You get to a certain age, you're supposed to retire. But some people — idiots like me — stay connected to a process that gave me a living, a good life for my family, and great experiences and friends. You can't ask for much more in life. But one thing I always wanted to do was go motorcycling in Europe. What was supposed to be an adventure of a lifetime also allowed me to reconnect with some interesting people from my screen-printing life. I guess it's true…you can drop the squeegee in the ink, but you can never leave it there.
Send us a textLangston Hughes called Jessie Redmon Fauset “the midwife of the Harlem Renaissance” with good reason. As literary editor at The Crisis magazine from 1919 until 1926, Fauset discovered and championed some of the most important Black writers of the early 20th century. Her own novels contributed to The New Negro Movement's cultural examination of race, class and gender through the lens of women's experiences. Fauset's 1928 novel Plum Bun was republished this spring by Quite Literally Books, a new publishing venture that reissues books by American women authors. The founders, Bremond Berry MacDougall and Lisa Endo Cooper, join us to discuss their mission and take a closer look at Fauset's life and work.Mentioned in this episode:Quite Literally BooksPlum Bun by Jessie Redmon FausetThe Pink House by Nelia GardnerThe Home-Maker by Dorothy Canfield FisherLost Ladies of Lit Episode No. 9 on Dorothy Canfield FisherLost Ladies of Lit Episode No. 140 on Zora Neale HurstonPersephone BooksVirago BooksCita PressThe Crisis magazine“What is Racial Passing?” on PBS's The Origin of Everything“The Dinner Party That Started the Harlem Renaissance” by Veronica Chambers and Michelle May-CurryLangston HughesJean ToomerArna BontempsCountee CullenGwendolyn BennettW.E.B. Oban Scottish Island Adventures - Oban - with hosts Coinneach Macleod, the Hebridean Baker, singer-songwriter Natalie Galloway and with guest Peter MacQueen Oban Oban - meaning ‘the little bay' in Scottish Gaelic - is a historic harbour town nestled on Scotland's west coast and is known as the gateway to the Hebrides. The town is just a three hour journey by train, bus or car from Glasgow and is the starting point for many CalMac island adventures. Dunollie Castle Sitting on a vantage point over the entrance to Oban bay, Dunnollie Castle once guarded the town's important harbour. The castle is the seat of clan MacDougall and its present day ruins offer a glimpse into the history of the area. It is a landmark easily spotted when sailing into Oban from the islands. Seafood Shack Oban is renowned for its seafood and the seafood shack at the marina is a must-visit. The shacks are situated right beside the CalMac departure lounge. Sample fresh lobster, crab, scallops and more next to the boats that brought them while keeping an eye on your ferry! Thank you for listening to the Caledonian MacBrayne podcast. Hello Seattle Mariners fans! Evan James and Anders Jorstad are here on Wednesday afternoon, May 15th to talk Mariners after a series win over the Kansas City Royals. Julio's bat seems to be heating up, but is he all the way there? What do we make of Mitch, Mitch and Jorge? The Return of Canzone is here, but how will playing time shake out? Where would we be comfortable adding a trade piece/who would we be comfortable sitting to accommodate the trade? How close are Locklear and Young getting to the show? Is Felnin Celestin primed to break out? Shout out to our sponsor MacDougall bats! Hello Seattle Mariners fans! Evan James, Zach Mason and Anders Jorstad are here, weak in the knees in the aftermath of the greatest rap beef of all time to talk about…The Mariners? The Mariners! Walter rolled through the Houston Astros last night en route to a 5-0 shutout win with B Money on the rubber this afternoon. While the offense continues to be a bit limp with the stick, there remains much euphoria in sitting atop the AL West. Should we even expect the rotation to regress at all? How concerning are Julio's ongoing struggles? Who' is cold vs Who is cooked? How are the uber-prospects faring down on the farm? Do you have the gift of chicken sexing? Which of the 4 (currently released, but stay tuned) Drake diss tracks is your favorite? Shout out to our sponsor MacDougall bats! The album's name is a nod to a lyrical phrase shared both by the album track “Shambling”, as well in Thin Lizzy's “The Boys Are Back In Town”. The Thin Lizzy reference is one that always resonated with MacDougall who felt the line “guess who just got back today, them wild eyed boys that had been away” summed up the fried feeling of arriving home after weeks on tour. The collection of songs that make up Wild Eyes reach across genre boundaries to showcase the technical versatility and emotional insight that MacDougall has refined over the past two decades as he performed everywhere from punk squats to headlining mainstages at Austin City Limits and Lollapalooza. The constant is the honesty and vulnerability in both MacDougall's DIY ethics and approach to music, facts that are laid bare on every note of Wild Eyes. To bring Wild Eyes to life, Broken Gold enlisted acclaimed engineer Stuart Sikes (The Walkmen, Modest Mouse, The White Stripes) to track and mix the record, while the legendary Howie Weinberg (Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins) provided the mastering polish.Wild Eyes will be available on limited edition vinyl on April 26th, 2024. This young ripper is quickly making a name for himself. He's old school, letting his riding do the talking. Recently, he was hand-selected by the legend Peter Line himself to ride for Forum Snowboards. You're gonna be hearing this name a lot more in the future. Tune in to hear from the Grand Prairie, Alberta native! Enjoy.
