If Disney is going to take a made for streaming series project and whip it up into a last minute theatrical release, they could at least give us Return of Jafar instead of Bambi 2. Moana does a poor job of catching the audience up on what some of our favorite characters have been up too since we last saw them through an adventure in such a superficial way. And once the film reveals itself to actually not be one-dimensional we're sailing midway through the 3rd act of a story that hopefully James Cameron won't feel the need to be inspired by since he's already made a billion dollars doing it with less heart. The songs aren't really memorable. The new characters aside from one we only get in the 2nd act aren't very memorable. The story we now know is actually part of a trilogy that might actually be going back to streaming after these box office numbers drop is also not memorable. And the Rock sings. There's still a lot of people's favorite things about Moana here, but this film deserved to be better and just doesn't feel like it was treated as such by the House of Mouse. Streaming now on Youtube, Apple TV, FandangoAtHome, Amazon Video, etc ♦♦ Director: Dana Ledoux Miller, Jason Hand, David Derrick Jr. Writers: Jared Bush, Dana Ledoux Mille Starring: Auliʻi Cravalho,Dwayne Johnson, Awhimai Fraser, David Fane, Rose Matafe, Hualālai Chung Runtime: 1 Hour 40 Minutes Synopsis: Moana returns as a young adult encouraged by the water spirits to set sail on a new adventure to find the other lost tribes of the sea beyond her side of the reef. Mele Kalikimaka as the ThawedCast covers 'Moana,' the monumental 2016 film from Walt Disney Animation Studios, directed by longtime Disney Animation dynamic duo John Musker and Ron Clements, and co-directed by Don Hall and Chris Williams. Bridget, Lara and Philip revisit the mythical ancient Polynesian world of Moana of Motunui (Auli'i Cravalho) and her adventures with the demigod Maui (Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson). Moana--a princess of sorts as the daughter of the chief--is faced with inheriting the leadership of an insular island nation that has abandoned its seafaring roots. However, she must learn to sail in order to restore the Heart of Te Fiti, a magical relic bestowed on her by the ocean. Failing in her mission would doom her island to a growing famine. Guided by her grandmother's spirit and the power of the ocean, she first seeks out the aid of the shapeshifter Maui. He reluctantly agrees to accompany her, first to retrieve his magical fishhook, and then to potentially face the perils posed by the demon Te Kā, who has corrupted the influence of the nature goddess Te Fiti. Robert Winfree, Alexis Hejna and Mark Radulich present their Moana 2 2024 Movie Review!Moana 2 is a 2024 American animated musical adventure film produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios for Walt Disney Pictures. It is the sequel to Moana (2016) and the second installment in the Moana franchise. The film was directed by David Derrick Jr., Jason Hand, and Dana Ledoux Miller (in their feature directorial debuts) and produced by Christina Chen and Yvett Merino, from a screenplay by Jared Bush and Miller. Auliʻi Cravalho, Dwayne Johnson, Temuera Morrison, Nicole Scherzinger, Rachel House, and Alan Tudyk all reprise their roles from the first film, with Hualālai Chung, Rose Matafeo, David Fane, Awhimai Fraser, Khaleesi Lambert-Tsuda, and Gerald Ramsey joining the cast.Development on a follow-up to Moana originally began as a long-form limited streaming series for Disney+, before it was reworked into a theatrical sequel by February 2024, with Derrick confirmed as both writer and director. The involvement of Hand, Miller, Chen, and Merino was confirmed in May; a month later, Bush was confirmed to be returning as a writer. Miller later replaced Derrick as a co-writer in August. Mark Mancina and Opetaia Foa'i, the composers and co-songwriters of the first film, returned to score and write the songs, while Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear replace Lin-Manuel Miranda as additional songwriters.Moana 2 premiered at the Lanikuhonua Cultural Institute in Kapolei, Hawaii, on November 21, 2024, and was released by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures in the United States on November 27. It's a shorter Empire Podcast this week, folks (blame Hollywood for shutting down for Thanksgiving, which is just plain selfish), but that doesn't mean it's any less jampacked with guests, greatness, and guesty greatness than usual. First, Chris Hewitt sits down with Auli'i Cravalho, Moana herself, to talk about returning for this week's Moana 2 and the art of not talking to people on planes. [16:03 - 29:35 approx] And then Ian Freer has an audience with... well, if not the Pope, then the next best thing in the guise of legendary trio Ralph Fiennes, Stanley Tucci, and Isabella Rossellini, the stars of new papal election thriller, Conclave. [46:49 - 1:04:52 approx] Either side of those, with Chris incapacitated by a last-minute case of neck-knack, Helen O'Hara hosts and is joined by James Dyer and Amon Warmann for a fun episode in which they discuss what they're thankful for this year, run their eye over what passes for movie news, and review Conclave, Moana 2, and Dear Santa. Oh, and Helen tries desperately not to do a Mount Rushmore question. Will she succeed? Find out by listening. Enjoy!

Distributed by @disneyanimation and @Disney Moana 2 is a sequel to the beloved 2016 film Moana starring Dwayne The Rock Johnson. Moana 2 follows Moana, who after receiving an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, must journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she's ever faced. Developed as a tv show, Moana 2 is directed by David Derrick Jr, Jason Hand, and Dana Ledoux Miller, and features a story by Jared Bush. Auli'i Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson reprise their roles as Moana and Maui respectively. Moana 2 releases worldwide on November 27.
