After yet another trip to the Elite 8 under Vic Schaefer, the Texas Longhorns found their stay in the NCAA Tournament cut short at the hands of the NCState Wolfpack. Recurring issues on both ends of the floor spelled doom for the Longhorns as the Wolfpack got the job done from behind the arc.
With both the men's and women's NCAA basketball tournaments in full swing, it feels like the women are stealing the show. Caitlin Clark, Juju Watson and Mississippi's own Madison Booker are quickly becoming household names nationwide. The Cleveland boys weigh in from Breckenridge, where it won't stop snowing.
When all-world point guard Rori Harmon was lost for the season due to injury, few gave Vic Schaefer's Texas Longhorns a chance to contend for a national title. But led by an almost incomprehensible adjustment — wing Madison Booker turning into an elite point guard overnight — Texas has won 32 games and cruised into the Sweet 16. Vic joins host Howard Megdal to discuss the inside story of how it all happened and what's next in an incredible season for Texas. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! After both teams put up dominating performances in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, their paths diverged. The Texas women continued their dominating ways and advanced to the Sweet 16 for the third time in four years under Vic Schaefer. A combination of suffocating defense and offensive rebounding led the ladies to the second weekend of the tournament and, hopefully, an even deeper run. The men's offensive struggles continued against Tennessee, with turnovers and a lack of consistent playmakers ultimately spelling the end of the season for them.
Spring football has started but March Madness is taking center on a jam-packed On Second Thought podcast.Hosts Cedric Golden and Kirk Bohls hit on what they saw from the Texas Longhorns on the first day of spring practice but first Texas basketball coaching legend Rick Barnes checks in to discuss his second-seeded Tennessee team's tournament hopes and a potential second-round clash with the Texas Longhorns, who he coached for 17 seasons and led to the 2003 Final Four where they lost to eventual national champion Syracuse and Carmelo Anthony in the semifinals. The men open with Colorado State Thursday.Women's basketball legend Andrea Lloyd, a member of the 1986 Longhorn team that went 34-0 en route to the program's lone national title, checks in and explains why she believes Vic Schaefer's crew will make it to the Final Four, which would be the program's first since the 2003 team that lost in the national semifinals to eventual national champion Connecticut and Diana Taurasi. The women open with Drexel Friday.
The Texas women's basketball team has seemingly rebounded and could potentially deliver on the lofty preseason expectations, despite losing stars to injury. With their recent streak, the Longhorns are right back in contention for the conference title but still have some climbing to do. How did Vic Schaefer and his squad pull off back-to-back ranked wins in a tough conference and what will it take to reach their goals? Connect with the show on Twitter and Facebook. In just three seasons under Vic Schaefer, the Texas Longhorns accomplished something that hadn't happened in two decades -- the women's basketball team claimed the Big 12 championship. Now, the expectations are higher than ever, with the most talented group that's been on campus since hall-of-fame coach Jody Conradt took Texas to the conference title and beyond. Returning all-conference players from a year ago, with talented additions coming in from the transfer portal and high school ranks, the Longhorns hope to make another deep run in the tournament after an uncharacteristically early exit a year ago. Guest: Johnnie Harris, Auburn Head CoachAuburn head coach Johnnie Harris joins the Basketball Podcast to share insights on building a program, staff management, and motivation. In just her first season Johnnie Harris helped Auburn double its win total from the previous season and pick up three victories over nationally ranked opponents. The second season was also a step in the right direction for the program as the team finished with a winning record for the first time since 2019 and advanced to the second round of the Women's National Invitational Tournament.Prior to her arrival at Auburn, Johnnie Harris was named the 2018 WBCA National Assistant Coach of the Year. She spent 16 years combined at Arkansas, Texas A&M and Mississippi State, and spent the 2020-21 season as the Associate Head Coach at the University of Texas. She helped Texas to an Elite Eight appearance during the 2020-21 season, and she worked alongside Longhorn head coach Vic Schaefer the previous 10 years assisting Mississippi State to a pair of NCAA Championship game appearances. She was a central part of Mississippi State's success those eight seasons and is considered one of the nation's top recruiters.Breakdown1:00 - Experience as an Assistant Coach3:00 - Celebrate Accomplishments8:00 - Motivation10:00 - Player Led15:00 - Pressure Defense17:30 - Recover to the Inside18:00 - Mismatches20:30 - Denial Defense22:30 - Inbound Attack24:19 - 25:27 - Hoopalytics 227:00 - Reps29:00 - Advocate for Yourself31:00 - Advice to Current Assistants38:30 - Thinking About Business40:00 - Solution Thinking43:00 - Layers of Evaluation46:00 - ConclusionJohnnie Harris' Bio:Bio: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johnnie_Harris_(basketball)Twitter: https://twitter.com/CoachJ_AUBasketball ImmersionWebsite: http://basketballimmersion.com/Twitter: https://twitter.com/bballimmersion?lang=enYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/user/basketballimmersionFacebook: https://facebook.com/basketballimmersionImmersion Videos:Check out all our all-access practice and specialty clinics: https://www.immersionvideos.com
