Most importantly: Here's my Bookshop.org list for Frank Bill, where you can pre-order BACK TO THE DIRT, and pick up all of Frank's other books, too. BTTD drop 5/9!I first met Frank Bill in his home town of Corydon Indiana, on September 10th, 2011. It was the book release party for his first book, CRIMES IN SOUTHERN INDIANA. It's also where I first met Donald Ray Pollock, Matthew McBride, Scott Phillips, Jedidiah Ayres, Kyle Minor, and (in person) David James Keaton. It's also where I first met Waffle House. It was a significant trip for me.Since that time, I've done reviews for all of Frank's books, and interviewed him several times. I have a long history with this author, and I really enjoy his writing. So, when I got wind of his new book releasing, I was so excited that I had a podcast to invite him on to! What follows is a little over an hour of discussion about war, mental illness, drugs, and other things that can erode and destroy a person. You may think that, because Frank is a crime author, we dig into the dirty grittiness of life. Honestly it's more about the devastating effect all of these things can have on people, families, communities, and a national identity. We talk about how it's important to honor family and history, and to make an effort to understand people - especially people who come from different backgrounds. It was a great conversation that I hope you enjoy. For anyone viewing the YouTube video: There was an issue with the video file on Frank's side, so about halfway in to the recording, his feed goes to a still photo. The audio is fine, thankfully. We just lost some of the video. Apologies for making you look at my face more.YouTube video: Get full access to The ARC Party at www.thearcparty.com/subscribe

Noirvember 2021 continues with a look at John Boorman's POINT BLANK.  Released in 1967, the film was based on the 1962 novel by Donald Westlake writing as Richard Stark.  The film stars Lee Marvin as Walker, a man who was betrayed by his wife and his best friend.  Now he's back, seemingly from the dead, and goes on a quest to kill his friend and get back the money he feels he's owed.  Jedidiah Ayres and Andrew Nette join Mike to discuss The Hunter, Point Blank, and the many cuts of Brian Helgeland's Payback.

Nobody makes a creative, ultra-specific crime subgenre Letterboxd list quite like my good friend, Peckerwood and Fierce Bitches author Jedidiah Ayres. Inspired by his inventive and comprehensive "Just Dew It" list of Extreme Sports Crime Films (and their close relatives), we selected four titles to watch and discuss which were made and released during our childhood and teen years. Although we reference several movies throughout, in this episode, we focus on BMX Bandits, Point Break (1991, of course), Cliffhanger, and Drop Zone.In sharing stories about our relationships to the films as well as what we think makes them so special (or at least intriguing!), Hardboiled Wonderland blogger Jed Ayres relays the single greatest "how I first saw ___" story I've heard on this podcast so far. It has everything - subterfuge, daring, ingenuity - and it's honestly, very incredible and very Jed. So buckle up, make sure your parachute works, and try to avoid any flamethrowers or kids on bike as you listen to this fun installment of Watch With Jen.Note: Recorded in mid-August, I referenced my vaccinated dad's recent Covid diagnosis. I'm pleased to report that he is well today, thanks to that vaccine!Theme Music: Solo Acoustic Guitar by Jason Shaw, Free Music ArchiveOriginally Posted on Patreon here (9/5/21): https://www.patreon.com/posts/55798166
