Arin Greenwood describes herself as an animal writer, novelist and lawyer. Her young adult book "Your Robot Dog Will Die" was published in 2018. Arin was animal welfare editor for The Huffington Post and now writes about dogs, cats, and other animals for The Today Show, The Dodo, The Washington Post, Slate, Creative Loafing, the American Bar Association Journal and many other publications. In Sentientist Conversations we talk about the two most important questions: “what's real?” & “who matters?” Sentientism is "evidence, reason & compassion for all sentient beings." The video of our conversation is here on YouTube. We discuss: 00:00 Welcome - Kyle Johannsen episode 02:01 Arin's Intro - Dog lover, animal writer, former lawyer who has "written a couple of books" - Writing about animal welfare then working with animal advocacy and sanctuary organisations - Austin Pets Alive https://www.austinpetsalive.org/ 03:57 What's Real? - Growing up in a #Jewish family "And I'm still Jewish" - Secular Judaism "We identify as Jewish, we have a Jewish community, I had a Bat Mitzvah... we celebrate a lot of the Jewish holidays but it doesn't necessarily have a belief component to it" - Parents "go in and out of how spiritual they feel at any given moment" - "I don't feel like I know enough about the universe to say there's definitely no such thing as a higher power... lots of control and badly behaved dogs out there, so mention training, and folks sometimes get on the defensive with the whole, "I don't want a robot dog" What does that mean, you currently have an out-of-control dog and a quiet often aggressive dog.
Today I talked to Arin Greenwood about her new book Your Robot Dog Will Die (Soho, 2019). When a global genetic experiment goes awry and canines stop wagging their tails, mass hysteria ensues and the species is systematically euthanized. But soon, Mechanical Tail comes to the rescue. The company creates replacements for “man's best friend” and studies them on Dog Island, where 17-year-old Nano Miller was born and raised. Nano's life has become a cycle of annual heartbreak. Every spring, she is given the latest robot dog model to test, only to have it torn from her arms a year later. But one day she makes a discovery that upends everything she's taken for granted: a living puppy that miraculously wags its tail. And there is no way she's letting this dog go. Arin Greenwood is an animal writer and former lawyer living in St. Petersburg, Florida, with her husband, Ray, and their beloved pets. Arin was animal welfare editor for The Huffington Post. Her stories about dogs, cats, and other critters have appeared in many publications including The Washington Post, The Dodo, The Today Show's website, Slate, Creative Loafing, the American Bar Association Journal, Best Friends Animal Society's magazine, and more. She now writes and edits for animal nonprofits. Arin is also the author of Tropical Depression and Save the Enemy. Ten Things You Need to Know
This month's edition begins with a horrific story involving a police officer who was supposed to be sworn in to protect his community but instead became an abuser. We'll then move on to a concerning development in San Fran where law enforcement can now use robots to legally kill someone. The third case takes us to Arkansas where a couple perpetrated an unthinkable crime. We'll then take a look at the bizarre case of a preacher who ordered the beating and killing of his own wife back in 1988 and how this case has taken an unexpected turn recently. Finally, we have the touching story of a woman who after more than five decades of captivity was able to get reunited with her real family and reclaim her true identity.
