In this enlightening episode of "Father and Joe," hosts Father Boniface Hicks and Joe Rockey delve into the profound world of papal encyclicals and their significance in modern society. The conversation explores the importance of taking the teachings of God and applying them to contemporary issues through the lens of encyclicals, all while understanding their hierarchy in relation to divine revelation found in the Bible.Father Boniface elaborates on how encyclicals are structured to build upon one another, providing a rich tapestry of Catholic doctrine that demands thoughtful engagement. The episode touches on various well-known encyclicals, including Pope Francis' "Laudato Si," and discusses the layered complexities and common misconceptions surrounding these papal documents. The hosts address the broader purpose of encyclicals, which is to teach and integrate theological insights into everyday life while steering clear of simplistic interpretations that can dilute their deeper meanings. The episode transitions into an engaging discussion about Pope Leo XIV, a figure distinguished by his unique blend of North American, Roman, and South American experiences. Father Boniface highlights how Pope Leo brings a global perspective to the papacy, traversing cultural and ecclesiastical divides. His diverse background in administration, pastoral ministry, and missionary work positions him as a "bridge builder" in a world often fragmented by tribalism.Listeners gain insight into the authoritative role of the Pope as the Vicar of Christ, tasked with teaching, governing, and sanctifying the Church. Father Boniface shares personal reflections and stories that illustrate the Pope's profound influence as a spiritual leader and teacher, continually shaping the Church's mission to nourish the faithful through authentic doctrine and the sacraments.Tune in to this episode for a rich, nuanced exploration of the papal role in guiding the Church, the layers within Church teachings, and how the humility and humanity of its leaders continue to inspire believers worldwide. The dialogue wraps up with an invitation for listeners to engage further by sharing their questions and feedback via email.Tags:Father Boniface, Joe Rockey, Catholic Church, Encyclicals, Papal Role, Spiritual Direction, Pope Leo XIV, Encyclical Hierarchy, Catholic Doctrine, Divine Revelation, Laudato Si, Rerum Novarum, Church Teachings, Pope Francis, Papal Authority, Vicar of Christ, Bridge Builder, Global Perspective, Catholic Podcast, Spiritual Insight, Theology, Faith Exploration, Spiritual Growth, Relationship with God, Missionary Work, Pastoral Ministry, Religious Orders, Augustinians, Church History, Canon Law, Universal Church, Pope as Teacher, Papal Influence, Moral Doctrine, Deepening Faith, Sacred Tradition, Biblical TeachingsHashtags:#FatherAndJoe, #CatholicPodcast, #Encyclicals, #ChurchTeachings, #PopeLeoXIV, #SpiritualDirection, #VicarOfChrist, #CatholicDoctrine, #DivineRevelation, #PapalAuthority, #LaudatoSi, #FaithJourney, #GlobalChurch, #TheologyTalk, #FaithAndLife, #ChristianPodcast, #PopeFrancis, #FaithExploration, #SpiritualGrowth, #PapalInsights, #CatholicFaith, #SpiritualWisdom, #DoctrineAndFaith, #BridgeBuilder, #Augustinians, #UniversalChurch, #MissionaryLife, #FaithInAction, #FaithAndCommunity, #SacredTradition, #FaithfulWitness, #BiblicalLearning, #MoralAuthority, #ChristianUnity, #PapalTeachings, #FaithDevelopment, #CommunityOfBelievers, #DeepeningFaith

Two brothers and two sisters found a secret door in the back of a closet that led them to a magical world called Narnia. It's a world with fantastic creatures and mythical beasts! Talking animals, giants, dwarves, dragons, & unicorns abound. In the land of Narnia, the children join a magical lion named Aslan in the fight against the evil white witch. In the story, the Lion Aslan is a representation of symbol for Jesus Christ. The Lion Aslan sacrifices himself to save a young naughty boy. Everyone is so sad. But then Aslan comes back to life. Does that sound like or remind you of Jesus? In the story, Aslan the Lion gives each of the siblings gifts so they can win the fight against evil. The oldest brother Peter receives a sword and a shield, The oldest sister Susan receives a bow and arrows and a horn, And the littlest sister Lucy is given a bottle of healing tonic. A magical medicine. Eventually, as the children use their special gifts from Aslan the Lion, they defeat the evil white witch and the land of Narnia is saved! It's a really neat story! You should read it with your parents and see if you can recognize ways the lion is the same as Jesus! Well one way the Lion Aslan is like Jesus is that Aslan gave each of the children special gifts. Did you know that our Heavenly Father and Jesus have also given each of YOU special gifts? God gives every person spiritual gifts. That means He blesses us with talents through the Holy Ghost! Do you guys know what your spiritual gifts are? Are you listening to this podcast with an adult or someone else right now? If you are, ask them what your spiritual gifts are! Or if you are listening by yourself, you can pray and ask Heavenly Father. If you don't know what your spiritual gifts are, you can pray to Heavenly Father to find out! You can also work on your spiritual gifts to make them stronger! So why do we have different spiritual gifts? Heavenly Father gives us spiritual gifts to bless others!Spiritual gifts are blessings or abilities that are given by the power of the Holy Ghost. God gives at least one of these gifts to every faithful member of the Church. As you receive these gifts, they will strengthen and bless you individually and help