Lee is joined by friends and returning guest hosts Robby and Wick to cover John Flynn's "The Outfit" (1973), starring Robert Duvall, Karen Black, and the recently departed Joe Don Baker. Being one of several adaptations of a book in the popular "Parker" series of crime novels, the hosts ponder the virtues of Donald Westlake's more matter-of-fact blue collar criminal world, and the hard-nosed professionals he populated it with. The hosts also discuss recent watches, which mostly focuses on 30+ year old television this time around. "The Outfit" IMDB Check out Wick's fantastic art here. The film writers Brian Abrams and Will Sloan return to the podcast for a salute to one of our favourite screen presences, the great American character actor Joe Don Baker, who passed away this month at the age of 89. We discuss the full arc of Joe Don's career, thrust into leading man status in the early seventies playing Tennessee Sheriff Buford Pusser who waged war against the Dixie Mob in 1973's populist smash hit Walking Tall, and the less financially successful followup with the same director (Phil Karlson), the brutal, sweaty noir thriller Framed, to the role that (like it or not) defined him for so many in the culture as a scuzzy cop in 1975's Mitchell (immortalized on one of the funniest episodes of Mystery Science Theater 3000) to his comeback in the eighties in the masterful BBC miniseries Edge of Darkness (where he received the most acclaim he ever got as an actor), his several appearances in the Bond series (where he played both a good guy and a bad guy), and his notable supporting role in Scorsese's remake of Cape Fear. The League returns to complete (and contrast!) the Cape Fear Do-Over as we tackle Martin Scorcese's 1991 version, starring Robert DeNiro, Juliette Lewis and Nick Notle's angry voice. Sadly, after we recorded this episode, we learned that Joe Don Baker passed away. We take a couple of shots at him in this one, but it was all in good fun. he was an amazing actor and a treasure that will be missed.

In this gripping episode, Stuart and Jacob tackle the intense world of "Cape Fear," comparing the original 1962 film directed by J. Lee Thompson with Martin Scorsese's 1991 remake. They dig deep into the chilling narratives of revenge and obsession, exploring the contrasting portrayals of Max Cady by Robert Mitchum and Robert De Niro. What makes De Niro's performance so unpredictable, like a more deranged Daffy Duck? How do the character arcs of Sam Bowden differ between the two films given their respective actors? And how can the 1991 version push the boundaries of horror and suspense in ways that the original could only hint at?Also featured in this episode are diatribes about "Civilization 7", the correct amount of references to "The Simpsons", a love for Joe Don Baker, and a game that Jacob slapped together in an afternoon and forces Stuart to play. You think you can take me? Well go ahead on and watch this stinker from Greydon Clark. "Final Justice" (1984) is a film that occupies a peculiar space in the action genre, and how much you'll enjoy it hinges heavily on your tolerance for low-budget absurdity. At the center of this bizarre movie is Joe Don Baker's portrayal of Thomas Jefferson Geronimo, a tough-as-nails Texas cop who, unfortunately, ends up being more laughable than intimidating. Baker's Geronimo feels like a caricature of every 1980s action hero, but without the charisma or the compelling edge needed to pull it off. Instead, we're left with a character that stumbles through the movie with more groans than grins. The action sequences, intended to be thrilling, often border on the ridiculous, with character decisions that are so baffling they verge on parody. Whether it's Geronimo's relentless pursuit of criminals across Europe or the frequent and illogical shootouts, the film constantly challenges the suspension of disbelief. And yet, these moments might be where some viewers find their entertainment—if you're into movies that are so bad they're good, this could be your thing. Unfortunately, much of the film is bogged down by long stretches of tedium, where plot elements are repeated to the point of exhaustion. What might have been intended as humorous instead feels like a never-ending loop of dullness. The narrative itself is a mess, a baffling mix of cop clichés and bizarre plot twists that don't seem to lead anywhere meaningful. In the end, "Final Justice" is a movie that might appeal to a niche audience who enjoys dissecting and mocking bad cinema. But for most, it's likely to be an exercise in patience. If you have a taste for the absurdly bad and can appreciate it for its sheer ridiculousness, there might be something here for you. Otherwise, you may find yourself wishing for a more competent action flick.
