In the latest episode of the Cross Examiner podcast, we delve into the fascinating journey of Dr. John Dehlin, host of the Mormon Stories podcast. Dr. Dehlin, an ex-Mormon, has dedicated his career to exposing the truths behind Mormon practices and helping others navigate their own faith crises. This episode is a continuation of our in-depth conversation with him, exploring the psychological and social impacts of religious indoctrination, the rise of Christian nationalism, and the role of misinformation.Dr. Dehlin's journey is both compelling and relatable. Raised as a sixth-generation Mormon, he was taught to obey and follow the church's teachings without question. However, cracks began to form in his faith as he encountered various inconsistencies and ethical concerns, particularly during his mission in Guatemala. His experiences there, coupled with the rise of the internet and the availability of information, led him to question the very foundations of his beliefs. One of the most striking aspects of Dr. Dehlin's story is the concept of the "shelf." In the Mormon and post-Mormon world, individuals are encouraged to put doubts and questions on a metaphorical shelf, trusting that answers will come in time. For Dr. Dehlin, the shelf eventually became too heavy to bear, leading to a profound crisis of faith. This journey of questioning and seeking truth is something many can relate to, regardless of their religious background. The episode also delves into the broader implications of religious indoctrination and the rise of secular support systems. Dr. Dehlin discusses the importance of organizations like Recovering from Religion and the Secular Therapy Project, which provide crucial support for individuals leaving high-demand religions. These organizations offer a safe space for people to explore their doubts and find a community that understands their struggles. One of the most powerful moments in the episode is when Dr. Dehlin talks about the psychological impact of leaving a high-demand religion. He shares how many individuals experience anxiety, depression, and even suicidal thoughts as they grapple with the loss of their faith and the subsequent social and familial fallout. This highlights the critical need for mental health support and resources for those undergoing such transitions.Dr. Dehlin's work with the Mormon Stories podcast has not only helped countless individuals but also shed light on the broader human experience. As he aptly puts it, "The Mormon story is the human story." By sharing personal narratives, his podcast fosters empathy and understanding, encouraging listeners to see the common threads that connect us all.For those interested in exploring these themes further, we highly recommend tuning into this episode. Dr. Dehlin's insights and experiences offer a valuable perspective on the intersection of religion, truth, and personal transformation. Whether you're grappling with your own faith or simply curious about the human condition, this episode is sure to resonate.Don't miss out on this enlightening conversation. I denne episoden møter du Erlend Dehlin, professor i Utdanningsledelse v/NTNU. Whistleblowers often suffer consequences for speaking out, and our guest Dr. John Dehlin knows that first-hand. A 6th generation member, he was excommunicated from the Church of Latter Day Saints (LDS) for speaking up about gay rights and the suicide problem within the LDS church. They didn't like him raising those issues, but he persevered and is now helping others find their way out of religious faith crises and transition to a free life. Dr. Dehlin holds a master's degree in instructional technology and a Ph.D. in Clinical and Counseling Psychology. His interests revolve around the nexus of religion and mental health, emphasizing navigating religious faith crises and LGBTQ religious identity conflict. He is the CEO of the Open Stories Foundation. Yes, The BITE Model fits the LDS Church. The FLDS is much more destructive and extreme on the Influence Continuum. This is a blockbuster interview! This episode is my conversation with Connor Dehlin, host of Millennial in the Middle Podcast. He asked me a lot of great questions and we had a very meaningful and personal discussion. My only complaint is that he identified me as a member of the "LGBTQIA+" community, which is not a label I choose to embrace. Here's his description of this episode: We have had a lot of interesting guests on the show, but today's guest may be our most entertaining and colorful yet. Ryan Woods is a gay man and as a drag queen (artist) travels the country as his character Lady Maga USA. Yes… Make America Great Again. If that doesn't intrigue you, I'm not sure what will.Full Bio: Ryan Woods is a proud Eagle Scout, America-first Republican, Christian, and political activist. He's an award-winning journalist with a background in mass communication and video production. He's President of Log Cabin Republicans Utah and is working to save his state from a leftist takeover. He's been performing and dancing since he was a tiny tot. Drag artistry is a composite outlet for all the things he loves, such as fashion, theater, costumes, makeup and imagination. “Being Lady Maga USA is about joy. When I see the smiles and happiness she brings to any event, my heart is full,” says Woods. Most LGBT Conservatives are afraid to publicly share their views.“I want to empower others to loudly and proudly declare their love of America and join the Conservative movement. I get so many messages from LGBT Conservatives who are afraid to speak out. I hope my example inspires them to have the courage to do so,” said Woods. To listen to more of Connor's podcasts, visit www.ConnorDehlin.comSupport this podcast by donating monthly, no matter how small an amount, at www.LadyMagaUSA.com

Five years years ago, upon completing my Psychology Ph.D., I began holding retreats and workshops to support Mormons in faith crisis, and specifically to help reduce anxiety, depression, suicidality, family strife, and unnecessary divorce for those experiencing a Mormon Faith Crisis. For many of these workshops and retreats, I was fortunate to co-present with Natasha Helfer Parker and Margi Dehlin. In August of 2019 we decided to hold a weekend retreat and record the entire experience ,including the attendee participation. This is that retreat, which was held from 8/30 to 9/1/2019 in Salt Lake City, Utah. 40 audience members participated. The following topics were addressed: Understanding and Navigating a Religious Transition Fundamentals of Mental Health in a Religious Transition The Key to Healthy Relationships: Emotional Intimacy Healthy Sexuality After a Faith Transition Conscious Parenting Communicating with Believing Family and Friends We hope you enjoy this content. It is the best insight we can share to help you navigate your religious transition. Finally, a HUGE thanks goes to Clint and Jeni Martin for underwriting this event.
