Guest Jennifer Raff is an Associate Professor of Anthropology at the University of Kansas.  She works with Indigenous communities and tribes across North America who wish to use DNA as a tool for investigating questions of recent and more distant histories. Her first book, “Origin: A Genetic History of the Americas,” is a New York Times bestseller and has won multiple awards, including the Phi Beta Kappa book award in science. In 2024 she was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship (General Nonfiction) to support work on her second book. Why This Episode Matters Professor Raff discusses how genetic evidence has changed our understanding of the peopling of the Americas. Rather than a simple crossing of the Bering Land Bridge 13,000 years ago, DNA research suggests a more complex story involving population isolation during the Last Glacial Maximum (26,000-20,000 years ago), followed by multiple migration waves. Recent discoveries, like footprints at White Sands dating to 25,000+ years ago, continue to challenge existing theories. Three Important Takeaways Genetic evidence shows the ancestors of indigenous Americans descended from an isolated East Asian population that experienced gene flow with ancient North Siberians around 25,000 years ago. Beringia wasn't just a narrow "land bridge" but a lost continent twice the size of Texas, with its southern coast relatively habitable during the Last Glacial Maximum. Research in this field requires a multidisciplinary approach that respectfully incorporates indigenous knowledge and perspectives alongside scientific methods. How old are the footprints at White Sands? It depends on who you ask. Scientists are currently divided on this question, but the division is one that is propelling more research with the goal of determining whether humans have been in North America for 23,000 years or closer to 15,000 years.  The ditch weed, or Ruppia, is at the center of this debate. What can a plant tell us about carbon dating to determine the age of the footprints at White Sands? What are the pitfalls of depending on an unreliable organic material? Dr. John Taylor-Montoya, director of the Office of Archaeological Studies, and Dr. David Rachal, a geoarchaeology consultant, have a lot to say about the scientific debate about the age of the footprints—and about the research that needs to be done to resolve the question.  Mentioned in this Episode:  Dr. David Rachal's White Sands research papers White Sands field interview with Dr. David Rachal History, Science, Mythology, and the First Americans article in Summer 2023 issue of El Palacio New Mexico Office of Archaeological Studies We'd love to hear from you! This episode takes us to White Sands National Park in Southern New Mexico, home to the world's largest gypsum dune field. The brilliant white sands form a stunning landscape shaped by both nature and history, offering a glimpse into the unique ecosystems and cultural heritage of the border region. White Sands, once a National Monument, became a National Park in 2019, marking an exciting chapter in its long history. We're joined by Marie Frias Sauter, the park's superintendent since 2012. Marie's journey is as dynamic as the dunes she oversees. Growing up as a dual citizen in Mexico City, her early fascination with geography and cartography led her to study at the University of Georgia, where she witnessed the transformation of traditional map-making into modern GIS technology. Over her career, Marie has lent her expertise to parks across the country, bringing her passion for preservation and innovation to every role.In this episode, Marie shares her insights on managing a park with deep ties to both the Department of Defense and its sister park in Mexico, the evolving science of the gypsum dunes, and the park's soon addition—the Ice Age Trail. She also discusses the discovery of ancient trackways, the thrill of hiking and sledding down the dunes, and the challenges of climate change, including the potential loss of wet dune systems as water tables decline.Join us as we explore Marie's extraordinary career, the vibrant culture of the borderlands, and the unique wonders of White Sands National Park. You can follow Who Runs This Park on TikTok, Instagram, Facebook or YouTube, can email us at info@whorunsthispark.com or check us out online at whorunsthispark.com. Sign up for the Who Runs This Park's newsletter at linktr.ee/whorunsthispark. Who Runs This Park is produced by Maddie Pellman with music by Danielle Bees.

What is a good life, and how do we make sense of the world when it seems like society is collapsing? In this episode, Lucas Bender joins us once again to discuss the work of Du Fu (712-770 C.E.), the great Chinese poet of the Tang Dynasty. Luke helps us to see how Du Fu's “Passing the Night by White Sands Post Station” can be read in multiple ways depending on how one translates each word of the poem. In doing so, he reveals the poem's concerns with aging, disappointment, and the possibility of hope in difficult times. 33-year-old Geoffrey Spangler disappeared from Las Cruces, New Mexico, on November 8, 2021. Geoffrey left home that morning and told his mother he was going to Ruidoso, roughly 2 hours away, to stay in a cabin he rented. Geoffrey's mom, Tracie, never heard from her son again, which was unusual. Tracie contacted the resort where Geoffrey was staying, and he did have a cabin reserved, but they informed her that he had never made it there. Tracie's calls and texts to her son's phone went unanswered. Tracie decided to report her son missing the following morning. As the investigation began, they uncovered a plethora of strange clues that Tracie has spent the last several years attempting to make sense of.If you have any information regarding the disappearance of Geoffrey Spangler, please contact the Las Cruces Police Department at (575) 526-0795.If you have a missing loved one that you would like to have featured on the show, please fill out our case submission form.Follow The Vanished on social media at:FacebookInstagramTwitterPatreonSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

