Marietta Miles asked Authors on the Air host Pam Stack to contribute something to a piece she was writing in DO SOME DAMAGE about the women who influenced me in my life. This article was for Women's HerStory Month. I've had a lot of brilliant women in my life who have left behind little amazing pieces of themselves that I hope I carry with me today in their honor. Back to Marietta. Instead of writing something, I asked her to get some of her friends together and guest host Authors on the Air to showcase who inspired them. It is with great pleasure that this bodacious line-up of brave women: Marietta will introduce you to these beautiful, brilliant and bodacious women: Ann Abel aka Allison Davis Dharma Kelleher Holly West Mia Manansala (with her look alike Wonder Woman) Sarah Chen Cindy Rosmus (She's editor for Yellow Mama Magazine and shy so a pic of the mag.) Episode 12 of the "7 Minutes With" podcast, brought to you by DoSomeDamage.com, with your host Steve Weddle. As always, Jedidiah Ayres talks about film, while Chris F. Holm suggests some music, and Holly West discusses TV. This week, we're talking about the top ten songs of the week, the movie WIDOWS, and the BBC show Bodyguar West: hollywest.com/ Holm: chrisfholm.com/ Ayres: spaceythompson.blogspot.com/ Chris Holm: In which a forty-something music geek a thousand miles outside his comfort zone evaluates the week’s most popular songs. 10: Lil Baby & Gunna “Drip Too Hard” If you’d told me the tenth most popular song in America was Lil Baby and Gunna’s “Drip Too Hard,” I would have assumed you made every part of that up. There’s not much song in this song—ostentatious autotune’s still a thing we’re doing, huh?—but what little’s there is catchy enough, I guess. 9: Sheck Wes “Mo Bamba” I don’t know what the fuck I just listened to. This song is like ear herpes. If this is “Mo Bamba,” please put me down for less. 8: Kodak Black ft. Travis Scott & Offset “Zeze” This one’s straight pop rap. Not my cuppa, but fine. Bonus points for the steel drum sample. Minus points for autotune, and the fact that it took three artists to make. 7: Post Malone “Better Now” Sadly, I’m at least peripherally aware of Post Malone, although I’ve never to my knowledge heard his music. He once took Jimmy Fallon to Olive Garden for a bit. It was marginally more entertaining than this air-quotes song, which features—you guessed it—yet more autotune. It’s the cowbell of the twenty-teens. 6: Halsey “Without Me” This is the first song on the list I’m actually familiar with, because it was co-written by a young songwriter from my neck of the woods. (I read about her in the newspaper.) I’m gonna stop pointing out autotune, because so far we’re five for five. You can tell Halsey is edgy because she says fuck. 5: Juice WRLD “Lucid Dreams” It’s super weird to me that this song is based around a sample of Sting’s “Shape of My Heart” off of Ten Summoner’s Tales. It’s also super weird to me that I recognized it immediately. 4. Marshmello ft. Bastille “Happier” In my head, this song is the sequel to Pharrell’s “Happy” that no one asked for. There’s a dog in the video. I’m not sure if he’s Marshmallo or Bastille, but whichever he is, he’s my favorite. 3. Travis Scott “Sicko Mode” The version of this that popped up on YouTube featured Drake. Also a horse. Sadly, Drake was not on the horse. Nor was he credited on the Billboard charts. Poor Drake. I enjoyed his “Werewolf Bar Mitzvah” video, which he for some reason called “Hotline Bling.” Also, Travis Scott’s been on this list twice now, and I still have no idea who the fuck he is. 2. Maroon 5 ft. Cardi B “Girls Like You” I know who all these people are, which probably doesn’t bode well for them, hipness-wise. When Google’s deep learning AI takes over songwriting, all songs will sound like this. It’s still on as I’m typing and I’ve already forgotten it. 1. Ariana Grande “Thank U, Next” All in all, we could do worse than this in the top spot. Ariana Grande can seriously sing. Also, she’s been through some shit. This song’s a shockingly mature rumination on what she’s learned from her previous relationships, released after her breakup with Pete Davidson and the death of her prior ex, Mac Miller. (See? I know stuff about stuff.) Holm: WHAT’S IN THE BOX? The whole thing doesn’t drop until January, but The Bangles’ cover of The Three O’Clock’s “Jet Fighter” is streaming now. “Left of the Dial: Dispatches from the '80s Underground” (released in ’04) This 4-disc Rhino boxed set is a window into one of the weirdest and most fertile periods in contemporary music, when you could tune into a college station hear tracks by, say, The Smiths and Ministry back-to-back. ---------------- All music in the episode: Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 License creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/

