Dan Wheldon, Kyle Kirkwood, J.R. Hildebrand, Jay Howard, Sage Karam, Oliver Askew, Spencer Pigot, and Rinus VeeKay. Beyond the fact that all of these drivers are either past or current competitors in the Indy 500, what do they have in common? They all competed in the USF2000 series, which is one of the feeder series to IndyCar. Al Morey IV is 17 years old and a rookie in the USF 2000 series, competing for Indianapolis-based team Jay Howard Driver Development. He lives in Fishers, and ever since he started racing karts at the age of 9, he has had his sights on the upper rungs of professional racing. But the road to IndyCar is never easy, in part because it is so expensive. Running an open-wheel car for a full season in USF2000 can easily run several hundred thousand dollars for the driver. That includes tires, engineering and mechanical services, parts and labor, track testing and travel, food, and lodging. Drivers can defray some of those costs with sponsor dollars, but they typically must arrange those relationships themselves. Al Morey's father, also named Al Morey, says the cost of this season could be anywhere between $400,000 to $700,000, depending, for example, on how often the car is damaged. In the latest edition of the IBJ Podcast, the father and son team talk about what it's like in the trenches of professional racing, the costs involved, and how they work together to secure sponsors. Oliver Askew was one of the most successful drivers on the Road To Indy where he won multiple championships (USF2000 and Indy Lights) and earned his way into the NTT IndyCar Series. Unfortunately a shunt at Indy caused a concussion and ultimately a job loss at his previous race team. In 2021, Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing picked him up for the final three races and Askew produced with a superb Firestone Fast Six qualifying spot (5th) the weekend before the Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach. We caught up with him in Long Beach and had a nice chat. In this interview Askew talks about how he prepares to go racing at the drop of a hat and the importance of team building from a driver's perspective. Tonight on Trackside, Kevin Lee and Curt Cavin talk with Rick Mears, who celebrated his 70th birthday last week. Before Curt chats with the four-time Indy 500 winner, the guys recap some recent IndyCar tests, including some rumored candidates to fill the number 20 car for Ed Carpenter Racing. They discuss the recent trend of European drivers getting tests with IndyCar teams and what that means for the series. Kevin and Curt talk about the upcoming PRI convention in Indianapolis, the latest on Dale Coyne Racing's lineup for next year, and other news and notes on car count. They also discuss the recent comments from Mark Miles about a potential IndyCar race in Mexico.   Rick Mears joins the show to talk about turning 70 and what he's been up to recently. The legend recounts the meeting of the four four-time Indy 500 winners after Helio Castroneves joined the club in May. He also talks about his relationship with fellow four-time champs A.J. Foyt and Al Unser Sr. Mears gives his thoughts on the state of IndyCar, including what he likes about the current cars and rules package.   Late in the show, Kevin interviews a pair of Road to Indy drivers who will team up with Cape Motorsports 2022. Jagger Jones, grandson of Parnelli, talks about his transition from stock cars to the Road to Indy and the challenge of being a college student while racing. Then, Trackside's resident driver Jackson Lee discusses his move to Cape Motorsports for next season and the safety improvements in USF2000. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Kevin and Curt remember our friend Robin Miller, who passed away last week at the age of 71. Kevin and Curt discuss Robin's huge influence in Indianapolis over the past 50 years and his unique personality and generosity. Curt tells stories of his time at the IndyStar with Robin and Kevin looks back on his time working with Robin at WIBC in the mid-90s and how Grid Walks came to IndyCar TV broadcasts in 2011. They continue to break down Silly Season, including the Racer.com report that Romain Grosjean will drive for Andretti Autosport in the number 28 Honda in 2022. The guys give a shoutout to Myles Rowe, who became the first Black driver to win an IndyCar-sanctioned race this past weekend in USF2000, and mention the NHRA U.S. Nationals, which return to Lucas Oil Raceway this weekend. In the second hour, Kevin and Curt dig more into free agency rumors, including if Simon Pagenaud could end up at Meyer Shank Racing and the potential for Kyle Larson to run the Indy 500 for Team Penske. Late in the show, the guys talk about Jimmie Johnson's test at Texas and if the seven-time NASCAR Cup champ could be in line to race in the Indy 500 next year.  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Early last fall, the Sports Car Club of America announced a new entry-level pro formula car program, Formula 4. When most people think of junior formula programs in the US, the Mazda Road to Indy is the first to come to mind. While the combination of USF2000, Pro Mazda and Indy Lights makes for an excellent program for those seeking a career in IndyCar, it's lack of inclusion in the Super License program makes it a challenging path for those seeking a career in Formula 1. Paul gives us the complete details on the origins of the Formula 4 program, how it fits into the SCCA Pro Racing program, and into the larger American junior formula car racing landscape.
