Elwin Hofman joins Jana Byars to talk about the volume he edited with Magaly Rodríguez García & Pieter Vanhees, The Business of Pleasure: A History of Paid Sex in the Heart of Europe (Leuven UP, 2022). In 2022, the Belgian parliament made a landmark decision by approving the decriminalisation of sex work. This move positioned the small nation as the first country in Europe - and the second globally - to abandon the hypocrisy of tolerance. Yet this was not the first time paid sex in Belgium gained international notoriety. The bathhouses of the fifteenth-century 'frows of Flanders' were well-known throughout Europe. In the nineteenth century, Belgium faced international outrage as the alleged epicentre of white slavery. Although Belgians were then accused of forcing white women into prostitution, they were also free to include any suspect women in the prostitution registers of colonial Congo. Throughout the First and Second World Wars, both allied and German soldiers sought relief in Belgian brothels. The Business of Pleasure presents the compelling life stories of sex workers and their interactions with authorities, clients and pimps. Pushing beyond stereotypes, this history of commercial sex offers a nuanced understanding of the difficulties and opportunities associated with paid sex for women, men and trans persons past and present. In this episode, we talk with Dr. Molly Zuckerman, Professor of Biological Anthropology at Mississippi State University, about ethics, care, and responsibility in bioarchaeology. We discuss her recent article, “Exercises in ethically engaged work in biological anthropology,” and explore how human remains can be dehumanized in research and teaching collections, and how approaches such as osteobiographies can help restore personhood. Dr. Zuckerman also reflects on generational tensions in the field, the ethical challenges posed by climate change to archaeological sites, and how early-career scholars can develop thoughtful, context-specific ethical frameworks. ------------------------------ Find the work discussed in this episode: Zuckerman, M. Eva Hofman is journalist en schrijver.
Starting in December, the government is banning new prescriptions of puberty blockers to adolescents. However, concerns have been raised about the effect this ban will have on the mental health of these individuals – research suggests that the medication reduces mental health distress in transgender youth, a community that is already vulnerable. Banning the drug may have adverse affects in this same vein. Monday Wire Producer Alex spoke to Professor in Pediatric Endocrinology at the Liggins Institute at the University of Auckland, Paul Hofman, about the ban, and what it means for the mental health of our transgender and gender dysphoric youth.

Released on November 7th, 2025, Shatter & Bloom is Stellvris' explosive new EP, blending raw emotion, melody, and heaviness into a powerful statement of modern metal strength. Since forming in 2019, the European metal outfit have built their brand around honesty and emotional depth, exploring pain but also how to turn that pain into power. Here on their new EP, Shatter & Bloom, they deliver their most intense statement yet. We loved it. Describing it as: A high-energy, intense, and creative record. When you pack so many ideas, components, and genre switches into a release — and even within individual songs — there's always a risk of losing some listeners. But Stellvris manage to strike a balance, especially between the electronic elements and the more traditional instrumentation. What's clear is that this band has real talent: powerful rhythm work, strong guitar and bass tones, and a remarkably versatile vocalist. They know how to use those strengths intelligently, and the crisp production ensures every detail shines through. The result is a modern, ambitious, and fiercely engaging release from a band that looks set to achieve huge things. Read the full review here: https://www.gbhbl.com/ep-review-stellvris-shatter-bloom-self-released/ The EP has depth, and that is what we explore with vocalist Nicol Hofman. Digging into the detail of the EP, the journey to its release, evolving the Stellvris sound, what the future looks like, and so much more. Hot off the press in the Presidential Plenary at #ESMO25, we chat with Dr Scott Tagawa (Weill-Cornell, USA) about the positive data he just presented from the PSMAddition trial. This is an eagerly awaited phase III randmosied trial of patients with mHSPC, to see if the addition of six cycles of Lu-PSMA-617 to a control arm of ADT and an ARPI, could improve rPFS and other endpoints. We are also joined in the studio by Prof Michael Hofman (Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, AUS), co-PI of the UpFront PSMA trial which also explored a similar concept, plus some comments from our other colleague, prof Arun Azad, who was the Discussant in the Presidential at ESMO25. Muzeum Getta Warszawskiego to cenna i potrzebna inicjatywa – mówi Artur Hofman w Radiu Wnet. Ostrzega jednak, że zmiany w kierownictwie mogą zagrozić obiektywnej narracji o historii.Zmiany kadrowe w Muzeum Getta Warszawskiego komentował w Poranku Radia Wnet Artur Hofman, członek Rady Muzeum i prezes Stowarzyszenia Społeczno-Kulturalnego Żydów w Polsce. Jeśli zabraknie prawdy i obiektywizmu, całe przedsięwzięcie straci sens– podsumowuje Hofman.

