Fan Mail Me BrrrruuuuunnndenThe heated debate around Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) in college sports ignites as Keebler and Detto square off, dissecting the seismic shifts and enduring controversies this policy has introduced. Step into the ring with us for an episode that dares to unravel the complexities of NIL, scrutinizing the historical NCAA framework and its profound financial implications on student-athletes. While Detto shines a harsh light on what many consider to be the exploitation of college athletes, Keebler flips the script, proposing the positive spin of athletes capitalizing on their own fame. Together, we revisit landmark cases like that of Ed O'Bannon Jr., and forecast the uncharted futures of minor leagues amidst these groundbreaking changes. The reverberations of NIL extend far beyond the stadium, weaving into the critical issues of student loans and mental health crises among the young academic population. We don't just stop at the surface level; we probe deeper into the NCAA's failed attempts at antitrust exemption and the burgeoning necessity for fair regulation. Through our lens, witness the transformation of youth sports into a high-stakes game, where the innocence of Little League Baseball fades against the backdrop of profit-driven parental ambition. As we shed light on these pressing challenges, we call into question the true cost of competition and its impact on the spirit of sportsmanship.Nostalgia takes a backseat as we lament the evolution of youth sports, from the joys of Little League to the exclusivity of travel leagues. We're not afraid to stir the pot, sharing fiery opinions on participation trophies and the cultural shift they symbolize. But it's not all critical—we champion a fair compensation system for college athletes, drawing on the star power of collegiate sensations like Bronny James and Caitlin Clark to illustrate our point. Tune in to join our impassioned debate and unravel the ethical, financial, and cultural threads that are redefining the landscape of athletics right before our eyes.Come back every Tuesday for a new episode each week. The inspiration for Jonathan Capp's art comes from the experiences that shape his life. Whether hiking the Appalachian Trail, coaching Little League Baseball, becoming an archaeological illustrator halfway around the world, or competing on Blown Away, he channels those experiences into ideas and fully embraces life as a part of his art. Capps states: “I welcome new ideas and innovations in the studio, bringing fun, energy, and an inspiring enthusiasm into the hot shop.” Raised in Knoxville, TN, Capps spent much of his youth outdoors, camping, hiking, and playing baseball. After moving to Kentucky in 2001, he developed a passion for glassblowing during undergraduate school at Centre College in Danville, KY, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 2005. For the following decade, he worked as a freelance glassblower, artist, and designer, traveling extensively to learn, teach, and pursue the mastery of his craft. During this time, he received several residencies and scholarships, including Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, The Pittsburgh Glass Center, Corning Museum of Glass, Penland School of Crafts, and an International Artist Residency at Lasikompannia in Nuutajärvi, Finland. After “thru-hiking” the Appalachian Trail in 2013, Capps attended graduate school at Ohio State University and, in 2016, earned a Master of Fine Arts degree. He received several awards and scholarships, most notably a travel grant and fellowship as an archaeological illustrator in the remote Oğlanqala region of the Autonomous Republic of Naxçivan, Azerbaijan. In 2018 and 2019, Capps was awarded a U.S. Fulbright Arts Grant to research Finnish glass and design for a year in Finland. In 2020, he was chosen to serve as an Alumni Ambassador to the U.S. Student Fulbright Program; today, he continues to engage in outreach and recruitment for the Fulbright Program and Finland's National Fulbright Foundation. His work is held in the permanent collection of the Finnish Glass Museum and the Prykäri Glass Museum in addition to private collections. Capps has taught and exhibited extensively in the United States and Internationally. Throughout his career, he has worked with many glass artists and master craftspeople, developing a diverse practice that fluently moves between traditional techniques and experimental methods, pushing the boundaries and seeking new applications of the glass medium. He says: “My studio practice is rooted in the multicultural traditions of the glass craft; significantly, the physical nature of glass blowing requires reliance on others to create art successfully. For me, learning and then mastering a variety of glass techniques is where the culture behind the craft comes alive. “My work in the visual arts is rooted in the hot glass studio. My research has developed, over time, into a global practice of interdisciplinary collaboration, social engagement, and cultural exchange. I have learned that there is something in my use of the glassmaking tradition that goes beyond form and function, and enters into the realm of experience, relationships, and communication.” Most recently, Capps competed in Season 4 of the hit Netflix series Blown Away. On Saturday, May 18 at the Glass Art Society convention in Berlin, Germany, Capps will demonstrate at Berlin Glassworks from 10 a.m. to 12   – an opportunity he won on the show. From June 10 – 14, he will teach a summer intensive at the Pittsburgh Glass Center, Lifting the Veil, and present a free lecture on June 11.  He will also be the featured guest artist for this year's Gay Fad Studio's Festival hosted at the Ohio Glass Museum. https://www.gayfadstudios.com

He said the Rio Grande Valley is unique and as a result, the local workforce groups should have more discretion on what can do with the funds sent down by the state. Here are the biographies of the two commissioners that spoke:Alberto Treviño IIIAlberto Treviño III serves as the Commissioner Representing Labor for the Texas Workforce Commission. Governor Greg Abbott appointed him to the three-member Commission on January 9, 2023.  Prior to his appointment, Commissioner Treviño of Harlingen served as a retired U.S. Border Patrol agent. Treviño has nearly 33 years of combined law enforcement and border patrol experience, with 21 years of service to Local 3307 of the National Border Patrol Council (NBPC), where he served as executive vice president, and later, as treasurer.Prior to NBPC, Commissioner Treviño served as a police instructor, background investigator, and patrol officer for the Harlingen Police Department. He is a 3rd degree knight of the Knights of Columbus, former member of the City of Harlingen Tennis Advisory Board, and former volunteer for Little League Baseball. Treviño received an Associate Degree in Criminal Justice from Texas Southmost College.Joe Esparza Joe Esparza currently serves as the Commissioner Representing Employers for the Texas Workforce Commission. He and his team serve as a key resource for all Texas employers to help businesses grow and thrive in Texas.Prior to his appointment, Commissioner Esparza was sworn in as Texas Deputy Secretary of State on December 14, 2018. In addition, Esparza previously served as a Senior Appointments Manager in the office of the Governor, overseeing numerous gubernatorial appointments during Governor Abbott's first term. A graduate of Texas Tech University, Esparza earned a Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Communications. Esparza received an Honorable Discharge from the United States Marine Corps and is a Veteran of the Global War on Terrorism, having served in Iraq.South Texas College's 2024 Workforce Summit was held in the Student Union Building of STC's Pecan Campus in McAllen. Here is an audio recording of everything the two workforce commissioners said on the panel. To read the new stories and watch the news videos of the Rio Grande Guardian International News Service go to www.riograndeguardian.com.

