Is ADHD self-diagnosis valid? According to clinical psychologist Dr. Elizabeth Kilmer, that's the wrong question entirely. When access to diagnosis is limited by cost, insurance, stigma, and identity — and when the people who self-diagnose show higher rates of negative self-image and internalized stigma — the real conversation isn't about validity. It's about how we make sure people have access to good information. Cate and Dr. Kilmer dig into what really happens when people research their own neurodivergence. They discuss research analyzing 452,000 Reddit posts that found self-diagnosed individuals seek more social validation. But they benefit less from it. They cover what actually happens in a clinical ADHD assessment and how comorbidities like anxiety, depression, and OCD complicate the picture. And they discuss why the question “Is self-diagnosis valid?” misses the point when getting a formal diagnosis is a privilege that many can't access. Hello! And welcome to The Dana Gould Hour Podcast. Fasten your enthusiasm harness, we are blasting off, yet again.   This episode is a little late arriving, my apologies. In addition to my going on staff at a new TV show, which has forced me to rearrange my schedule a bit, we also had the taping of the Dr. Z live show at the Netflix Is A Joke Festival and the launching of the Hanging With Dr. Z season 4 Indiegogo campaign.   Then we had some technical difficulties that delayed us a bit as we cleaned up some recordings and, long story short, we're late. BUT, we're here now and the next month's episode is right on schedule so we should be all caught up in no time.   We're going to start this month's episode with a discussion of Hel Mel. What is Hel Mel you ask? Well, it's short for the intersection of Heliotrope and Melrose Ave in Los Angeles, which is an arty little neighborhood over by LA City College. And it's also the name of an art gallery and art collective, located there, that was formed by actor Val Kilmer. We're going to talk to Steven Meyer, who was a longtime friend of Kilmer who ran the gallery with him. Steven has had a wide-ranging career stretching from the New York theater and music scene stretching to well, the LA art scene. Excellent conversation with Steven Meyer.   Also, Julian David Stone is here. Julian grew up in the Bay Area where he started his career as a rock 'n' roll photographer, and he's here to talk about his book of photography, No Cameras Allowed: My Career As An Outlaw Rock N Roll Photographer. In addition, He has a new novel out called It's Alive, which is a novel, but based in the very true story of the tumult, chaos and corporate fuckery that went on behind the scenes at the Universal Studios in 1930, the week before the studio began filming Frankenstein. One of the studio's all-time hits, a film with a culture impact that we still feel today, and the week before it started filming, the whole thing almost fell apart. If you like horror movies, or just movies, it's must read. Especially when you realize that what happened at Universal during this short period in 1930, is STILL going on today. Bananas.   True Tales From Weirdsville tells you the sordid tale of a man who came to be known as The Emperor Of Night, The Marquis d'Hervey De Saint Denys, who, in the 1800's discovered for lack of a better term, the concept of lucid dreaming. Dreams when you know you know you're dreaming. This concept moved through the history and is still with us today. The conceit that you can actually write and direct your dreams. It's TRUE. Lucid dreaming. It's real. I think. Or is it?   As for me, on Saturday May 16th I'll be at the Historic Everett Theater in Everett Washington, just up the road from Seattle. On Saturday June 27th I'll be in Pittsburgh, PA as part of the DVE Comedy Festival and fans of Hanging with Dr Z are invited to be a part of our season 4 Indiegogo campaign. For information on all this stuff, please visit the live appearances page at DanaGould.com or, my Facebook or Instagram pages.   You can follow Dr Z on Instagram at HangingWithDrZ.com in case you didn't know.   Lastly, thank God, this program is brought to by you. Reaction to our interview with Charles Milliard, and his stance on the use of the notwithstanding clause? His position on Bill 96 caused him a lot of grief yesterday, with the Gazette reporting that “Milliard was forced to call a special crisis meeting” to manage his MNAs surprised by the new position. A new poll by the Montreal Economic Institute shows that 56 percent of Canadians want greater access to private healthcare. In an open letter in Le Devoir, PQ leader Paul St-Pierre Plamondon invokes the words of former Quebec Premier Honoré Mercier and calls on nationalists in the province to stop tearing each other apart and come together. Before passing away in April of last year, actor Val Kilmer of Top Gun fame was supposed to take on a new role in the upcoming movie called “As Deep as the Grave”. After his death, the director of the movie did not want to change who played Kilmer’s role and has decided to rely on AI to keep him in the movie.

