The Fighting Oligarchy tour of Bernie Sanders and AOC has had amazing turnouts: 36,000 people in Los Angeles, 100,000 people in Coachella, and huge crowds in red districts across the country; followed by big campaign donations as Bernie and AOC become "the personification of the resistance" against the Trump administration. Also, Trump continues to defy court orders, including those issued after the unanimous Supreme Court ruling to return Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia to the US from El Salvador after an illegal deportation – the defiance of such a court order by a US president is the first of its kind in history – Harold Meyerson comments.Next: While Trump's attacks on the universities have broadened, and while Columbia is submitting to his requirements, Harvard's president has declared that Harvard will not comply with Trump's demands in exchange for keeping its federal funding. David Cole comments - he recently stepped down as National Legal Director of the ACLU to return to teaching law at Georgetown.Plus: The illegal detention of Palestinian students attending US universities: the detention of Mohsen Madawi seems to be the most outrageous of all the cases of detained students opposing Israel's war in Gaza; UCLA Professor of Jewish History David Meyers reports.
Hal Ackerman is making his second appearance on StoryBeat. Hal spent thirty years teaching screenwriting in UCLA's legendary screenwriting program. Along with Richard Walter and Lew Hunter, Hal helped launch the careers of many dozens of writers whose work you've seen on screens large and small. Hal has sold film and television material to all the outlets. His screenplay Holmeyer's Bridge, holds the unofficial Guinness record for having been continuously optioned for twenty consecutive years, owned during that stretch by two Academy Award winning producers, two Tony Award winning producers and others. His short fiction has appeared in numerous literary journals. “Sweet Day” was recorded by the late Robert Forster. Concrete Charley and The Golden Boy won the 2020 Sports Literate Sport Short contest.Hal's written three “Soft boiled” murder mystery novels about an aging counter-culture P.I. named Harry Stein. The first of those, Stein Stung, won a Lovey award for best first novel. Subsequently, he published Stein Stoned and more recently, Smoke and Lather. I thoroughly enjoyed reading all three Stein books and can tell you Hal delivers a unique take on the detective genre. Funny while being dramatic, Hal's writing is cleverly brilliant and brilliantly clever. I highly recommend all three Harry Stein books to you.Hal's also known for publishing the highly informative and truly useful book, Write Screenplays that Sell: The Ackerman Way. If you want insight from one of the foremost screenwriting teachers of the last half century, make a point to check it out. Hal's One-Man play, Testosterone: How Prostate Cancer Made a Man of Me (renamed Prick) won the William Saroyan award for drama and was named Best Play at the 2012 New York Solo Festival. In the interest of full disclosure, I'm proud to say I was fortunate to have been one of Hal's many students while I was attending UCLA's Graduate Screenwriting program. www.halackermanwriting.com CreativeLive.com
Welcome to another episode ofThe Round Table! This week, Daniella, Preena, Kassandra, Inyoo and Sauda discussed the power of story-telling, intersectional identities, the role of youth in bringing about societal change, and so much more. They spoke with Dr. Rob Carpenter, a UCLA Professor and author, who has worked in the White House, Hollywood, tech and transportation, and who is a self-described “firm believer in the power of creativity and storytelling.”The hosts learned how Dr. Rob's intersectional identity -- as a part Black, White, and Native man who grew up in a fully White household, in a predominantly Latinx neighborhood, with Jewish and Asian best-friends -- shapes his writing and allows him to empathize with many diverse groups of people. They question whether today's world lives up to Martin Luther King Jr.'s dream, share hope for the future through collective youth organizing, and even ponder how idealism grapples with reality in the possibility of creating a utopian world. Passionate for the virtue of stories over statistics in all levels of education, Dr. Rob shares how often, as early as 2nd Grade, students are “educated out of their creativity” -- teachers forced to teach to the test are unable to incorporate stories or the arts, contributing to the attendance crises across many schools. Yet the system is possible to reform if politicians are made to understand it needs changing, and on a smaller level, Dr.Rob describes how he, utilizing his curriculum freedom as a College Professor, makes sure every lesson includes reflection questions giving students the opportunity to relate their personal experiences to class-content.Asked about his suggestions to fix the educational system, Dr. Rob mentions increasing inter-subject integration, role-playing in the classroom, and teaching “from the outside in.” The conversation wraps up with hosts sharing their “why” for participating in these late-night conversations and staying involved overall, and giving their advice for the generation coming up behind them. Thank you for listening!

