“You have been weighed. You have been measured. And you have been found wanting.” Join Ian & Liam for our 331st episode as we joust for glory, dance to Queen in medieval Europe, and revisit Brian Helgeland's wildly anachronistic crowd-pleaser A Knight's Tale (2001). Megs isn't with us this week — she's apparently been appointed to the royal court after successfully inventing modern fashion 600 years early. Kev? Last seen trying to enter a jousting tournament under a fake noble title before being immediately exposed by Paul Bettany. This week we discuss: Heath Ledger's breakout leading-man performance — charming, earnest, rebellious. Was this the moment Hollywood realised he could do absolutely anything? The film's glorious tonal chaos — medieval sports movie, romantic comedy, rock concert, underdog drama. Why does this bizarre cocktail somehow work? Paul Bettany's Chaucer — flamboyant, scene-stealing, and possibly the film's secret MVP. Liam breaks down the film's anachronisms — Queen, Bowie, Nike-energy editing. Does the film transcend historical accuracy through sheer confidence? Ian explores the underdog narrative — class, identity, and whether William's rise actually challenges the social order or merely slips inside it. The romance between William and Jocelyn — genuine chemistry or the weakest part of the film? The sports-movie structure — training montages, rivalries, and comeback arcs dressed in chainmail. The “show vs tell” balance — does the film earn its emotional moments through character work, or simply overwhelm you with charisma and music? Rufus Sewell's Count Adhemar — classic villainy, simmering resentment, and one of the great sneering performances of the era. What's with the romantic plot's detour in Act II - where did that come from? The ending — triumphant, ridiculous, emotionally earned… or all three simultaneously? And finally, whether A Knight's Tale is the Best Film Ever — or simply one of the most aggressively lovable films of the 2000s. After his master dies, William Thatcher (Heath Ledger) pretends to be a noble knight and enters high-stakes jousting tournaments. With help from his loyal friends, he trains, competes, and rises in status, even catching the attention of a noblewoman, Jocelyn (Shannon Sossamon). But his secret threatens to ruin everything as rivals grow suspicious.Chapters:00:00 Introduction, Cast, and Background to A Knight's Tale02:59 Dana's First Time, Tom's 28th06:47 Heath Ledger14:04 Plot Summary for A Knight's Tale17:08 Did You Know?19:40 First Break20:20 Best Performance(s)26:50 Best Scene(s)29:20 Second Break29:58 In Memoriam37:15 Best/Funniest Lines40:44 The Stanley Rubric - Legacy43:55 The Stanley Rubric - Impact/Significance46:02 The Stanley Rubric - Novelty48:34 The Stanley Rubric - Classicness49:32 The Stanley Rubric - Rewatchability50:53 The Stanley Rubric - Audience Score and Final Total52:21 Remaining Questions for A Knight's Tale59:31 Remaining Thoughts and Dana's Announcement01:05:09 CreditsYou can also find this episode in full video on YouTube. You can now follow us on Instagram, Twitter, Bluesky, Threads, YouTube, or TikTok (@gmoatpodcast).For more on the episode, go to: https://www.ronnyduncanstudios.com/post/a-knight-s-tale-2001For the entire rankings list so far, go to: https://www.ronnyduncanstudios.com/post/greatest-movie-of-all-time-listKeywords:A Knight's Tale, Heath Ledger, medieval sports film, film analysis, movie legacy, film music, film trivia, 2001 movies, film critique, cult classics, sports moviesRonny Duncan Studios

In which the Mister and Monsters join me in reviewing 42 (2013) from writer/director Brian Helgeland. Brooklyn Dodgers general manager Branch Rickey (Harrison Ford) makes the historic and controversial decision to sign Jackie Robinson (Chadwick Boseman), effectively breaking the color barrier in Major League Baseball. Robinson is thrust into a world of intense racial hostility, facing everything from hateful slurs and death threats to internal friction within his own dugout. As he navigates his rookie season, Robinson must summon the immense self-control to "not fight back" with his fists, instead using his remarkable talent and quiet dignity to challenge a segregated nation's prejudices on the diamond. The film clocks in at 2 h and 8 m, is rated PG-13 and you can find it on HBO Max and on Prime Video to buy/rent. We continue our look at Los Angeles-set neo-noir films, this time with the 1997 Academy Award-winning L.A. Confidential. Russell Crowe, Guy Pearce, and Kevin Spacey star as three very different LAPD detectives in a changing city where some cops embrace the corruption, some look the other way, and some are determined to root it out. An investigation into a series of murders in 1950s Los Angeles threatens to expose what's really going on beneath the sunny, shiny surface. Based on the novel by James Ellroy, L.A. Confidential was directed by Curtis Hanson and also stars Kim Basinger, James Cromwell, Danny DeVito, David Strathairn, and Ron Rifkin. It was nominated for 9 Oscars including Best Picture, winning two: Best Supporting Actress, Kim Basinger; and Best Adapted Screenplay, Brian Helgeland and Curtis Hanson.
