This interview was originally recorded in April of 2022, when Auli'i Cravalho, who made a name for herself as the voice of Moana, was co-starring in Hulu's CRUSH (which is delightful, you should watch it!). Now, Auli'i will soon be hitting big screens as Janis Ian in the new movie adaptation of the MEAN GIRLS musical. With warm wishes for a bright New Year to all our listeners, we're delighted to bring you this all-time favorite episode, plus a brand-new One Quick Thing from Jordan about her favorite movie memories from 2023.***With Jordan Crucchiola and Auli'i Cravalho

Even if you don't know her name or face, you know her voice -- at 16, Auli'i Cravalho was the voice of Moana (and like Moana, she was a 16 year old Hawai'ian with a lot to carry). Now she's starring in live-action projects like Hulu's new queer high school rom-com, CRUSH, in which she plays the hardworking and mysterious A.J. But before all of that, Auli'i saw herself in another mold-breaking Disney princess, Fa Mulan. We're so excited to bring you this very special episode just in time for our first ever MaxFunDrive! Kaliko Beamer-Trapp was born on the Isle of Wight, England. He moved to the San Francisco Bay Area, joined a performing group named Dances of the Pacific and spent the following nine years as a performer of Polynesian music and dance both in California and also in group tours of England, Spain, Mallorca, Hawaiʻi, and Fiji. In 1994 he moved to the island of Hawaiʻi at the invitation of well-known Hawaiiana expert and cultural historian Aunty Nona Beamer (1923-2008). Being in Hawaiʻi brought about a deep affection for things Polynesian, and Kaliko focused his studies particularly on the languages and cultures of Hawaiʻi and the Marquesas Islands (Te Henua ʻEnana). He attended the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo and joined the Hawaiian Studies department at the University of Hawai'I both as a student and an employee in 1994. In 1996, he became the editor for Hawaiian language curriculum at the Hale Kuamoʻo, a Hawaiian language center on the university campus. That same year, Kaliko was adopted into the Beamer family in Waipiʻo Valley, after the late Louise Beamer, Aunty Nona's mother, suggested privately to Aunty Nona, "I wish Kaliko could be my moʻopuna (grandson.)". He speaks as an interpreter of a local language person wants to speak Hawaiian in court and also, as a musician understands how mele and oli music an chant are an important part of the language and are a big part of hula. Interview Date: 4/24/2019 Tags: Kaliko Beamer-Trapp, Aunty Nona Beamer, moon calendar, Mauna Kea, Hawaiian language, Battle of Kuamo'o, Arts & Creativity, History, Global Culture, Indigenous Wisdom
I had my talk story with Scott Head, VP Waikoloa Beach Resort at the 2019 HHSAA (Hawaii High School Athletic Association) Boys Golf Championship. Waikoloa Beach Resort was host to the 36 hole championship played at Waikoloa Beach Resort Kings' Course on the Big Island of Hawaii. The HHSAA is sponsored by David S. Ishii Foundation. Scott talks about the impact David, who Scott calls the best player to ever come out of Hawaii has made for high school players with his support. Scott also shares the commitment by Waikoloa Beach Resort to host junior, high school, college and professional tournaments. Waikoloa Beach Resort is a planned community and I have worked with them for a long time. I have admired how they have evolved gracefully during the ever present development on the Big Island. The Queens Marketplace and Kings' Shop serving locals and visitors everyday with great stores, restaurants and Hawaiiana entertainment and cultural events. Scott and I talk about how the hotels, condos, time shares, beaches, golf courses, hiking trails are there for all of us to enjoy. I sure do. On another note. Nice touch with David Ishii who is in the photo with Scott being on hand for the tournament. David, and his wife Lorraine and son presented the awards. Mid Pac's Jake Sequin won the individual state title and my friend Ethan Jaehn, a freshman playing for Coach Lee Kakawa at Kealakehe was third overall and low Big Island player. He edged out 5th place finisher from Kamehameha-Hawaii senior Pono Yanagi, the BIIF champion, by a stroke for top Big Islander honors. Hawaii Baptist won the team title with a 42-over 618. Second place was Mid Pacific (652). Iolani was third (655) and Waiakea (657) was close behind in fourth
