The Geography of Wrath Part Two Before the LORD Destroyed Sodom Last week, we looked at The Geography of Wrath, a preface to this lesson on the danger of the last watch of the night. “Lot lifted up his eyes and saw all the valley of the Jordan, that it was well watered everywhere—this was before the LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah—like the garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt as you go to Zoar.” (Ge 13:10) When Lot “lifted up his eyes,” he saw prophetically. Before their destruction, the five cities of the valley enjoyed an Edenic-like climate and prosperity, yet the prophetic phrase “lifted up his eyes” predicts a restoration of that area, which sits in the Arava. Revelation predicts a great miracles of the two witnesses, which helps us to understand "Sodom and Egypt": "And their dead bodies will lie in the street of the great city which mystically is called Sodom and Egypt, where also their Lord was crucified." (Re 11:8) What Sodom and Egypt have in common is that those who were saved and set on a path of righteousness (Lot and the Israelites in the wilderness) looked back at what at enslaved them as more to be desired than the Garden of Eden, the authentic Promised Land, that lay before them if they would walk in their salvation. When the bodies of the two witnesses are caught up from Jerusalem, it is a witness to be understood as a last warning to believers who, in those last days, continue to cling to the cargoes of Babylon, who persist in begging to go "by way of Zoar to Egypt" instead of repenting and returning to the righteous walk of salvation epitomized by Avraham. The night is far spent by then. The commercial success of the five cities lured Lot in. The deception was that its fruitfulness “like the Garden” was to be desired over the fruitfulness of the stars promised to Avraham. Lot's wife preferred the deception of luxury with wickedness over the promise of good gifts from above. The Midrash concerning Sodom details how travelers were lured in, then maimed or killed and their goods confiscated. “When morning dawned, the angels urged Lot, saying, ‘Up, take your wife and your two daughters who are here, or you will be swept away in the punishment of the city.'” (Ge 19:15) The sun had risen over the earth when Lot came to Zoar. Then the LORD rained on Sodom and Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the LORD out of heaven, and He overthrew those cities, and all the valley, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and what grew on the ground. But his wife, from behind him, looked back, and she became a pillar of salt. Now Abraham arose early in the morning and went to the place where he had stood before the LORD; and he looked down toward Sodom and Gomorrah, and toward all the land of the valley, and he saw, and behold, the smoke of the land ascended like the smoke of a furnace. (Ge 19:24-28) Before Adonai destroyed Sodom, he sent warning of the wrath to come. Lot was aware of the blessings promised to Avraham, but he was also aware of the righteous life required for such eternal blessings. Lot chose precarious salvation over a life of obedience and teaching his children after him: “For I have chosen him, so that he may command his children and his household after him to keep the way of the LORD by doing righteousness and justice, so that the LORD may bring upon Abraham what He has spoken about him.” (Ge 18:19) Lot was troubled by the wickedness of Sodom, but not enough to forfeit living in it: “and if He rescued righteous Lot, oppressed by the sensual conduct of unprincipled men…” (2 Pe 2:7) It took the wrath of Adonai to remove him, not to abundant life, but bare salvation. “Insignificance” is the meaning of the small city Zoar in which Lot requested to live, and so was his contribution to the Kingdom of Adonai compared to Avraham. Avraham viewed the valley of Sodom and saw the smoke of the cities ascending like the smo...

Tareq Abu Hamed, Ph.D., and Rabbi Michael Cohen talk about the Arava Institute for Environmental Studies in Israel's Negev region. The nearly 30-year-old academic and research institution brings together students and faculty from Israel, the West Bank, Gaza, Jordan and elsewhere to build relationships and solve pressing environmental challenges. Arava is partnering with a Palestinian organization on a new plan to meet needs for water, sanitation, hygiene and energy in a devastated Gaza Strip that's years away from being rebuilt. Abu Hamed and Cohen each share how they hold on to hope in a seemingly hopeless time for those dedicated to regional peace. Theme song, “Ilu Finu” by Rabbi Miriam Margles. "Nature knows no political borders. " - David LehrerOn a small desert campus, students from Israel, Palestine, and other parts of the Middle East take classes in ecology, earth sciences and renewable energy. They also debate the hot button issues: history, politics, religion, war, occupation, terrorism, while learning to listen actively, and living together amidst contradicting narratives. Our guest David Lehrer is Director of International Development at the Arava Institute, based at Kibbutz Keturah in Israel. He teaches there, and also heads up Arava's action arm, working with Palestinian partners to bring clean water, sanitation, and eco-friendly temporary housing to displaced people in Gaza -- among other projects. Learning to care for a shared environment in the region, providing essential infrastructure in wartime, and working together across divides are usually treated as a footnote in the media, David says. But he hopes that as Arava continues to work with Palestinian partners in the face of a war with no end in sight,  peacebuilding becomes news. LEARN MORE:The Arava InstituteArava Institute on InstagramDavid Lehrer's bioTimes of Israel: Palestinians, Israelis partner to bring off-grid solutions to Gaza campsSpecial thanks to Tamar Miller and Rachel Kalikow. Day 355 - Even as it targets Tel Aviv, Hezbollah shows restraint

Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 20-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world. Military reporter Emanuel Fabian joins host Amanda Borschel-Dan on today's episode. Hezbollah took responsibility for the missile attack on central Israel this morning, claiming to have targeted the Mossad headquarters near Tel Aviv with a “Qader 1” ballistic missile in response to the pager and walkie-talkie explosions and the assassinations of top commanders in the terror group. Fabian analyzes the relatively restrained Hezbollah response even as Israel continues to target Hezbollah leadership and infrastructure. Hezbollah confirmed that Ibrahim Qubaisi, the commander of the terror group's rocket and missile division, was killed in an Israeli strike yesterday in Beirut. Who was he and how important of a target is he? This morning, the IDF issued a message in Arabic to Lebanese civilians who have evacuated their homes due to the presence of Hezbollah weapons, warning them it is not yet safe to go back. And on Monday, Israel published what it said was evidence of these Hezbollah munitions being placed in homes. What was this proof the IDF published? Several drones launched from Iraq overnight struck open areas in the northern Golan Heights and the Arava, according to the IDF. The Iran-backed Islamic Resistance in Iraq took responsibility. Fabian weighs in on when the IDF may respond more forcefully to these increasing attacks. We close the program with a brief update on what is happening on the ground in Gaza as the war against Hamas continues. For news updates, please check out The Times of Israel's ongoing live blog. Recording date: 28th June 2023Mark Selby discusses multiple nickel projects and provides insights into the current state of the nickel market. According to Mark Selby, the nickel price has finally reached the anticipated level of $9 per pound ($20,000 per ton), although there are concerns about a potential slowdown in China and the impact of inflation on rate hikes. Despite these concerns, Mark Selby expects the battery metals sector, including nickel, to rebound as restocking and increased demand in the battery supply chain continue. The discussion also touches on the behavior of other battery metals, such as lithium, which has seen a decrease in prices but remains significantly higher than a few years ago.Mark Selby highlights the impact of Russian nickel imports in relieving tight inventories in China, leading to a compression of premiums and a convergence of prices. Several nickel projects are mentioned, including Talon's permit application for a mine in Minnesota, Arava's drilling activities near the Kabanga deposit in Tanzania, Centaurus' acquisition of off-take rights for a nickel discovery in Brazil, FPX's progress in pre-feasibility studies, and Texmod's promising metallurgical results for their nickel project. Additionally, the discussion briefly touches on carbon capture and storage projects in Quebec, which have attracted interest from large companies seeking carbon storage solutions. Overall, Mark Selby provides a comprehensive overview of the nickel market and various projects making progress in the industry.

One of Jewish National Fund-USA's most groundbreaking initiatives, the Kasser Joint Institute for Global Food, Water, and Energy Security is a collaboration with the University of Arizona, the Arava regional councils, and Jewish National Fund-USA, that seeks to find applicable solutions to food security, water scarcity, and energy poverty particularly in arid environments. The plan is to branch out into Africa and provide technology transfer, applied research, knowledge, training, ongoing guidance, and education. Host Steven Shalowitz sits down with Tania Pons Allon, Director of the Kasser Joint Institute, to discuss the challenges facing the Arava, a few of the projects the Joint Institute is working on, and her journey from Tel Aviv to the desert.

