Freshwater crustaceans in the superfamilies Astacoidea and Parastacoidea

Crayfish, Crawfish, Crawdad; no matter what you call them, If you live in the southeastern United States, their biodiversity hotspot is in your backyard! Astacologist (crayfish biologist) Dr. Zack Graham joins us on this episode to tell us just how wild these freshwater crustaceans are. He shares just a bit of his knowledge on their biodiversity, interesting behaviors, their impact on American culture, and some of the unique threats they continue to face. At the end of the day, why do crayfish matter? Zack says, “I think at a basic level, humans are just generally curious about what's going on out in nature. And that's what really fuels a lot of my work, just trying to understand what has happened in the past, what's going to happen in the future to these animals that have been living on earth for over 300 million years. They've been here for a very long time. So I think, you know, they kind of have a right to be here and to be protected and to be studied and understood.”A transcript of this episode can be found here: Zack Graham - TranscriptEpisode image credit: Zack GrahamLearn more about Zack's lab: https://crayfish.westliberty.edu/You can also follow them on facebook: www.facebook.com/wlucrayfishAnd on Instagram: @wlucrayfishlabYou can order Zack's book here: https://uncpress.org/9781469685731/crayfish-crawfish-crawdad/Learn more about the International Association of Astacology: https://www.astacology.org/default.asp?uid=GuestPeruse the American Crayfish Atlas: https://americancrayfishatlas.web.illinois.edu/And check out some beautiful crayfish photos from Zack's adventures: https://www.flickr.com/photos/196391561@N03/Be sure to follow New Species on Bluesky (@newspeciespodcast.bsky.social) and Instagram (@NewSpeciesPodcast) and “like” the podcast page on Facebook (www.facebook.com/NewSpeciesPodcast).Music in this podcast is "No More (Instrumental)," by HaTom (https://fanlink.to/HaTom)If you have questions or feedback about this podcast, please e-mail us at NewSpeciesPodcast@gmail.comIf you would like to support this podcast and enjoy bonus episodes, please consider doing so at https://www.patreon.com/NewSpeciesPod
This week, we're heading down to New Orleans circa 1958 to revisit the soundtrack and recording sessions for the iconic musical drama "King Creole." The Dixieland aesthetic gave Elvis an opportunity experiment, melding his now-signature rock and roll style with a small jazz ensemble, creating a soundtrack LP that had a distinct sound all its own. Although few outtakes remain, the songwriter demos for nearly the entire soundtrack provide insight on how Elvis and the band further developed such classic songs as "Trouble," "Hard Headed Woman" and "Crawfish" into the final forms heard in the film. Bec also takes the opportunity chat a bit about her appreciation for the movie itself, highlighting some of her takeaways from her most recent viewing, and posing questions about the Michael Curtiz-directed film as one of Elvis' best starring roles. For Song of the Week, Justin provides a little insight on what influences may have led Elvis to experimenting at home in the mid-1960s with an early 1950s pop ballad, "My Heart Cries for You." Finally, Bec rounds out the episode with a reflection on the intimacy of the underrated "I Miss You" which was also a home recording of sorts - as it was recorded professionally by RCA in Elvis' Palm Springs home! If you enjoy TCBCast, please consider supporting us with a donation at Patreon.com/TCBCast. Your support allows us to continue to provide thoughtful, provocative, challenging and well-researched perspectives on Elvis's career, his peers and influences, and his cultural impact and legacy.

Teddy "Double Wide" McRainey makes his living seasonally slinging crawfish and boiled peanuts in Mississippi--to include a couple top-selling flavors a life-long Mississippi boiled peanut fan like myself had never imagined. Having eaten more crawfish in an 8-minute contest down in New Orleans than most people could--or would--consume in a weekend, he's also training for Guiness Book of World Records. But that's all now. Back then he was slinging something else and shares his story today so that others might learn from his mistake. Jase is left on the hook by Uncle Si for a birthday request that doesn't come cheap, and Zach's upchuck reflex is nearly activated again by a bathroom disaster in the Duck Commander offices. But the conversation turns deeper as the guys break down what happens when people try to live disconnected from their Creator, such as the biosphere experiment in Arizona. They challenge the common belief that faith is just about getting to heaven, making the case that we're called to something much bigger: living as the place where God dwells, growing into spiritual maturity. On this episode of Warden's Watch, we head deep into Louisiana with Captain Will Roberts and Sergeant Terry Hicks — two wildlife agents who bring the state's culture, cases, and Cajun humor to life. From crawfish wars and cooking secrets to big-game patrols, wild night‑hunting busts, and the state's legendary boat poker runs, Will and Terry share stories that reveal a Louisiana most of us have only imagined. It's part culture lesson, part law‑enforcement adventure, and entirely Louisiana.