It's hard to think of the White Sands region of New Mexico as confining. It covers thousands of square miles, and few people live there. In the late 1940s, though, the U.S. military was feeling hemmed in. It was launching rockets from White Sands. They could go high, but they couldn't go very far without flying over towns or cities — a possible danger to residents. So Congress passed a bill establishing the Joint Long-Range Proving Ground at Cape Canaveral, on the Atlantic coast of Florida. President Harry Truman signed it into law 75 years ago today. “The Cape,” as it's been known for most of those years, offered many advantages. The region had a small population, the climate wasn't too extreme, and there were thousands and thousands of miles of ocean to plop rockets into. Launches to orbit have benefited from its southern location — rockets get a “boost” from Earth's rotation. It took a year to clear away some of the scrub and build the early launch pads. The U.S. Army launched its first rocket there in July of 1950 — an American-built version of the German V-2 terror weapon. Since then, thousands of rockets have taken flight from the Cape and the facilities on nearby Merritt Island. They've sent satellites into orbit, astronauts to the Moon, and probes to all the planets of the solar system — and beyond. And today, the facilities are busier than ever — at the first American spaceport. Script by Damond Benningfield

BEST OF:The gates and walls of reality seem to be collapsing and our reality seems to be merging with other realities. A 2022 Netflix film called White Noise, about a train carrying toxic chemicals derailing in a small Ohio town, was brought to life when on February 3, 2023, a train carrying toxic chemicals derailed in the same town, East Palestine, Ohio, which was used for filming the movie crash. Some may remember the United Airlines engine that fell onto a neighborhood in Colorado back in February 20, 2021, almost twenty years to the date of the release of Donnie Darko on January 19, 2001. The movie Independence Day, released July 3, 1996, also seemed to predict the appearance of a city-sized UFO, which manifested in Phoenix as the infamous ‘Phoenix Lights' on March 13, 1997. Now with UFOs being shot down in Deadhorse, Alaska, Yukon, Canada, and over Lake Huron, and another detected in Montana, we are learning that at least one of them had “strings hanging off” of it like Jordan Peele's monster-UFO in the movie Nope which was released on July 22, 2022. The Lake Huron UFO was taken down on February 11, 2023. Such a craft reminds us of the 1956 White Sands story of AF sergeant Jonathan P. Lovette who was seen by Major William Cunningham being picked up by some kind of serpentine arm dangling from a silver disc. This all has to mean something. It also reminds us of Kenneth Arnold, who on June 24, 1947, witnessed several aircraft near Mount Rainier that he later described as flying “like a saucer would if you skipped it across the water." Kenneth Arnold was soon asked to investigate the June 21, 1947, Maury Island Incident in Washington State. Both cases took place weeks before the July 7-8, 1947, Roswell incident, of which it was famously reported that the Army Air Force “Captures Flying Saucer.” Before Arnold most UFO reports were of ghost rockets, foo fighters, and cigar-shaped craft by both the military and civilians. Just weeks after his sighting, however, a flying saucer supposedly crashed in Roswell as part of a series of additional crashes. That debris was, of course, called a weather balloon to take our attention away from questioning otherworld origins, and now 75 years later after a spy balloon was shot down of the coast of South Carolina there is renewed interest in the sky, which has resulted in numerous UFOs being detected and shot down. Some also noticed these UFOs are sort of like tic tacs. But we are not calling them UAPs and instead reverting back to UFO. Why? And is our perception of such things also manifesting them? Some are cylindrical and silver, interfere with electronics, and evade radar. Others are octagonal and maybe even evade missiles. Are they probes or drones, test by our enemies or by aliens, or just stunts to make the White House look good, and to obtain more money to investigate UAPs. Perhaps this is just the next collective hysterical reaction to respond to something harmless or misunderstood.

