Greg Brunner is an “Iowa-born, Iowa-bred” guy who just loves basketball. Greg sits down with Tim in the Moonlight Graham Studio for a basketball talk that spans AAU, the Big Ten, and two continents. Brunner's memory for teammates, opponents, and games is amazing. For every question Tim asks, Greg dives into details that will have all basketball fans pressing pause and doing some research. Greg Brunner grew up playing a lot of basketball in Charles City, Iowa and traveling with the Martin Brothers team. Brunner has stories from his time playing U15-U19 with and against big-name players like Carmello Anthony and Amar'e Stoudemire. In addition to practicing against a future D1 teammate in Charles City, Brunner discusses how going against top-level talent really drove his own progress as a player and helped get him recruiting exposure. Though he drew attention from Kansas, Iowa State, Wisconsin, and several other programs, playing for the Hawkeyes had always been his dream.   Brunner played at Iowa from 2002-2006. While many fans may remember that stretch for how it ended, it was a great time for Hawkeye basketball. Brunner finished his career with over 1,500 points and 990 rebounds. The 2005-06 Hawkeyes were ranked as high as 12th in the country and were a 3 seed in the NCAA tourney before being upset by Northwestern State. Greg and Tim talk about that loss as well as the many successes Greg and the Hawkeyes had in the early 2000s. After working out for NBA teams and being in a fight for an NBA roster spot, Brunner got the opportunity to play in Belgium and took it. After a tough adjustment in the first few weeks, Greg started to find his groove. After Belgium, he made stops around Italy, Israel, and the Swiss national team; a total of almost 20 moves for his family. His career in Europe allowed him to play in really diverse environments and with future NBA talents including Clint Capela, Thabo Sefolosha, Jonas Jerebko, and Timofey Mozgov.

The Los Angeles Lakers are finally, officially in offseason mode, having essentially pieced together what will probably be their roster come opening night. As such, this offers a great opportunity to look back on what got them to this point and look forward on what might be coming. To do so, we welcomed Mark Medina of the Southern California News Group (and even let Harrison take part in the interview.) The conversation started with the relative success in this offseason compared to years past. The front office didn’t sign Luol Deng and Timofey Mozgov to deals this year, so that right there is a great start. Lonzo Ball was almost inarguably this summer’s biggest addition not named “cap space,” so we looked back on the events that got him to Los Angeles. Finally, it’s impossible to talk about Lakers personnel without looking ahead to LeBron James (and maybe another superstar) eventually wearing purple and gold, so we tried to figure out how likely that might be: Learn more about your ad choices. It is with heavy hearts that we must announce Harrison Faigen has been traded to the Locked on Nets podcast in order to shed some salary. His time with the podcast has been great, but in the end, we want the cap space to sign Bill Simmons in the event he becomes a free agent again. The Los Angeles Lakers essentially made this exact gamble Tuesday afternoon when they dealt D’Angelo Russell to the Brooklyn Nets along with Timofey Mozgov’s contract in the hopes of clearing enough cap space to maybe have a chance at LeBron James a full year from now. Suffice it to say Ben Rosales and Tom Fehr of Silver Screen and Roll (who joined me on the show in Harrison’s stead) were not thrilled with the trade, and it wasn’t exactly like I was there to defend it much, either. We go through its ramifications both immediate and down the line, as well as what insight this might give about the new front office’s intentions moving forward. Let’s just say this is quite the gamble, and it isn’t necessarily crystal clear the payoff is worthwhile. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

