The NBA's two original high school players entered the league in 1975. They were Bill Willoughby and Darryl Dawkins. They each had different levels of success, but neither were all-time greats, and it was because of this that no high school player would attempt the jump until Kevin Garnett in 1995.CREDITSRick Loayza: Head researcher, writer, and voiceJacob Loayza: Editor, producer, and publisher MUSIC"Disco Funk" by Jam Morgan"Horizons" by Roa SPORTS HISTORY NETWORKsportshistorynetwork.comsportshistorynetwork.com/podcasts/basketball-history-101/ FACEBOOKm.facebook.com/Basketball-History-101-103801581493027/ BUSINESS CONTACTbballhistory101@gmail.com
In the annals of NBA lore, former 76ers and Nets center Darryl Dawkins stands out as perhaps the most boisterous and active in perpetuating his own mythology. He was funny, confident, playful, clever, and articulate. Long before the NBA had seen the likes Shaquille O'Neal or even Charles Barkley, Dawkins was THE one-man quote machine. Not many players would name each of their dunks, let alone claim to be from the planet "Lovetron, a place where love is the only currency". Join Once Upon The Dribble as we dissect the man, the myth and the legend with a heart of gold, Chocolate Thunder. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/onceuponadribble/support

Our 40th guest on Press Box Access is the esteemed Mark Whicker, one of my all-time favorite writers and people in the sports media business. He takes us on a winding road through his career of nearly five decades. We're in locker rooms with Julius Erving, Darryl Dawkins, Pete Rose and Tug McGraw. There are late nights with a baseball GM known as “The Pope,” fan fights at The Vet, and police horses on a World Series field. Mark puts in the Forum Club for the jammed press conference when Magic Johnson announced he had HIV. He recounts a special column about Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, the fans' roar that carried Cathy Freeman to a gold medal, and what it was like at the 2001 World Series in New York weeks after the 9/11 attacks. Hear why Mark thinks David Thompson was the most important basketball player in ACC history, what it was like to witness meltdowns by Jean van de Velde and Greg Norman, and how there was menace in the Miami air on the night Aaron Pryor fought Alexis Arguello. And much more. Whicker spent the bulk of his 48 years as a sportswriter and award-winning columnist in southern California and Philadelphia. The Associated Press Sports Editors twice voted him a top 10 columnists in the nation, and he won three state Sportswriter of the Year awards. Mark received the 2014 Nat Fleischer Award, presented by the Boxing Writers Association of America for his distinguished coverage of many of the marquee fights since the late 1970s. In 2020, he was named to the U.S. Basketball Writers Hall of Fame. Mark graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1973. He lives in Long Beach, Ca., with his wife, Robyn Norwood – a former sportswriter for the Los Angeles Times (1986 to 2008) and son. Follow Mark at @MWhicker03 Learn more about your ad choices. Listen and subscribe at www.JustProWrestlingNews.com I'm Matt Carlins and this is JUST Pro Wrestling News for Tuesday, August 31, 2021. A special welcome to those of you listening on OccupyProWrestling.com. If you want to bring our updates to your website...email us: desk@justprowrestlingnews.com. (STINGER: WWE) The wrath of Hurricane Ida led to WWE postponing a SmackDown show at the Smoothie King Center in New Orleans. The SmackDown on October 1st will now be held at the Royal Farms Arena in Baltimore. The Smoothie King Center's primary tenants, the NBA's New Orleans Pelicans, announced Monday that the arena had "minor exterior damage" from Ida...and “will be prepared to host games for the upcoming season without issue”. The Pelicans' only home preseason game is scheduled for October 6th. Tonight's NXT has Johnny Gargano vs. LA Knight...Tommaso Ciampa vs. Ridge Holland...Kyle O'Reilly vs. Duke Hudson...and Roderick Strong vs. Ikemen Jiro. On last night's Raw… Nia Jax pinned the Raw Women's Champion Charlotte