The Magnesium in Your Cabinet Is Doing Nothing — Here's the Right Form

Heal Thy Self with Dr. G

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 3, 2026 10:31

Episode Description: The magnesium sitting in your cabinet right now is probably one your body can barely absorb. Most people buy it for sleep, for anxiety, for leg cramps, or for constipation, feel nothing, and conclude that magnesium does not work. Magnesium works. You just bought the wrong kind, and nobody told you there was a wrong kind. 70% of people are deficient in magnesium. Most of them are taking magnesium oxide, which has about 4% absorption. The other 96% moves through you and loosens your stools. But the bigger problem is that magnesium is not one supplement. It is a family of forms, and the form on the label decides the entire job it does in your body. Dr. G breaks it down — in order: Take 1: "You just bought the wrong kind and nobody told you" Dr. G exposes the magnesium oxide scam hiding in plain sight on every drugstore shelf and in most cheap multivitamins. Find out why the form on the label is more important than anything else and how companies hide what is actually inside the bottle. Take 2: "The form that fixes your sleep is not the same form that fixes your cramps" Magnesium glycinate is the calming form backed by a randomized placebo controlled trial showing measurable sleep improvement. Dr. G gives the exact dose, the exact timing, and the label trick companies use to underdose you while making the number on the front look impressive. Take 3: "This one actually crosses your blood brain barrier" Magnesium L-threonate was specifically designed to raise magnesium levels inside the brain, where it supports the connections between neurons. Dr. G breaks down the randomized controlled trial data on memory and cognition and explains why cheap versions of this form are almost always a waste of money. Take 4: "Stress is burning your magnesium faster than you can replace it" The same fight or flight response keeping you wired at night is draining your mineral reserves all day long. Dr. G explains why chronic stress, sugar, alcohol, and heavy caffeine make you dump magnesium through your urine, and why the supplement only works in its full glory when the nervous system is also being addressed. Glycinate for sleep and anxiety. Malate for muscles and daytime energy. L-threonate for brain fog and memory. Citrate for the gut. Oxide for almost nobody. Product reviews assess both brand transparency and product quality. If a company doesn't respond to our outreach, it doesn't automatically mean their product is low quality but it does mean they're failing their customers on transparency and communication. We reach out multiple times. No response isn't an oversight, it's a choice. And consumers deserve better. Jason was recently a guest on the Restoring Human Movement Podcast about:  Strength training structure + mistakes (ideal for endurance runners) Why strength train in the first place?  Protein needs for runners (age, activity, etc.) The type of strength training that improves running economy Thank you to Dr. Mandy Riehl for hosting an amazing discussion! Learn more about strength training here. Thank you Kila! Kila offers the world's lightest insoles. Made with super shoe foam, they're 65-70% lighter than most orthotics and worn by elite runners like UTMB champ Tom Evans. Go to kilarun.com and use code STRENGTHRUNNING for $50 your first pair. Truthfully, I'm skeptical of insoles. I once had orthotics and they were heavy, they gave me blisters, and they weren't comfortable at all. Most importantly: they didn't help me. Kila is different: lighter, more comfortable, with no doctor visits and no hassles with insurance. All you need to do is scan your feet at home using your iPhone. It takes less than 5 minutes and Kila then uses a lab to design your insoles, build them from scratch, and ship them directly to you. If you're already wearing insoles, Kila's are a game-changer. Level up your insole game with the lightest custom insoles on the market - no clinic markup, no visit to a specialist, and you get the benefit and comfort of super shoe foam. Go to kilarun.com and use code STRENGTHRUNNING to upgrade your insoles and save $50 on your first pair. Thank you LMNT! A big thanks to LMNT for their support of this episode! They make electrolyte drinks for athletes and low-carb folks with no sugar, artificial ingredients, or colors. They are offering a free gift with your purchase at LMNT. And this does NOT have to be your first purchase. You'll get a sample pack with every flavor so you can try them all before deciding what you like best. And DOUBLE big news! Their newest flavor Lemonade Salt is now permanently available (it's now my favorite). They're also offering 12oz cans of sparkling LMNT water that has half the sodium concentration of a packet. Check them out. LMNT's products have some of the highest sodium concentrations that you can find. Anybody who runs a lot knows that sodium, as well as other electrolytes like magnesium and potassium, are essential to our performance and how we feel throughout the day. LMNT is my favorite way to hydrate. I'm now in the habit of giving away boxes of LMNT at group runs around Denver and Boulder and everyone loves this stuff. Boost your performance and your recovery with LMNT. They're the exclusive hydration partner to Team USA Weightlifting and quite a few professional baseball, hockey, and