How do we hear God's voice in a world full of noise? What impact do our screens have on our mental health? Carlos Whittaker has made a career out of connecting with people through a device. An author, podcaster, and a leader of a social media community known as the Instafamilia, Carlos has used the power of connection for doing incredible things. And yet, he found himself in a place where the constant connectivity to his phone left him disconnected to what matters most. Carlos decided to embark on an incredible journey in which he would go screen free for 7 weeks and spend time with those who lived without the same incessant attachment as those in the modern world. Carlos lived with and learned from Amish Farmers and Monks and began to see the freedom that was on the other side of disconnecting in order to reconnect. He wrote about his journey in his book called Reconnected: How 7 Screen Free Weeks With Monks and Amish Farmers Helped Me Recover the Lost Art of Being Human. In this episode, Davey and Carlos talk about the impact our screens are having on our mental health, why silence and solitude are so important for our spiritual connection to God, and how to hear God's voice in our pain. If you've noticed that you are more connected than ever and yet are left feeling completely disconnected from the parts of yourself and your relationships that make you human, this episode will invite you to discover how to stay present and connected to the very moments that make up your life. EP 220: In this inspiring episode of Revival Town Podcast, we sit down with Carlos Whittaker, author, speaker, and the connector behind a massive social following he calls the “Instafamilia.” Carlos shares insights from his latest book, Reconnected: How 7 Screen-Free Weeks with Monks and Amish Farmers Helped Me Recover the Lost Art of Being Human. In a world that often feels more disconnected than ever, Carlos talks about the transformative lessons he learned from his screen-free journey, the power of solitude, and how being truly present can enrich our lives. From practical steps to cultivate deeper relationships to surprising takeaways from spending time with Benedictine monks and Amish farmers, this episode is packed with wisdom and actionable advice. Tune in to discover how to reconnect with yourself, others, and the beauty of everyday life.
Carlos Whittaker is an author, podcaster, and global speaker who is backed by, as he puts it, “the power of a massive Instafamilia.” Perhaps it's no wonder, then, that when he decided to spend 23 hours a day in silence at a Benedictine monastery, he experienced physical detoxification symptoms—including heart palpitations. Whittaker and Moore talk about their experiences of spending time screen-free and how it has changed them. They discuss the relational focus made possible by time apart from devices and the transformative effects of communal living. They consider how Christians engage with time, why it's important to savor experiences, and how believers might reclaim the practice of solitude. Ultimately, they speak to the potential for a healthy relationship to technology and discuss what it may look like to pursue it. I am FINALLY home from Rwanda and in Nashville for a minute before going out on TOUR!!! Last week's episode with Emmanuel really laid the groundwork for this episode, so if you haven't listened to that one yet, go back and listen to it first! This week, we are going to go deeper into the story and into the beauty of what the human spirit can accomplish… This week's episode is very specific on FORGIVENESS and RECONCILIATION. Mathias and Steven were the worst of enemies. Mathias actually murdered Steven's entire family in the Rwandan Genocide. You get to hear their story of forgiveness and reconciliation from THEM! Not only do you hear about the forgiveness between these two people who are now as close as brothers, you get to hear about how Mathais forgave himself, which is something we could ALL use a little bit of. Just a warning, this is a heavy episode, and there are talks of violence, so this may not be the episode for our younger Instafamilia. _____ Listen to the first Rwandan episode HERE: https://pod.link/1249486443/episode/200cf7c2a03f3464cc47b68a320706e5 You can find me on Instagram (@loswhit) here: https://bit.ly/CarlosIGNotes Purchase your copy of my new book, How to Human, HERE: https://bit.ly/HowtoHumanNotes Let's keep in touch! This episode of “Faith & Calling” is coming in hot, as in hot topics! They're everywhere these days, splintering even the deepest and longest of relationships. But Paula's guests this week have managed to stay united (even thriving!) in marriage while being divided on politics, parenting and the vaccine. Sounds impossible, right? So what's their big secret? Social media influencer (shout out to the #Instafamilia!), social justice advocate, speaker, and best-selling author Carlos Whittaker and his incredible wife Heather sit down with Paula for a straight-shooting conversation that will leave you encouraged