In this episode, we sit down with Gabriel Minnikin, one of Nova Scotia's accomplished and versatile musicians. Gabe has played alongside some of the biggest names in Canadian music, from Blue Rodeo (where he played accordion) to Bahamas, Grammy Award-winning Gordie Sampson, Buck 65, and Kinley Dowling, he's even changed a string on Travis Good's (the Sadies) Gretsch guitar. But beyond his musical achievements, Gabe is a kind individual with a thoughtful perspective on life and creativity. We dive into Gabe's creative process, his experiences living abroad, and the personal journey of getting sober. Despite being an introvert at heart, Gabe shares how he finds joy in performing live with his band, revealing the quiet power of music and performance in expressing what words sometimes can't. Gabe's latest album, Anne Lorraine, is a heartfelt tribute to his new wife, and in a beautiful twist, they held their wedding on the very day of the album's release! In this episode, Gabe talks about the inspiration behind his new tunes, takes us down memory lane with stories of “the Guthries,” and reflects on how even the most introverted person can speak volumes through their music. The Grammy-award winning songwriter, and Big Pond native, recently signed an exclusive worldwide publishing deal with Sheltered Music in Nashville.
In this episode, I speak with arguably one of the most successful songwriters in today's music industry, Gordie Sampson. With many number one and chart-topping hits and awards (even a Grammy!) under his belt, Gordie came from humbled beginnings on Cape Breton Island and worked his way to the top of the music industry in Nashville, Tennessee. A musician, songwriter, producer, performer, and so much more, Gordie is truly a force to be reckoned with and is in very high demand for his talents! One of Gordie's most notable accomplishments as a songwriter is the multi-award-winning song, “Jesus Take the Wheel,” performed by Carrie Underwood, which awarded him and their team a Grammy Award in 2006. Gordie has written songs with and for some of the biggest stars in the music industry, including Keith Urban, Willie Nelson, LeAnn Rimes, Faith Hill, Jake Owen, Blake Shelton and many others. On top of all of this, in 2010, Gordie launched The Gordie Sampson Songcamp, where he and other prominent musicians and members of the music industry from across the globe give young Nova Scotian songwriters mentorship, tools and insider tracks to take their careers to new heights, and knowledge to take their skills to new heights. When the pandemic hit, much like all of us, he needed to adapt his career to a more virtual workflow. He packed himself and his family up and came back to his hometown here in Cape Breton to continue working virtually, right here from his home. Its conversations like these that I know will be good for your soul and will remind us all about the importance of hard work, believing in yourself, and reaching for those big dreams that you have been thinking about.
Aaron from The Washboard Union joins Jackie on air to talk about their brand new single "Never Run Out Of Road.""On their new album Everbound, The Washboard Union secure their status as one of Canada's preeminent country bands with 10 songs that celebrate the simple joy of life. The follow-up to their 2018 album What We're Made Of—which earned the trio their first JUNO Award for Breakthrough Group Of The Year—Everbound keeps the good times rolling with an irresistible blend of roof-raising anthems and poignant ballads. The impeccable three-part harmony and top-notch musicianship once again displayed by Aaron Grain, Chris Duncombe and David Roberts is only one aspect of The Washboard Union's appeal. With about 30 songs in the running to make Everbound's final cut, the group was determined to offer only their best material, aided by the keen ears of Nashville producers Gordie Sampson, Thomas “Tawgs” Salter and producer Karen Kosowski, who also co-wrote the album's uplifting first single “Country Thunder.” Accompanied by a video starring puppet versions of Aaron, Chris and David, its quick rise up Billboard's Canada Country chart made the song their highest charting single to date. There are sure to be many more converts in the wake of Everbound as The Washboard Union continue to prove that creativity is not limited by the use of traditional instruments. Although they will still be called country, The Washboard Union will always sound exactly like who they are."
For as far back as history can tell, inhabitants of Cape Breton Island have found sustenance in our fisheries, our forests, our coal, Steel, and of course tourism. These industries have brought people to Cape Breton from around the world or sent a little bit of Cape Breton to them. But, if we were considering the island’s greatest exports, well that may come as a bit of a surprise. An unassuming Cape Bretoner, with a smile much bigger than his ego, is responsible for some of the world's biggest songs by some of the world's biggest artists. It's fair to say that Gordie Sampson was able to send a taste of Cape Breton Island to more people than our natural industries ever could and he has the Grammys to show for it. After achieving success in Canada as a solo performer, Gordie found his place in writing for others. As it all turned out, his ability to connect clever lyrics with traditional Celtic inspired melody has made him a go to for country music's biggest stars. To name just a few, Gordie’s songs were recorded by: WIllie Nelson, Faith Hill, Keith Urban, Trisha Yearwood, Luke Bryan, Martina MacBride, Lady Antebellum, Brad Paisley, Lee Ann Rymes, Miley Cyrus, Bon Jovi, and perhaps his biggest... the Grammy award winning song by Carrie Underwood 'Jesus Take the Wheel". So needless to say, Gordie has unique insight into the music business and a hell of a lot of stories. In this episode of Nighttime, I'm proud to be joined by Cape Breton's hit maker Gordie Sampson.