Today's guest, Arava, reminded me of something that I think all of us know instinctually. Each person's life is really made up of a collection of stories. When we think about any person whom we know and love and want to describe that person to someone else, we start telling stories about them. We don't just say, ‘my son was kind or my son was funny.' We tell a story that shows their caring nature or demonstrates their humor. When Arava's 29-year-old son, Garett, suddenly died of an aneurysm, she turned to stories right away in her healing. Her sister, who is a rabbi, officiated at Garett's memorial service and asked all those in attendance to share stories with the family. We cannot truly make new memories after our child dies, but if others tell us new stories, we can almost get a new memory. Stories started coming to Arava as the family sat shiva in the first days after Garett's death. Now, one and a half years later, the stories come less often, but they still come. As each one comes, Arava takes time to write it down and is now compiling a book of stories to be shared with family and friends. The family also started a foundation in Garett's memory to keep his story alive (ghfg.org). Arava really made me think about the power of storytelling. I guess that is truly why I do the podcast each week. I want to give parents a chance to tell stories. I want everyone to get to know that parent's child a little bit. I want them to be appreciated and even a little loved by someone who might live on the other side of the world. These stories that we share with each other bring us closer together and even closer to our children. As Arava says this week, “Stories bring me such comfort. I feel like I have him back for a minute.” I want us all to feel like we have them back, even if it's just for a minute.

This evening we discuss the mysterious significance of Hoshana Rabba, the seventh day of Sukkot, and why it merits altering our Jewish calendar. We trace the apparently bizarre precedent of this day, and its connection to a Jewish wedding ceremony, and we explore the Kabbalistic import of the strange ritual of beating the Arava (willow branches). Ahavat Yisrael
The Four Species- The Jewish Body

Ahavat Yisrael

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 13, 2022

I'd like to put together two famous midrashim , to come away with a beautiful lesson in Ahavat Yisrael. The first midrash, which we've mentioned before, is that the Arba Minim/the four species correspond to four types of Jews. One of them, the Etrog, has taste and smell, which corresponds to a Jew who has Torah (which is taste) and good deeds ( which is smell). The Lulav , which comes from a date palm. It has flavor (from the date) but no smell, corresponding to our Jew who learns Torah, but does not do good deeds. Our next Jew is the Hadas , that has a good smell but doesn't have any flavor or any fruit. And that's why it says Esther is Hadassa . Because a lady's job is to do maasim tovim/ good deeds, not necessarily to learn Torah, therefore she doesn't have the fruit. And lastly, we have the Arava that has no taste and has no smell; that's the Jew that doesn't have either Torah or good deeds. We put all four species together and that creates the unity of Jewish people. Then there's another midrash that says that the four species correspond to four main organs in the body. The Lulav , which stands tall, corresponds to the spine, the Etrog , the pri etz hadar/ the beautiful fruit symbolizes the lev / heart . A “ Lev Tov encompasses everything” The Hadassim that look like eyes correspond to our eyes. And the Aravot are our lips. And the Aravot become wilted first because our lips are the things that get us into the most trouble. “ Life and death is the hands of the tongue. ” So those are the four species as symbols of the four organ parts of the body. And now we take the next leap, which is that if we view these four species as one body (that's what these species symbolize- Each organ has its own function and together they create the human body), then our four types of Jews also create one body, called the Jewish people. And that's the Mussar takeaway. The Yerushalmi tells us that antidote for Sinat Hinam is to realize that we're all one body. And just like if the right heel stubs the left toe, the left hand doesn't go and stab the right heel for stepping on the left toe. It's all one body, that would be ludicrous. So too, the Jewish people are one body. So these two midrashim link together, looking at the four species as organs in a body, and the four different types of Jewish people, in a sense, also as organs of one body- the body of the Jewish people. That's the Achdut/unity lesson that we take from the four species, as it pertains to being a human body. Have a wonderful day and a Hag Sameach.

Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 15-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world, from Sunday through Thursday. Political correspondent Tal Schneider and environment reporter Sue Surkes join host Amanda Borschel-Dan. Yesterday we heard the news that the Central Elections Committee disqualified former lawmaker and Yamina rebel Amichai Chikli from running on the Likud's candidate slate in the upcoming election. At the same time, fellow former Yamina MK Idit Silman is able to retain her spot. What's going on here? There are also petitions to disqualify two Arab parties from the upcoming elections: Islamist Ra'am and nationalist Balad. What are the chances they will be barred? New research suggesting that the extensive use of Arava desert vegetation to fuel the famous King Solomon's copper mines at Timna caused both the industry, and the local environment, to eventually collapse. Surkes fills us in. According to Israeli research, planting forests in drylands all over the world is unlikely to help in the fight against global warming and climate change. How does this affect Israeli reforestation? Just four months after arriving in Israel, former Greenpeace Russia media director Violetta Ryabko has penned a brochure for Israelis on ways to reduce plastic waste over the High Holidays. We hear some of her tips. Discussed articles include: Rebel ex-MK Chikli barred from running with Likud, which vows High Court appeal Wood cut to fuel King Solomon's ancient mines caused environmental collapse – study Planting trees in drylands unlikely to curb global warming, Israeli study shows How to do the holidays with zero waste, with an online guide Subscribe to The Times of Israel Daily Briefing on iTunes, Spotify, PlayerFM, Google Play, or wherever you get your podcasts. This week on the Film at Lincoln Center podcast, we're featuring a programmer's preview on our Kinuyo Tanaka Retrospective, and a Q&A from the 59th New York Film Festival with director Nadav Lapid on Ahed's Knee,  moderated by NYFF Programmer Rachel Rosen. As an actress in over 250 films, Kinuyo Tanaka was one of the most celebrated and wildly popular artists of her time, regularly collaborating with consummate masters like Yasujirō Ozu, Kenji Mizoguchi, and Mikio Naruse. Between 1953 and 1962, Tanaka directed half a dozen films with a determined sense of freedom and touches of provocation, placing women at the forefront of her movies as mistresses, prostitutes, poets, heroines, and victims of social injustice. The Kinuyo Tanaka Retrospective, featuring brand new 4K restorations of her directorial work and 35mm screenings of her collaborations as an actor, takes place March 18 - 27! Listen to an introduction to the filmmaker from Assistant Programmer Tyler Wilson and rediscover the groundbreaking auteur at filmlinc.org/tanaka. Also opening this Friday, Ahed's Knee is Israeli filmmaker Nadav Lapid's shattering follow-up to his bat-out-of-hell Synonyms (NYFF57). A film of radical style and splenetic anger, Ahed's Knee accompanies a celebrated but increasingly dissociated director to a small town in the desert region of Arava for a screening of his latest film. Already anguished by the news of his mother's fatal illness (Lapid's film was made soon after the death of his own mother, who had worked as his editor for many years), he grows frustrated with a speech-restricting form he is encouraged to sign by a local Ministry of Culture worker. The confrontation ultimately sends him into a spiral of rage aimed at what he perceives as the censorship, hypocrisy, and violence of the Israeli government. This boldly shot and conceived work, which won the Grand Jury Prize at this year's Cannes Film Festival, feels as though it has welled up from the depths of its maker's soul. Ahed's Knee opens this Friday with filmmaker Q&As at the 6pm screenings on Friday and Saturday, and a special Film Comment Free Talk with Lapid at 8:30pm on Friday. (Sukkot is the seven-day holiday that begins on the 15th day of Tishrei.)However, after the destruction of the Beit Hamikdash, our Sages enacted that everyone should take the four species for all seven days of Sukkot. Also, we don't take them on Shabbat. How is "to take the four species" defined? The minimum requirement is to hold all four species, bring them together, and lift.We recite a blessing beforehand. They should be held in the position that they grow, right-side up.As part of our prayers, we move the species in six directions (north, east, south, west, up, & down).

