Send us a textFebruary 1 is National Baked Alaska Day. April 14 is National Ex-Spouse Day, but April 22 marks Earth Day. We've had these (and more!) national days celebrating things silly and crucial, but we've never had a National Mississippi River Day. Until this year. It's long overdue. On June 2, we'll celebrate the first National Mississippi River Day. In this episode, I talk with Michael Anderson, the Director of Outreach and Education for One Mississippi, about it.  Michael begins by sharing a story about how the river lifted him out of a deep emotional hole and inspired him to help other people connect in their own ways to the Big River. He explains how his work at One Mississippi has helped grow a river-based community of 20,000 plus people who enjoy the Mississippi and take action to help protect it. He describes the varied ways people connect with the river and how any of us can find a way to build a new or deeper connection with the Mississippi, perhaps on the inaugural National Mississippi River Day. We talk about the events happening for National Mississippi River Day, as well as for the two following weeks known as River Days of Action. We finish with a few thoughts about what makes the Mississippi such a unique and special place. In the Mississippi Minute, I offer a few thoughts about our work to protect the Mississippi and what we need to consider to do differently in the days and years ahead.

Send us a textThe American political system has been hijacked, but by whom? In this eye-opening conversation with returning guest Michael Anderson, we dive deep into what he calls "America's counterfeit democracy" – a system where the appearance of democratic choice masks the overwhelming control exercised by billionaires and corporate interests.Anderson's analysis cuts through partisan noise with some startling statistics: when the wealthy favor legislation, it passes 90% of the time; when only the public supports it, the success rate plummets to just 3%. Through his extensive research, Anderson identifies three key mechanisms the power elite use to maintain control: populating the executive branch with their own, funding lobbying efforts, and financing political campaigns. The result? A government that primarily serves the rich while the concerns of average Americans go unaddressed. Our conversation takes a fascinating turn when examining Trump's presidency through this lens. Despite criticisms of his personal style, Anderson argues that Trump may be "the most important president in 50 years" precisely because he represents a rare populist challenge to the entrenched establishment. This perspective invites listeners to look beyond personality and party affiliation to understand the deeper forces reshaping American politics.Whether you lean left, right, or consider yourself politically independent, this conversation offers valuable insights into the forces controlling our political system and how ordinary citizens might begin to reclaim their power. Check out Anderson's Substack at https://mikea0418.substack.com/and his book "America's Counterfeit Democracy" for more of his incisive analysis. Please note that COVID-19 Pandemic vaccine discussion is strictly opinion. Welcome to this week's episode of The Mixed Tape with Scott. I'm your host, Scott Cunningham. This podcast is devoted to the personal stories of living economists, diving into their lives, careers, and the fascinating paths they've walked. This week's guest is Michael Anderson, an economist from the University of California Berkeley's Department of Agricultural Resource Economics. Michael earned his PhD at MIT in 2006 under the mentorship of Josh Angrist, making him part of a broader narrative I've been exploring—the Princeton Industrial Relations Section and the influential lineage of scholars who shaped the modern credibility revolution in economics. In our conversation, we touch on Michael's rich and varied research. We discuss his insights into the returns to college athletic success, delve into his foundational work on the Perry Preschool program and the challenge of multiple inference, and explore the real-world impacts outlined in his American Economic Review paper on subway strikes and slowdowns. As always, though, this episode is much more than just research highlights—it's about Michael's journey through economics, his stories, and the experiences that have defined his path. Ortega discussed the challenges of sustaining an artistic career, the need for diversifying one's creative outlets, and the spiritual and communal aspects of his work. He also talked about influential mentors, the value of risk-taking, and his desire to create large-scale public sculptures. On top of discussing his work as a large-scale metal artist, we also dive into Hector's second venture, Silver Lining Metals Stamps, where he handcrafts custom metal stamping tools used by artists and makers around the world.
