Why Are We Shouting? with Jill Salzman

What's In This Episode: Are you one of those people that's good at predicting the next big business craze? Jill's lived through plenty of fads – those products and people and exercise regimens and diet suggestions that have come and go. We know what they are once they've gone bust, but it's hard to tell a hot trend from something sensational that's here to stay. Can we ever learn how to predict these things so that we know where to pay attention while we're building our businesses? Jill Salzman turns the mundane into inspiration and transforms the impossible into the achievable. Through defying expectations and breaking the rules, she succeeds in inspiring entrepreneurs to figure out what works for them by using meaningful action to create positive results. Jill is the author of The Best Business Book In The World* (according to my mom) and the Amazon best-seller, Found It: A Field Guide for Mom Entrepreneurs. She's shared the speaker stage with Richard Branson, Sheryl Sandberg, Daymond John, Marilu Henner, and Desmond Tutu among others, and professed her love of Eddie Vedder in her TEDx talk on 11/11/11. She hosts the top-rated entertaining business podcast, Why Are We Shouting?, a question she asks herself daily. CNNMoney calls her a “mommy mogul.” MSN Live says she's a “Cool Mom Entrepreneur We Love.” Forbes rated her a Top 100 Champion Small Business Influencer and voted The Founding Moms one of the Top 10 Websites For Entrepreneurs. When she's not speaking to audiences in patterned leggings or podcasting from her basement, she fruitlessly tries to convince her daughters that cassette tapes actually existed.

This companion piece of sorts to our previous Wonder Woman episode explores the character's reboot as part of the 2011 New 52 relaunch of DC titles—a reboot that takes the Greek mythology that's always been a part of her world and moves it front and center by revealing her to be the daughter of Zeus, king of the Greek pantheon! Sure, we’re supposed to work it out before launch day, but it doesn’t always work that way. We are fixing it as fast as we can and we thank you so much for your patience with us. There are so many things in our lives that we are trying to optimize to help us become more productive with our time. For some people, productivity can bog them down. But for us, we really appreciate routines and systems. John gives his breakfast frittata recipe! Check it out! What’s In This Episode: Are you a Type 1 or Type 2 thinker? The difference may be playing out in how you sell, too. But he's considering simplifying his business, which might alienate a good chunk of his audience that describes themselves as DIY'ers. What should he do? Jill thinks he may benefit from carving out more of a niche while Brad suggests he does a little more market research on the types of audiences he wants to work with. "Even if you tell people to back off, they don't know how to do that. Is that teachable?" - Jill If you're trying to close a deal too fast, Brad says, you're telling people that you're not good at sales - and also that you may be a little bit desperate. Jill thought about her favorite podcast guest: Erika Kerekes of Not Ketchup, who took Jill's interesting marketing advice and it worked out for her! She also has a story about a guy who had a very creative way to get someone to sign up for life insurance. Brad had a customer who got ghosted by an employee. They passed each other as they were going in and out of an elevator, but the customer didn't realize that the employee had quit until she got to her floor. He also knew a guy who would send phones out to people via FedEx, then call those people once the package had been received. Saul's takeaway? "Weird works." "They need instruction. They need guidance. Is there something you need that can make your job easier?" - Jill Jill and Brad then discuss the top 5 ways managing employees needs to change: Everyone needs to use Slack. Ask them what they need more often. Listen when employees tell you something is not working. Be a proponent of having your employees work together more often. And the number one thing is something you really should be doing...
