Daylight team is exploring AI in a measured way. They're developing features like screen-aware AI queries through physical buttons, creating a contextual assistant that enhances cognition without overpowering it or promoting dependency.Alternative Economic ModelsRejecting venture capital and the short-term incentives of traditional tech funding, Daylight pursues a community-backed model similar to Costco's membership. This aligns financial sustainability with shared values, rather than extracting maximum profit.Third Timeline VisionMoritz discusses a conceptual “third timeline”—a balanced future distinct from both primitivism and techno-solutionism. This alternative future integrates technology into life harmoniously, fostering right relationship between humans, nature, and machines.Environmental Computing and Cultural RegenerationDaylight is not just a hardware company but a movement in environmental design. Through initiatives like the Outdoor Computing Club, they aim to restore sunlight as a central influence in human life and work, hinting at a cultural shift toward solar punk aesthetics and embodied digital living.

This is part one of a beautifully flowing conversation between two friends—both with an incredible eye for detail. Fraser Smith, the founder of EH9 Espresso, and Camillo Feuchter, a designer and maker, first crossed paths through the EH9's Perth Road cafe. Over time their relationship flourished into a collaborative partnership in the design and creation of EH9's second home on Annfield Road. Fraser's journey started young—buying and reselling cans of juice on the school bus. That entrepreneurial spark never faded, and during lockdown, he turned it into something bigger: his own coffee brand. For Camillo, growing up in Germany and studying Interior and Environmental Design in Dundee shaped his approach to making. His skills in craft and material experimentation—like transforming discarded bottle tops into beautifully designed stools—brought a fresh perspective to EH9's new space. In this episode, we dive into their backstories, their growing friendship, and the vision behind the new cafe. Plus, we explore the power of authenticity, the magic of word-of-mouth marketing (involving a lot of flat whites), and what it takes to build a community around a business. Part two continues the journey and dives more deeply into the process of transforming the space and is out on Friday 4th of April. Architecture is more than just buildings—it’s about creating spaces that inspire, connect, and serve communities. That’s something Wes Thiele understands well. Originally from Atlanta, Wes moved to Lafayette in 2009, drawn by the steady opportunities in construction. Career prospects took Wes to Dallas, but Lafayette left an impression on him. When he got the chance to move back to Lafayette, he pounced on it. Today, Wes is a partner at Diverse Studio, a firm he co-founded in 2023 with a vision to make spaces that have real impact. It has offices in Dallas and Lafayette and six full-time employees. The firm specializes in commercial projects — schools, churches, civic centers and more. With every project, they try to create inspirational places. Wes is also a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design accredited professional, meaning he specializes in green building practices. From designing spaces to preserving them—our next guest takes a different approach to shaping landscapes. Allen McClain is a lifelong farmer, managing thousands of acres of rice and crawfish. He studied agriculture at McNeese and is on the board of directors for the Louisiana Farm Bureau. But he’s also the founder of L’Terre, a unique retreat that invites guests to experience Louisiana’s natural beauty firsthand. In a nutshell, it’s a cross between agritourism and ecotourism. You can go birdwatching, catch your own crawfish, gator hunts, guided hikes and more. Allen’s farm is all about reconnecting people with the land — and there’s a lot of it: Six thousand acres. L’Terre attracts guests from across the globe. And they come for all kinds of reasons. The farm has hosted corporate retreats and films. Locals even pop by to take in the farm’s beauty. Whether you’re designing and constructing buildings, or enjoying the parts of Louisiana where there are no buildings in sight, it’s all about balance. Even the most ardent environmental ecologist has to go home to a building at night. The Bellevue Montgomery project, led by Scott Kern, CEO of KPS Development Partners, is more than just another housing development. It's a bold attempt to create affordable, community-focused homes while offering residents an opportunity to invest in their neighborhood. The project's design departs from traditional apartment complexes, offering a “cottage court” style with 11 buildings and 23 units built around a shared courtyard. As Scott explained, “The idea is that…you park your car, and as you're walking to your front door, you're passing two-thirds of your neighbors. So it really is about creating a communal space.” This layout fosters a sense of belonging, transforming the development into a hub for community interaction.Bellevue Montgomery also addresses the critical need for affordable workforce housing. The units are priced for renters earning around 80% of the area median income (AMI), with rents for one-bedroom apartments set at $1,200—significantly below market rates. Scott emphasized the importance of this housing category: “It's what we call workforce housing…nurses, students, firemen, teachers, etc.”The project's innovative financing approach also sets it apart. Instead of relying solely on institutional investors, Scott and his team chose to raise capital through regulated investment crowdfunding. Hosted on the Small Change platform, this strategy allows community members to invest with as little as $1,000, democratizing access to real estate opportunities. As Scott put it, “The idea that you can open up a project to the community, the neighborhood, the city, the county…was really appealing to us.”The land itself, a former school site unused for over 50 years, symbolizes the revitalization of neglected spaces. With Bellevue Montgomery, Scott's team is not only filling a physical gap but also stitching together a neighborhood with diverse residents and stakeholders.Scott's vision for Bellevue Montgomery is more than bricks and mortar; it's a blueprint for impact. “We're very keen on doing this within city limits…and providing value from the project we created,” he said. His commitment to community-driven development exemplifies how real estate can address societal needs while creating economic opportunity.Learn more about the Bellevue Montgomery project and how you can support it at Small Change.tl;dr:* Scott Kern's Bellevue Montgomery project transforms neglected land into affordable, community-focused housing in Memphis.