you serve others.Talk referenced is: Elder Juan Pablo Villar's message “Exercising Our Spiritual Muscles” You're listening to Come Follow Me Kids! This week we learn about preparing for the spiritual harvest and working together to bring others to Christ. It's a reminder that sharing the gospel brings joy, blessings, and the opportunity to make a real difference.I am called to be a witness of Jesus Christ.Whether or not you have a formal calling as a missionary, you can be a witness of Jesus Christ “at all times, and in all things, and in all places”If I build my life on the Savior's gospel, I will not fall.I should focus more on the things of God than the things of the earth.Parley P. Pratt had been a member of the Church for about a month when he was called “into the wilderness” to preach the gospel (Doctrine and Covenants 32:2). Thomas B. Marsh had been a member for even less time than that when he was told, “The hour of your mission is come” Orson Pratt, Edward Partridge, and many others had likewise barely been baptized when their mission calls came. Perhaps there's a lesson in this pattern for us today: if you know enough to accept the restored gospel by baptism, you know enough to share it with others.Fun podcast for kidsFun Book of Mormon podcast for kids Game podcast

Armor of God podcast for KidsArmor of God podcast for childrenAll Things Must Be Done in Order”Doctrine and Covenants 27–28The armor of god is what this episode mainly focuses on. Revelation was still a relatively new concept for the Saints as the Restoration continued to unfold. Early Church members knew that the Prophet Joseph Smith could receive revelation for the Church. But could others? Questions like this became critical when Hiram Page, one of the Eight Witnesses of the gold plates, believed he had received revelations for the Church. Many faithful Saints believed that these revelations were from God. The Lord responded by teaching that in His Church “all things must be done in order” (Doctrine and Covenants 28:13). This week we will learn this story and learn that only the prophet can receive revelation for the church. The scriptures teach that we should put on the “whole armor” of God (see Ephesians 6:11–18 and D&C 27:15–18). When we study the scriptures and pray, it's like we put on armor that helps keep us safe.Helmet of SalvationA helmet protects the head. We keep our mind safe when we follow Jesus and do what He wants us to do.Shield of FaithFaith in Jesus Christ is like a shield of protection. When we believe in Jesus and try to be like Him, we can make good choices, even when things are hard.Breastplate of RighteousnessThe breastplate protects the heart. When we love God with all our heart, we try to keep His commandments. We are blessed when we choose the right.Etc. You're listening to Come Follow Me Kids! A Come Follow Me Podcast. The Lord said, "The song of the righteous is a prayer unto me." As we sing hymns and primary songs, it's like a prayer to Heavenly Father. March 17–23: “Seek for the Things of a Better World”Doctrine and Covenants 23–26Satan clearly was fighting against the restoration of Gods church. Not only was there an angry mob yelling at Emma Smith while she was getting baptized, but that same day, Joseph was arrested twice even though he did nothing wrong. This must have been scary for Emma.In all this opposition, how could Emma know that she was doing the right thing? The same way we can know it—through revelation from the Lord. the Lord counseled, "Be patient in afflictions, for thou shalt have many; but endure them, for, lo, I am with thee, even unto the end of thy days.Did you know the Lord called Emma an Elect Lady? "Elect" means chosen, selected, or set apart. The Lord had chosen Emma to do certain things. He also has chosen you to help his work too! And he will give you power and blessings to do so. there is something pretty amazing about doctrine and covenants 25 that we read this week. This week we learn that Joseph Smith needed to publish the Book of Mormon, and in order to do that Martin Harris needed to mortgage his farm: From saints:Joseph knew the Lord wanted him to publish the Book of Mormon and spread its message far and wide. Publishing a book as long as the Book of Mormon would also not be cheap. They went first to Egbert Grandin, a printer in Palmyra who was the same age as Joseph. he wanted to be paid $3,000 to print and bind five thousand copies before he even started work. To put this into perspective, Joseph had paid $200 for his entire home and farm in Harmony, so $3,000 was an enormous amount of money.Martin had already promised to help pay for the printing, but to come up with that kind of money, he realized he might need to mortgage his farm.He had one of the best farms in the area. If he mortgaged his land, he risked losing it. Martin told Joseph his concerns and asked him to seek a revelation for him. In response, the Savior spoke of His sacrifice to do His Father's will, Thou shalt not covet thine own property,” the Lord said, “but impart it freely to the printing of the Book of Mormon.” The book contained the true word of God, the Lord assured Martin, and it would help others believe the gospel.Should Martin use his farm to help get the Book of Mormon printed? give a thumbs up if you think he should and a thumbs down if you think he shouldn't.Although his neighbors would not understand his decision, Martin obeyed the Lord and mortgaged his farm to guarantee payment.Children will learn:Jesus Christ obeyed Heavenly Father, even when it was hard.God's blessings are greater than the treasures of the earth.Jesus Christ suffered so that I can repent and come unto Him.