With a dominant win over the Kansas State Wildcats, the Texas Longhorns' women's basketball team brought home their first regular-season title since the 2004 season -- just three seasons into the Vic Schaefer era. For their troubles, the Longhorns brought home three of the major conference awards, Coach of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, and Newcomer of the Year, in addition to three all-conference selections and a spot on the freshman team. They also now have the advantage of being the top seed in the Big 12 tournament, setting them up for a run at the tournament title and potentially a high seed in the NCAA Tournament in a few weeks. What are the expectations for the Longhorns in the postseason and how deep can the run be? We also dive in on the close finish for the men's team, unable to close the book on the regular season race, but positioning themselves on the opposite side of the bracket from both the Baylor Bears and the Kansas Jayhawks. That favorable positioning puts them in a prime position to make a run at another conference tournament title, in a season that could have been lost. Connect with the show on Twitter and Facebook. The Texas Longhorn women are having a nice season win wise but are banged up while clinging to hopes of wining a Big 12 regular season title.Coach Vic Schaefer joins this week's On Second Thought podcast to discuss the regular season finale at Kansas State, how Texas (22-8, 13-4 in the Big 12) is dealing with its mounting injury situation and the general mindset of the team after a disappointing home loss to Baylor on Senior Night.Hosts Cedric Golden and Kirk Bohls also break down what's ailing the 3-5 Texas baseball team and which of the five Texas football players have the most to gain at the NFL Combine this weekend in Indianapolis.

Thanks to their recent shared success, both the Texas men and the Texas women sit atop the Big 12 standings as they head into the final stretch of the regular season. The men played four teams ranked in the top 11 in the country over a span of 10 days, going 2-2 in the stretch. The two wins included a home win over the Baylor Bears and a road win over the Kansas State Wildcats, the only Big 12 team to beat the Longhorns in Austin. With some help from the usual conference chaos, the Longhorns' 8-3 conference record has them currently settled atop the standings as they take on the bottom three teams in their next three games. Vic Schaefer and the Texas women are one of the hottest teams in the country right now, rattling of their sixth-consecutive win with a nine-point win over the Texas Tech Red Raiders in Austin. Their one-game margin at the top of the conference will likely come under duress sooner rather than later with Iowa State ahead who sits just two games out of first place in the league. On both the men's and women's sides, the Texas Longhorns had a very successful week on the hardwood. Under interim head coach Rodney Terry, the men's team overcame not one, but two double-digit deficits to improve to 4-1 in conference play and 7-1 since Terry took over the squad. Obviously, come-from-behind wins are not how you want it to happen every time, but making second-half adjustments is a strength for the Longhorns at the start of conference play. We dive in on what we think is causing the slow starts and how Texas manages to spark it in the second half. On the ladies' side, in typical fashion during the Vic Schaefer era, the Longhorns have started to build momentum heading into the grind of conference play, knocking off back-to-back ranked opponents in dominant fashion. It is still early, but we dive in on early signs of another "peak at the right time" performance for Texas under Schaefer. Connect with the show on Twitter and Facebook. For the last two seasons under Vic Schaefer, the Texas Longhorns women's basketball team has been ahead of expectations. Two runs to the Elite 8 were well ahead of where they should have been under a new coach, with young playmakers trying to figure it out. This year, after adding some key pieces from the transfer portal to an already explosive roster, the Longhorns sit at No. 3 in the country. They are ready to move past the ahead of schedule and break through the ceiling of the Elite 8 they've bumped up against in the previous two seasons. So after one dominant exhibition game, how did the new-look Longhorns fare and how did the new talent gel with the existing pieces? What is a fair set of expectations for what is one of the most talented rosters in the country? Connect with the show on Twitter and Facebook. Texas women's basketball coach Vic Schaefer joins host Howard Megdal to talk about the Longhorns, who have reached a pair of Elite Eights, but now eye even bigger prizes in Schaefer's third season running the program. The two discuss the precociousness of Rori Harmon, the impact of Shay Holle entering the starting lineup last year, and what the massive influx of transfer talent and freshmen alike will to do embolden an offensive attack to match one of the most frighteningly effective defenses in the country. The NCAA Tournament is in full swing. On the men's side, the Texas Longhorns avoided the upset everyone wanted to happen and put together a drama-free outing against the Virginia Tech Hokies to pick up the team's first NCAA Tournament win since 2014. In the second round, Texas went up early on the Purdue Boilermakers but struggled to score in the first half and ultimately lost a game closer than the final score indicated. The Texas women, however, took care of business as a two-seed, dominating Fairfield and Utah to advance to the Sweet 16 for the second consecutive year under head coach Vic Schaefer. This makes six straight Sweet 16s for Schaefer, leading a team that is young and talented, potentially even ahead of schedule as they look to knock off the Ohio State Buckeyes in the next round.