* The development prioritizes workforce housing for teachers, nurses, and first responders, filling a crucial gap.* A courtyard design fosters community interaction, promoting a neighborly atmosphere among residents.* Regulated investment crowdfunding enables community members to invest, democratizing access to real estate projects.* Scott's superpower, creating impactful developments, drives his mission to improve cities and lives. How to Develop Creating Impactful Real Estate Projects As a SuperpowerScott's superpower lies in leveraging real estate development to make a meaningful difference in communities. As he shared, “I want to have an impact…by filling up a vacant lot or providing an affordable product…making cities better.” His focus on thoughtful, high-quality projects demonstrates how real estate can transform neighborhoods and improve lives. By ensuring his work aligns with community needs, Scott creates developments that generate pride and lasting value. When forming KPS Development Partners, Scott faced a pivotal decision: pursue easy, profitable retail developments or focus on impactful projects. Rejecting the path of least resistance, he and his partners chose to prioritize community-enhancing developments like Bellevue Montgomery. As Scott explained, “At the end of the day, I didn't want to pour my energy into [projects] when we could be pouring our energy into something that would…have a much more profound impact.”Actionable Tips for Developing This Superpower:* Align your work with values that prioritize community impact over personal gain.* Surround yourself with organizations and individuals committed to doing good.* Participate in nonprofit and community initiatives to stay connected with local needs.* Use your talents to support causes beyond your professional scope.By following Scott's example and advice, you can make creating impactful real estate projects a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. "Bangladesh has come out of a lot of difficulty in the past. Bangladesh is a place of hope, is a place of resilience ... We could again come together as a nation, with the ertailers and the brands supporting us, and make the transformation. It's a huge, huge opportunity."Rousing words from this week's compelling interview with manufacturer Shafiq Hassan, of the Echotex manufacturing facility in Gazipur, Bangladesh.Last year Bangladesh was ranked the third-largest exporter of clothing globally (after China and the European Union) exporting USD $38.4 billion worth of garments. The nation is home to over 40K garment factories of various sizes, and over 4 million garment workers.A decade after Rana Plaza, much progress has been made, including around environmental sustainability. Bangladesh now has 186 LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified factories, and, according to Reuters, lays claim to 9 of world's top 10 'green' garment factories (considering carbon, water and energy footprint, waste, logistics, and using more sustainable materials).Clare interviewed Shafiq in London, in September 2024, a little over month after peaceful students protests in Bangladesh toppled ex-Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, then presiding over an increasingly corrupt and authoritarian regime. Her government's response to the protests - appalling violence - is well documented. This week, a new report by the current interim government, titled Unfolding the Truth, implicates Hasina in as many as 3,500 cases of forced disappearances during her time in office.Warned the Solidarity Centre in August: "The economy of Bangladesh, depends on garment factories, but producers say customers are concerned about violence and disruption." What's more, the previous government's "repression against workers seeking to form and join unions has prevented garment workers from achieving the living wages and safe working conditions they have sought to achieve."So what's next? The Nobel peace laureate and economist Muhammad Yunus (founder of the Grameen bank) is leading the interim/ caretaker government. The factories are back working. Leading facilities like Echotex continue to innovate. What's unfolding is very relevant to the fashion sector, and to all of us who care about ethical production and want to understand the role brands have to play when it comes to what we hope are long term partnerships with suppliers. Can you help us spread the word ?Wardrobe Crisis is an independent production. We don't believe in barriers to entry and are determined to keep this content free.If you value it, please help by sharing your favourite Episodes, and rating / reviewing us in Apple orSpotify. She earned bachelor's degrees in civil engineering and geological sciences from Rutgers University, a master's in civil engineering from Ohio State University, and a Ph.D. in civil engineering from Virginia Tech. Her research expertise centers on geotechnical and geoenvironmental engineering and sustainability. At Drexel, Trish taught courses in civil and environmental engineering, geology, and sustainability.  