Today's guest is Claire Scobie, who's the author of the new book ‘Wild Hope; Stories of Leading and Living In Uncertain Times.' Now anyone who knows me knows that I'm generally a sceptic of hope and many of its connotations, especially in regards to the serious business of chasing political reform or addressing any and all of the many systemic and structural challenges we as a species and this planet faces, but I was convinced to pick Claire's book up as I knew former guest Reece Proudfoot was one of the stories highlighted. Anything involving the serious and grassroots derived work Reece is doing in the Southern Highlands I both wanted to read about but also appreciate how his work fits within a larger story of community activation and development - the place where real change occurs.Claire is an author and journalist and she works with organisations through her business Wordstruck to help them uncover and tell the stories that shape their work and the change they want to make in the world. Her work has been featured in publications like the Observer, the UK's Daily Telegraph and the Sydney Morning Herald, and this book is the result of her own journey of curiosity and discovery since her ecophany involving the unlikely moment she discovered a tiny marsupial found only on the islands of the Torres Strait was thought to have gone extinct, all while sitting on a plane in Hong Kong. Cracked open, Claire's world has been different ever since, and Wild Hope is that story.I found great joy and comfort in Claire's work and this conversation. Over the course of building Finding Nature the last two years I've had the extraordinary opportunity to meet and learn about literally thousands of projects and groups and activations occurring in every corner of our society. These may not be broad-scale in their impact, but they are what we have agency over and deliver essential ingredients for the human spirit - connection, nourishment, self efficacy and progress. In our communities - whether it's a bush regen group, a LGBTIQ poetry slam series, attending something like a writers or film festival - it is in these arenas we meet like-minded and like-hearted people. It's here we can feel safe and part of something bigger than ourselves, and where action becomes possible. Wild Hope tells this story and the stories of dozens of these types of communities from around the world. In this conversation Claire shares about this, her own journey of transformation and how through local connection, immersing in nature and learning about First Nations cultures and practices, she has learnt to walk a path filled with mystery, joy and love. Some extra reading relevant to this episode from our friends at Altiorem. My guest today is a woman who is credited with putting poetry back on the map, Donna Ashworth…. Donna came to prominence in 2020, when a poem she wrote about lockdown was read in a viral video to raise money for the NHS. She subsequently self-published her first volume of poetry, To The Women, which sold over 100,000 copies. Unsurprisingly the publishing industry came a-calling. Now The UK's best selling poet, Donna has written eight books, including the bestsellers Wild Hope and I Wish I Knew and you'll find them on the bedside tables of millions of women. Her latest, Growing Brave, a collection of words to soothe fear and let more life in, feels once again, perfectly pitched for the times we're living through. Donna joined me for what is probably the most emotionally intelligent conversation I've ever had here on The Shift. We talked about being dubbed “the difficult one” and how we grow into the labels we're given, how to win the self-worth battle, the secret to being well-boundaried, why she doesn't care for a “man-made” timeline and finding her calling in midlife. Also, I should warn you that Donna is incredibly generous and candid when it comes to talking about her experience of anorexia and how it feels to age with an eating disorder. * You can buy all the books mentioned in this podcast at The Shift bookshop on Bookshop.org, including Growing Brave by Donna Ashworth and the book that inspired this podcast, The Shift: how I lost and found myself after 40 - and you can too, by me. * If you enjoyed this episode and you fancy buying me a coffee, pop over to my page on buymeacoffee.com. • And if you'd like to support the work that goes into making this podcast and get a weekly newsletter plus loads more content including exclusive transcripts of the podcast, why not join The Shift community, come and have a look around at www.theshiftwithsambaker.substack.com • The Shift (on life after 40) with Sam Baker is created and hosted by Sam Baker and edited by Juliette Nicholls @ Pineapple Audio Production. Hello to you listening in New Hampshire, New Jersey, and Washington!Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Thoughts on Thursday and your host, The Witch of Whidbey.Maybe like me you were discouraged from displaying your womanly witchy powers, dismissed for dabbling in sparks of magic that would heal the world, disowned for seeing beyond everyday reality to the visionary knowledge born of imagination, curiosity, and self-expression.But, it's never too late to remind yourself of the woman you are and the witch wound you are ready to heal.THE WITCH WOUND“They call it the witch wound. We were punished you see, broken, slain, for shining too brightly. So we learned to hide that spark. We learned to play it down, play dumb, play dead. And we were taught to fear the light within us, lest it herald our downfallBut not anymore. You are not a wicked witch my friend, you are quite simply, or complicatedly, a woman. And your magic is not something you can choose, or lose.It always is, and always has lived within you.And you need no longer hide it.I call it the witch wound, but the time to heal is here.Now.Let that magic out.” [~Donna Ashworth - Witch Wound, from ‘Wild Hope' - UK: https://amzn.eu/d/2j0Nquu - US: https://a.co/d/h6FEaTv]You're always invited: “Come for the stories - stay for the magic!” Speaking of magic, would you subscribe and spread the word with a generous 5-star review and comment - it helps us all - and join us next time!Meanwhile, stop by my Quarter Moon Story Arts website to:✓ Check out Services I Offer,✓ For a no-obligation conversation about your communication challenges, get in touch with me today✓ Stay current with me as “Wyzga on Words” on Substack and on LinkedInStories From Women Who Walk Production TeamPodcaster: Diane F Wyzga & Quarter Moon Story ArtsMusic: Mer's Waltz from Crossing the Waters by Steve Schuch & Night Heron MusicAll content and image © 2019 to Present Quarter Moon Story Arts. Tune in to learn how local actions are making a global impact and why storytelling is an essential tool in the fight for a healthier planet. Hello to you listening in Middletown, New Jersey!Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is the Witch of Whidbey with 60 Seconds for Time Out Tuesday this All Hallow's Eve.Maybe like me you were discouraged from displaying your womanly witchy powers, dabbling in sparks of magic that would heal the world, seeing beyond the everyday reality to the knowledge of imagination.Maybe a witch saw you for who you really are, took you by the hand and said “Now! The time is now to choose your magic.”Maybe it's as simple as receiving a poem from Donna Ashworth to remind yourself of the woman you are:THE WITCH WOUND“They call it the witch wound. And your magic is not something you can choose, or lose.It always is, and always has lived within you.And you need no longer hide it.I call it the witch wound, but the time to heal is here.Now.Let that magic out.” [~Donna Ashworth]WORDS: Witch Wound, from ‘Wild Hope' UK: https://amzn.eu/d/2j0Nquu US: https://a.co/d/h6FEaTvYou're always invited: “Come for the stories - stay for the magic!” Speaking of magic, would you subscribe, share a 5-star rating + nice review on your social media or podcast channel of choice, and join us next time!Meanwhile, stop by my Quarter Moon Story Arts website to:✓ Check out What I Offer,✓ Arrange your free Story Start-up Session,✓ Opt In to my monthly NewsAudioLetter for bonus gift, valuable tips & techniques to enhance your story work, and✓ Stay current with Diane on LinkedIn.Stories From Women Who Walk Production TeamPodcaster: Diane F Wyzga & Quarter Moon Story ArtsMusic: Mer's Waltz from Crossing the Waters by Steve Schuch & Night Heron MusicAll content and image © 2019 to Present Quarter Moon Story Arts. Donna Ashworth is VERY famous right now, current Sunday Times number one best seller with her (genuinely) beautiful book, Wild Hope. She is especially highly regarded in the widow community for how accurately and poignant she writes about loss. Yet she's not widowed herself, I was fascinated to know how she knew what we felt. I was so fortunate enough to persuade (stalk) her to come and talk about what the inspiration is behind those powerful words. We cover as many topics as you might imagine ( genuine lols at us getting ready to sign off three times , then finding something else VITAL to discuss) I genuinely felt like we sat side by side and met kindred and much admired spirit. Thank you Donna for bearing your precious soul and loving a deep and true conversation as much as me. As Donna says 'you can't feel ugly when you're smiling', and I hope you enjoy listening as much as I enjoyed talking to a woman who's felt like a friend for a long time and is certainly one now. She also calls