God tells us that his joy is great when we repent! And if we help others to come unto Christ and repent, we will have that joy too! 13 And how great is his joy in the soul that repenteth!14 Wherefore, you are called to cry repentance unto this people.15 And if it so be that you should labor all your days in crying repentance unto this people, and bring, save it be one soul unto me, how great shall be your joy with him in the kingdom of my Father!16 And now, if your joy will be great with one soul that you have brought unto me into the kingdom of my Father, how great will be your joy if you should bring many souls unto me!you will always be valuable to Heavenly Father! He knows you. He knows your name. You are precious to Him! But here on earth the adversary tries to make us forget that. There are many different ways people try to measure a person's worth. How talented is someone, how educated are they? How much money do they make? How beautiful are they? But in God's eyes, our worth is much simpler. We are his children and we are important to him! “Remember the worth of souls is great in the sight of God” This explains so much of what God does and why He does it. Why did He instruct Joseph and Oliver to establish the Church of Jesus Christ in our day? Because the worth of souls is great. Why does He “command all men everywhere to repent” and send Apostles to preach repentance? Because the worth of souls is great. And why did Jesus Christ suffer “death in the flesh” and “the pain of all men”? Say it with me!Because the worth of souls is great. Come Follow MeCome Follow Me For Kids“Upon You My Fellow Servants”Doctrine and Covenants 12–17; Joseph Smith—History 1:66–75The Aaronic Priesthood Is Restored John the Baptist visits Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdry and restores the priesthood on earth. This week we are going to learn that the keys of the priesthood are a super important a part of the restoration of the gospel of Jesus Christ. Priesthood keys are given to act in God's name, by his power and authority. For example God has given us keys to baptize and bless the sacrament Because these keys were restored to God's church, we enjoy many blessings made through covenants that bring us closer to Jesus Christ.Joseph and Oliver worked hard translating the gold plates into english for many days. They came to the part of the Book of Mormon where Jesus Christ appeared to the Nephites. They read that Jesus gave Nephi the priesthood power and authority to baptize. Joseph and Oliver knew that the authority to baptize was not on the earth in their day.Joseph and Oliver wanted to know more about the authority to baptize, could anyone do it? How did it work? They walked to the trees near Joseph's house. They prayed and asked God about the authority to baptize in Christ's name. While they were praying, an angel descended from heaven in a cloud of light. The angel was John the Baptist, John the Baptist had the Aaronic Priesthood—God's authorityto baptize. Jesus was baptized to set anexample for us, and John was the person that baptized Jesus! Now as an angel, John the Baptist put his hands on Joseph and Oliver's heads and said, "Upon you my fellow servants, in the name of Messiah, I confer the Priesthood of Aaron, which holds the keys of the ministering of angels, and of the gospel of repentance, and of baptism by immersion for the remission of sins." The power and authority of the Aaronic Priesthood was restored to the earth! Why did an angel need to come and give it to them? Because no one on earth had that power. John the Baptist then told Joseph and Oliver they should baptize each other, so they wentto the River and and were baptized. They both felt the power of the Holy Ghost and after this, understanding the scriptures was way easier! And now, because the priesthood authority is back on the earth, we can be baptized like Jesus was, repent from bad choices, and receive the power of the Holy Ghost! This weeks primary podcast is about: Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdry receive revelation NOT to retranslate the plates from which the manuscript was stolen. It might make sense to retranslate that portion, but the Lord saw something they could not: their enemies were planning to alter the words on those pages to cast doubt on Joseph's inspired work. God had a plan to avoid that problem and keep the work moving forward. Thousands of years earlier, God inspired Nephi to write a second record that covered the same time period “for a wise purpose in Him” (1 Nephi 9:5).