Apologies for the strange 'chop' underlying the audio in parts...Today Matt & Todd dive into the 1996 African‑adventure / animal‑horror thriller The Ghost and the Darkness.Arriving in theaters with a fair amount of mid‑90s buzz, the film has since become a bit forgotten—despite starring Val Kilmer and Michael Douglas, boasting a tight script by William Goldman, striking visuals, and Oscar‑winning sound design. Reviews at the time were mixed‑to‑positive, and the movie turned a modest profit, but it never quite broke through the way its pedigree suggested it might. We enjoyed the film's supernatural-ish tone even if it was an element that landed badly to insufferably for some viewers. It can be hard to root for the “heroes,” even the movie versions as dynamic as Douglas is, or as charming as Kilmer, once you understand the historical context. But taken as a cinematic experience, what we think it's really about is a beautifully shot, atmospheric thriller that embraces its setting, its legend, and the eerie campfire‑story energy at the heart of the tale. It's a compelling fireside tale brought to life by a strong cast, including:Michael Douglas as Charles RemingtonVal Kilmer as Colonel John Henry PattersonJohn Kani as SamuelBernard Hill as David HawthorneWhit Bissell Award Winner Tom Wilkinson as Sir Robert BeaumontEmily Mortimer as Helena PattersonOm Puri as AbdullahHenry Cele as MahinaBrian McCardie as Angus StarlingA little mythical (perhaps), a little messy, but still one of the more unique “man‑eater” films out there, The Ghost and the Darkness remains an entertaining slice of 90s adventure‑horror filmmaking.Matt has over 100+ lists for movie suggestions on LetterboxdYou can reach out on Bluesky: @MovieMattSirois Terrible movies often find him, even under under the alias Marcus at Movie Asylum of the Weird, Bad and Wonderful.Follow who we follow:Once Upon a Geek and  The Fade Out Podcast

A jury in Adams County, Ohio, ruled unanimously in favor of rapper Afroman (Joseph Foreman) by dismissing all 13 defamation and privacy claims filed by seven sheriff’s deputies. The deputies had argued that Afroman’s viral music videos—such as “Lemon Pound Cake,” featuring footage from a 2022 raid—damaged their reputations and caused threats, but the court found his videos were protected speech. Val Kilmer will be resurrected via AI for a posthumous role in the feature film As Deep as the Grave. Using generative AI with approval from Kilmer’s estate and family, the late actor’s likeness and voice will portray Father Fintan—his only role—despite never having filmed any scenes due to terminal illness. Top Secret! (1984) was chosen by Dave, and it arrived during a golden era for absurdist American comedy. Directed by the Zucker-Abrahams-Zucker team — Jim Abrahams, David Zucker, and Jerry Zucker — the film followed the massive success of Airplane! (1980) as the trio continued refining their signature style of rapid-fire sight gags, visual jokes, and deadpan delivery. Rather than parodying a single film, the production blended elements of Cold War spy thrillers with the glossy style of Elvis-era musical films, creating a deliberately ridiculous mash-up that leaned fully into the trio's love of relentless, layered comedy. The film also marked the first starring role for Val Kilmer, who was cast largely because of his musical ability as well as his comedic timing. Production took place primarily in the United Kingdom, with elaborate sets and carefully staged visual gags that often required precise choreography and multiple takes. The filmmakers invested heavily in practical effects and cleverly staged illusions to achieve some of the movie's more elaborate jokes. While Top Secret! performed modestly at the box office compared to the team's earlier success, it gradually developed a strong cult following, and today it's widely regarded as one of the most densely packed gag comedies of the 1980s.TRAILER GUY PLOT SYNOPSISFrom the creators of some of the most outrageous comedies ever made… comes a mission so ridiculous, it might actually work. When an all-American rock star suddenly finds himself caught in a world of secret agents, suspicious governments, and impossible missions, the result is chaos on an international scale. With danger around every corner and nonsense at every turn, nothing is quite what it seems.Top Secret! — the spy movie where the jokes come faster than the bullets.FUN FACTSTop Secret! was Val Kilmer's film debut, launching the career of the future star of Top Gun and The Doors.Kilmer performed all of the singing himself, recording several full musical numbers for the film. The filmmakers created one famous scene by building an entire set backwards and having actors perform actions in reverse. The movie contains one of the highest joke-per-minute rates of any comedy film, packed with background gags and blink-and-you-miss-it jokes. Many of the film's