On this week's episode of Unclear and Present Danger, Jamelle and John watched Shadow Conspiracy, the 1997 political thriller directed by George P. Cosmatos and starring Charlie Sheen, Linda Hamilton, Donald Sutherland and Sam Waterston. In Shadow Conspiracy, a young White House aide uncovers a plot to assassinate the president, making him a target of the conspirators. What follows is a race to evade the assassin, expose those responsible, and save constitutional government from a shadowy group of deep state operators. If this sounds generic, that's because it is! The movie feels like it was written by ChatGPT. Despite the total absence of anything original, Jamelle and John do find much to discuss in the film, including the ways in which it is rooted in the anti-political ethos of the 1990s.The tagline for Shadow Conspiracy was “Life, liberty and the pursuit of absolute power.”You can find Shadow Conspiracy available to rent or buy on Amazon or Apple TV+. This week certainly has the latest and the greatest in Blu-rays. Depending on who you ask of course. If you inquire with Erik Childress and Peter Sobczynski you will certainly here about one of the greatest westerns of all-time (Erik's favorite) as well as a film that deserves to be among the very best of Sidney Lumet's career. Michael Powell directs a creepy film about voyeurism and murder and the pair look again at the film where Brandon Lee lost his life. Shout Factory has a trio of horror oddities and there is also lament for the goofy sex comedies of the ‘80s. It's Die Hard in a Bond reboot! In this episode, Phil, Liam, and guest Ben Rufus Green discuss the 1995 James Bond blockbuster GoldenEye and its many connections to the Die Hard franchise. They explore the premise of the film, its self-reflexivity, and the surprisingly high amount of ‘Die Hard DNA' present in the movie, which goes way beyond the historical connection between the newly-minted 007 Pierce Brosnan and original Die Hard director John McTiernan. After the dissolution of the Soviet Union, MI6 agent James Bond (Pierce Brosnan) uncovers a sinister plot led by rogue Russian operatives to use a Soviet-era orbital space weapon codenamed ‘Goldeneye' to launch an attack on London. In the process, Bond teams up with Natalya Simonova (Izabella Scorupco), a Russian satellite expert, in a globe-trotting race against time to prevent the strike. The boys discuss the continuity and multiverse aspect of the Bond franchise, share their favorite Bond films, and rate their favorite Bond actors, while also discussing the very particular qualities required to play this iconic role. They also go deep on the films' excellent villains, with particular attention paid to Alec Trevelyan (Sean Bean) and Xenia Onatopp (Famke Janssen), as well as its leading lady Izabella Scorupco, and the sturdy supporting cast that includes the likes of Robbie Coltrane, Joe Don Baker, Michael Kitchen, Gottfried John, Alan Cumming and Dame Judi Dench as M. As this is a Bond movie, fortunately the boys are already wearing their tuxedos, allowing them seamless entry into the ‘Die Hard Oscars', where awards are dispensed for ‘Exceptional Thief', ‘Dick of the Movie', and ‘Best Death. As always the conversation concludes with a Bond-centric edition of the ‘Double Jeopardy' trivia quiz! We get a lot of whacky customers in Apocalypse Video. Everyone from ptera people to lizard people come into our store not understanding what a movie is, to which we are forced to educate them on the lost art form that was once Cinema. But every once in a while we encounter a customer that is simply unable to distinguish the line between reality and fiction. A person so convinced that what they are watching is real that they are willing to put their own life and the lives of others at risk. Such a person entered the store recently. And the object of their obsession…? The 1995 hit sci-fi adventure film Congo – or, as this person stubbornly believes, the 1995 documentary film Congo. Well, let's just say that someone who enters the store wielding a giant laser isn't someone we want to disappoint. If Congo is what she wants, Congo is what she'll get. I'm your host and leader of this expedition, Dave, and joining me as we venture deep into the jungle of Michael Crichton's imagination (even though apparently he had almost nothing to do with the making of this movie) are fellow cinephiles and TraviCom cronies, Mike, Ryan, Cody, and special guest Herkemina Homolka. Topics of discussion in this episode include Tim Curry eating as much scenery as humanly possible; Joe Don Baker teaches us that nothing is more important than family (unless there's a big ass diamond involved); and finally, we can't help but feel a little bad as Laura Linney mercilessly lasers the film's primate villains to death. Be sure to rate, review and subscribe wherever you get your podcasts. You can also Follow Us on Twitter, Like Us on Facebook, or shoot us an email at apocalypsevideopod@gmail.com. Got a movie you'd like us to watch? Hit us up and we'll talk about it on the show! And so concludes our expedition into the Congo. We'll be back next week with an all new Bond Cast! Until then…put down my sesame cake!!!