basketball teams are on regular subscriptions. So check out LMNT to get a free sampler pack and get your hydration optimized for the upcoming season. Thanks Boulderthon! Boulderthon is a top 10 race in America according to USA Today and one of the best fall marathons according to Runner's World. With a 5k, 10k, half marathon, and marathon, Boulderthon offers an amazing fall destination race weekend right at the foothills of the Rockies. Use code STRENGTH20 for $20 off the marathon or half marathon. Join me in Boulder, one of the top running destinations in the country, on September 27th, to experience the tight knit running community here, race on the epic streets of Boulder, and finish on historic Pearl Street. While I live in Denver, I travel to boulder probably once a week to run. It's arguably one of the best running locations in the United States. There'll probably be cool and crisp fall weather for racing fast, too. And don't worry, Boulderthon is a BQ-eligible, USA Track & Field Sanctioned Event. Boulderthon is on track to sell out again this year so don't miss out. Use code STRENGTH20 to save $20 on the marathon or half-marathon here and I hope to see you in Boulder this fall.

Looking for Student Leadership Curriculum?  We've just launched our own called "Student Leadership Journey!"  Grab yours here: Student Leadership Journey.  *** If your youth ministry is small, “student leadership team” can sound like something for bigger churches with bigger budgets and a bigger youth group. We see it the opposite way. A small youth group is the perfect opportunity for building a healthy core of students who serve, grow, and set the tone the second a new kid walks through the door. When the culture is concentrated, it is instantly noticeable, for better or worse, and that is why a student leadership team can become your biggest lever for youth ministry health. We get practical about the fear almost every youth pastor has: “What if everyone applies?” We also talk about how to keep leadership from becoming a carbon copy of youth group by making it a different tempo with a clear focus on biblical leadership, character, and real responsibility. Along the way, we share hands-on coaching ideas, from assigning roles that fit students' gifts to giving simple weekly challenges that train students to notice and include first time visitors. Then we dig into the “close vs closed” tension that shows up fast in smaller ministries. We lay out how to build a core that is genuinely close without feeling cliquey, and we give concrete ways to train students to welcome first-time visitors. You will also walk away with a list of serving roles inside the church and service projects outside the church that work especially well with a small, mobile student leadership team. This Fall, we are teaming up with Onward Leadership for a Fall Cohort!!!  If you are interested in joining or simply looking for more information, please visit: www.onwardleader.comIf you are ready to build a student leadership team that fuels real discipleship and sustainable growth, listen now, then subscribe, share this with another youth pastor, and leave a quick ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ review so more leaders can find it. =======You may also enjoy these episodes:(#040) How to Start a Student Leadership Team in Youth Ministry(#254) 5 Secrets to Creating a Strong Student Leadership Team in Youth Ministry!(#253) 3 Ways to Encourage Your Youth Group to Join Your Student Leadership Team(#203) Create a Student Leadership Team that Your Youth Group WANTS to Be a Part Of!(#304) 5 Mistakes that Youth Pastors Make With Student Leadership TeamsNavigating the Cliques in Youth Ministry Student Leadership Teams=======We love hearing from you all and we do our best to provide powerful and insightful youth ministry content on a weekly basis to be that coach and mentor you may not have, but desperately need.If you have an episode idea, please E-Mail us at MinistryCoachPodcast@gmail.com!If you have it on your heart to support this ministry, please consider going to our Patreon page at: www.patreon.com/ministrycoach=========

Imagine a country where the government gets to decide who gets to be counted, and who doesn't. Sounds like a pretty dystopian scenario, right? But this is actually what's happening in the United States, where the Census Bureau's own report card reveals a shocking truth: the 2020 count was wrong, and it's not just a minor mistake. The Bureau's internal audit found that 14 states were undercounted, while eight were overcounted, with some states losing or gaining seats in Congress and electoral votes as a result. This episode delves into the consequences of a flawed census count, where the numbers don't add up and the stakes are high. We explore the impact on states like Florida, Tennessee, and Colorado, where the undercount has real-world effects on representation and power. But it's not just about politics - the Census Bureau's mistakes also have a human cost, particularly for marginalized communities like Hispanic, black, and Native American residents who were disproportionately missed. The speaker takes a closer look at the numbers and the Bureau's own words, revealing a complex web of errors and biases that have led to this mess. We also examine the Trump administration's response to the issue, including a proposed new count that would separate citizens from non-citizens. But is this a step in the right direction, or just a way to further complicate the already broken system?Tune in to this episode to learn more about the Census Bureau's mistakes, the consequences of a flawed count, and the implications for our democracy. Join the conversation and share your thoughts on how we can do better in the next census.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