Her course in sustainability, titled “Incorporating Sustainability Principles in Design” was inspired by her desire to teach design from a holistic, regenerative perspective that restores ecological balance and health in communities and ecosystems. The course explores how the concept of sustainability is fundamental to the planning, design, construction, operation, and renewal of resilient and sustainable infrastructure. Trish believes we need to work in our own communities to restore functional ecosystems in urban and suburban areas. The Hearing Architecture podcast proudly sponsored by Brickworks, presents Again and Again and Again, a mini-series hosted by Hilary Duff. Each week, we will bring you interviews and conversations as we seek better ways to understand, harness and deploy the expertise and knowledge of professionals currently within the design community, at home and abroad. Our guests are all experts on circularity within the building industry and share the aim to display that waste is not an accident but the consequence of decisions made at the design stage. Here is our opportunity. We, as designers, have an opportunity to do better. In this episode, we hear from Andri Snær Magnason. He is not our usual podcast guest as he is not a formally trained architect, yet he has worked alongside them, written for and about them, and comes from a lineage of family involved in the environment, whether built or natural. I thought that my conversation with Andri would be a good starting point for the publication of my research because he deals with words and facts in a way that we as humans can relate. His books, projects, presentations, and advocacy all try to convince us of one thing: We need to start connecting to future in an intimate and urgent way. Today's discussion focuses less on architecture, and more on our environment as a setting for our future and how and why we care about it. Andri is a Reykjavik-based Icelandic writer and documentary filmmaker, who navigates the realms of environmental activism, architecture, visual art, music, film, and theatre. He ran in the 2016 Icelandic presidential election, where he passionately advocated on environmental issues. His literary portfolio spans novels, poetry, essays, theatre and children's books, performed and published across more than 40 countries. His 2019 National bestseller, "On Time and Water," delves poetically into the alarming realities of environmental change, approaching the subject as if a shared tale at the dinner table.  Time, particularly in the context of climate change, is a recurrent theme in his work, and he offers an intimate perspective that resonates amidst the overwhelming facts and figures. In our conversation, Andri emphasizes the challenge of connecting people to a future that seems beyond imagination, stressing the need for a more personal understanding of time as a dimension in the face of global changes.  I spoke with Andri back in his office in Reykjavik in August 23, after I had just returned from a hike in the highlands of Iceland to view the now declassified OK glacier, and Andri's commemorative plaque which we discuss in our recording. Our interview explores the power of language and its ability to collapse these wide expanses of time into something we can feel, touch and get close to emotionally. It was a joy to speak about these topics in which architecture slots itself within. Energy, resources, materials, landscape, and time. This has been Again&Again&Again, a mini-series of Hearing Architecture, proudly sponsored by Brickworks, and made possible with the support of the Alastair Swayn Foundation.  Thank you so much for listening and thank you to our international guest Andri Snaer Magnason for your discussion, your stories and your myths. We join you in the goal of making the future feel intimate, relevant, and in realising the interconnectedness of individuals and loved ones across the unfolding timeline we exist in. We look forward to speaking with you again. Our sponsor Brickworks also produces architecture podcasts hosted by Tim Ross. On the latest 8111 I catch up with Stephen Rosenbaum!!! Stephen grew up in Los Angeles and always loved building things. As the youngest of three he thought he'd likely follow in his father's footsteps and become a doctor. But in 1977 he saw Star Wars and the seed was planted. While attending Berkeley he enrolled in the College of Environmental Design and began working in the nascent field of computer graphics. Stephen decided to stay in Northern California after college and landed a dream job as the first TA (Technical Assistant) at Industrial Light and Magic in 1989. Under the guidance of Doug Kay and George Joblove he honed his skills, developing software tools and scripts for managing files. The team was small and the opportunities were omnipresent. In those early days Stephen shared an office with John Knoll and they worked together to present some of the first digital composites. With the successes of The Abyss, Terminator 2, and Jurassic Park (among others) Stephen became the Computer Graphics Supervisor on Forrest Gump. In 1995 he won the VFX Oscar alongside Ken Ralston and George Murphy. When Ken Ralston left ILM for Sony Imageworks, Stephen joined his mentor and began working as a Visual Effects Supervisor on Contact. Stephen list of credits is impressive; Indian in the Cupboard, I Robot, The Waterhorse, Avatar,  and he's been nominated for the VFX Oscar three times. Most recently Stephen served as the Visual Effects Supervisor on the impressive Apple TV+ series Masters of the Air. It was great fun to catch up with Stephen and to hear about his amazing journey. I cannot wait to see what he works on next.

It's about embracing different ‘lives' within our lifespan stages—20s, 20-40, 40-60, and beyond. I've reached my ‘third life' at 40, prompting a focus on becoming a composed figure amidst chaos, solving problems with a stoic calmness. Thoughts On Breathing Breathing used to begin with gratitude for that initial breath, but it's slipped away. Yet, hiking strenuous mountain trails redefines it. A 17-mile trek for fishing at 11,000 feet or a seemingly easy 3-mile hike with my daughter. That is challenging for her but exhilarating for me. Climbing steep slopes, sweat-drenched, and panting, I pause, leaning against the mountainside, smiling despite the exhaustion. My daughter wonders why. It's simple—the feeling of being alive in those moments. Breathing, in those hikes, signifies unequivocal existence. The intensity of physical exertion validates life. Every breath is a confirmation of being undeniably present, alive, and vibrant.   Bullying Story My childhood bully, Jonas, fueled my drive. Instead of combating him, I channeled his negativity into motivation. I held onto the vision of future success, using his actions as a catalyst. Keeping my focus on the prize—my success in architecture, construction, and personal pursuits—kept me driven. It wasn't about fighting back; it was about harnessing that negative energy as fuel for my ambitions, letting it ignite a fire in me to excel and succeed beyond those bullying moments.