“My wisdom,” the Lord said to Joseph, “is greater than the cunning of the devil” (Doctrine and Covenants 10:43). That's a reassuring message in a day like ours, when the adversary is intensifying his efforts to weaken faith. Like Joseph, we can be “faithful and continue on” in the work God has called us to do (verse 3). Then we will find that He has already provided a way so that “the gates of hell shall not prevail” against us (verse 69).The Lord's “wisdom is greater than the cunning of the devil.” Nephi didn't know why he was inspired to make two sets of records of his people. And Mormon didn't know why he was inspired to include the second set with the gold plates. But both prophets trusted that God had “a wise purpose” (1 Nephi 9:5; Words of Mormon 1:7).We will also learn about Divine Design reading from accounts in Elder Ronald A. Rasband's message “By Divine Design”—they might bring examples to your mind (Ensign or Liahona, Nov. 2017, 55–57).And we read from: The Lord's Hand”President M. Some audio was taken from the Talking Scriptures Podcast which we highly recommend! Examples from this podcast:Heavenly Father called Joseph Smith to help Him do His work. Let's listen to what important things angel Moroni came to teach Joseph Smith. Can you pretend to be Joseph while you are listening to this story? The next four years would be a time of preparation for Joseph. Part of that preparation would be the purifying of his heart in order to receive the precious items, the golden plates and the rim and thumin. Here's what happened next to Joseph. Joseph would bring forth the Book of Mormon; we are invited to share its message. Joseph would receive priesthood keys to turn the hearts of the children to their fathers; we can now receive ordinances for our ancestors in temples. Joseph was told of prophecies that would soon be fulfilled; we are called to help fulfill these prophecies. As we take part in God's work, we can expect to face opposition and even persecution, just as the Prophet did. But we can also have faith that the Lord will make us instruments in His hands, just as He did for Joseph.

This week we are learning about the first vision of Joseph Smith. January 13–19: “I Saw a Pillar of Light”Joseph Smith History Joseph Smith is the Prophet of the Restoration.Joseph Smith was prepared to be a prophet of God.We will also learn from Joseph Smiths first vision in the sacred grove, a pattern of prayer that we can follow to get answers ourselves. WE can follow the pattern Joseph showed us during his life, a pattern of prayer! Joseph said he was twelve when he started thinking about which church he should join. He had the first vision when he was 14. So this wasn't a question he figured the answer to in a day, a week, or a month. For our pattern of prayer, to be like Joseph, we should know that sometimes answers to our questions can take time. Joseph tells us when he was trying to decide which church to join, he was so young that he could not come to any certain conclusion and needed wisdom from god since he did not know how to act. For our pattern of prayer, to be like Joseph, we need to make sure we gather all the information we can and then go to God. Joseph said he spent time in serious reflection. When we need help, do we spent time pondering solutions? If you want help on a test, you've got to study, - you can't just pray for an A and not do your part and expect God to help. Joseph said he attended all the different meetings as often as he could. He was doing his divine homework! Joseph made a decision, he chose which church he thought was best, then he that decision to God to see if it was right. Often Heavenly Father expects us to make the best choice we can and then ask him to confirm if it is the right choice. Joseph went somewhere where he could be unrushed and uninterrupted with God.If you follow this pattern of prayer, and try to be like Joseph, we testify that you will be able to say the same thing to your mom that Joseph said to his right after he went home after having had the first vision…I have learned for myself Remember in the beginning Joseph didn't know what to do? He was so confused. But in studying and praying like Joseph we testify you will be able to say all is well, i know for myself. Some background music was written by Daniel Sacks and taken from the church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints hymn book.