You'll learn how parts of Medicare work, which expenses Medicare doesn't cover, how to fill insurance gaps, avoid lifetime penalties, and the truth about costly Medicare myths.Key Takeaways:Medicare Part A covers hospital and inpatient care (premium-free for most), while Part B covers doctor visits and outpatient services for a monthly premium ($202.90 in 2026).Medicare Advantage (Part C) is an all-in-one alternative that bundles Parts A, B, and usually D into a single plan with network restrictions and out-of-pocket caps, often adding basic dental and vision coverage.Original Medicare doesn't cover long-term care such as assisted living or nursing home stays, or routine dental, vision, and hearing care.Medigap protects against out-of-pocket costs, such as deductibles and 20% coinsurance left behind by Original Medicare, but it cannot be combined with Medicare Advantage.Missing your Initial Enrollment Period triggers lifetime penalties unless you have active, creditable employer health coverage. Enrollment isn't automatic unless you already receive Social Security benefits when you turn 65. https://teachhoops.com/ Are These Three Mistakes Quietly Wasting Your Practice Time? The common habits that eat reps, energy, and player attention Most wasted practice time comes from a handful of repeatable errors, and almost every coach makes at least one of them. Coach Collins names the three biggest offenders and gives a fix for each. Mistake 1: Talking too much Long explanations kill reps. Teach in short bursts, get them playing, then correct on the fly. If you're talking for two minutes, you've already lost half the gym. Mistake 2: Standing in lines Too many players waiting, too few moving. Break into small groups, use multiple baskets, and choose drills that keep every player active. Mistake 3: No score, no standard, no consequence Work without a winner turns into going through the motions. Put a score, a time limit, or a target number on almost everything. Also covered Planning practice on paper with time stamps, then actually honoring the clock Closing every segment with one clear teaching point Evaluating practice by reps and energy rather than by how much you said Coaching point Judge your practice by what your players did, not by what you explained. Try this week Have someone time how long you talk during one practice. The number usually surprises people. https://teachhoops.com/ TitleSubtitleShow Notes Learn more about your ad choices. PPO participation can quietly erode profitability when fees, network relationships, and write-offs are not regularly reviewed. In this episode, Kirk Behrendt talks with Clinton Johnson, founder of Profitable PPOs, about the hidden PPO mistakes that can cost dental practices seven figures over time. Clinton explains how PPO network structures work, why reimbursement has failed to keep pace with rising practice costs, how to evaluate the true financial impact of each plan, and why dentists should build a PPO strategy around their practice goals rather than making emotional decisions. Learn how to audit PPO participation, identify low-profit plans, improve reimbursement, and strategically move toward greater profitability and autonomy — listen to Episode 1094 of The Best Practices Show!Main Takeaways:PPO reimbursement has not kept pace with inflation and rising practice expenses, forcing many dentists to work harder to maintain previous income levels.Dentists can participate in PPOs through direct contracts, network share agreements, or umbrella companies, and those options can produce significantly different reimbursement levels.A PPO strategy should be designed around the practice's priorities, including profitability, broad network coverage, and administrative simplicity.PPO write-off percentages can be misleading when a practice's office fees are not appropriately set for its geographic market.Dentists should review EOBs and conduct a comprehensive PPO audit approximately every 18 to 24 months to verify network participation, fee schedules, and opportunities for improvement.Practices considering PPO reductions should use financial data and generally begin with smaller plans that have poor reimbursement rather than making large changes based on frustration.PPO optimization should include analysis, strategy development, financial modeling, implementation, and verification that insurers are paying the expected fees.Episode Chapters:00:00 Introduction to hidden PPO mistakes that can cost a practice seven figures.01:11 Kirk introduces Clinton Johnson and the complexity of PPO participation.03:57 Why dentists are producing more without necessarily becoming more profitable.05:58 Three ways dentists can participate in PPO networks.09:51 Why PPO write-off percentages can be misleading.12:08 Clinton explains the PPO profit ladder.13:41 The long-term financial and practice-value impact of poor PPO reimbursement.16:16 Why dentists need to monitor EOBs and identify missed upside opportunities.21:03 How to evaluate which PPOs are helping or hurting the practice.24:55 Why traditional PPO fee negotiation is less