Hey everyone, Moana and Maui are back with another adventure! The first Moana is one of the most popular and beloved Disney films of the modern generation; it has consistently been one of the most streamed films ever since it came out, especially once Disney+ launched back in 2019. Because of that, it's no surprise that Disney had a sequel on the way but the origins of this film are pretty interesting. It was originally going to be a Disney+ series but because Disney was so confident in how good it was, it was converted to a theatrical film. That news didn't exactly instill me with confidence but I also don't love the first Moana so I wasn't super invested in how the sequel would turn out. Is it one of the good animated films of 2024? Well, let's find out! Directed by: David Derrick Jr., Jason Hand, Dana Ledoux Miller Screenplay by: Jared Bush and Dana Ledoux Miller Story by: Jared Bush and Dana Ledoux Miller and Bek Smith Additional Screenplay Materials by: Bryson Chun Produced by: Christina Chen, Yvett Merino Executive Producers: Jared Bush, Dwayne Johnson, Jennifer Lee Music by: Opetaia Foa'i Casting by: Grace C. Kim Production Design by: Ian Gooding Art Direction by: Daniel Arriaga Cast: Auli'i Cravalho, Dwayne Johnson Synopsis: After receiving an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, Moana journeys alongside Maui and a new crew to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she's ever faced.
In the hit Disney film Moana, a girl (Auli'i Cravalho) finally gets her chance to see more of the world. And with a whole new batch of songs, in Moana 2, she's older and has a new purpose. With the help of her chicken, her pig, and her demigod pal Maui (Dwayne Johnson), Moana wants to reunite her island with people from across the ocean.Follow Pop Culture Happy Hour on Letterboxd at letterboxd.com/nprpopculture. It's our 500th episode! And this brief, mid-week pop-in is a great example of the wide range of films we like to cover here at Breakfast All Day. First, we review "Moana 2," the sequel to the 2016 Disney Animation hit. Auli'i Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson return for more ocean adventures and more monstrous foes. It's gorgeous, but the songs aren't nearly as good as they were in the original "Moana" without Lin-Manuel Miranda's touch. In theaters. Then we discuss "Maria," starring Angelina Jolie as legendary opera singer Maria Callas. Chilean director Pablo Larraín once again imagines what the inner life of this cultural icon might have been like, as he did with "Jackie" and "Spencer." This is also a gorgeous film, and Jolie is tremendous in it. In theaters now in limited release, streaming on Netflix starting Dec. 11. During this week of gratitude, we're especially thankful to you for being with us here, whether this is your 500th episode or your first. Thank you for sharing your time and your support. Let's keep it going! Have a great Thanksgiving, and we'll see you back here on Friday. Subscribe to Christy's Saturday Matinee newsletter: https://christylemire.beehiiv.com/
This episode is full of content! We talk Heretic, A Man on the Inside, Cabaret and Mama I'm a Big Girl Now, The Penguin, and the Arcane finale! The show opens with just Kevin and Lauren and Lauren takes the lead talking about the new thriller Heretic. It's not quite horror but it definitely has a solid creep factor! High Grant is a bona fide pyscho and the film itself does a lot to make one question religion. Not for the faint of heart! Kevin lightens things up with A Man on the Inside on Neflix. This is the story of a man who's a little lost in his life finding a job as a private investigator inside an old folks home. He doesn't find criminals but rather finds himself and some new friends along the way. Ted Danson is great in this "based on a true story" tale of love, life, and loss. Even though Andrew joins the fray, Kevin has Lauren take the lead once more with a couple of great Broadway shows she saw this week. First up is Cabaret starring Adam Lambert and Auli'i Cravalho of Moana fame. It's a great show in a great venue and definitely worth checking out. Next she geeks out a bit over Mama I'm a Big Girl Now which is a show by 3 of the founding members of Hairspray. It's a ton of fun to see how far these women have come and the storys and songs they share! Finally inviting Andrew into the fray, Kevin ask Lauren for her take on The Penguin, which she finally finished. It comes as no shock that she loved it as much as Kevin and Andrew did but it's always nice to get a fresh perspective on an excellent series. Lauren makes her exit and Kevin and Andrew go full bore on everything Arcane, including the big finale. Kevin absolutely loved it and Andrew is maybe a hair less bowled over (though he's come around a bit since recording) but they both do thoroughly enjoy the show and, if nothing else, they rave about the visuals. If you haven't seen Arcane (are you dead?!?!?) then get over to Netflix and watch it all ASAP! As always, thank you for watching. If you haven't already, don't forget to Like & Subscribe. We love new viewers! Also, leave us comments and let is know how we are doing and what we can be doing better. Enjoy the episode and have a great week! It's taken close to ten years for MOANA to get a sequel - an uncommon length of time for a movie so successful. Does it hold up as we prepare for the further adventures of Moana and Maui? Mean Girls is a film adaptation of the Broadway adaptation of the beloved Lindsay Lohan and Tina Fey comedy. The new cast includes Reneé Rapp, Auliʻi Cravalho, and Angourie Rice.
