Don't adjust your podcasting devices, you're hearing correctly. Smith picks up reading before talking or anything else?!!? Joe tells Smith about why they're not funny, or maybe they're only funny to each other. Is it learned or learn-ed? JS is not a fan of smart people. The learn-ed person is kind of the natural enemy of the con artist. Joe makes an ableist joke that seminary teachers would like. Can a person get reverse-circumcised? Smith looked into it before. Joe's summary of how the contents of the BOM can be categorized into 3 or 4 categories comes from Jahndalyn's interview with Grant Palmer. Is JS LARP-ing as a 19th Century Protestant preacher in this chapter? Was Captain Kidd the same as Indiana Jones? Was the dog's name Captain? Joe reminds us of the idea where he reads a chapter. Smith prefers the Ron Howard series of The Office. Joe tries to give a pass to Arrested Development for being of its time. Smith teaches Joe about SMILE and Joe is not a fan. The guys go over new changes they would like to see in the endowment ceremony. Joe thinks the movie should be history of the entire world, i guess, and Smith wants it to get sexier. Smith refers the listener back to an episode of Nathan for You. JS gets a little bold about truth claims in this chapter, as per use. Joe starts to make a point about his faithful friend, Dwayne, but then he forgets. Joe refuses to cut ambient noise in this ep (he didn't follow through). He gets upset about the idea that the BOM is going to teach us about the ‘consequences of sin'. Then he issues a challenge to make a tbm-friendly ep that is sincere. The guys try another take on the condescension of god. Maybe they'll get it next time. Joe recaps some of his convo with a tbm friend which ended in the question- would the world have more sexual abuse if the church didn't exist? The guys talk about some of the methods the church uses to address the elephant in the room. Does the org structure of the church facilitate SA? Smith has heard some pretty inflammatory SA second-hand accounts. The guys are too afraid to tell their actual families about the podcast, so….spread the word? Don't forget to keep your relationships professional. Your family relationships, keep it professional. One of Joe's naughty mission companions taught him a song about smoking joints. The guys don't really have a patreon. On the latest episode of Mormon Book Reviews, the book "An Insider's View of Mormon Origins" by Grant Palmer is discussed by Evangelical Steven Pynakker. Grant was a well regarded CES instructor who would get disfellowshipped for publishing the book. It was a groundbreaking work when it first came out and for many it was the first time they were exposed to the stone in the hat translation narrative. I hope you find the review helpful and informative and I always appreciate the feedback!PatreonAn Insider's View of Mormon Origins

Grant Palmer is an educator and academic based in Southern California. Our conversation starts with music, which is only fitting because music is how Grant and I connected. From there, we uncover a somewhat turbulent young life marked by several medical mishaps. As with most of Detoxicity's guests, self-discovery and enlightenment is the name of the game here. Grant discusses how he intends to use his privilege to help less fortunate people, he discusses what it's like to raise a stepchild, and he ponders his future as a potential caretaker. It's a typically wide-ranging discussion that I hope you enjoy!

Have you ever wondered how much the top-level Mormon church leaders know about the problems with LDS Church truth claims, and for how long they have known about these problems? Long before Mormon General Authority F. Enzio Busche lost his testimony in the Mormon church… Long before Mormon Area Authority Hans Mattsson lost his testimony in the Mormon church.... Long before the CES Letter…Long before Mormon Stories Podcast...Long before Grant Palmer....Long before the Leonard Arrington church history years…Long before Fawn Brodie wrote “No Man Knows My History”.... ….did you know that a high-level Mormon General Authority lost his faith in the historicity of the Book of Mormon -- in the early 1900s - after an in-depth study of the scientific problems with the Book of Mormon (e.g., archaeological, anthropological, linguistic, geographic)?More significantly, did you know that this same General Authority notified the LDS First Presidency of the scientific problems with the Book of Mormon via three separate manuscripts, and in 1922 led a two-day emergency meeting in Salt Lake City with all the top Mormon church leadership -- the LDS First Presidency, the Quorum of 12 Apostles, and the Quorum of the Seventy -- to candidly discuss what to do about these problems with the Book of Mormon? Did you know that soon after this General Authority led this meeting with all the top Mormon church leadership, he was sent on a mission -- far, far away from LDS Church headquarters?Did you know that these three, in-depth manuscripts -- outlining in great detail the credible scientific problems with Book of Mormon historicity - were intentionally hid from LDS Church membership for over 60 years? Did you also know that after this General Authority died, top LDS Church leaders intentionally did all they could to erase from church membership the memory of this thoughtful, honest, and courageous General Authority?Did you know that the only reason we know any of this is because progressive Mormon church members quietly delivered copies of these manuscripts to Mormon scholars, and that these manuscripts were eventually published - against the Mormon church’s will - by the University of Illinois Press in the 1980s (and eventually by Signature Books)? Today’s Mormon Stories Podcast episode covers the rise and fall of Mormon General Authority Brigham Henry (B.H.) Roberts. You will not want to miss this story. Our interviewee is Mormon historian Shannon Caldwell Montez - who recently completed a Master’s Thesis at the University of Nevada - Reno entitled: “The Secret Mormon Meetings of 1922.” The song for today’s podcast bumper is called “All is Well” by The Sabre Rattlers.

