An Aussie speedway star with a seriously impressive record. We’ve been wanting to get Robbie Farr on the pod for a while and he doesn’t disappoint. The influence of family (he started going to oval tracks like the Sydney Showground and Liverpool when he was just weeks old) and how he harnessed a bit of a ‘wild’ approach in his early years to become the complete package. Is the story of fudging birth dates to get a racing license an urban myth? How karting in his teens, when Mark Webber and Craig Lowndes were starting out, nearly lead to Formula Ford and a potential circuit racing path. The gripping yarn of driving a midget (speedcar) and learning that his car owner had saved his Mum’s life years earlier! And reflections of some of the teams he’s raced for in iconic cars that will bring memories for Speedway fans flooding back. Strap in and enjoy the ride. In this interview Tommy reveals the truth behind why he didn't stay in Formula 1 and dominate in the way that his abilities predicted. He also discusses his unique speed secrets and a career overlapping with Ayrton Senna. Tommy has something in common with pretty much every top level Champion I've studied from his era of racing. He was a factory driver at Van Diemen in Formula Ford in the 80's. That fact alone doesn't necessarily guarantee success, but what it did guarantee was SHED LOADS of seat time – fine-tuning the chassis – and developing as a driver. Practice perfects the art. My impression from speaking to Tommy is that he's a real seat-of-the-pants cowboy who drove the wheels off everything he sat in. Watching his racing footage, you can tell that his style is cavalier but perfectly balanced. There's plenty of archive footage of his driving for you to decide for yourself. I'm always fascinated by what makes someone ludicrously fast and it's every racing driver's job to observe and poach as much information from other competitors as possible. In the era before data-logging it was much harder to do so and the only way to observe was to follow in their wheel tracks, gauge their lines and braking points, the shifting weight of the car at turn in and hear the throttle inputs. Maybe one day I can get on track with Tommy in identical cars and have at it !!!

Hello again Racing Ears, I went to the 2023 CSRG Autumn-Tacular Season Finale at Thunder Hill Raceway and had a new way of capturing footage to make episodes.  I got to briefly chat with owners / driver members of the Classic Sports Racing Group which had its season ending event in early November 2023 at Thunder Hill Raceway in Willows California, just off of Interstate 5 south of Redding California and west of Chico California.  I enjoyed getting to know passionate sports car racing enthusiasts who owned these fun sports racing cars and got a tiny taste of what its like to own them, run them, prepare them, and troubleshoot them.  The CSRG consists of members who own racing cars such as:  the Formula Ford, the Formula Vee, the MG Midget, the MG Sprite, the Porsche 911, the Datsun 510, the Mazda Miata, and many other makes and models.  I really enjoyed the Saturday Night dinner and I am thankful to have been attending these events for 9 years.  I look forward to their first event of the year at Sears Point in March of 2024.  Thank you for listening to The Racing Ear Podcast!!#csrg https://www.csrgracing.org/#csrgracing#thunderhillraceway#sportsracingcars#historicsportscarracing#theracingearpodcast#formulaford#formulavee#datsun510#mazdamiata#mg#mgmidget#mgsprite  Support the showhttps://www.fiverr.com/s/paAkwE

Danny Edwards book, DRIVEN - The Danny Edwards Story is a great read and fascinating about a self-taught golfer who went on be compete against the best in the world. Danny is a lifetime PGA Tour member and the creator of The Chipping Equation. As a pro, Danny won 20 tournaments worldwide including 5 PGA Tour championships. He was recently selected as one of the Top 100 Professional Golfers of The Modern Era. He had a dual career in two professions that are about as far apart as they could be and he loved them both. Racing was a very exhilarating, physically challenging endeavor where golf was slow and precise. It was a very interesting marriage of careers.” If you're going to drive a race car, you've got to be on prime alert and have tremendous coordination. Danny was intense about racing, and he knew cars and machines and was really talented at it. Edwards had met Roger Penske and become a part of his team. He won two Midwest Division National Championships, in the highly competitive Formula Ford class, in 1984 and '85. He drove a Mustang LX for Kaufmann Racing in the World Challenge Series – formerly the Escort Endurance series – and a Sports 2,000 Swift for the Pfeiffer-Ridge team of Sonoma in the American City Racing League. In the summer of 1988, after 14 years on the PGA Tour, and never losing exempt status, Edwards stepped away from competitive golf and founded Royal Grip Inc., in Scottsdale, Arizona. The company would become its own revolution in advancing and improving perhaps the most essential piece of golf equipment. Then Danny turned his attention to the business world. In 1998, Edwards became CEO of GreenFix Golf, a company that manufactures a tool that enables players and maintenance crews to repair ball marks to golf greens. In 2019, he founded The Chipping Equation, a revolutionary yet simple system that is geared to helping golfers of all abilities learn and perfect one forgotten yet key segment of the game.  thechippingequation.com More question for Danny text him at: 602 – 321 - 0410

He didn't come from a racing family. He followed in the footsteps of his father and qualified as a doctor. How Jonathan Palmer ended up driving in Formula 1 is an intriguing tale of passion for racing, intuition and plenty of graft. Palmer initially competed in Formula Ford but after qualifying as a doctor, he decided to focus on racing professionally. He became British Formula 3 champion in 1981 and European Formula 3 champion in 1983. That year, Williams gave him his F1 debut at the European Grand Prix. He would go on to race for RAM, Zakspeed and Tyrrell over the next six years – scoring 14 championship points along the way. Palmer takes Tom Clarkson through his unique journey from studying medicine to competing in Formula 1. He reflects on some memorable drives in Monaco and we hear wonderful insight into what it was like working with Ayrton Senna as a test driver for McLaren in 1990. Palmer, whose son Jolyon also raced in F1 for Renault in 2016 and 2017, became part of the BBC's Formula 1 coverage after retiring. He recalls working the day Senna lost his life at Imola in May 1994. Follow, rate and review F1 Beyond The Grid and share this episode using #F1BeyondTheGrid.

For most racing drivers, the chance to step up to Formula 1 is the opportunity of their careers, but Anthony Davidson says that his first grand prix start is something he still regrets to this day.Speaking to Chris Medland in the final episode from the current My big break series, WEC champion Davidson talks about the turning points in his career, which included more than a decade in top-level racing.Along the way, he brings his thoughtful views on why F1's points system should be revamped, the challenges facing female racing drivers, and his current commentary role.He reveals how an impromptu visit to Brands Hatch was the key to moving out of karting — where he raced alongside the likes of Dan Wheldon and Jenson Button — and into Formula Ford. Within two years, Davidson was a Formula 1 test driver and he eventually got his chance to race with Minardi, driving what he calls a "beast" of a car that he wasn't physically prepared for — and paying £250,000 for the privilege. But Davidson bided his time and was rewarded with a drive for Super Aguri, where he came agonisingly close to scoring world championship points. With the withdrawal of the team, he turned to sports cars, racing for Aston Martin before joining Peugeot's effort and then moving to Toyota, where he admits he's still "grieving" the 2016 Le Mans win that never was, when his car broke down with a lap remaining.Frank, funny, and insightful, Davidson takes you through the highs and lows of his eventful career.