On this week's episode Phillip is joined once again by Robert Papp from The Cinemigos Podcast and the Circle of Jerks Podcast on YouTube, and they discuss 1975's Framed starring Joe Don Baker and directed by Phil Karlson. The two start the show by talking about some different movies and Rob's different podcasts. They read the general information about the movie while throwing in some different facts to go with it. It's then time for Listener Opinions from Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook about the movie. Then it's time to discuss the movie, and what a fun movie it is. They answer the regular question; Did they notice anything the Tarantino might have liked or put into a movie? Phillip and Rob then individually rate the movie. Then they answer another question; Would they buy, rent, or find this movie for free? Phillip then gives his Phil's Film Favorite of the Week; Charade (1963). Rob then talks about some Hitchcock films that he has been watching; Rope (1948) and North by Northwest (1959). The writer Brian Abrams, author of the new book "You Talkin' to Me?”: The Definitive Guide to Iconic Movie Quotes, joins me from New York City to discuss Sam Peckinpah and his underrated 1972 rodeo drama Junior Bonner starring Steve McQueen and Joe Don Baker. Right after Peckinpah wrapped on his controversial Straw Dogs in England, he jumped into production on Junior Bonner, a small-stakes character study about an aging rodeo rider (McQueen) who returns to his hometown of Prescott, Arizona to compete for one more victory and to reconnect with his family, including his oafish brother, local real estate developer Curly (Baker) and his estranged parents (Robert Preston and Ida Lupino). It's also the story of the landscape of the American West giving way to the suburban sprawl and exploitation of the modern world, literally being bulldozed all around the Bonner family. As Junior's rodeo star father Ace asks: “If this world's all about winners, what's for the losers?” Dismissed in its day, and somewhat of an outlier in Peckinpah's run of action films in the 1970s, time has been kind to Junior Bonner, which can be appreciated now as a Hangout Movie, three days in the life of an aging rodeo star and a fading way of life, vividly brought to life by Peckinpah and his cast. Plus we discuss Brian's new book, which looks into the origins of hundreds of classic movie lines across American film history, how some lines have entered the lexicon and live on in the culture, and the movie quotes we each have rolling around in our heads. For this week's episode, Jamelle and John were joined by Isaac Chotiner of the New Yorker magazine to watch and discuss 1995's GoldenEye, the first James Bond film of the 1990s and the first James Bond film of the post-Cold War era. GoldenEye is the seventeenth film in the James Bond series and the first to star Pierce Brosnan, who would go on to star in three subsequent pictures, all of which we will eventually cover on the podcast: Tomorrow Never Dies, The World is Not Enough and Die Another Day.Directed by Martin Campbell and starring, in addition to Brosnan, Sean Bean, Izabella Scorupco, Famke Janssen, Alan Cumming, Judi Dench and Joe Don Baker, Goldeneye was something of a reboot for the Bond franchise, which had been on a six-year hiatus since the previous entry, License to Kill starring Timothy Dalton. The plot of GoldenEye is as straightforward as one of these movies can manage: Bond is tasked with stopping the mysterious Janus syndicate from stealing and using a Soviet-era space weapon capable of causing an electro-magnetic pulse blast anywhere on the planet. Complicating this mission is the fact that the leader of Janus, Alec Trevelayn, is a former MI6 agent who was supposed to have died on a mission with Bond, nine years earlier. There's the usual adventures and explosions and casual sexual encounters, culminating in a final showdown between Bond and Trevelayn on a massive satellite.GoldenEye, if you've somehow never seen it, is available for rental and purchase on iTunes and Amazon. For our next episode, we're covering the 1995 romantic-political comedy, “The American President,” starring Michael Douglas and Annette Benning.Connor Lynch produced this episode. As Overlapping Dialogue continues its quest through the cinema of the 1990s, we pair our most unlikely duo yet with the "edgy" coming-of-age drama Kids and the wildly popular entry in the James Bond franchise GoldenEye, both from 1995. But before we careen between the two widely disparate works, this edition's Blue Plate Special sees us tackling the reshuffling of Turner Classic Movies and pontificating on what it might mean for the future of the beloved institution; sorting through three recent releases in Asteroid City, No Hard Feelings, and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny; and celebrating the life and legacy of screen legend Alan Arkin. We eventually get around to trying to classify what exactly Kids is all about and marvel at how GoldenEye successfully retooled 007 for a new generation. We're getting silly on a brand new episode of George Kennedy is my Copilot with Greydon Clark's Airplane-inspired horror spoof WACKO from 1982 featuring Joe Don Baker, Stella Stevens, Julia Duffy, Andrew "not yet Dice" Clay and - of course - George Kennedy as the kinda creepy Mr. Doctor Graves! It's full of sight gags, puns, Hitchcock references and not a heck of a lot else. We also fit in a discussion on the Clint Black video for "Summer's Comin'" which features a lovely George Kennedy cameo (amongst a slew of other celebs). CHECK IT OUT! Totally awesome video games! That's what Joysticks promises. Eugene, McDorfus and King Vidiot are running interference while we chew up the scenery of this 1983 T&A buffet. This movie has everything you do AND don't want you in your early 80s celluloid war chest. Scott McGinnis and Corrine Bohrer round out the casting staples of any great, but forgettable 80s flick. Joe Don Baker must have been blackmailed to be in this movie. Come to think of it, he was blackmailed IN this movie as well. Art imitating life...imitating art? Who knows. I'm as lost as that senile wizard wandering around the Gauntlet landscape with this summary anyway. PAC-MAN, Galaga, Defender, Asteroids, Zaxxon, Tempest, Two Tigers, Dragon's Lair, Pole Position, Track & Field, Star Castle, Centipede, Dig Dug, Tron, Missile Command, Donkey Kong, Robotron, Frogger, Burger Time, Rampage, 1942, Berzerk, Q*Bert, Joust, Rolling Thunder, Contra, Double Dragon.....that's enough characters for a great summary, right?