jokes parody 1950s Elvis Presley musicals, including the musical performances. The filmmakers encouraged audiences to watch the movie multiple times, knowing many jokes would be missed on a first viewing.Several gags in the film rely on carefully timed visual illusions, which required extensive rehearsal during production. The movie has become a cult favorite among comedy fans, often ranked alongside Airplane! and The Naked Gun.A number of jokes were edited differently in international versions of the film. The film's layered humor means fans still discover new background jokes decades after its release.Support the ShowIf you enjoy the show and would like to support us, we have a Patreon here.If you're listening on Apple Podcasts or Spotify, leaving us a 5-star review (and a short comment) really helps more people discover the show. Shat the Movies: 80's & 90's Best Film Review

This week, Shat The Movies heads behind the Iron Curtain—or at least a Zucker-Abrahams-Zucker version of it—with Top Secret!, the absurdist spy spoof that introduced the world to Val Kilmer as a legitimately charismatic movie star who could also sing, dance, and commit fully to absolute nonsense. Long before Top Gun or The Doors, Kilmer was playing it dead serious in a movie where cows wear boots and visual gags never stop firing. Gene and Big D break down how Top Secret! feels like the forgotten middle child between Airplane! and The Naked Gun, debate whether the joke density is impressive or exhausting, and marvel at Kilmer's willingness to anchor chaos with charm. Along the way, they revisit the underwater bar fight, backward bookstore scene, relentless wordplay, and why this movie rewards obsessive rewatching more than almost any comedy of its era. Is Top Secret! peak parody—or a cult classic that only works if you surrender completely to the bit? Latrine! It's our first time re-visiting a film (we originally covered GUN in the bad old drunk days of this pod if you want to hear it, just check it out by joining our supporters club!) and it's a special episode because we also get to talk extensively about Val Kilmer's filmography, with plenty of incredible insight thanks to our guest. Also, WE'RE SORRY ABOUT THE SONG!!!! We had such a lovely conversation, and the song we chose is a ridiculous crass 50 cent thing about crankin' it that we had ready before we even recorded. So you'll get whiplash going from the movie part of the pod to the music part, which Emma couldn't be present for. Song is secretly a banger though. Thus is the duality of this stupid podcast.Anyway, support Emma below

It is time once more to enter the gates of VAL-halla, our retrospective series on the late Hollywood icon Val Kilmer. Paul, Arlo, and Eric set their sights on what are possibly Kilmer's two best performances. First, in Oliver Stone's psychedelic biopic The Doors, Val embodies the Lizard King himself, Mr. Mojo Rising, Jim Morrison; and then, in George P.  Cosmatos'--or is that Kurt Russell's?--glossy Western Tombstone, Kilmer brings new life to Doc Holliday. The gang discusses Val's generational run in the '90s; why The Doors works when most rock biopics don't; and debate the merits of '90s Westerns. Plus, a brief sojourn into the world of Alien: Earth.   NEXT: because journalism matters, we're doing an episode all about AMC's Interview with the Vampire. What is up, everyone?!We're back -- after a small pause -- with another episode featuring a guest, and I'm thrilled to share, regardless of how LinkedIn-y that sounds -- that I was lucky enough to see my interview with Phil Kilmer to the other side.Meaning, it took a year and-a-half to make it happen. Which is fun!In that vein, I'll pause for two seconds to say thank you to anyone that's ever replied to my outreach, and everyone that has helped me to see an episode come to finished-product state by committing, showing up, and being awesome. I'm really excited to see that the 200 mark is right around the corner, and -- as of this moment -- I have a small dose of confidence in me that we'll get there.Where it goes from there is anybody's guess.Anyway...Phil Kilmer is a son, a boyfriend, a father, a presence in academia, a physical therapist, a doctorate candidate, and I'm -- in botching this list -- not even doing his whole Curriculum Vitae justice.Regardless, we talked about Frost on the Flint Band, the Lovegrass Music Festival, being a musician, a diehard soccer fan, and...well, we also had a decent look at a few of Phil's favorite albums, which were these:Live at the Old Quarter (1977), Townes Van ZandtJohn Prine's Bruised Orange (1978)Uprising (1980), Bob MarleySplit Lip Rayfield's Never Make It Home (2001)Renewal (2021), Billy StringsChatting with Phil was super-fantastic, and I'd be remiss to not encourage you to give both the Walnut Valley Festival as well as the Lovegrass Music Festival consideration when planning your next bit of PTO.
