Hal Ackerman is making his second appearance on StoryBeat. Hal spent thirty years teaching screenwriting in UCLA's legendary screenwriting program. Along with Richard Walter and Lew Hunter, Hal helped launch the careers of many dozens of writers whose work you've seen on screens large and small. Hal has sold film and television material to all the outlets. His screenplay Holmeyer's Bridge, holds the unofficial Guinness record for having been continuously optioned for twenty consecutive years, owned during that stretch by two Academy Award winning producers, two Tony Award winning producers and others. His short fiction has appeared in numerous literary journals. “Sweet Day” was recorded by the late Robert Forster. Concrete Charley and The Golden Boy won the 2020 Sports Literate Sport Short contest.Hal's written three “Soft boiled” murder mystery novels about an aging counter-culture P.I. named Harry Stein. The first of those, Stein Stung, won a Lovey award for best first novel. Subsequently, he published Stein Stoned and more recently, Smoke and Lather. I thoroughly enjoyed reading all three Stein books and can tell you Hal delivers a unique take on the detective genre. Funny while being dramatic, Hal's writing is cleverly brilliant and brilliantly clever. I highly recommend all three Harry Stein books to you.Hal's also known for publishing the highly informative and truly useful book, Write Screenplays that Sell: The Ackerman Way. If you want insight from one of the foremost screenwriting teachers of the last half century, make a point to check it out. Hal's One-Man play, Testosterone: How Prostate Cancer Made a Man of Me (renamed Prick) won the William Saroyan award for drama and was named Best Play at the 2012 New York Solo Festival. In the interest of full disclosure, I'm proud to say I was fortunate to have been one of Hal's many students while I was attending UCLA's Graduate Screenwriting program. www.halackermanwriting.com CreativeLive.com

This week Congressional Republicans took the next step towards enacting Trump's Robin Hood in reverse agenda, when Senate Republicans passed a budget giving them fast-track authority to slash taxes for billionaires. In the process, the GOP proved they don't actually care at all about deficits – if it's tax cuts for the wealthy on the line. Harry Stein and Rachel West, two of CAP's budget nerds, join the show to discuss the latest in the tax and budget fight – and what Trump's tax plan has to do with ponies. Later in the show, prisoners are being paid less than $2 an hour to fight the raging California wildfires. Rebecca speaks with Angela Hanks, CAP's workforce development expert, about the ethics of prison labor. And finally, Rebecca speaks with Khiara Bridges, whose new book, The Poverty of Privacy Rights, investigates how the state intervenes in all facets of poor mothers' privacy.
The GOP is pivoting to what it's calling “tax reform” (read: tax cuts for billionaires), with both the House and Senate moving budgets this week to kick off that process. We cut through the wonkery—and award well-deserved Pinocchios—with Harry Stein, CAP's budget guru. Next we're joined by Ian Millhiser, Justice Editor and Supreme Court watcher at Think Progress, for a rundown of the biggest cases to watch now in the Supreme Court's new term. And don't miss our bonus interview with Brenda Torres, an environmental justice advocate in Puerto Rico who sheds light on the disaster many low-income communities on the island were facing long before the storm.
After efforts to repeal Obamacare were dealt a deathblow (we hope), GOP leaders in Congress are turning their attention to so-called tax reform. CAP budget guru, Harry Stein, joins us to lay out the fight ahead: In a time of crushing income inequality, Americans want tax reform that ensures everyone is paying their fair share but the Republican Party wants a wealth grab for the highest earners in the country. Later in the show, Maura Calsyn, CAP's Managing Director of Health Policy, talks with us about Trump's continued efforts to sabotage Obamacare markets. A self-described feminist Muslim, Iranian-American comedian, Zahra Noorbaksh, shares how she uses comedy to break through bigotry in America. And Rebecca closes the show with some thoughts on efforts by Trump's Department of Education to make colleges campuses safer… for students who commit sexual assault.
This week, House Republicans released a blueprint for their proposed 2018 budget, Igor & Michele speak with Representative Rosa DeLauro (D-CT 3rd District), Ranking Member of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education and author of "The Least Among Us: Waging the Battle for the Vulnerable," and CAP’s Harry Stein to help us understand what’s in this budget, and what the American people REALLY need economically.
President Trump released his budget this week, and as expected, it's a body-slam to everybody but the wealthy. Harry Stein joins Rebecca and Jeremy to walk through some of the budget's most egregious cuts. Next, Anna Chu and Bishop Dwayne Royster break down how the budget hits women and communities of color — and what advocates can do to stop these cuts. And finally, Alex Lawson joins to debunk the myth that President Trump's budget didn't break his promise not to cut Social Security.
Does another government shutdown loom ahead? Harry Stein, the Center for American Progress's budget guru, joins Rebecca and The Slevs to share the skinny on tax reform, budget fights, and the possibility of yet another government shutdown. Next, Dylan Matthews of Vox unpacks why it's such a big deal that Sesame Street now has an autistic character. And finally, as part of our #ResistanceWorks series, Ezra Levin of Indivisible talks about what's behind the Tax March and what's on deck for the resistance.
President Trump released his first budget, which proposes dramatic cuts to nutrition, housing, job training, legal services, and more. Meanwhile, Republicans have declared war on a critical tool for enforcing legal rights and protections: the class action lawsuit. Sharon Dietrich, a longtime legal aid lawyer and class action litigator, joins to unpack what these proposals would mean for access to justice. Next up, the latest shoe to drop in the GOP's efforts to repeal the Affordable Care Act was a letter quietly sent to governors that does not bode well for the future of Medicaid. But first, Harry Stein, the Center for American Progress's beloved budget guru, joins Rebecca and Jeremy to walk through the winners and losers of Trump's budget.
Bill Press is out so executive producer Peter Ogburn is filling in. He welcomes Harry Stein, Tim Mak, & Joel Payne to discuss Mick Mulvaney's heartless defense of Donald Trump's disastrous budget, how Republicans will respond to the budget, Sean Spicer's belief there's "more to come" on the wiretapping claims, & what Democrats can to do fight the budget and the GOP health care plan - all the big highlights from this Friday edition of the Bill Press Show!
In this episode of the 10 Blocks Podcast, City Journal editor Brian Anderson interviews Harry Stein, author of recent City Journal article “How My Friends and I Wrecked Pomona College.”

It’s a slow week at the box office. Not We Are Your Friends slow. But still… So we decided to finally get around to a listener request (are you happy now, Harry Stein?) and discuss our favorite directors. It’s a drama packed episode as Kevin limits who we can choose, Blake steals Joe’s choice, Dan goes artsy, Tom goes old(er) and Kevin spends his time dry-humping a Man of Steel poster. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Thank you for your support and I will be back next Monday with our next Muck Monster!