Flair...in a match that frankly got a little ugly at one point. Earlier in the show, Jax laid out Rhea Ripley...after Ripley had beaten Shayna Baszler. The United States Champion Damian Priest held an open challenge...which led to a 3-Way against Sheamus and Drew McIntyre. Priest prevailed...pinning McIntyre with The Reckoning. The Raw Tag Team Champs Randy Orton & Riddle beat WWE Champ Bobby Lashley & MVP to retain their titles. Riddle pinned MVP with the Floating Bro. After the match, Lashley speared Riddle, but Orton retaliated with an RKO. Also last night, Omos pinned John Morrison. AJ Styles submitted Xavier Woods with the Calf Crusher. This is the untold story of how ice baths moved from Moscow to the NBA.It was 1986. Geneva, Switzerland. Worried that the U.S. and the Soviet Union were close to World War III, Ronald Reagan announced a giant cultural exchange. Journalists, professors, and sports teams would board planes to make friends and, hopefully, bring peace. As a result, American Rich Dalatri, weeks from starting his new job as the first strength and conditioning coach in NBA history, joined a group of American coaches visiting Moscow’s secretive Institute of Sport. That’s where Dalatri slipped away from his handlers and made friends with cutting edge Russian coaches and athletes. They offered him innovative workouts, banned substances, and … a plunge into water so cold he thought it might kill him.Next thing you know, Dalatri was back in New Jersey trying to convince one of the strongest 6-foot-11 men of all time—Darryl Dawkins—to climb into a garbage can full of frigid ice water. A few decades later, almost every NBA player gets in cold tubs regularly. This is the story of how ice baths came to the NBA.It’s a sample of the TrueHoop Podcast, one of our most exciting projects, which is in development. We are thrilled to share it with you. You can hear another sample here.Image © Sergey Pesterev / Wikimedia Commons This is a public episode. Get access to private episodes at www.truehoop.com/subscribe

DWe look at the NBA players of the past who inspired rule changes large and small in the latest episode of the Over and Back Classic NBA podcast. Jason Mann and Rich Kraetsch discuss how 1930s pro basketball star Leroy Edwards inspired the 3-second rule, how the 1950s NBA dealt with superstar George Mikan and his Minneapolis Lakers dynasty by widening the paint, how Syracuse Nationals owner Danny Biasone's 24-second clock revolutionized the game, how the league tried to limit Wilt Chamberlain by further widening the lane and banning offensive interference, how backboard-destroyer Darryl Dawkins forced the NBA to switch to breakaway rims, how Charles Barkley and Mark Jackson inspired the five-second backdown rule, how the NBA tried to limit isolations because of Michael Jordan's late 1980s scoring dominance, how New York Knicks journeyman Trent Tucker change the way games are finished, and how Shaquille O'Neal's fierce dunks forced a change in basket reinforcement. We also discuss the illegal defense rule changes in the early 2000s that eventually helped open up the game from iso-heavy basketball, the Hack-a-Shaq rule, Vince Carter trying to wear earbuds, Rajon Rondo defying the NBA on his headband logo, Caron Butler not being allowed to chew straws, Reggie Miller's leg kicks and more. We discuss the most incredible NBA and ABA moments of the 1970s in the latest edition of Over and Back’s Basketball Mysteries of the 1970s. We go through some of the most exciting and clutch moments of the decade, including Jerry West's 60-foot shoot in Game 3 of the 1970 NBA Finals, Willis Reed walking through the tunnel in Game 7, Fred Carter's jumper for the Baltimore Bullets against the Knicks in 1971, a Rick Barry vs. Roger Brown duel for the ages in 1972, a Ralph Simpson game-winner for the Denver Rockets over the Indiana Pacers in 1972, Barry banking in a 3-pointer for the New York Nets over Julius Erving's Virginia Squires in 1972, Wilt Chamberlain with a clutch block of Norm Van Lier's shot in 1973 to put the Lakers in the Finals, Chet Walker hitting a game-winner for the Bulls over the Pistons