effective than it once was.27:09 When dentists should stay in a PPO or consider leaving.30:00 Risks of leaving a PPO without a structured plan.31:41 How PPO strategy can support independent dentistry.34:21 Which practices are and are not a good fit for PPO optimization.37:28 Clinton explains the Profitable PPOs analysis and strategy process.41:30 How to contact Profitable PPOs.42:00 Closing thoughts on profitability, independence, and practice ownership.Guest Bio:Possessing over twenty years of experience working with dental offices, Clint Johnson is passionate about helping practice owners optimize their PPO plan participation and profits. As the founder of Phoenix-based Profitable PPOs, Clint has focused that passion by helping ensure dentists participate with the right PPOs, in the right way, and for maximum reimbursement. Hundreds of dental practices every year, across the United States, big and small, look to Profitable PPO to provide the insurance participation management needed to make the most of their profitability–both in the present and in years to come. For Clint, dentistry has always been a family matter, with his father, grandfather and great-grandfather all dentists. The experience of seeing both the benefits, and the challenges, in dentistry inspired him to help doctors optimize their practices. Clint knew there had to be a way to help those in the dental field deal with the challenges and costs associated with insurance participation… And that challenge was the impetus behind the creation of Profitable PPOs.In addition to his work with Profitable PPOs, Clint is also an author and a frequent presenter at dental conferences. In his free time, he enjoys reading, skiing, scuba diving, and traveling with his wife and three children.Episode Resources:Profitable PPOs: https://profitableppos.com/Phone: 855-PPO-GAINMore Helpful Links for a Better Practice & a Better Life:Contact Gina to learn more about ACT: gina@actdental.comThe Best Practices Show: https://www.actdental.com/podcast/Smile Source Community Hub: https://www.actdental.com/community-hubUpcoming Events & Workshops: https://www.actdental.com/events/Smile Source: https://www.smilesource.com/Subscribe on Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.comSubscribe on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com

What if the biggest thing holding your dealership back isn't the market, the leads, or even the competition... but the habits happening inside the store every single day? "The biggest bad habit you have is that you allow your employees to run your dealership." - Sean V. Bradley In this episode of the Millionaire Car Salesman Podcast, Sean V. Bradley and LA Williams take a hard look at the small, repeated behaviors that can quietly limit performance across every level of a dealership, from salespeople to leadership. "You've got to expect greatness from yourself." - LA Williams The conversation explores how complacency, inconsistent follow-up, underused technology, negative thinking, and drifting away from proven processes can slowly become part of the culture if they are not addressed. Sean and LA also challenge automotive professionals to think bigger about ownership, accountability, and personal growth, including what it really means to maximize the tools, training, opportunities, and resources already available to you. "If you don't know the tools inside and out, you're only using 10% or 20% of the potential value of it." - Sean V. Bradley If you are serious about becoming sharper, more disciplined, and more intentional in your career, this conversation will definitely make you look at your daily routine a little differently! Key Takeaways: ✅ Many sales professionals fail to fully utilize the advanced tools and systems available at their dealerships, thereby limiting their potential success. ✅ Developing a proactive mindset and treating car sales as an entrepreneurial endeavor can significantly enhance individual and dealership success. ✅ Effective training and personal development go beyond learning sales tactics, encompassing mastery of digital marketing, customer relationship management, and personal branding. ✅ Managers and dealer principals need to enforce accountability and ensure their teams adhere to proven processes, instead of allowing complacent behaviors. ✅ Reflecting on personal weaknesses and embracing continuous improvement can lead to personal and professional transformation.   About Sean V. Bradley Sean V. Bradley is a renowned entrepreneur, keynote speaker, and CEO of Dealer Synergy, a company specializing in training and consulting automotive dealerships to improve sales and operations. With over two decades of experience in the automotive industry, Sean is a celebrated author and is recognized for his innovative strategies in digital marketing and customer relationship management.   About LA Williams LA Williams, also known as the Blind Master, holds the position of Vice President at Dealer Synergy. He is the co-creator of the Millionaire Car Salesman Podcast and an acclaimed author. Despite being totally blind, LA has achieved significant success by leveraging his unique frameworks to inspire and educate automotive professionals to overcome adversity and maximize their potential.     