Sorry we're late, half of us had covid! He's actually fine, he just had no voice for a while. And his personality is odd, but that's normal. This month we revisited the 2001 cult classic A Knight's Tale! Written and directed by Brian Helgeland and starring the late great Heath Ledger, A Knight's Tale is a mostly light anachronistic romantic comedy sports movie period piece coming of age tale... kind of. The manatees talk accents, pasta, what music even existed in medieval times, and whether or not the main character even needs an antagonist. Also, there's like a solid half hour of catching up on account of the aforementioned covid, so this one's EXTRA sleep inducing. (Or you can skip forward.) Float along with us and have a movie night, why doncha?
On this Thursday bonus episode we are going to play the interview from episode 454 from December 2023 featuring writer and director Brian Helgeland who talks about making his latest feature Finestkind starring Ben Foster and Tommy Lee Jones.Alrik thought it would be fun to pair Brain with Chuck Russell from Monday because Brain also directed some really big and monumental movies in Alrik's life from the 90s, namely Payback. Coming off the back of the film Payback, Oscar-winning writer/director Brian Helgeland feared he might be in movie jail. Thus, he got writing, and came up with A Knight's Tale, a film mixing jousting, modern music, Heath Ledger, and a naked Paul Bettany. It took months to shoot in Europe. When it came to the music, David Bowie turned up. And then there's the tale of its sequel that never was. King Arthur: Legend Of The Sword meanwhile was to be the first of six films, as originally pitched. Guy Ritchie came in to direct, and star Charlie Hunnam would admit that the film they started making wasn't the one they ended up with. Quite the story, though. Includes elephants and David Beckham. Tales of both are told in this episode. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Welcome back to The Video Store Podcast. This week, I've curated a lineup of films that capture different aspects of Los Angeles: its humor, its struggles, its danger, and its intrigue. Whether you're a longtime fan of these movies or discovering them for the first time, I think they're worth your time. Here's what we're watching this week:L.A. Story (1991)Steve Martin stars in and wrote this quirky romantic comedy that doubles as a love letter to Los Angeles. It's full of surreal humor, like talking freeway signs, and it pokes fun at the city's obsession with image and trends. But it's also heartfelt, exploring how we connect with others in a place that can feel isolating. Keep an eye out for some great cameos, including Patrick Stewart as a hilariously serious maître d'. The film was shot all around L.A., including Griffith Park and Venice Beach, which really adds to its sense of place.Born in East L.A. (1987)Cheech Marin wrote, directed, and stars in this comedy about a Mexican-American man who gets mistakenly deported to Mexico. It's packed with laughs, but it also has a lot of heart as it explores cultural misunderstandings. Make sure to check out Paul Rodriguez and Daniel Stern both have memorable roles here, adding to the film's charm. To Live and Die in L.A. (1985)If you're into crime thrillers, this one's a must. Directed by William Friedkin (The Exorcist, The French Connection), it's a gritty and intense look at the darker side of Los Angeles. The film follows a Secret Service agent, played by William Petersen, as he becomes obsessed with catching a counterfeiter (Willem Dafoe). Friedkin's commitment to authenticity shows, especially in the car chases, which are some of the best ever put on film. The movie also features an amazing soundtrack by Wang Chung, which perfectly complements its tense, stylish vibe.L.A. Confidential (1997)Curtis Hanson's neo-noir is a masterpiece. Set in the 1950s, it dives into corruption, scandal, and ambition within the LAPD. The ensemble cast, including Kevin Spacey, Guy Pearce, Kim Basinger, and Russell Crowe, delivers some of their best work. Basinger even won an Oscar for her performance. The screenplay, co-written by Hanson and Brian Helgeland, is a brilliant adaptation of James Ellroy's novel. The production design and costumes perfectly recreate the glamour and grit of post-war Los Angeles, making it as visually striking as it is narratively gripping. That's the lineup for this week. Each of these films captures something unique about Los Angeles, from its humor and charm to its danger and complexity. If you decide to check out any of these, let me know what you think. Thanks for stopping by The Video Store Podcast, and we'll see you next time with more movies to add to your watchlist. This is a public episode. None of the Hollywood studios wanted to make 