Steve Weddle talks with Frank Bill about his new book, DONNYBROOK. An excerpt from the book can be found at the DoSomeDamage blog. (UPDATE: Er, not so much anymore. Head to Frank Bill's blog if you want details on DONNYBROOK.)Here's what folks are saying about the book: "Donnybrook is some serious hillbilly-noir that had my ears ringing by the end. Open the first page... and duck." --Craig Clevenger, author of The Contortionist's Handbook and Dermaphoria “Dark, grim, and achingly beautiful. Frank Bill is one of the most original and compelling voices in this new generation of crime writers, and Donnybrook is nothing short of stunning.” -- John Rector, author of The Cold Kiss and The Grove "Donnybrook is a bellow of rage from the American heartland, and Bill is the new bard of the disaffected rural underclass." -- Roger Smith, acclaimed author of Wake Up Dead "With Donnybrook, Frank Bill has crafted one of the most fearless debut novels I've read in years. Bill has taken the rural noir traditions established by such masters as Larry Brown and Daniel Woodrell and has completely shattered them and reshaped those traditions into the methamphetamine fueled nightmare that is Donnybrook."--Keith Rawson, editor/publisher, Crimefactory Magazine “Donnybrook is the culmination of Frank Bill's craft and style. The story gleams with ruined characters who reflect our drug-adulterated times, and dialogue that captures a singularly American desperation." -- Elaine Ash, editor Beat to a Pulp DONNYBROOK at Carmichael's in Louisville.AS ALWAYS:You can get the podcast by1. In today's special edition of the Do Some Damage podcast, Steve Weddle talks with Lynn Kostoff, author of LATE RAIN, the Do Some Damage book group selection. For more on the DSD Book Group, go here. For more on Do Some Damage, go here. For more on LATE RAIN (Tyrus Books) and Lynn Kostoff, go here.DESCRIPTIONCorrine Tedros is a Lady Macbeth wannabe who sets in motion the murder of her uncle-in-law (a soft-drink mogul), and things go awry when the murder is witnessed by a senior citizen in the late stages of Alzheimers. Things are complicated by the fact that the daughter of the man with Alzheimers is involved with a former homicide detective who has resigned and moved South in an attempt to reshape and simplify his life; on his own, Decovic starts to make connections in the case that cause Corrine Tedros to up the ante in keeping herself out of the murder investigation.A book about desire and need and the fear that drives how far the characters are willing to go to find what they want.REVIEWS“Corrine Tedros decides her elderly uncle-in-law, Stanley, is standing in her way when he refuses to sell his successful South Carolina company to the highest bidder, so through a shady lawyer, she hires a killer to take care of the problem. Jack Carson, a man suffering from Alzheimer’s Disease, witnesses the murder but can’t describe the killer. Meanwhile, Ben Decovic, formerly a homicide detective in Ryland, Ohio, is now a patrolman for the Magnolia Beach Police Department in South Carolina, where he is attempting to recover from a personal tragedy. Although Corrine has made sure she has an alibi, Decovic is suspicious of her reactions and delves into her past, which she has gone to great lengths to conceal. Then Decovic becomes romantically involved with Jack’s daughter, Anne, and events begin to spiral out of control. Kostoff, author of the well-received The Long Fall (2003), returns to crime fiction with what a promising series debut starring a principled cop who is beginning to heal himself.”—Booklist“It’s safe to lump Lynn Kostoff in with Pinckney Benedict and Madison Smartt Bell, which is to say he is a very talented writer who no one will read because they are too busy telling all their friends on Facebook how funny last night’s episode of the hit sitcom “Two Bikini Models and an Adorable Puppy” was. This state of affairs does not fill my heart with hope.”—Independent Crime“Masterful writing, spot on dialogue and insight to the human condition more often associated with literary works than crime fiction, Lynn Kostoff’s Late Rain is one of those rare novels that transcend genre fiction; it is writing at its very best, brilliant from start to finish.”—Charlie Stella author of Johnny Porno“It reminds me a little of the work of Elmore Leonard, only it’s more tightly plotted. This is an excellent novel that makes me eager to read Kostoff’s earlier books.”—James Reasoner“The plot is rich and thick and the subplots connect in ways I wasn’t expecting. There are at least two subplots that are so beautifully understated, my jaw dropped when I finally caught on. If I did. . . I think I did. . .”—Sarah WessonAS ALWAYS:You can get the FREE podcast by1.