Harnessing Success: Dissecting Effective Strategies from Automotive Sales Titans Key Takeaways Understanding and leveraging tools and technology is imperative for maximizing success in the automotive sales industry. The mindset of treating automotive sales as your own business can lead to unparalleled growth and innovation. Leadership rooted in authentic practice and constant self-improvement sets the groundwork for dealership excellence.   In the high-octane world of automotive sales, the difference between mediocrity and greatness isn't just about product knowledge or charismatic sales pitches. As illuminated in a vibrant exchange between industry veterans Sean V. Bradley and LA Williams, the path to monumental success encompasses mindset mastery, strategic tool utilization, and transformational leadership. With Sean's no-nonsense approach to self-empowerment and LA's captivating advocacy for greatness, automotive professionals are invited to embrace a revolutionary perspective on sales, management, and personal development.   Mastering Technology in Automotive Sales One of the most pertinent themes discussed is the underutilization of technology and resources within dealerships. Sean V. Bradley emphasizes the necessity for employees to fully engage with their available tools, stating, "You are only as strong as your weakest link." This indicates that even the most advanced technologies, akin to the latest iPhone features, yield little value if only used for basic functions. In dealerships where resources like CRM systems, AI integration, and data mining tools are abundant, the challenge is not in their availability but in their effective utilization. As Sean elaborates using the analogy of a ninja equipped with an arsenal of weapons, the expertise lies not in possessing tools but in mastering them: "Can you imagine if you only were able to use it basic or rudimentary?" The implications of this extend beyond individual success, reflecting on the dealership's profitability and competitive edge. With every employee maximizing their toolset, the collective efficacy of the dealership multiplies.   Adopting an Entrepreneurial Mindset Transitioning from technology to mindset, Sean and LA underscore an entrepreneurial approach to automotive sales, treating it as one's own business. Many salespeople fall into the trap of dependency, leading to complacency and stagnation. Instead, Sean encourages a paradigm shift, "You are building your business within the dealership's business." This self-starter attitude circumvents any limitations posed by the dealership's supply of leads or market fluctuations. By pursuing eight varied strategies for car sales—ranging from walk-ins to referrals and beyond—sales professionals can expand their influence and multiply opportunities. This entrepreneurial mindset not only fuels personal income growth but fosters an environment where innovation thrives, setting apart top performers like Cody Carter, who achieved remarkable earnings by mastering these principles. The broader impact of this theme reveals a market characterized by agile, autonomous professionals poised for optimum success.   Transformative Leadership and Accountability Effective leadership, as addressed by Sean, emerges as the backbone of all transformative practices within a dealership. Critically, he observes a pervasive issue: leaders allowing employees to dictate the pace and quality of operations. "You allow your employees to run your dealership," Sean firmly states, highlighting a common pitfall among dealers. For an organization striving for excellence, leadership rooted in authentic practice and unwavering accountability holds the key. The narrative implores leaders to embody the values and discipline they wish to instill in their teams. "Are you the personification of what you're trying to articulate to your people?" Sean challenges. By doing so, they ensure that processes are adhered to and that strategic goals are not just theoretical ideals but operational realities. This approach to leadership extends beyond immediate organizational benefits, fostering a culture that values integrity, dedication, and continuous improvement. As these qualities permeate through all organizational levels, the dealership elevates its standing and success in the competitive automotive landscape.   In examining the dynamic dialogue and intricate strategies shared by Sean V. Bradley and LA Williams, automotive professionals are invited to transcend conventional practices and embrace transformative methodologies. From mastering cutting-edge technologies to adopting an entrepreneurial spirit, and executing authentic leadership, the road to monumental success is paved with conscious decisions, self-mastery, and community empowerment. This profound discourse draws a blueprint not merely for immediate gain but for enduring excellence and innovation in the automotive sales industry.       Resources + Our Proud Sponsors:   ➼ Podium: The AI Platform Powering the Modern Dealership. Tucker and I get into what's actually happening in the wholesaling and off-market space right now, why states are starting to crack down on how deals get disclosed, and whether that's actually a bad thing for people doing it right. We also break down a real story from someone I know whose partnership went from doing half a million a month to facing multiple lawsuits and a possible bankruptcy, and why it happened. If you've been feeling like this market is a little "off" and you can't quite put your finger on why, this episode should help. We talk about what it actually takes to keep doing good deals in a flat, grinding market, why so many operators are getting over their skis right now, and what I'm personally doing differently with my own projects because of it. As always, you're only one deal away.Connect with Cole Ruud-JohnsonInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/coleruudjohnsonTwitter: https://twitter.com/coleruudjohnsonLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/coleruudjohnsonTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@coleruudjohnson