me inspirational, just saying.) Trigger warnings- eating disorders. An army investigation has found that 19-year-old soldier Jaysley Beck is believed to have taken her own life after a period of relentless sexual harassment from one of her bosses. The gunner was serving in the Royal Artillery, and was found dead at the Larkhill army camp in Wiltshire in December 2021. Her mother, Leighann McCready, joins Emma along with Emma Norton, director and solicitor for the Centre for Military Justice. Poet Donna Ashworth has released a new collection of her work, Wild Hope. It is a selection of poems and passages that she hopes will help people to find hope in an increasingly pressurised world. She joins Emma to talk about why she picked up poetry in her 40s, and how it has changed her life. Savanah Leaf is a Team GB volleyball player turned film director, whose feature film Earth Mama is playing at the London Film Festival this week. Having competed in the 2012 Olympics, Savanah turned to filmmaking as a hobby when recovering from an injury. She joins Emma to discuss the transferable skills between sports and directing and tackling the US foster care system in her directorial debut. Lakaydia Reynolds was walking through a park in south London on her way to a driving lesson when she was attacked by three dogs. The dog's owner tried to intervene, but the dogs injured her arm, legs and face. A stranger saw the attack and filmed it happening, rather than moving to intervene. The footage was uploaded to social media, where it has been viewed tens of thousands of times. Emma talks to Lakaydia about what she experienced. Author Susan Wider discusses genre-bending artist Charlotte Salomon's work and how it survived the Shoah to capture a life and time. It's My Whole Life: Charlotte Salomon: An Artist in Hiding during World War II, winner of the 2022 National Jewish Book Award for Young Adult Literature Susan Wider is the author of It's My Whole Life: Charlotte Salomon: An Artist in Hiding during World War II, winner of the 2022 National Jewish Book Award for Young Adult Literature. It's My Whole Life is the first biography for teen and young adult readers about the art and life of German-Jewish artist and modernist painter Charlotte Salomon (1917 Berlin—Auschwitz 1943). The book is also finding a strong audience among adult readers of art and biography. Charlotte Salomon is remembered for her painted memoir, Life? or Theater? where she combined her 33,000-word manuscript, nearly 800 paintings, and a musical soundtrack, all hinting at a film storyboard or graphic novel-style presentation. It is thought to be the largest single work of art created by a Jew during the Holocaust, and she produced it while confronting racism, genocide, psychological abuse, family suicides, and the strife of loving an older man. What she wanted most was to make a name for herself as an artist. Susan Wider's articles, essays, and art reviews have been included in Orion, THE magazine, The Fourth River, and Wild Hope magazine among others. Before becoming a full-time author, she held senior management positions at the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum, The Santa Fe Institute, and Lovelace Respiratory Research Institute. Earlier in her career she taught English for the French Chamber of Commerce in Normandy, France and worked as a violinist in professional chamber and symphony orchestras. Susan lives outside Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA, where she shares the land with an assortment of hawks, snakes, woodpeckers, bobcats, coyotes, and a husband.
How should we respond to – or better yet, cope with the extreme climate weirding and environmental collapse we keep seeing and reading about everywhere? In lieu of an immobilizing depression we must look to what is ALSO happening out there - the conservation and environmental justice success stories. Movements and advocacy that we frankly try to cover on this show every week, although we plead guilty to sharing some of the gloom and doom. But what about the communities banding together to heal the land and their relationship with it? Restoring ecosystems that benefit people in their neighborhoods, wildlife in their habitats, as well as energize government and private industry – maybe actually working together for a change. Some have even argued that storytelling is a sort of climate action. We spoke with Jared Lipworth, Executive Producer of a new documentary series called Wild Hope [https://www.wildhope.tv/] available on the web and on PBS, based on Andrew Balmford's book of the same name. It endeavors to tell the stories of ordinary people leading a collaborative environmental recovery in the face of extinctions, superstorms, and climate tipping points.