2010's Kick-Ass, a comic book movie with an R-rated edge. All of them turned it down, and so the film came to life in tandem with the comics, exploding into cinemas in 2010. It would be fair to say that not everyone in the media was pleased about it, as quite a backlash bubbled up. There were problems with 1999's Payback too, but they came down to a different of opinion between star Mel Gibson and writer/director Brian Helgeland. It got to a point where just days after Helgeland won an Oscar for L.A. Confidential, he was, er, 'removed' from Payback. The behind the scenes stories of both films are told in this episode... Payback was something of a surprise - and largely forgotten - minor hit, riding mostly on the coattails of Mel Gibson at the height of his popularity and box office appeal, having come off a string of hits, including 1994's Maverick, 1995's Oscar-winning Braveheart, 1996's Ransom, and 1997's Conspiracy Theory, as well as the prestige of Brian Helgeland, who had just won an avalanche awards, including the Oscar, for writing LA Confidential as well as the aforementioned Conspiracy Theory. But the production of Payback also opened a window to some of the personal and professional issues surrounding Gibson that would become increasingly apparent in the years leading up to his career crash in the mid-2000s. Unhappy with the direction of the film Helgeland wrote and director, Gibson had Helgeland fired and reworked and reshot much of the movie, adding Kristofferson's character to the story and changing much of the tone and arc of the main character Porter. As a result, Payback is actually two movies - the theatrically-released Gibson vision released in 1999 and the Helgeland cut, released on Blu-ray 7 years later, officially titled Payback: Straight Up. We had writer and Payback superfan Jim Woods on to talk about both! You can find out everything you need to know about Jim on his website: Jim Woods Writes

In the gritty underbelly of Chicago, Payback serves up a heaping plate of revenge and betrayal—all wrapped up in a slick, neo-noir package. Starring Mel Gibson as Porter, this 1999 hit plunges viewers into a world where loyalty is as rare as a clean getaway. After being double-crossed by his wife (Maria Bello) and his partner (Gregg Henry) during a heist, Porter finds himself on the wrong end of a bullet and a whole lot of betrayal. Left for dead and robbed of his cut, he rises from the ashes with one thing on his mind: payback. As he navigates a seedy landscape filled with mobsters, corrupt cops, and a femme fatale, Porter's quest for vengeance becomes a thrilling, action-packed ride. Directed by Brian Helgeland, Payback is not just a tale of revenge; it's a study in the moral ambiguities of crime, loyalty, and the lengths one will go to reclaim what's theirs. With sharp dialogue, brutal action sequences, and a tongue-in-cheek humor that keeps you on your toes, this film is a must-watch for fans of the genre. Join us as we dive deep into the film's themes, iconic moments, and Gibson's unforgettable performance, breaking down why Payback deserves a spot in your watchlist. Riding high off of their Lethal Weapon partnership, filmmaker Richard Donner and star Mel Gibson had every reason to believe their high concept action thriller Conspiracy Theory would be a success. And with the help of superstar Julia Roberts, a villainous turn by Patrick Stewart and a script by Oscar winner Brian Helgeland, it was, at least modestly so. Get to the bottom of why Sebastian and The Mighty Peculiar podcast's Matt Anderson are covering this problematic in hindsight, brain boiling entry in the 90s thriller genre.

In the conversation, he discusses retaining the film's authenticity in its Irish cast and texture of its 1970s setting, balancing the tone with moments of humor and severity, and using landscape shots of the remote Irish location to accentuate the mood of the film. linktr.ee/CatchingUpOnCinema This February is “Frame of Reference” month at Catching Up On Cinema! All month long, Trevor and Kyle will be reviewing films that have frequently been referenced in recent episodes of the podcast. Due to a technical snafu, our initial review this month, of Brian Helgeland's, Payback (1999) had to be re-recorded as a solo affair, featuring only Trevor on the mic. A grim neo-noir crime thriller, Payback (1999) was prolific Hollywood writer Brian Helgeland's feature directorial debut. Apparently a somewhat contentious production, Helgeland was apparently ousted from the production at some point during filming. Despite often being criticized for its cruel atmosphere, the film would later receive a director's cut, overseen by Helgeland, that is considerably shorter than the theatrical cut, though it is up for debate which version is the superior cut.
