Horn，1908–1993年）是德國復臨教會在該地區的傳教士，得到消息的他知道自己可能隨時會被捕入獄。儘管如此，他還是騎著摩托車去了教堂，在安息日晚上傳講耶穌受難的信息。夜晚他前腳剛到家，員警後腳就上門。他被逮捕之後，有整整六年多都無法見到心愛的妻子！ 在二戰期間，霍恩成了戰俘，先是被荷蘭人關押在印尼，後來又被英國人關押在印度。好在監獄裡有書可以讀，於是他自修了聖經原文語言，還給獄友上課。戰爭結束後，他移民到美國，在那裡完成了學業。他在約翰．霍普金斯大學短暫進修，師從威廉．奧爾布賴特教授（Professr William A. Albright），並於1951年在芝加哥大學獲得埃及學博士學位。如今霍恩博士已在安得烈大學復臨神學院任教廿五年，教授考古學和古代史。他為《基督復臨安息日會聖經註釋》中的〈創世記〉、〈出埃及記〉、 〈以斯拉記〉和〈尼希米記〉撰寫了多篇文章和註釋。他是《基督復臨安息日會聖經詞典》的主要撰稿人。此外，他還創建了神學院的博士課程，建立了安得烈大學考古博物館，擔任《安德烈大學神學研究》期刊的創刊編輯，發起並指導了在約旦的赫斯班（Hesbon，聖經中的希實本）的考古挖掘工作。 危機不一定總是帶來負面結果。危機也可以帶來新的開始或人生的新方向。雖然有些人仍然是悲慘環境的受害者，但總有人能找到方法利用環境來謀求最大的利益。對於霍恩來說，在牢獄中度過的那些年重塑了他整個職業生涯。你不應將生活中的危機視為阻礙，它們可以成為通往更光明之未來的階梯。記住，「我靠著那加給我力量的，凡事都能做。」（腓4：13）

Whenever God is getting ready to do a great work in this world, He is already preparing a great leader. He is looking for someone who has the spirit of humility and a servant's heart that He can trust to be obedient to His Word. Before God sent the flood, He found a Noah. When God was ready to birth the nation of Israel, He found a Abraham. When God needed a someone to lead His people out of slavery in Egypt, He found a Moses. When God was ready to transform Israel into a great Kingdom nation, He found a David. When the Lord was laying the foundation for His Church, He found a Peter. When God wanted to turn the world upside down with the Gospel, He found a Paul. God spent years preparing each one of these men for the great work they were called to do for God!   God spent at least forty years preparing Joshus to be the great leader that would move the people of Israel into Promise Land and conquer all the giants and enemies there and give each tribe their inheritance. When I was in Bible College, I heard a great pastor, Dr. Lee Roberson, make a statement I never forgot. He said, “Everything rises and falls on leadership.” This is so true. All our failures in our homes, in our churches, in our communities, and in our nation can be blamed on poor leadership!   If there were ever a time that we needed a new generation of great leaders for our homes, churches, nation, and the world, it is now! When read in Scripture about Joshua becoming the successor to Moses, I couldn't help but notice that it was prayer that prepared him for his great success as a leader.   When we first met Joshua as a soldier fighting with Amalek, Moses was on the hillside praying for his success. When Israel defeated Og, king of Bashan, and Sihon, king of Hesbon, Moses used that victory to encourage Joshua not to be afraid of his enemies. (Deuteronomy 3:21-22).    When Moses was preparing to die, he asked God to allow him to cross the Jordan and see the Promise Land, but God told him he could not cross over but that he would be allowed to see it. As Moses was praying, God also told him that Joshua would be the one to lead the people across the Jordan. “But command Joshua, and encourage him and strengthen him; for he shall go over before this people, and he shall cause them to inherit the land which you will see” (Deuteronomy 3:28).   Moses also prayed for a successor that would successfully lead the people. “Then Moses spoke to the LORD, saying: "Let the LORD, the God of the spirits of all flesh, set a man over the congregation, who may go out before them and go in before them, who may lead them out and bring them in, that the congregation of the LORD may not be like sheep which have no shepherd." And the LORD said to Moses: "Take Joshua the son of Nun with you, a man in whom is the Spirit, and lay your hand on him; set him before Eleazar the priest and before all the congregation, and inaugurate him in their sight. And you shall give some of your authority to him, that all the congregation of the children of Israel may be obedient” (Numbers 27:15-20)   My friend, if there were ever a time that we need to pray for God to give us godly leaders for our homes, churches and nation, it is now. Like Moses, Joshua was human and made his share of mistakes; but he was still God's chosen and anointed leader, and the people knew this. This is why they said to Joshua, "Just as we heeded Moses in all things, so we will heed you" (Josh. 1:17).   The secret of Joshua's success was his faith in the Word of God (Josh. 1:7-9), its commandments and its promises. God's Word to Joshua was "Be strong, be courageous, do not be afraid…!" (vv. 6-7, 9,18; and see Deut. 31:6-7, 23); and this is His Word to His people today.   May the Lord help us to pray for this kind of leadership today!