Today we join Lillian Cunningham on a “Field Trip” to one of the most remote and least-visited national parks as she confronts the question facing its future: whether a portion of this untouched wilderness will soon include a path for industry.Read more:Established in 1980, Gates of the Arctic marked a radically different way of thinking about what a national park should be. Compared to previously established parks, it's hard for the public to access. This park is truly undeveloped — there are no roads or infrastructure. And it's immense. You could fit Yosemite, Glacier, Everglades, White Sands, Death Valley and the Grand Canyon within its borders and still have room to spare. But even here, in one of the most remote and least-visited of the national parks, the outside world is finding its way in. Ten miles west of the park, mining companies are drilling for copper. The metal is necessary for a number of green technologies, including electric vehicles, solar panels and wind turbines. The mines could support President Biden's goals to reduce the use of fossil fuels and beef up domestic sources of critical minerals. To access these mines, the state has proposed an access road that would cut through 211 miles of Arctic tundra. Twenty-six miles of the road would cross through Gates of the Arctic. Biden has pledged to conserve nearly a third of U.S. land and water by 2030, and his administration has stopped similar mining projects. Environmentalists and some Native American groups are also fighting to have the wilderness preserved.Subscribe to “Field Trip” here or wherever you're listening to this podcast.

We discuss some recent scientific discoveries in detail, reading from articles and the source papers about ancient solar storms that caused a massive increase in Carbon 14 in the atmosphere, and fossil prints at White Sands that definitively breaks the "Clovis First" model of the peopling of the Americas. In the final segment we discuss a bit about where our minds are at regarding all these mysteries, as well as future plans for exploration on the podcast and in the field. A new analysis of ancient footprints in New Mexico adds to the debate about when humans arrived in North America. Plus, astronomer Dean Regas offers tips for safe viewing of Saturday's eclipse. New Data Support Human Arrival In North America 22,000 Years AgoIn 2021, scientists uncovered ancient human footprints in White Sands, New Mexico. Dating of the footprints suggested that people arrived in North America thousands of years earlier than anthropologists had thought. It sparked fierce debate among researchers, some of whom raised concerns about the radiocarbon dating process used in the original study. Now, a new study provides additional data supporting humans' arrival in North America 22,000 years ago.Ira talks with Maggie Koerth, editorial lead at Carbon Plan about the latest in this debate about the peopling of North America and other top science news of the week including how solar storms affect bird migration, why ants are getting ensnared in plastic, and how climate change is improving Bordeaux wine. This Weekend's ‘Ring Of Fire' EclipseThis Saturday, much of the continental United States will be treated to an astronomical event—an annular solar eclipse. In this type of eclipse, the apparent sizes of the moon and sun don't align perfectly to Earth-bound viewers, resulting in a solar “ring of fire” shining around the edges of a moon nestled inside the boundaries of the sun.The best viewing will come in a 125-mile-wide band known as the path of annularity, which will stretch from Eugene, Oregon to San Antonio, Texas, and then on into Mexico and Central America. Viewers outside that band will still be able to see some parts of the eclipse, with the percent coverage depending on how far they are from that central line.    Even though the sun will be partly covered, it is NOT safe to look directly at the sun without eclipse glasses. If you don't have glasses, you can look at a projection of the sun through a pinhole onto the ground or another surface—but don't look through the pinhole at the sun. Astronomer and author Dean Regas joins Ira for an eclipse preview, and to offer viewing tips on when, where, and how to best view the solar event.  To stay updated on all things science, sign up for Science Friday's newsletters.Transcripts for each segment will be available the week after the show airs on sciencefriday.com.

The much-anticipated movie “Oppenheimer” opens today – about the scientist who led the development of the atomic bomb. On “Post Reports,” we're joining The Post's Lillian Cunningham on a journey to the site of the bomb's first test.Read more:White Sands National Park contains a geological rarity: the largest field of gypsum sand dunes anywhere on Earth. The blinding white dunes stretch for miles in every direction, dazzling tourists, inviting selfies and sled rides. But there's much more to this park than meets the eye. White Sands National Park, one of the newest in the system, is embedded within White Sands Missile Range, the largest military installation in the country. Today the missile range is a testing ground for cutting-edge weapons. It's also home to the Trinity site, where the first test of an atomic bomb was conducted in 1945. In that instant, the sand beneath the bomb fused into greenish glass. And life changed forever for people living in communities nearby. That same sand also holds evidence of humanity's origins on this continent. One observant park ranger at White Sands National Park has spent years uncovering footprints delicately preserved in the shifting sand. Those tracks have painted a picture of prehistoric families living alongside mammoths and giant ground sloths. They've also raised new questions about just how long ago the first people might have crossed into North America. In this episode of “Field Trip,” Washington Post reporter Lillian Cunningham visits these two very different sites in the New Mexico desert and asks why this landscape has been both safeguarded and sacrificed.