Lots of pro-Palestine encampments on college campuses have been attacked by local police, but UCLA was different: a pro-Israel mob attacked the encampment on April 30. The attack continued for three hours before police stepped in, and they didn't arrest any of the attackers. The next night, the police themselves attacked and shut down the encampment. UCLA Professor and Chair in Jewish History, David Myers has our report. Also on this episode: There's no doubt that Israeli women and girls were raped during the Hamas attack on Oct. 7; but there is little evidence to support Israel's charge that rape was a “premeditated, systematic” strategy by Hamas—offered as a justification for Israel's destruction of Gaza and killing of 35,000 civilians. At the same time, evidence is growing of sexual abuse of Palestinian women held in detention by Israel. Azadeh Moaveni reports on the findings of her reporting for the London Review of Books.Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
Are Latinos becoming the new whites, and what role does politics play in this ideological shift? We talk to Political psychologist Efren Perez, a UCLA Professor of Political Science and Psychology, who holds a PhD from Duke University. His research focuses on race, ethnicity, politics, and society. He recently wrote an article in Newsweek titled "Why the Politics of Republican Latinos Suggests They Want to be White." In it, he argues that some Latinos view whiteness not as a race but as an ideology associated with power, privilege, and dominance. In this episode, Professor Perez uses data and scientific analysis to explore the psychological and political factors that drive some Latinos to aspire to "whiteness." Is it a survival mechanism or is it status-seeking? What are the long-term implications of this negotiation of identity? This episode's discussion promises to challenge everything you thought you knew about Latino identity in the U.S. Episode Summary: Perez on his recent Newsweek article and the concept of "ideological whiteness." Exploring Latino identity and the political landscape. Impact of personality traits on political ideology among Latinos. Latino Republicans and their alignment with conservative ideologies. Discussion on how historical shifts have redefined racial categories. Potential future of Latino identity and politics in the U.S. Key Quotes: ❞ Efren on the potential transformation of Latino identity through political allegiances: "Are you going to say, “I can acknowledge that's my social position, but in order for me to get something better, I got to distance myself from these other groups?” Efren on the interplay between internal group dynamics and external political pressures: "We've been talking about Latinos and African Americans and other groups as if they sort of naturally belong together. They don't." Efren on the Political Shifts in Latino Identity "The main point is that the category of white has expanded and narrowed across the centuries. And we are living in a moment, awash in data where we can show you that it's going through expansion right now." Efren on Racial and Political Dynamics “Quit focusing on the outliers, visible as they may be, tempting as it may be, and focus your energy on organizing, mobilizing the two-thirds that are already convinced, but don't have the time to vote, don't have the time or resources to make their perspective felt." Hal Hershfield is a leading expert on the psychology of making decisions, but that doesn't mean that he always makes the right decisions about money, which should be reassuring for us all to hear. A Professor of Marketing, Behavioral Decision Making, and Psychology at UCLA's Anderson School of Management, Hal joins Carl to discuss some of his earliest memories about money (he looked it up in the ‘M' book of his Encyclopedia), the importance of aligning capital with what's important in our lives, and how we rationalize our decisions around money with our emotions way more than we should. Carl takes a look back on moments from the first 20 episodes of the show, and highlights some moments that you may have missed. Celebrity Chef and Food Network Star Maneet Chauhan reflects on growing up in India and how she never compared what she had to her peers (ie - life before Instagram)! Musician Lukas Nelson reveals how he writes music that is important to him and what he learned from his Dad, Willie Nelson, about the business of writing songs. Venture Capitalist Bryce Roberts opens up ‘The Devil's Golden Question', a deceivingly complex question that we should all be asking ourselves: “How much is enough…for you?” Comedian Gina Yashere from CBS's Bob Hearts Abishola tells Carl how she fell into comedy after pursuing a ‘safer' career as an engineer, and why her mother eventually supported her. And UCLA Professor Psychology and Behavioural Decision-Making Hal Hershfield unpacks some of the most revolutionary thinking behind Carl's conversation with Jamie, a diagnosed psychopath. As kids, we all heard someone tell us that it's wrong to lie...but as we grew older, we realized that people lie all the time. Politicians, presidents, and even executives at corporations tell lies—big and small. As citizens, there are obvious exceptions where lying is wrong, for instance; perjury, lying on your employment application, or lying to get a bank loan. But do we have a right to lie? And if so, what are the boundaries? On this episode, we speak with UCLA Professor of Philosophy and Law Seana Shiffrin and George Washington University Professor of Law Catherine Ross. They discuss both the philosophical arguments against lying and the legal arguments against notorious lies made by President Trump and former Congressman George Santos.