in 1974, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar hitting a long skyhook in double overtime in Game 6 of the 1974 Finals, Freddie Lewis sending the Spirits of St. Louis over the Nets in the greatest playoff upset in history, Dick Snyder's runner to lead the Cleveland Cavaliers over the Bullets in the Miracle at Richfield, Erving hitting a game-winner over Bobby Jones in Game 1 of the 1976 ABA Finals, Garfield Heard's thrilling turnaround shot and other moments in triple overtime in the 1976 NBA Finals, Bob Dandridge hitting a game-winner for the Bullets over the Spurs to go to the 1979 Finals, and Darryl Dawkins shattering backboards in 1979. We discuss Kermit Washington’s infamous punch that severely injured Rudy Tomjanovich in 1977 and the NBA’s fighting culture of the time in the latest edition of Over and Back’s Basketball Mysteries of the 1970s. We look at the evolution of the NBA from a rough-and-tumble game with lots of fouling and physical play in the 1950s into more of a finesse game, how early black players with often pigeonholed into limited enforcer-type roles, how fighting was often glamorized in the lower-profile ABA but demonized in the late 1970s NBA, how the racial dynamics involved affected fans’ views of fighting, famous stories of ABA and NBA fights (including fights involving Mel Daniels, Willis Reed, John Brisker, Cliff Hagan, Warren Jabali, and Wendell Ladner), an infamous Sports Illustrated profile (http://www.si.com/vault/1977/10/31/626402/nobody-but-nobody-is-going-to-hurt-my-teammates) just weeks before The Fight looking at NBA enforcers (featuring Washington, Maurice Lucas, Calvin Murphy, Dennis Awtrey, Bob Lanier and Darryl Dawkins), how Washington’s punch of Tomjanovich was portrayed in the media and became a national story, how race informed the response and possible punishment in that case, how The Punch hung over the heads of everyone involved for many years afterward. We look at how Julius Erving’s game and persona evolved during the late 1970s and early 1980s years with the Philadelphia 76ers, where they reached the NBA Finals three times before finally winning a championship in 1983 with Moses Malone. We are joined by frequent guest and pro-basketball historian Curtis Harris @ProHoopsHistory of ProHoopsHistory.com. We discuss how Erving personified ‘70s cool from his personal style to his flare on the court, how he saw himself as an artist on the court and how he tried to blend the playground game with team basketball, how the Nets were unable to afford his contract after the NBA-ABA merger and ended up trading him to the Sixers just before the 1977 season, how the Sixers were “the team that won't shut up” and how they were seen as a group of playground players, how Erving tried to fit himself into a star-laden Sixers team (with George McGinnis, World B. Free, Doug Collins, Darryl Dawkins, Joe Bryant, Henry Bibby and Caldwell Jones), how Erving had to prove himself all over again in a skeptical NBA, how his stardom and flare influenced the NBA, how the NBA began to incorporate aspects of Erving and the ABA into its marketing through the early 1980s, whether Erving changed the NBA or whether the NBA changed Erving, how the Sixers were able to acquire MVP Moses Malone and how Erving found out while traveling in China, how Erving and Malone blended their talents for a magical 1983 season, and how the Sixers’ championship with the last gasp for the ABA generation before the NBA would fully become Magic & Bird’s league and much more! Over and Back's Basketball Mysteries of the 1970s series continues with a look at the proliferation of the slam dunk in the 1970s. We then focus on the 1970s which saw a huge rise in the use of the dunk both in the ABA and NBA including the infamous ABA Slam Dunk Contest won by Julius Erving's free-throw line dunk, Dr. J's other dunk exploits, some unsung heroes of the dunk including Gus Johnson, David Thompson, Darnell "Dr. Dunk" Hillman, "The Helicopter" Charles Hentz breaking two rims in a single ABA game, a failed NBA dunk tournament involving Elvin Hayes, Alex English, Moses Malone, Darryl Dawkins, and much more!