Vedic roots of Saudi Arabia, Shiva Linga in Mecca, 786 is flipped OM of Hinduism, Prophet Mohammed's Uncle's Poem, Siva Stuthi.Hindu Symbols, Saraswati, Rishi in Arabi can be fou Sapthapathi, Sarasvati , Navagraha were present in Arabia , pre dating Muhammad . For the last post, I received comment in Facebook asking me not to be foolish about Islam and went on to trace the geneology of Arabia(!?) from the Koran! I did not seem it fit to reply to the comment. This comment made me research further about the Vedic roots of Arabia. Arabia is from the Sanskrit word Asva, Arava meaning Horse and Sthan, Place. Arabia is thus the place of Horses. Ancient Tamil Literature abounds in reference to Arabia as the land of Horses and all the Ancient Tamil Kings, Chera, Chola and Pandyas imported Horses from Arabia.   The major land route  to Arabia was from the North West of India and the Arabic people drew spiritual inspiration from India. ‘The Uttarapath (Northern Highway) was the international highway to the North of India. It was via Uttarapath that Arabia and other Middle Eastern countries drew their spiritual, educational and material sustenance from India. Besides, this Sea-links were formed with India at least 800 years before the advent of Islam. Basra was the ancient gateway to India because it was at this port that the Arab lands received Indian goods and visitors. At that time the spoken language was Sanskrit, which later dwindled into the local variation that we now call Arabic. Thousands of words that were derived from Sanskrit still survive in Arabic today. SanskritArabicEnglishSagwanSajTeakwoodVishBeshPoisonAnusariAnsariFollowerShishyaSheikhDiscipleMrityuMoutDeathPra-Ga-ambarPaigambarOne from heavenMaleenMalaunDirty or soiledAapatiAafatMisfortuneKarpasKaifasCottonKarpurKafurCamphorPramukhBarmakChief   Even various kinds of swords were referred to as Handuwani, Hindi, Saif-Ul-Hind, Muhannid and Hinduani. The Sanskrit Astronomical treatise Brahma-Sphuta-Siddhanta in Arabic translation is known as Sind-Hind, while another treatise Khanda-Khadyaka was called Arkand. Mathematics itself was calledHindisa . The Arabs derived technical guidance in every branch of study such as astronomy, mathematics and physics from India. A noted scholar of history, W.H. Siddiqui notes: “The Arab civilization grew up intensively as well as extensively on the riches of Indian trade and commerce. Nomadic Arab tribes became partially settled communities and some of them lived within walled towns practised agriculture and commerce, wroteon wood and stone, feared the gods and honored the kings.” Some people wrongly believe that Arabs used the word Hindu as a term of contemptuous abuse. Nothing could be further from the truth. The people of pre-Islamic Arabia held Hinduism in great esteem as evidenced from the fact that they would endearingly call their most attractive and favourite daughters as Hinda and Saifi Hindi. The fact that Arabs regarded India as their spiritual and cultural motherland long before the damaging influence of Islam is corroborated by the following poem which mentions each one of the four Vedas by name . English translation.Oh the divine land of HIND (India) (how) very blessed art thou! Because thou art the chosen of God blessed with knowledge. That celestial knowledge which like four lighthouses shone in such brilliance – through the (utterances of) Indian sages in fourfold abundance.”God enjoins on all humans, follow with hands down The path the Vedas with his divine precept lay down.”Bursting with (Divine) knowledge are SAM &YAJUR bestowed on creation, Hence brothers respect and follow the Vedas, guides to salvationTwo others, the Rig and Athar teach us fraternity, Sheltering under their lustre dispels darkness till eternity” Lby Labi-Bin-E- Akhtab-Bin-E-Turfa who lived in Arabia around 1850 B.C. Today on the show I have the pleasure of chatting with 25 years old, Chad The Beast Hardy. Chad is probably best known for occasionally appearing on the very popular Chewjitsu YouTube channel. Chad actually earned his Black Belt under Nick Chewy Albin himself and was assistant head instructor at Derby City MMA in Louisville, KY. Chad is now a head instructor at Guardian Mixed Martial Arts in Murfreesboro, TN This is a young man at an exciting inflection point in his life, newly engaged with a great job and creating great products with so much runway in front of him and the wind at his back. In contrast to the present, in the episode, you will hear me allude to much of Chad's earlier years being comprised of so much sadness and tragedy. Let me give you some context, Chad is originally from Bloomington, IN, and before the age of 5 his mother passed away, soon after, his father was shot in the head and fell into a coma for over a year, for that duration he was cared for by his grandmother. After that year his father came out of the coma and moved them away from the gang plagued area they lived in, to another crime and violence-filled area of Louisville, KY. On his first day at the new school, in the new town, Chad was punched in the face for no reason, he was robbed twice in one month, witnessed a shooting directly in front of his apartment, was regularly assaulted for simply trying to come home from school, his drug-addicted aunt would attempt to steal from them, and at age 15 he lost his beloved grandfather and uncle, all of this resulted in Chad one day ingesting a bottle of pills, only to awake in a hospital from a failed suicide attempt, surrounded by those he loved and that loved him and fortunately for all, this is where the story does not end, but rather begins. There are trees that remain strong and durable and even thrive in the most hostile conditions. In a study, scientists found that the acacia tree in the Arava desert in Israel is the world's largest tree growing in such a hot and dry climate. The tree has an even higher growth rate during the hot, rain-free desert summers than during the slightly wetter winters, and scientists continue to research into its remarkable resilience and how it might provide valuable information to us. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/foreverwhitebelt/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/foreverwhitebelt/support