We're excited to welcome Christiaan Hofman—Author of "To Meet Yourself, Think For Yourself", founder of Sport Naturel, and creator of The Sport Naturel Method—to the Tactical Living Podcast.

She's back! In this action-packed follow-up episode, Amanda Hofman — one of the founders of NYC-based Go To Market Studio — returns to The Found Podcast to talk all things strategic merch. We first met Amanda in Episode 157, where we dove into her career journey and how she built a company rooted in intentional, anti-boring custom merchandise for brands that want to stand out and create lasting impressions. In this 2025-focused conversation, Amanda and I get tactical about: How to make branded merch that actually gets used (and remembered) Why merch should be part of your strategic marketing plan—not an afterthought Specific ways service-based businesses, speakers, coaches, and digital brands can integrate merch into their sales funnels and brand experiences Trends in merch design, sourcing, and storytelling that can help you level up in the new year Actual examples of real businesses and how Amanda would coach them to create and use merch This is a must-listen episode for anyone planning a product launch, team retreat, client gifting campaign, or live event. If you want to grow your visibility and deepen your connection with your audience in a tangible way—this is your episode.
On this episode, rural sociologist Dr. Irna Hofman explores how Tajikistan's cotton fields illuminate shifting power dynamics in Central Asia, historically and in the present. She discusses how the Soviet Union once showcased cotton production to visiting delegations—particularly from Muslim-majority countries—as evidence of its development model. Now, as global powers, including Russia, China, and the EU, vie for influence in the region, cotton has again become a strategic commodity—used to forge political ties, secure resources, and drive infrastructure projects. Hofman highlights local communities' active role in shaping these developments, emphasizing that rural landscapes are not simply backdrops for a “New Great Game,” but sites where broader geopolitical forces and grassroots agency intersect. Through her long-term fieldwork, she illustrates how Tajik farmers navigate and negotiate these overlapping external interests, and in doing so, reframe Central Asia's future amidst geopolitical tensions. Dr. Hofman specializes in agrarian and social change in Central Asia, where she has worked since 2012. She completed post-doctoral research at Oxford's Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies as part of an ERC-funded project "China, law and development." In 2019, she obtained her Ph.D. from Leiden University in the Netherlands with a dissertation focused on the political economy of agrarian transformation in Tajikistan: "Cotton, control, and continuity in disguise: The political economy of agrarian transformation in lowland Tajikistan." Her research interests span political economy, political ecology, and political sociology. In recent years, she has focused on rural labour, gender, and commodity politics. Dr. Hofman is completing a monograph based on her dissertation and post-doctoral research projects. Her research agenda for the coming years centers on the rural everyday of geopolitics, focusing on China's growing assertiveness in the global agrifood regime, shifting geographies of production, and rural labour.

A paediatric endocrinologist believes the Health Ministry's puberty blocker stance is sensible. The Ministry's brief shows a lack of good quality evidence backing the drug's effectiveness and safety for treating gender dysphoria. It says they should only be prescribed by a clinician experienced in gender-affirming care, as part of a team offering a full range of support. Paul Hofman told Mike Hosking puberty blockers are safe and reversible, and have been used by hundreds of thousands of kids in the last 30 years. He says data on its efficacy is poor, which is down to doctors not following up on the treatment, and assuming it will work as intended. Affiliate marketing is an invaluable strategy for B2B SaaS companies that want to expand their reach and increase sales. In this special episode, the host of this show Grow Your B2B SaaS Podcast, Joran Hofman, founder of Reditus, hosts himself to dissect the crucial topic of affiliate marketing. By leveraging third-party affiliates—such as influencers, bloggers, and consultants—companies can promote their products or services and pay affiliates a commission for driving conversions.
