POPULARITY
In this re-released episode first published on 4th April 2022, we explore the relationship between podcasting and power, both how podcasting has replicated and interacted with existing power systems, and how it offers a radical space for marginalised voices to create freely without gatekeepers. We think about how The Podcast Industry has developed into just another industry/workplace incorporating the issues inherent in those industries and workplaces. We look at the history and present of podcasting and ask you to consider adding your voice to its future. A couple years ago, executive producer Adizah Eghan noticed an interesting trend on social media: everyone seemed to be living it up in Tulum, Mexico. Some were flocking there to have a good time, while others were seeking something much deeper; they wanted to escape racism and seek refuge with like-minded people. Adizah traveled to Mexico to experience the vibes of Tulum for herself — and also dig into why Black people are seeking refuge in a small fishing town south of Cancún.This story was produced by Adizah Eghan, with editorial support from Kate Osborn, James T. Green, Annie Avilés and Stephanie Kariuki. VICE News Reports is produced by Sam Eagan, Sophie Kazis, Adreanna Rodriguez, Adriana Tapia and Sheena Ozaki. When you limit language, you limit thinking. When you limit thinking, you limit creativity. When you limit creativity, audio storytellers wind up making the same thing over and over and over again and that's not good. That's why producer James T. Green says we need new language to describe our work. And we can start by borrowing from art and architecture.

In the fourth and final MINI-Series episode, we learn from sound designer, artist, and brilliant documentarian James T. Green about their philosophy and practice around sound design and creation. James is the founder of the studio Molten Heart, and their work has been heard in 99% Invisible with Roman Mars, The Met, Pop Up Magazine, and more.By unpacking and dissecting small pieces of sound and music from James, we learn the thoughtful, intentional art of sound design and the power that small amounts of sound effects - or silence - can hold. Sound can make us feel, reflect, pause, or act, and often we don't even notice this subtle art, despite its importance in providing scaffolding or key moments in building a story, a scene, or an emotion. In this episode, we make what is so often invisible in the construction of an audio story, visible.SHARE THE SHOW:Help others find Unthinkable in their favorite podcast player by sharing this link: jayacunzo.com/unthinkable-podcast***MORE FROM JAY:Playing Favorites newsletter: stories and frameworks for creating work that resonates.Coaching and consulting: Hire Jay to work with you 1:1 on the most important elements of your brand or projects.Or, hire Jay to develop and/or host a show for your brand: jayacunzo.com/shows***MORE FROM THIS EPISODE:James T. For many of us, the church is a place of refuge. It's where we first experience community and an understanding of love. But real talk: what do you do as a non binary person if the place that made you, doesn't exactly accept who you are? That's the dilemma from our very own editor James T. Green, who explores their identity and faith with renowned writer and poet, Nikki Giovanni. In this conversation, Nikki shares some of her most intimate truths with James, including her own challenges with the institution of the Black church.