Any thoughtful critic of the Book of Mormon is forced to take a position on the Book of Mormon Witnesses. Were they conscious frauds, delusional or perhaps hypnotized or otherwise misled? The Three Witnesses described seeing an angel and viewing the plates, together. The Eight Witnesses described handling the plates, turning the pages and seeing the engravings. Other witnesses, like Emma Smith, described picking up the plates, while covered with a linen cloth, feeling the pages, making them rustle. William Smith, another witness, lifted them and moved the pages through the linen cloth cover. Three of the five five physical senses, sight, touch and hearing, are used by the witnesses. Critics, including Grant Palmer and Dan Vogel, who claim some kind of delusion, hypnosis-like event or vision, are taking a position contrary to the actual, consistent testimony of the witnesses, whose testimony is based on three physical senses.

In this two-part episode we sit down a final time with Grant Palmer to discuss the release of his final book: Restoring Christ: Leaving Mormon Jesus for Jesus of the Gospels. In part 1 of the interview we dig deep into two chapters: one on Joseph Smith's possible treason against the United States government, and one on Joseph Smith's likely use of concubinage in addition to polygamy and polyandry. In part 2 we discuss Grant's research into "leaving Mormon Jesus for Jesus of the Gospels," and conduct a final Q&A with Grant.

In this three-part interview, we honor Grant Palmer, former LDS seminary/institute instructor, and author of "An Insider's View of Mormon Origins" - which provides a plausible explanation for how the Book of Mormon was authored by Joseph Smith. This interview has three parts: Part 1: Grant reflects on his experience authoring An Insider's View of Mormon origins, discusses his disfellowshipment and ultimate decision to resign from the LDS (after threats of excommunication). Grant also reflects upon the impact of An Insider's View on the LDS church. Part 2: Grant discusses his new, yet-to-be-published book, "Restoring Christ." Within the book he discusses why he continues to believe, how he justifies belief in Christ and the Bible after losing faith in the LDS church and in the Book of Mormon, what the atonement does and doesn't mean to him, how he deals with the God of the Old Testament, etc. He also discusses in-depth his conversation with an LDS general authority who claims that modern LDS apostles receive $1 million once they become apostles, and that many of them do not believe the LDS church to be true (a claim that I challenge). Part 3: Participants in the evening share with Grant what his work has meant to them. In addition, Tyler Glenn (Neon Trees) sings two songs in honor of Grant from his new album, Excommunication.

A bit of sad news, and a bit of happy news. First the sad. Grant Palmer, author of An Insider’s View of Mormon Origins – certainly one of the most important books in 20th/21st century Mormonism, is dying of cancer. I confirmed this with Grant yesterday – when he related to me that he likely only has weeks/months to live. This information moves many of us deeply, since Grant’s courageous scholarship over the years (which has come at a great personal cost to him) has been instrumental in helping tens of thousands of Mormons understand their church history more accurately. I dare say that projects like Mormon Stories Podcast, Mormon Think, Letter to a CES Director, and even the recent LDS Church Gospel Topics Essays would not exist without the courage and scholarship of Grant Palmer. Now for the happy news. Mormon Stories Podcast and the Open Stories Foundation, along with a few supporters, will be holding a private event in Grant Palmer’s honor on the evening of February 15, 2017* in Utah – with the plan of live-streaming the event to all who are interested in showing support for Grant. The event will include: An interview with Grant, wherein he will discuss his most recent book, along with reflections on his life. A chance for some of those who are grateful for Grant’s work to express appreciation for him. If you are interested in participating in this tribute/celebration, there are a few things you can do to participate: Record a brief Facebook or Youtube video expressing your gratitude to Grant (and his positive impact on your life), and post the link as a comment here. Write a text-based tribute to Grant in the comments section here. Send an email to mormonstories@gmail.com with “Grant Pamer” in the subject line, wherein you express to Grant your gratitude for the positive impact that his work has had on your life. Feel free to use the hash tag #grantpalmer for any of the tributes you share on social media. Finally, these emails, blog comments, and videos will be gathered and shared with Grant at the live-steamed, worldwide event in honor of him. Thanks for taking the time to honor Grant with us, and we very much look forward to the evening of February 15th* wherein we hope to show Grant how much we love and appreciate him! *Date subject to how Grant is doing/feeling.

On this episode, I tell everybody just how at home I felt at the Sunstone Symposium. Sunstone is a convention for Mormons and non-Mormons to gather together and talk about the hard issues, with presentations by authors, historians, podcasters, and directors of various foundations; some believers, others non-believers. I had the opportunity to totally geek out and interview some authors, historians, and podcasters that I revere and frequently cite as sources for my research. The audio quality isn’t great, but the content is superb. You’ll hear audio clips from Grant Palmer, D. Michael Quinn, H. Michael Marquardt, John Hammond, Lindsay Park, and John Dehlin. This Mormon Alchemist release brings you the highlights of the conversation. You can hear the original 4-hour episode in episodes 30-33 at mormonstories.org.