For years, investors have looked at the bond side of their portfolios and wondered: what's the point?Interest rates were near zero, yields were low, and then 2022 reminded investors that bonds can lose money too.But today, the fixed income landscape looks very different. Retirees can potentially earn 4%, 5%, or even more on investments they traditionally consider their “safe money.”So… is fixed income finally back?In this episode, I break down how I'm thinking about bonds and fixed income for retirees today, including:-Why higher interest rates can create risks for BOTH bonds and stocks-How much of your retirement portfolio should potentially be in fixed income-Risk tolerance vs. your actual capacity to take risk-Using bonds, CDs, T-bills and cash to create a short-term income reserve-Why guaranteed income can change how much investment risk you need to take-Where annuities may fit into the fixed-income conversation-Why chasing dividend stocks for income can create its own risks-How to build an investment portfolio around your retirement plan, not the other way aroundI also share one of my favorite lessons from Tiger Woods' 2019 Masters victory and why sometimes the best retirement strategy isn't firing at every pin. It's simply making sure you stay in the tournament. The goal isn't to maximize the return on every dollar you have. Some dollars need to grow. Some need to hedge against inflation. Some need to produce income. And some simply need to make sure you're still in the game when markets get ugly. Are you interested in working with me 1 on 1? Click this link to fill out our Retirement Readiness QuestionnaireOr,visit my website ⛳ PFR Nation (Who This Is For)If you're over 50, have saved seven figures (or multiple seven figures), love golf and travel, and you want to make work optional while minimizing taxes… welcome to the right place.-KevinConnect with me here:YouTubeFollow the podcastJoin My Company NewsletterThis is for general education purposes only and should not be considered as tax, legal or investment advice.

G.K. Chesterton gave an entire quarter of What's Wrong with the World to what he called the mistake about the child, and his verdict was blunt: the schoolmaster works not for the parent but against him. In this solo back-to-school episode, Joe Grabowski follows that argument through to the line Chesterton offers as the whole purpose of teaching—to pour that fiery simplicity upon the whole of life—and asks what it would take to recover the childlike wonder Chesterton insisted was education's only real aim. What's in This Episode: Why G.K. Chesterton opened What's Wrong with the World with a chapter about medicine, and what a doctor's knowledge of a healthy body has to do with schools The chapter Chesterton titled The Outlawed Parent, where he charges that the schoolmaster works against the parent rather than for him The single sentence Chesterton offers as the only real aim of education, and why it is easy to miss in a book this quotable What Chesterton meant in In Defence of Baby Worship by a new universe inside every child's head, and why it does not make him an idealist The passage in Orthodoxy where Chesterton imagines God saying "do it again" to the sun every morning Resources Mentioned: What's Wrong with the World Orthodoxy The Everlasting Man The Defendant Chesterton Schools Network Chapters: 00:00: Introduction 00:30: Back to school, and what education is actually for 02:29: The medical mistake, and why we stopped asking what is right 04:47: Education, or the mistake about the child 07:42: Parents standing up at school board meetings 09:33: The Chesterton Schools Network 11:59: The only real aim of education 14:18: Keeping familiarity from breeding contempt 19:08: In Defence of Baby Worship, and a new universe in every head 21:31: The delight children take in inventing words 23:48: Man the sign maker, and Walker Percy on language 26:11: The eternal appetite of infancy FOLLOW US Instagram Facebook X SUPPORT Donate Shop Produced by Saint Kolbe Studios

Connecting core data to your marketing and sales platforms can unlock huge opportunities, but only if the foundation is built correctly. In this episode of the Hit Record Podcast, Meredith Olmstead talks with Austin Wentzlaff, CEO and Founder of Nook, about what banks and credit unions should consider before tackling a data integration, from security and scalability to choosing the right data and avoiding costly mistakes.Key Takeaways:1.  Build your data foundation for the long term. An integration that works today may not work as your use cases grow. Plan for how marketing, lending, and sales may eventually use the data.2. Security should be part of the decision from day one.  Financial institutions need to understand where their data lives, how it moves, and how sensitive information is protected.3. Start small and prove the value.  Begin with the data and users you actually need, create some early wins, and expand from there instead of trying to integrate everything at once.