Cassie Holmes is an award-winning marketing professor at UCLA and the bestselling author of Happier Hour: How to Beat Distraction, Expand Your Time, and Focus on What Matters Most. Her book was called a “must read” by Forbes, the Washington Post, and the Financial Times, and was featured on the Today Show, CBS Mornings, CNN, NPR's Hidden Brain, and GOOP with Gwyneth Paltrow. Cassie's research has been published in leading academic journals, and the course she developed, Applying the Science of Happiness to Life Design, is among UCLA's most popular MBA classes. Prior to joining UCLA, Cassie was a professor at Wharton. She has a Ph.D. from Stanford's Graduate School of Business and a B.A. from Columbia. In this episode we discuss the following: The answer for greater happiness isn't having more time. It's making our time more fulfilling. Looking at data of hundreds of thousands of working and nonworking Americans shows that people with too little time were just as unhappy as people with too much time. However, 2-5 hours of discretionary time, plus using that time in meaningful ways, was the sweet spot for maximum happiness. Happiness isn't about being time rich. It's about making our time rich. One way to make our time rich is to track our time for a week, while also rating how we feel on a 10 point scale coming out of each activity. Initial data shows that social media can set subjective and arbitrary expectations for how we should spend our time, thus decreasing our feelings of time richness and fulfillment. When we feel “time poor” we stop helping others. But helping others makes our time more fulfilling thus reducing our feeling of time poverty. Time management has traditionally focused on maximizing productivity. But by slowing down and focusing on tasks that are more meaningful, like having a nice conversation with a colleague, spouse, or child, we can increase our happiness and reduce our feeling of time poverty. To increase your happiness, take your grandma to lunch. She'll have perspective, knowledge, and wisdom gained through experience on how to spend your time meaningfully. Ken welcomes tenured UCLA Professor and prolific author, Dr. Robert Chao Romero to the podcast. They discuss his new book: Christianity and Critical Race Theory: A Faithful and Constructive Conversation. CRT and “Wokism” have become misappropriated political tropes across the country. Dr. Romero and Jeff Liou have collaborated on a compelling book that makes an important contribution to the conversation, bringing correction, insight, and inspiration. The terms CRT and “WOKE” have been weaponized in a way that distorts their intended meanings and adds to our political, social, and spiritual polarization. A deeply committed Christian, Dr. Romero has been teaching CRT for many years in both undergraduate and graduate courses at the university, long before the terms appeared on the public scene. Equipped with a master's degree (UCLA) a law degree (UC Berkeley) and a Ph.D. (UCLA), Robert is uniquely positioned to demystify the controversy and represent a biblical perspective that challenges the popular notions that are being used to silence history, perpetuate misinformation and fuel racial animosities. In the 2010 landmark decision Padilla v. Kentucky, the Supreme Court held that the Sixth Amendment right to counsel demands that criminal defense attorneys inform their clients of adverse immigration consequences that may flow from a guilty plea. UCLA Law Professor Ingrid Eagly and her colleagues asked the critical question of whether public defenders are have adequately incorporated Padilla into their defense. Their findings not surprising “reveal a patchwork system in which each county in California has created its own approach to immigration advising.” Some counties have created full immigrant defense offices while many other counties have languagished: “They have not hired immigration experts, developed county protocols for immigration advising, or implemented immigration law training for their attorneys who accept indigent court appointments.” Listen as Professor Eagly discusses Padilla and its impact on public defenders in California.

The world today is deeply divided over politics, covid, race, culture, values, religion, and many other issues. Bridging that chasm is perhaps harder than it's ever been and yet maybe never more important than it is right now.
