The Los Angeles Lakers find themselves in an all-too-familiar spot: As free agents sign elsewhere, they are stuck sitting on their hands on the off chance that maybe, a year from now, some superstar might be coming.  Others have pointed this out, obviously, but it’s worth repeating: However much the person making the decisions is liked (especially compared to their predecessor), that doesn’t change the fact that Magic Johnson and Rob Pelinka are repeating the exact same process that had so many frustrated with Jim Buss and Mitch Kupchak. Also of note is how many of those who have been connected to the Lakers since free agency started have ties either to Rob Pelinka’s days as an agent or have recently played for the Lakers. Hosts Harrison Faigen and Anthony Irwin discussed their thoughts on Rajon Rondo, Dion Waiters and more players that have met with the Lakers. Then, Fred Katz of Locked on Thunder joined to take us through the Paul George trade and how likely he might be to re-sign in OKC long-term. Learn more about your ad choices. On a day where Lonzo Ball released a $500 basketball shoe, you just knew the show was going to be kind of a weird one. First, as front offices changes continue to roll in, Harrison and I expanded on the conversation we started last show. It’s pretty clear at this point that Magic Johnson and Rob Pelinka want their people holding the jobs previously filled by Jim Buss or Mitch Kupchak hires. Then, after the break, we answer a couple questions from you, the listeners. Seeing as you can’t hear much about Lakers trade rumors without at some point seeing Paul George’s name come up, it is pretty fair to wonder how it would work if the Lakers are able to acquire him without giving up Brandon Ingram. In short, you just kind of have to make it work when you can get a talent of George’s level. The second question asked pertained to Chris Paul, who neither Harrison nor I believe is going anywhere, but we did expand on the topic to discuss how the Lakers should handle free agency this year. We’re sure both topics will come up again sooner rather than later. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

The Los Angeles Lakers remain the most relevant second-worst team in the history of the National Basketball Association because of course they would. With Harrison (DNP-CD) out, I enlisted Darius Soriano of Forum Blue & Gold to talk about all the goings on surrounding our Lakers. The Buss siblings continue to air dirty laundry publicly, so that gave plenty of talking points. How big a mistake has it been for Jim Buss to sit idly by while Jeanie Buss remains so well-connected in the media? Short answer: It hurt greatly. At the end of the day, though, the Lakers need to move forward. So Darius and I spoke about some of the issues they’ve dealt with, but with an eye on the future. The moves have been made. It’s time to see what they might produce. From there, the conversation shifted to the current Lakers and what we’ve seen from D’Angelo Russell in his newly-expanded role. What’s made him more successful of late? We wrap with a brief conversation about Jordan Clarkson and whether the Lakers might’ve squandered an otherwise exciting prospect. With the trade deadline behind us and Magic Johnson squarely at the helm of the Los Angeles Lakers, fans finally get a chance to catch their breath collectively. So, what better time to bring on friend of the show Chris McGee (or Geeter, as we’re all legally supposed to call him because Magic said so) of Spectrum SportsNet for a second time around to talk about everything that’s been going on. There is plenty to talk about. First, we get how he found out about the Jim Buss, Mitch Kupchak and John Ireland firings — and how they affected the volleyball he was supposed to play with Luke Walton. Then, we got his thoughts on the move and what it might mean for the Lakers moving forward. Thursday was also trade deadline day, so we spoke to him about what trading Lou Williams means both for the team right now and what message it sends about the organization’s direction on the whole. The conversation then veers towards Walton’s coaching style, expectations for the season moving forward, and we send Marcelo Huertas off in style. Learn more about your ad choices. They discuss how this went down, with Magic Johnson taking over as president of basketball operations and Jim Buss and Mitch Kupchak being fired. Sam has interview Lakers owner and governor Jeanie Buss on several occasions and knew this kind of move was in the works. He discusses what went into the decision and who could possibly take over as general manager for Kupchak. Then the guys talk about the DeMarcus Cousins trade that sent him from Sacramento to New Orleans. Sam lives in NoCal and is very familiar with the Kings franchise and has some good insight as to what the team was thinking on this move. Later in the show, USA TODAY’s AJ Neuharth-Keusch talks to former NBA player Grant Hill about how the league is in the middle of a guard revolution and his disdain for players taking games off.

With Harrison catching a DNP-hoarse, I brought in Drew Garrison on today’s show, but whatever would we talk about? It was a perfectly quiet day for the Los Angeles Lakers, right? I guess we could start with Mitch Kupchak and Jim Buss being shown the door in one of the more surprising moves in years. Or, if that wasn’t enough, the guy who will replace those two happens to have a statue out front of STAPLES Center. Oh, and the guy Magic Johnson has tabbed for Mitch’s old job happens to be Kobe Bryant’s old agent (and resident Rob Lowe lookalike) Rob Pelinka. Then, because a front office coup isn’t dramatic enough, Magic waited all of a couple hours before he made his first trade: Sending Lou Williams to the Houston Rockets for Corey Brewer and their first round pick in this June’s draft. Drew and I looked back on Jim and Mitch’s tenure, looked ahead to what this might mean both on and off the court and remind each other that without change, progress is impossible. Fun show today. It seems like you can’t go a few hours without some new report about which Los Angeles Lakers might be on the move at this point and, with only a few days left before Thursday’s NBA trade deadline, the rumors are probably only just getting started. So, with that to frame the conversation, Harrison and I spent a little while trying to figure out which kinds of the trades the Lakers should focus on. There are three types: “seller” trades, where the Lakers hope to help a playoff team in the short term and get some kind of long-term asset in return, “salary shedding” deals, in which an undesirable contract is attached to an asset to open up some financial flexibility and “buyer” trades, where the Lakers turn in some of their young assets for a known entity. Then, we react to the update that Magic Johnson and Jim Buss did not meet today, which is less than ideal. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Well, after demolishing the New York Knicks, the Los Angeles Lakers laid an absolute egg against the Detroit Pistons, losing 121-102. There wasn’t much to talk about the actual game, outside of D’Angelo Russell’s minutes, but we made do. Russell followed a 20-minute effort with a 23-minute game, which had other fans and I wondering what might be going on between him and head coach Luke Walton. Harrison was out tonight, so I brought Ben Rosales (also of Silver Screen & Roll) on to cover this and a couple other subjects. After discussing what might be going on with Russell, we spoke about what this trade deadline might look like now that Magic Johnson is in the fold. The Lakers should be sellers, but they haven’t done that historically and with Johnson now advising Mitch Kupchak and Jim Buss, it’s pretty hard to figure out how they’ll handle the deadline. Still, we tried. Finally, as we got yet another report on the Buss family dynamic, Ben and I discussed what it might mean for the Lakers moving forward. For the first time really ever, it feels like the steady hand we’ve had at GM forever might not stick around. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

The Los Angeles Lakers lost yet again, but that isn’t news anymore. No, it’s time for social media’s favorite pastime: talking about the future of Julius Randle. Oh, and the starting lineup. That has to come up, too. Before all of that, Harrison and Anthony bring up yet another unfortunate truth of the Jim Buss era: The Timofey Mozgov and Luol Deng contracts have not been... how do you put it... good. Are they another nail in Jim’s metaphorical coffin? The guys agree on this one. Where they somewhat disagree is on how best to handle the starting lineup. They both think a couple tweaks should be made, but which ones they go with slightly differ from each other. From there, they take up the Randle conversation, which seems to grip Lakers Twitter like few other things.