Welcome to a new episode of Land-Grant Holy Land's I-80 Football Show. On this show, we talk about all things Big Ten football and basketball from New Jersey to California. With USC and UCLA joining the conference in 2024 we'll integrate them in the show getting a head start on the 16-team conference. After every week of action, we will catch you up on all the conference's games and look ahead at the matchups, storylines, and players you should be paying attention to next week. My name is Jordan Williams, and I am joined by my co-host Dante Morgan. In this episode, the guys finish up their realignment talk, hopefully, as we're all ready to move on to the season and talk ball. Arizona, Arizona State, and Utah are in the Big 12, Arizona and ASU might be a wash but the Big 12 may have made a mistake letting Utah in, Jordan expects them to compete for the title immediately. There was a lot of parity in the Big 12 before adding Utah but if they continue trending upward they have a chance to dominate their new conference. As for the four schools left out, Cal and Stanford are hoping for a lifeline from the ACC which is the only power five conferences not to make any moves in the last two years. The ACC is considering adding Cal, Stanford, and SMU but will likely need to add a fourth team if this is the case. Appalachian State anyone?  Finishing out the Middling Tier, Dante and Jordan break down the 2023 season outlook for Maryland and Purdue. Purdue enters 2023 coming off the best season in program history in which they broke out and won the West Division. Unfortunately, after their season, they lost Head Coach Jeff Brohm who went back home to coach at Louisville. They also lost their starting quarterback Aidan O'Connell and star wide receiver Charlie Jones to the NFL draft. First-time head coach Ryan Walters will be tasked with continuing the success Jeff Brohm had which will be a tall task. Walters hired Graham Harrell, an air raid disciple as his offensive coordinator which is a sign they will continue to sling the ball all over the field but with a much better defense as Walters is one of the best young defensive minds in the country. Maryland enters 2023 coming off their best year under Mike Locksley and the last year with Taulia Tagovailoa under center. Tagovailoa took a step back statistically last year, he was still arguably the second-best quarterback in the conference, but Maryland still won eight games. They lost a lot of good players including first-round corner Deante Banks but they should return an above-average defense. If Taulia can continue to throw for around 3,000 yards and 25 touchdowns, with the emergence of sophomore running back Roman Hemby, Maryland should win a bunch of games again. They're still far away from challenging Michigan and Ohio State but everyone else should be a winnable game for the Terrapins.  In their pitstops, Jordan talks about the difference between the Little League Baseball and Softball World Series and Dante thinks the NBA is getting less competitive because non-star players are making too much money.  ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Follow the show on YouTube: @JordanW330 and @LandGrantPods Connect with us on Twitter: Jordan: @JordanW330 and Dante: @DanteM10216 Subscribe: RSS | Apple | Spotify | Stitcher | Google Podcasts | iHeart Radio Learn more about your ad choices. When the 11- and 12-year-olds on the Cannon Street YMCA all-star team registered for a baseball tournament in Charleston, South Carolina, in July 1955, it put the team and the forces of integration on a collision. White teams refused to take the field with the Cannon Street all-stars, the first Black Little League team in South Carolina. The Cannon Street team won two tournaments by forfeit. If they won the regional tournament in Rome, Georgia, they would have advanced to the Little League World Series. But Little League officials ruled the team ineligible to play in the tournament because they had advanced by winning on forfeit and not on the field, denying the boys their dream. This became a national story for a few weeks but then faded and disappeared altogether as Americans read of other civil rights stories, including the horrific killing of 14-year-old Emmett Till.Chris Lamb, author of The 1955 Cannon Street YMCA All-Stars and Little League Baseball's Civil War (2022, University of Nebraska Press), and John Rivers, who played shortstop on the All-Stars, join Walter Edgar to tell the story of the Cannon Street all-stars.