This week we are studying The Restoration of the Fulness of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Our prophet decided that to celebrate the restoration of the gospel and the first vision given to Joseph smith, instead of building a monument out of granite or stone, he would build one out of words. The monument of words the first presidency created is titled “The Restoration of the Fulness of the Gospel of Jesus Christ: A Bicentennial Proclamation to the World.” It's a monument not just to the First Vision but also to everything Jesus Christ has done—and is still doing—since then. Children will learn these concepts:“God loves His children in every nation of the world.”The Restoration began with an answer to a question.Jesus Christ has restored His Church.“The heavens are open.”“Heavenly messengers came to instruct Joseph Smith”

A Note from James:Oh my gosh, every time, this is the second time I've talked to Gladys McGarey. Last year she was 102 years old, this year she's 103 years old. She wrote a book, The Well Lived Life: A 102-Year-Old Doctor's Six Secrets to Health and Happiness at Every Age, and it's coming out in paperback.  And every time I read this book, I've read it twice now, and I talk to her, I almost feel like crying, and I don't really know why. It's almost as if she was born with wisdom, but then kept even growing for the next 102 years. Like she drove a Ford Model A car, and now she's talking to me through Zoom on the internet and going on podcasts, writing books. She was a doctor her whole life. She's been all over the world. She's had so many amazing experiences and also has suffered, of course, much loss. I don't think you're going to live to be that age and not have an incredible amount of loss that you have to learn to move past and still be positive and still live every day to its fullest. She had, she was riding a tricycle and it threw her off into the street and she broke three ribs. And she's now totally healed and on the podcast. I really look up to this woman a lot. Here's Gladys McGarey. We have a great conversation about all sorts of things and she's the author of The Well Lived Life. Episode Description:In this profound and enlightening conversation, James revisits the remarkable life of Dr. Gladys McGarey, who, at 103 years old, shares her 'six secrets to health and happiness at every age' from her book 'The Well Lived Life'. Reflecting on a life rich with experiences, from caring for patients across the globe to handling personal loss and surviving a recent tricycle accident, Dr. McGarey embodies resilience and wisdom. She discusses the importance of facing challenges, the transformative power of love and life, and how her encounters with notable figures like Milton Erickson shaped her understanding of human potential. Dr. McGarey's perspectives on aging, happiness, and living a meaningful life offer invaluable insights, emphasizing the significance of community, love, and choosing one's path with intention.Episode Summary:00:00 Celebrating a Century of Wisdom with Gladys McGarey02:04 The Resilience of a 103-Year-Old: Tricycle Accidents and Recovery05:11 Finding Humanity and Overcoming Loss06:04 The Power of Love and Life: A Personal Journey14:44 Exploring the Mind's Influence on Reality16:31 The Magic of Connection: A Story of a Plant and Dementia25:39 Embracing Life's Adventures and the Quest for True Humanity31:29 The Philosophy of Life, Love, and Humanity36:07 Navigating Life's Challenges with Optimism37:47 The Power of Choice in Overcoming Adversity40:39 Turning Pain into Purpose: A Personal Journey41:47 Action as a Catalyst for Change42:23 The Interplay of Life and Love44:13 Embracing Aging with Grace and Wisdom46:33 The Impact of Stress on Health and Well-being47:47 Finding Meaning and Joy Amidst Loss50:42 The Importance of Memory and Presence56:42 Exploring Spiritual Growth and Self-Discovery01:02:05 The Role of Technology and Community in Modern Life01:06:32 Reflecting on a Life Well Lived ------------What do YOU think of the show? Description Since the introduction of missionary work in 1830, Saints have used a variety of tools and practices to share the good news of the gospel and bring people unto Christ. Some of the most common methods have included standing on a collapsible soapbox, knocking on doors, using flannel and flip charts to illustrate lessons, sharing slideshows and videos, and utilizing a primary guide, like Preach My Gospel, to teach prepared discussions. The recent introduction of social media and the use of smartphones are two of the latest tools reserved for the youth of this generation as they engage in missionary service. President Harold B. Lee taught that “the principles of the gospel of Jesus Christ are divine. Nobody changes the principles and [doctrine] of the Church except the Lord by revelation. But methods change as the inspired direction comes to those who preside at a given time.” In this episode Dr. Scott L. Howell, assistant teaching professor of Church history and doctrine, discusses the recent shifts in methodology for the gathering of Israel. He provides insight on how the youth might craft their digital dossiers prior to their service, details safeguards for using technology before, during, and after missionary service, and previews a number of phone apps and Church resources for engaging with the gospel online. In melding traditional and modern approaches, we can further the reach of this marvelous work and wonder.   Publications: ·      “‘Knocking on People's Computers': Missionary Work in the Digital Age” (Religious Educator, 23.3, 2022) ·      “Preparing Missionaries in the Digital Age” (Liahona, February 2023) ·      “Same Purpose, New Approach: A Case Study of the North Dakota Bismarck Mission using Social Media during COVID-19” (BYU ScholarsArchive, Faculty Publications, 6153, 2022) ·      “‘How Beautiful Are the Feet': The Use of Footnotes in General Conference Reports” (Religious Educator, 24.2, 2023) ·      “The Diachronic Usage of Exclamation Marks Across the Major Book of Mormon Editions” (Interpreter, 53, 2022)   Click here to learn more about Scott L.
