Is this really that important?! To some apparently it is! Hello, flute enthusiasts! This week on Talking Flutes, we dive into a topic that has sparked much debate within the flute-playing community: should we call ourselves flautists or flutists? takes us on an engaging journey through the history, cultural context, and personal preferences that shape this ongoing discussion. The origins of the terms flautist and flutist are as varied as the music we play. The word "flute" itself comes from the Latin "flatus," meaning blowing or breath, which is central to the instrument's identity. The term "flautist" first appeared in English literature in the early 19th century, derived from the Italian "flautista." This Italian influence was significant during a period when many English-speaking musicians looked to Italy for musical inspiration. But why did we borrow an Italian term when "flutist" already existed? Some suggest that "flautist" added a sense of sophistication and prestige, reflective of the European classical tradition. Others believe it was simply a matter of style and preference. Today's use of these terms varies by region. In the United States and Canada, "flutist" is overwhelmingly preferred, likely due to the American emphasis on linguistic efficiency. Major musical institutions like the National Flute Association have standardised this term. Across the pond in the United Kingdom, "flautist" is the term of choice, aligning with the British love for tradition and European musical terms. In Australia and New Zealand, the British influence means "flautist" is more common, though American influences bring some variation. In South Africa, British English has historically dominated, making "flautist" more prevalent. Interestingly, in non-English speaking countries, the term used is often a straightforward derivation of the word "flute," with less controversy. For instance, French speakers use "flûtiste," and Germans use "Flötist," both aligning more closely with "flautist." So, why does this matter so much to people? For many musicians, the term they use is closely tied to their identity. In the classical music world, where tradition is paramount, calling oneself a "flautist" connects to the rich history of European classical music. Conversely, "flutist" feels more modern and accessible, appealing to those who find "flautist" elitist or pretentious. The debate also has professional implications. In the US, using "flautist" might be seen as unusual, while in the UK, "flutist" might come across as overly Americanised. This choice can reflect broader questions of professionalism and authority within the flute community. Ultimately, whether you call yourself a flautist, flutist, or simply a flute player, what truly matters is the music you create and the connection you make with your audience. Language evolves, and so do we as musicians. So, let's celebrate the diversity in our community and focus on what unites us: our love for the flute. I've spoken about this before, but the subject seems to come up a lot, so why not go over it again: in America, 99.9 per cent of the people who play the flute for a living call themselves flutists, not flautists. That's not a scientific number, but I think it's pretty accurate.

Its keynote address by Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. has become the most famous speech in modern history. Echoed in his remarks that day were the paraphrased words of an early Unitarian minister, Theodore Parker; that the arc of the moral universe bends towards justice. Earlier this summer, the remarkable achievement of the Webb telescope began challenging humanity to look deeply into the past in order to make sense of today and what is to come. With passion and drive Nemo decided to tackle the age-old problems of inefficiency, discrimination, and inaccuracy in recruitment and HR in general. That's why he founded Sigma Polaris around a singular vision; Creating a world where HR analysis is based solely on meritocracy and where bias and discrimination are things of the past. Its mission: To change the world of work and shift how companies build, engage, retain, and capitalize on the use of diverse teams in today's workforce. And this inspired me, and hence I invited Nemo to my podcast. We explore what's broken in the way we recruit our talent today. That there isn't a talent problem, but a distribution problem - and how we can fix that with technology - in particular by removing bias and having to rely on intuition. Nemo shares the most important lessons learned from his startup journey. That building a business requires much more than just an amazing product. What advantage leveraging diversity gives them. And why his business couldn't have been what it is today without investing time in exercise i.e. taking care of himself. Here's a quote from him: There is a saying; 'you can get a book to be popular, by getting eight out of 10 people to like it, or by getting two out of 10 people to love it.' Now, when you are a giant, you need, most of the time, the eight out of 10. You need to be having almost all of the people you speak with think that at least you're interesting good. But I think as a startup, one of the things I've realized is this: we need to work with people that truly buy into it, the people that also believe in the mission. Because if you speak with them, sales cycles get shorter, and procurement gets easier. And all of a sudden, you get a reference, and you get a quote from every single client. And I think today, we've had a quote from almost every single client we have worked with because we choose clients that believe. Instead of trying to get tons of people interested, we try to get some people super excited. During this interview, you will learn four things: His strategy to be less 'all over the place' How you can create a 300% impact difference in a matter of just 3 months That you can get your product to be popular by getting 8 out of 10 people to like it or getting 2 out of 10 to love it That it doesn't matter how good your pitch deck is if it doesn't get shared. Indian Classical Music with Flautist Nitin Ron Part 2 (S2 | E76) What a pleasure it has been to get to know Indian Classical Music with Flautist Nitin Ron, my guest these past few weeks on Lester the Nightfly. We met at an event in the West Village in Manhattan in 2021. After some back and forth we conceived this show about mindfulness, meditation, neuroscience, and Indian Classical music. And it all came together beautifully. You can judge for yourself by listening to our part one of a two-part series. Author's Note: This is exactly the reason I do this radio show. I get to meet wonderful people, learn about the unfamiliar, and, maybe, contribute a tiny bit of musical scholarship to the world. Indian Classical Music with Flautist Nitin Ron. About Dr. Ron Baby doctor(neonatologist!) TED speaker, author, and neuroscience researcher, climbed Mt. Everest. Dr. Nitin Ron. Meditation. New life. High altitude hiking in the Himalayas. Listen to Neonatologist and mountaineer, Nitin Ron connect all three of these experiences in this extensive exploration of Indian Classical music. Indian Classical Music with Flautist Nitin Ron. Nitin is a neonatologist (baby doctor!) who loves high altitude trekking and mountaineering. An associate professor of pediatrics at New York Methodist Hospital, Nitin loves to use innovative methods to teach medical students. He has also been leading a research project in the Himalayas, including the Mt. Everest region, involving ultrasound of the eye (optic nerve) and the body, to predict mountain sickness. He has also looked at the effect of meditation in acclimatizing the body to high altitude. Nitin also volunteers as an art guide at the Rubin Museum of Himalayan Art in New York City, as a reminder to himself that medicine is as much art as it is science.