Again, just a reminder that today, Thursday February 29, I will be leaving for Jordan with a wonderful team to minister to Iraqi, Syrian, and Palestinian refugees. There are over one million refugees in the city of Amman Jordan. We sure would appreciate and covet your prayers for our team during this 10-day trip to a very special area of our world! This means that my daily pastor chats might not be so daily. I will do my best to post ministry updates, pastor chats, pictures and videos, as our time, schedule, and internet access permits. Psalm 136 describes creation of the world and the beginning and history of Israel all the way to the book of Judges in verses 23-25. But it also describes our spiritual journey as believers and followers of Jesus Christ. First in verses 1-9, we should never forget to remind ourselves that God is our creator. Next in verses 10-12, we rejoice that God is our Redeemer! He has brought us out of our bondage and set us free through the sacrifice of the Lord Jesus Christ! Yesterday we learned in verses 13-16, that God is our Shepherd Who brings us through the “wilderness” of life!   We have a God who not only created us, redeemed us and brought us out, shepherds us and brings us through, but in verses 17-22, we also have a God that conquers for us and brings us in! As the forty years drew to a close, Moses led the people back to the gateway into the Promised Land, and on the way, Israel defeated great and mighty kings and took their lands. In verses 19-20, two of them are mentioned by name, Sihon king of the Amorites, and Og king of Bashan. (Num. 21). These two kings are mentioned over fifty times in the Old Testament as a testimony of God fighting for and protecting His people! Several times when I was in Jordan, I have gone to a place located not far outside of Amman to a pile of stones that is called Hesbon, where Sihon had his fortress. You might remember that the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and the half tribe of Manasseh claimed their inheritance east of the Jordan River (Num. 32; Josh. 18:7), but their men marched with Israel into Canaan and helped to conquer the enemy and claim the land (135:10-12; Josh. 22). The land belonged to the Lord, but He gave it to Israel as their inheritance (vv. 21-22), and they would enjoy its blessings as long as they obeyed the covenant. Believers today have been delivered from sin through faith in Christ and are now in the "kingdom of the Son of His love" (Col. 1:13). Canaan is not a picture of heaven, for there will be no wars in heaven. It pictures our present inheritance in Jesus Christ, an inheritance that we claim as we walk by faith and defeat Satan and his forces that want to keep us in bondage and spiritual poverty. This is the theme of Hebrews 1-4. Peter assures us of our inheritance with these words in 1 Peter 1:3-8, “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled and that does not fade away, reserved in heaven for you, who are kept by the power of God through faith for salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while, if need be, you have been grieved by various trials, that the genuineness of your faith, being much more precious than gold that perishes, though it is tested by fire, may be found to praise, honor, and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ, whom having not seen you love. Though now you do not see Him, yet believing, you rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory”. God bless!

Daily Lectionary: Deuteronomy 2:16-37; Matthew 6:16-34 Do not be anxious about tomorrow. (Matthew 6:34) In the Name + of Jesus. Amen. What do Deuteronomy and the Sermon on the Mount have to do with one another? On the surface, it looks like these are very different writings. Our reading from Deuteronomy promises that the Israelites will defeat their enemies, while Jesus preaches that we should not be anxious because the Lord cares for us more than anything in all creation. Throughout history there have been various heresies which have claimed that the Old and New Testaments even have a different god, because so many things in them seem so unrelated, and even opposed to one another. Could the warlike God of the Exodus be related at all to the peaceful Jesus? It may be surprising, but these two readings are telling God's people the same thing: Don't worry, because the Lord is on your side. The Israelites are, yet again, face to face with enemies, and the Lord instructs them to have no fear because He goes before and after them. He fights for them. In the Matthew reading, Jesus speaks to people faced with different enemies, but enemies nonetheless. We are anxious and worried about all sorts of things. Money. Food. Homework. Degrees. Moab. Sihon, the King of Hesbon. Well, maybe not those last two. But you get the picture. God's people are always confronted with enemies. You will always be face to face with enemies of all sorts that seek to rob you of your peace. The Israelites were delivered from the hands of their enemies. They even triumphed over them! You are given victory over your enemies as well. The death and resurrection of Jesus Christ have given you peace which passes all understanding. Death and sin will have no power over you. Be strong in the Lord. Do not fear what comes tomorrow, for the Lord is on your side. You are Israel, taken out of slavery to sin and death, brought through the Red Sea of Holy Baptism, and fed in the wilderness with the Word of God, and even with His miraculous meal, the Lord's Supper. He fights for you, so you may live in peace. In the Name + of Jesus. Amen. Faint not nor fear, His arms are near; He changes not who hold you dear; only believe, and you will see that Christ is all eternally.