Hello Seattle Mariners fans! John Trupin, Evan James and Grant Bronsdon are here on April 21st 2024 to talk suddenly red hot Mariners before the double header closes out the weekend. Last night, on an audacious 4/20 the Mariners decided to roll up and smoke the Rockies in a blizzard. Finally getting deep double digits hits (4 hits for Cal and Julio!) propelled the offense to look more alive than they have all season. Your eyes do not deceive you, the team had indeed played better offensively and defensively of late. Where did the suspect fielding go? Has the offense found its grove or is this a strength of opponent mirage that will fade in Texas? The MATM crew takes a smattering of listener questions from Twitter and tries to sus out the forest from the trees in a time when small samples begin to crystalize as trends. Hello Seattle Mariners fans! Anders Jorstad, Kate Preusser and Zach Mason are here on April 19th 2024 to talk baseball in lieu of this afternoons game which was postponed till Sunday in Colorado. A series sweep against the Cincinnati Reds has spirits raised once again as the team looks to get back to .500, even lead the division! Slow starts for the Houston Astros and Texas Rangers have left the American League West wide open even if it is only the third week of April. First up, Jonatan Clase is here! Kate gushes about her friend and prospect whom the podcast has fondly watched as a professional. Colt Emerson is on the injured list, what does this mean for his season? Hello Seattle Mariners fans! Evan James, Kate Preusser and Zach Mason are here on April 13th 2024 to talk all things baseball. The topic of the day is pitching, pitching, pitching. Bryce Miller impressed in his Friday start against the Cubs, but can Emerson Hancock flip the script and hold the line? Can Miller's new found windup hitch become a weapon of deception? Hello Seattle Mariners fans! John Trupin, Evan James and Anders Jorstad are here on April 7th to talk about the 4-5 Seattle Mariners. The team has played just enough to give everyone a full taste of what's to come, so how are we feeling? Have Urias and Polanco figured it out at the plate? Is Zavala as bad as he has looked so far? Will the Mariners figure out the off-speed stuff? Do they even need to? How impressed are we with Emerson Hancock's first start? What's the deal with all these pitching injuries? Dr Hannah Macdougall just got a new running leg. Apparently, it's fast. Which is good. Hannah is an elite athlete, dual Paralympian and Bronze Medalist, Inclusion Advocate, and has completed a PhD in Well-Being. Apart from being a world-class swimmer, cyclist and triathlete, she's also an educator, high-performance expert and great story-teller. She's also a little inappropriate (my favourite part). Hello Seattle Mariners fans! Zach Mason, Evan James and here with Kate Preusser on April 3rd to dissect the early returns of the 3-4 Mariners. A forgettable day on offense, defense and from stalwart George Kirby renders discussion of the immediate unpalatable, so the crew takes a more holistic view. What do we make of the early strikeout issues? Are these ghosts of 2022 coming home to roost or a whole new strain? Will Luis Urias or Dom Canzone shake out of their deep funk? But most important of all, what has gone right so far that we can feel good about? The answers: Julio walk-off wins, Bryce Miller's new pitch and the specific role of Josh Rojas (current Mariners ERA leader). Shout out to our sponsor MacDougall bats! Hello Seattle Mariners fans! Zach Mason, Anders Jorstad are here with Kate Preusser, back from spring Training to detail her firsthand account of the new look Mariners. It's Sunday March 24th and the final cuts are just around the corner. How impressive has Jonatan Clase been and how long will he stay in the minors? Will he be the backup CF and pinch run this season or will the team give him a more prominent role? Has Dominic Canzone won the starting outfield job over Luke Raley? And what do we make of Mitch Hanigers resurgent spring statistics? All the details from camp are coming your way. Shout out to our sponsor MacDougall bats! Hello Seattle Mariners fans! Evan James, John Trupin and Zach Mason are here on Wednesday March 13th to feel extreme relief that Bryan Woo was merely given extra rest instead of scratched. Despite making some legit contact off of Yamamoto this afternoon, the Gregory Santos injury news is the talk of the town. What does his timeline look like? Will this necessitate another addition to the quickly thinning bullpen? Do Tai Pete, Lazaro Montes and Cole Young look as good as it seems? How would we make a quick $4,500? Hello Seattle Mariners fans! John Trupin, Evan James, Kate Preusser and Anders Jorstad here on Friday March 8th, to languish the temporary loss of Noelvi Marte and talk Mariners as Emerson Hancock gets rocked in Arizona. We talk