In the final installment of And Now for Something Completely Similar, the guys talk about one of Jason's childhood favourites - Goldeneye. Does it hold up?! Returning guests Kurt Schiller and Chris Woodward join us to discuss James Bond's first foray into a post-Cold War world, 'GoldenEye' featuring two notable "firsts": Pierce Brosnan's debut as the international super spy and the first Bond film helmed by director Martin Campbell (who would return to update Bond again for a post-9/11 audience with 'Casino Royale').We discuss the troubled history of the series' 17th entry that saw the exit of previous two-time Bond Timothy Dalton, how Pierce Brosnan's take on the iconic character appeals to the 90s fetishization of the business class, and why the film's embrace of a post-Soviet setting- refreshingly- doesn't feel quite like a victory lap.Follow Kurt Schiller on Twitter. Bobby, Chef Robby, and Sir Charles discuss a Joe Don Baker, Robert Loggia 70's car movie where neither men have decided to care... or even read the script. The agressive apathy provides mind blowing moments onscreen and a great movie for the Grindbin.
LISTEN UP, MULLETHEADS! On this episode of GEORGE KENNEDY IS MY COPILOT we're finally covering the film that nabbed George Kennedy his Oscar: it's 1967's COOL HAND LUKE! Featuring a slew of recognizable faces (Strother Martin! Dennis Hopper! Harry Dean Stanton! Joe Don Baker!), an unforgettable lead performance from Paul Newman and a great Lalo Schifrin score, it's a key anti-hero film of the late 60s that helped launch the New Hollywood movement. But this episode is mostly about doing the most outrageous George Kennedy impressions possible. We also listen to George's Oscar speech, so you know you're in for a good time. LISTEN!
Mars Attacks! is based upon a series of Topps trading cards released in the early 1960s. And it certainly pays homage to its inspiration. Unfortunately, its also a narrative mess that fails to get the most out of its stacked cast. Mars Attacks! features an all-star lineup. It's got Jack Nicholson in two roles, Jim Brown, Joe Don Baker, Annette Bening, Glenn Close, Michael J. Fox, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Pierce Brosnan, just to name a few. And, yes, their presence is felt, but outside of Nicholson, who's terrific as a Las Vegas Huckster and the President, they all have nothing to do. That is the great failing of Mars Attacks! It wants to do a lot without really doing anything at all. It's all just empty spectacle—little green CGI men conquering a hapless earth. Hence why it received middling to negative reviews—56% on Rotten Tomatoes with 86 of them—and was beheaded like an annoying chihuahua at the box office. On a budget of $100 million, Mars Attacks! raked in just north of $101 million worldwide. The losses on that are enough to make a financier's head explode like a martian listening to Slim Whitman. Now, sit back, disintegrate a Double County Double IPA from Dry County Brewing, and do not trust the martians! I, the Thunderous Wizard (@WriterTLK), Chumpzilla, Capt. Cash, and Bling Blake are optimistic about still having two out of the three branches of government. That ain't bad! This Week's Segments: Introduction/Plot Breakdown – Nice planet. We'll take it! It has been argued that there is no such thing as a “perfect” film. On this week's episode of Not A Bomb, we put that theory to the test as Troy and Brad discuss 1995's talking gorilla film - Congo. The guys cannot tackle such a film as Congo without help, so they welcome Charlie back to the show but also The Twisted Kid Matt - host of The Mix Tape Podcast makes his Not A Bomb debut. The podcast quickly devolves into juvenile human/gorilla relationship jokes, turning Dylan Walsh into a human punching bag, and praising what should have been Delroy Lindo's Academy Award Winning performance. *** Just a warning, this episode is NSFW so DO NOT listen in your car with your kids! Seriously! You might have to explain some very politically incorrect jokes. Grunge up your unwashed hair and please put out that endless chain of cigarettes as we succumb to the 90s slacker vortex that is Reality Bites. Do Winona Ryder and Ethan Hawke's characters actually deserve each other because they both suck so much? And should we feel bad for Ben Stiller or relieved that he totally dodged a bullet there? Could we just watch Steve Zahn be adorable and Janeane Garofalo in her perfect vintage outfits instead? And can we directly blame all the shitty behavior and toxic relationships during our 20s on this movie? We'll let you know as soon as we stop listening to Lisa Loeb on loop.Read Randall's full episode notes at yourenofun.com.And follow us on Instagram , Facebook and Twitter.