and inspired by what happens when we stop standing on issues and start walking with each other! The Whittakers have been married for 21 years and together share three teenage children. While they've worked in ministry for much of their marriage, they've built much of their solid foundation on the backs of trials, crisis and even personal betrayal, including Carlos' early struggle with porn. After a lot of therapy and inner healing, he uncovered what was at the core of his addiction to artificial intimacy. He shares with Paula a powerful analogy for anyone looking to destroy the roots of a deep-seated habit and embrace true freedom on the other side. On the flip side, that season of dishonesty brought Heather face to face with navigating forgiveness. Despite wanting to throw in the towel on their marriage, she tells Paula about the powerful image God gave her of what was actually going on, which led her to pull back and focus on the bigger problem. Hear what she learned in the process about her own deep-seated habits – and her warning for others who may be wishing for a different kind of life than the one they find themself in. The Whittakers are the real deal and this episode is packed with real joy and wisdom from two imperfect people who know, trust, and rely on God like their life, marriage and parenting depends on it. If you could use some hope, let this conversation with Heather and Carlos - the self-described “hope dealer” - encourage you to let the Spirit move! Carlos Whittaker's wife Heather Whittaker is often asked, “So what does your husband do?” And this question plagued her for a long time until one day she finally identified it perfectly: “He's a hope dealer.” Carlos Whittaker identifies himself as an author, speaker, moment maker, spider killer and hope dealer. He's amassed a following of over 240,000 Instagram followers who he lovingly refers to as his Instafamilia, where they've raised almost a million dollars in under a year for good causes and for bringing humanity back together. Carlos and I talk today about kindness, understanding, walking with your neighbor instead of fighting with them on issues where you disagree, and some of the life lessons he has learned that he believes in and teaches wherever he goes. Buckle up because you're about to be dealt some hope. Time Stamps: [00:59] - Carlos Whittaker tells the story of doing a good deed to show someone they are appreciated. [03:44] - What happens when you ask a bunch of people to help with a good deed? Carlos shares how strangers came together to give more than a $60k tip. [06:21] - Carlos recalls how his blog slowly showed him an opportunity to a new life. [08:29] - How did Carlos test out his speaking skills? [11:00] - When something is placed on your heart, and you follow it, have patience and believe. [12:33] - What are Carlos' thoughts on strong convictions, empathy, and having hard conversations? [14:26] - Don't stand on issues. Walk together. [15:58] - Carlos gives an example of him and a friend walking together to develop more empathy about seemingly opposing standpoints. [17:48] - Listen to Carlos give advice on having hard discussions with loved ones. [19:38] - How does Carlos deal with managing relationships when people have differing opinions? [21:33] - Carlos gives his perspective of “comparative suffering”. Is it actually useful? [23:20] - What's the difference between sympathy and empathy? [25:24] - This moment showed Carlos yet another time that people can come together for good. Only this time, he was the recipient. [28:00] - How did Carlos pay-it-forward? [30:42] - Hope is the currency of humanity. [32:45] - Where does Carlos get his hope? [34:17] - When one solution to your problem is not working, where do you find another solution? [36:45] - Carlos explains the meaning behind the cobwebs and spider analogy. Supporting Resources: Carlos' Instagram @loswhit Carlos' Website

I stopped to have some Chick-fil-A in concourse A of the Atlanta airport and noticed nobody was paying attention to this piano player, so I thought I would sit down and enjoy his music. After listening for a few minutes I invited him over for a chat. I learned that Tonee has kidney disease and is on dialysis 9 hours every night but then comes to the airport to play piano 4 hours a day… I saw his empty tip jar and asked my InstaFamilia to cash app and Venmo a tip for him. 30 minutes later, and after a 20-minute conversation getting to know him, we tipped Tonee $10,000… which has since grown to $55,000 in 12 hours. In today's podcast, I sit down with Tonee and his wife Mickey to surprise them with the news that their $10,000 tip has morphed into $55,000 and their reaction is everything. Tonee shares his life journey on today's episode and it is nothing short of heroic. There is so much to learn from his life. Oh. His wife Mickey TAKES OVER the interview in what is sure to be one of my favorite podcast moments ever... This is what human hope is all about… --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