the mystery of Urias, the myriad of options at third base, both real and imaginary. We find the difference between Trammel and Marlowe and make a prediction about who makes the team out of camp. We dig far, far too deep into the bullpen pile and examine the final competitors angling for that last, elusive roster spot. Shout out to our sponsor MacDougall bats! Hello Seattle Mariners fans! Evan James, Kate Preusser and Zach Mason are here on Sunday March 3rd to check in with the weather in Arizona after a few weeks of spring baseball. While the team's record may not reflect it in the wins and loss column, when it comes to how the bats and arms have looked so far, there is much to feel good about. Cole Young and Tyler Locklear look like they are on a rocket to the big leagues sooner than later. Emerson Hancock is throwing harder than ever? The bullpen isn't taking shape so much as remaining amorphous, giving up 24 runs over the past 48 hours. Yet hope springs eternal and hope abounds as the team thunders towards the start of the 2024 season. Will Ty France really play 3B? How worried should we really be about Matt Brash and Luis Urias? John Trupin, Kate Preusser and Zach Mason are joined by Lookout Landing prospect lead Max Ellingsen on Monday February 26th to talk about the kids. With few real position battles in camp, the prospects of note (Ford, Young, Locklear) are mostly in AA, rapidly approaching their debuts in the show. A mere three games into the spring, Young has already looked like he belongs with the big lead team, as does Locklear, as both prospects have come out of the gates swinging and looking quite convincing in doing so. What do the timelines look like for the big name prospects? Who else in the system should we be talking about? Shout out to our sponsor MacDougall bats! Hello Seattle Mariners fans! Evan James, Anders Jorstad and Zach Mason are here on Monday February 18th to talk spring baseball as the Mariners arrive in Peoria. While much of the team is settled with starters healthy and entrenched in the lineup, there are battles for roster spots yet to be won. How does the bullpen shake out? Is Levi Stoudt a lock to make the team? Is Austin Voth actually going to be a swingman even though Scott historically eschews the archetype? Is Taylor Trammell a dark horse in the outfield? How will the platoons ultimately shake out in terms of playing time? The market for some high profile free agents remains cold; could the Mariners be back in the Chapman mix? Why do we already have our eyes on the trade deadline? Hope springs eternal because baseball is back. Shout out to our sponsor MacDougall bats! Editor's note: Ander's mic is busted and getting high end feedback/buzzing. I've cleaned it up extensively, but that's why his vocal is a bit on the thin side. Hello Seattle Mariners fans! Evan James, Kate Preusser and John Trupin are joined by Seattle Times journalist Ryan Divish to talk Mariners as the fog starts to clear for spring baseball in Peoria. After a tumultuous start to the offseason, the Mariners find themselves in a unique spot with a new look team and refreshed expectations. How has the vibe shift in public been reflected in private behind the scenes? When did the financial restrictions come into play and begin shaping the offseason? Hello Seattle Mariners fans! Evan James, Kate Preusser and John Trupin are joined by notorious East Coast experts Zach Mason and Anders Jorstad to talk…WAIT FOR IT…another trade. Trader Jerry and bustin' Hollander have done it yet again, this time acquiring Gregory (not George) Santos from the Chicago White Sox in exchange for LL beloved prospect maverick Zach DeLoach, stuff+ darling Prelander Berroa and the 69th pick in the upcoming draft. After trading Justin Topa out of the fold, Santos becomes the team's third best relief pitcher by default. Perhaps most exciting of all, given Santo's young age and experience, he's ad addition you should feel comfortable penciling in as a long term bullpen fixture, not just a piece for 2024. Almost everyone knows someone who is battling a drug or alcohol problem. But most people have no idea what to do about it. Should you step in or step back? Support groups, like Al-Anon, encouraged people to detach from a loved one with a substance use disorder. But detachment doesn't help. Connection does. That's what Community Reinforcement and Family Training (CRAFT) is about. It's a set of skills family members learn and practice. Within 12 weeks, about 75% of loved ones with a drug or alcohol problem get into recovery. Laurie MacDougall is a CRAFT trainer who has a personal reason for helping families — her adult son battled drug addiction. Some of the things Laurie shares are the skills that can improve communication, the misconceptions about substance abuse, and the truth about how to increase the chances that a loved one will accept help.