The Los Angeles Lakers are within a few weeks of making their latest biggest decision in recent franchise history. For most, the choice has already been made. Lonzo Ball is the local kid who also is probably the best fit and most talented available player. Still, the Lakers will do their due diligence, and so will we. Jonathan Tjarks of The Ringer joined the podcast to talk about what the Lakers might need, fit versus best player available and how all that seems to circle back to Lonzo Ball. Tjarks also helped inform Anthony and Harrison on potential targets with the Lakers’ 28th pick. A ton can happen as the draft unfolds, but there are a couple great fits as most mock drafts currently stand. Before that conversation, the guys talk about recent reports about Jordan Clarkson’s potential availability. After Tjarks, the guys spoke about Jerry West’s interest in coming back to L.A. and Timofey Mozgov’s honesty. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Exit interviews officially signaled the end of the Los Angeles Lakers season Thursday afternoon. Much of what is to be expected to be said made it’s way into the various microphones, but there was still plenty to talk about. Rob Pelinka’s time on the mic was always going to be an adventure, and it live up to that expectation. He didn’t mention Michelangelo this time, but he did say something about the current the Lakers are on and how it will help them recruit star players. We debate whether it’s was fair to go there quite yet, but for very different reasons. Then, we covered the effusive praise for both Luke Walton and Brandon Ingram and, conversely, the relative absence of kind words for D’Angelo Russell. Finally, Timofey Mozgov and Ivica Zubac semi-intentionally threw a couple jabs at each other regarding their playing time. Fun stuff. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Earlier in the week, the Los Angeles Lakers lost a close one to the Philadelphia 76ers. Yes, the term “lost” might be being used loosely here, but still. In a game featuring a couple young cores, the D’Angelo Russell & Co. came up short against some kid named TJ McConnell. Before the game, an old tweet of mine was pulled up in which I dared question “The Process”. Duhn duhnnn duuuuuuhnnn... Thing is: That strategy of rebuilding is thoroughly fascinating and in complete honesty, we should all be pulling for Ben Simmons, Joel Embiid and all young players forced into losing situations because losing is rewarded in the NBA. As frustrating as the Lakers’ rebuild has been, compared to the Sixers and at the very least, Russell, Brandon Ingram, etc. have been on the court more often than not. In order to talk this through, I brought Ben Epstein (Limited Upside, Vox Media) on the show to compare the two situations. The conversation was great. Before that conversation, I update everyone on the goings on around the Lakers. Timofey Mozgov has been shut down. Luol Deng is probably sure to follow. D’Angelo Russell didn’t start. And there’s a central theme to how all that was handled. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Hey! The Los Angeles Lakers won a basketball game! D’Angelo Russell returned to the starting lineup, lit up the Denver Nuggets and picked up a big win before the team heads out for the Grammy trip. Oh, and that Ivica Zubac kid had the fans rolling again, which is always fun. Back to Russell, though. I had an interesting theory pop up as he was playing tonight. His vision is simply too good to not rack up assists at a higher rate. But why might that be? I touch on that, and harken back to Chris Paul’s time at Wake Forest to do so. Then, when talking about Zubac, I mention how it isn’t quite fair to have his success paint Timofey Mozgov’s contract in a more negative light. There’s plenty else to talk about there without necessarily going into logical leaps that might not make sense. Other topics include Russell/Zubac pick-and-rolls, why wins are still important and plenty more. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

The Los Angeles Lakers lost yet again, but that isn’t news anymore. No, it’s time for social media’s favorite pastime: talking about the future of Julius Randle. Oh, and the starting lineup. That has to come up, too. Before all of that, Harrison and Anthony bring up yet another unfortunate truth of the Jim Buss era: The Timofey Mozgov and Luol Deng contracts have not been... how do you put it... good. Are they another nail in Jim’s metaphorical coffin? The guys agree on this one. Where they somewhat disagree is on how best to handle the starting lineup. They both think a couple tweaks should be made, but which ones they go with slightly differ from each other. From there, they take up the Randle conversation, which seems to grip Lakers Twitter like few other things. Plenty has happened in the last two-plus weeks for the Los Angeles Lakers. Okay, all kidding aside, adding Ingram and second-round pick and fan-favorite Ivica Zubac gave the fan base plenty to be excited about heading into free agency on July 1st. The Lakers then followed that up by adding veteran players Timofey Mozgov, Luol Deng and Jose Calderon while re-signing Jordan Clarkson, Tarik Black and Marcelo Huertas. Next up now for the Lakers is a trip to Las Vegas to participate in NBA Summer League action, beginning on Friday night against Buddy Hield and the New Orleans Pelicans. The CSG studios are abandoned for the CSG kitchen as the guys fire up another tasty podcast. Nate visited the Pepsi Center on December 23rd for this third ever Avalanche game and complains about the cold environment and Ross complains about Nate disrespecting him on the South Stands Denver Fancast last week ... it must have been a total misunderstanding.  The guys talk the pros and cons of Drew Brees' record breaking performance over the weekend. The Broncos tough loss to the Buffalo Bills is disgusting or discussed rather. Nate claims the Bills Bronco'd the Broncos and Ross is enraged about Britton Colquitt being snubbed by the Pro-Bowl voters.  The Nuggets season opening blowout win over the Mavericks is discussed and some extensive player breakdowns are given out. Ross wants to see Timofey Mozgov play more and he wants the Denver bigs to foul more - as a sign of the team's toughness.  And the guys bring out the Top 5 list - this week: Top 5 Holiday Sports Wishes. What makes the cut? A Nuggets NBA Finals appearance? A Broncos playoff berth? Come listen and find out!