“As the sound of the playgrounds faded, the despair set in.” Join Ian, Liam & Megs for our 346th episode as we head into the bleak, terrifyingly plausible Britain of 2027 for Alfonso Cuarón's Children of Men (2006). Humanity hasn't produced a child in eighteen years, society is collapsing, Britain has become an authoritarian state, and Clive Owen would really just like everyone to leave him alone. Kev isn't with us this week — he attempted to enter the country without the correct paperwork and is currently enjoying the hospitality of the British government's immigration system. And stick around for the Endgame, where we're joined by BFF of the BFE Synthia to help decide whether Children of Men deserves a place among the Best Films Ever. This week we discuss: How many screenwriters does it take to make Children of Men? Five credited writers had a hand in adapting P.D. James' novel. Does the finished film feel like the product of that many voices, or is Cuarón's vision strong enough to make it feel completely unified? Clive Owen as Theo — an excellent actor giving a wonderfully understated performance, but was he a big enough movie star to carry a film this ambitious at the box office? Michael Caine's Jasper becomes our most debated performance of the week — warm, funny and providing some desperately needed humanity... or playing in a completely different film from everybody around him? How much world-building should the audience have to do? Children of Men famously refuses to stop and explain its dystopia, instead burying information in news reports, advertisements, background details and production design. Is that masterful "show, don't tell" filmmaking, or does the movie occasionally expect us to construct too much of its world on its behalf? Ian digs into the screenplay — for a film with an enormous premise, why is the actual story remarkably simple, and does that simplicity allow the themes to become much bigger? Liam explores hope in a hopeless world — when civilisation has effectively accepted its own extinction, what does the existence of one child actually represent? Megs examines Kee's place within the story — is she given enough agency of her own, or does her importance as a symbol sometimes overwhelm her importance as a character? Alfonso Cuarón's direction — those extraordinary long takes aren't simply technical flexes. How does keeping us trapped alongside Theo change the way we experience the violence around him? The car sequence. We discuss how one seemingly impossible shot transforms from casual conversation to absolute nightmare without giving the audience a moment to escape. The politics of Children of Men — refugees, nationalism, terrorism, state violence and fear of outsiders. Nearly twenty years after its release, has the film become even more uncomfortable to watch? The production design — perhaps the film's greatest world-building weapon. From advertisements and graffiti to cages and buses, how much storytelling is happening in the corners of the frame? The ceasefire — one of the most powerful sequences in the entire film. Does that brief moment of silence earn its enormous emotional impact? And finally, with BFF of the BFE Synthia joining us for the Endgame, whether Children of Men is the Best Film Ever — or an extraordinary piece of filmmaking whose technical brilliance sometimes asks the audience to fill in more blanks than we'd like. In her first four years as a salon owner, she experienced three team walkouts while cycling through three ineffective leadership styles: hiring friends over fit ("The Idealist"), leading with rigid control ("The Dictator"), and becoming too hands-off once the business stabilized ("The Semi-Absentee"). Those experiences led her to develop a "leading the leaders" approach, which helped grow the business into an acquisition by a platform company.
