Seven city council wards have held their DFL conventions so far (1, 2, 4, 5, 8, 12,13). We have endorsements in five of them - several with North Korea margins. Caucus season is almost upon us. It's your chance to become a superlobbyist and wield influence with local candidates on behalf of the issues you care about. Josh Martin joins John to talk about why you need to get involved and why there's no reason to feel intimidated by the process. We're talking about the story of the unsuspecting flower shop owner who says she had little interest in politics for most of her adult life, until the county started planning the reconstruction of Lyndale Avenue. Before you know it, in 2024, she had made a donation to MAGA (the Republican party of Minnesota). Then in 2025 she's running a local PAC (We Love Minneapolis), teaming up with Mayor Frey's former campaign manager, with a mission is to turn people out to the DFL caucus. Is this raising any red flags? We're also talking about the violence interrupting preacher Jerry McAfee who threatened violence against members of the city council; then made dramatic pronouncements about how he doesn't preach non-violence; but was nonetheless all set to receive a $640,000 contract for violence interruption work -- until two of his violence interrupters were arrested for their actions during a shootout. And a stupid human interest story: A Minneapolis firefighter is running for city council. But along the way he'll be forced to overcome the fact that he plagiarized a portion of his website from a candidate running for city council in a different ward. Complicating matters, he forgot to delete the other candidate's name from the plagiarized text. We'll also be taking a look at candidates for mayor and city council, with a particular focus on the competitive wards.Information on the April 8 Minneapolis DFL caucuses: https://minneapolisdfl.org/Watch: https://youtube.com/wedgeliveJoin the conversation: https://bsky.app/profile/wedge.liveSupport the show: https://patreon.com/wedgeliveWedge LIVE theme song by Anthony Kasper x LaFontsee

Dear Johnny, My husband, Josh, had an accident at work in 2015. He works for a small drywall company and the scaffolding he was on tipped over and he fell 15 feet. He broke his wrist, cracked one heel and shattered the other. After 19 surgeries and a few years later he is a below the knee (left leg) amputee. We did not have health insurance, but were covered by workers comp for upkeep on his prosthesis until about 2 years ago. He went back to work as soon as possible for the same drywall company. He needed a new mechanical foot for the prosthesis last year and our prosthetic people are awesome, and got us set up with a payment plan which we finished about 2 months ago. Now from wear and tear and his leg slightly shrinking, he needs a new socket, which is more expensive than the cost of the foot we just paid off! We both work full time. I work in nursing and he works in construction, but it still leaves us paycheck to paycheck. Without a new socket he won't be able to work, and without both our paychecks I'm afraid we will lose everything. The socket for his prosthesis now doesn't fit his stump properly anymore, and due to the day after day he is getting sores on his leg and working while in constant pain. I just want him to be able to work comfortably and not risk another infection that could get even worse. Merry Christmas and thank you for reading my letter. Any help at all would be more than appreciated. Thank you, Catie Martin Who helped: Billy Brimblecom & Steps of Faith, Cosentinos How you helped: New prosthetic socket, groceries

We kick things off with results and analysis of Don Samuels vs Ilhan Omar in the 5th congressional district primary. Josh breaks out his google docs. We list all the factors working against Samuels in 2024, compared to his previous campaign in 2022. We cover Katie Jones's victory in Minneapolis's only competitive state legislative race (house district 61A) - and what the results can tell us about Council Member Katie Cashman's Ward 7 reelection campaign in 2025. Taylor joins us for the second half hour, delivering her unique brand of tabloid political coverage. Which 61A campaign turned down the endorsement of Mayor Jacob Frey? Jason Garcia, aka Hot Dog Larry Jacobs, joins us to do podcast punditry while attempting to eat 12 hot dogs for charity. Josh Martin makes sure the score-keeping stays honest. In this groundbreaking 90 minute episode, we talk about the race for Minnesota House of Representatives in 61A. Frank Hornstein is retiring, creating a vacancy for the first time in decades. We're trying to answer the question: Why do even people who agree with Will Stancil think he's incredibly irritating? John gives his strongest possible endorsement of Katie Jones. Jason tries to choke out an endorsement of Isabel Rolfes while eating yet another hot dog. We're also talking about Don Samuels underwhelming, backward looking, unfocused campaign against Rep. Ilhan Omar; we review crime stats and react to the Minneapolis Police Department's plan to expand their gunshot detection microphones, known as ShotSpotter, into the Wedge and Whittier neighborhoods; Josh has an update about an effort to move St. Paul's elections for mayor and city council from odd years to presidential years; and so much more. If God doesn't exist, then how can you tell a good movie from a bad one? We ask ourselves this while attempting to review EYES FRONT, an extremely stylized feature from prolific music video director turned Christian film auteur Darren Doane. We first learned about Doane from his work on KIRK CAMERON'S SAVING CHRISTMAS, which Doane directs and co-stars in as a man who is missing the true spirit of Christmas. Doane seems to have an ability to pull more “famous” names than we're usually accustomed to seeing in faith-based features; Michael Madsen stars in EYES FRONT, playing a gritty narrator on the run from the law after he kills his wife in a rage and dumps her body in the trunk of his car. His story is intertwined with the life of another murderer who was clearly inspired by American Psycho and is portrayed by Christopher Stapleton (not to be confused with the singer of the same name.) We also see this character kill out of rage, go on some cynical rants about his ex-girlfriend and how vegetarianism is stupid, and finally lash out once more at his identical twin brother who is a devout Christian. When two murderers and two twins' lives intertwine at a final showdown in a diner, you won't believe what happens next, and the reason you won't is honestly because the story kind of degrades here and it's very hard to gauge what is going on. Despite this, we appreciate a Christian film that is genuinely different than all the others we've watched, especially one that uses swears, including the dreaded “f-word”. Our friend and Christian music expert Josh Martin (Uncomfortable Brunch) returns to the show for the 3rd time to help us give this film some necessary context, especially with regards to its jam-packed soundtrack. Hi everyone! Chris Blair here with another episode of Stories Behind the Songs. My guest this week is the amazing Adam Sanders. Adam has played the Listening Room stage quite a bit throughout the years, has written tons of songs for some great artists, and makes music of his own with an EP entitled “Like It's Your Last” out now and a full album being released on February 2nd. Like most of our guests, Adam is a songwriter here in Nashville with cuts for Cole Swindell, Dierks Bentley, Scotty McCreery, Dustin Lynch, Blake Shelton, and more. He was one of the writers on Cole Swindell's “Ain't Worth the Whiskey” which became his first number one. We're going to talk about how he got his start in Nashville writing with Cole Swindell and Josh Martin before any of them made it big and takes us into the writers room when he wrote “Ain't Worth the Whiskey”. You'll also hear about the process of that song going to radio on the same week as “Hell of a Night” cut by Dustin Lynch. Apart from his successes as a songwriter, Adam talks about writing meaningful songs that tell a story and what his goals are in the industry going forward – both with writing songs for artists and making his own music. Keep an eye out for Adam's new album out next month and give him a follow to stay up to date. The restructuring of of power at Minneapolis City Hall in 2021 turned out to be a bigger deal than people realized at the time. Now the unelected (judicially appointed) Minneapolis Charter Commission seems ready to give voters another ballot question that would concentrate power in the mayor's office: reducing the number of city department heads subject to a confirmation vote. Potentially affected departments include directors of Public Works, Planning, Civil Rights, Health, Regulatory Services. Josh Martin joins me to talk about why certain members of the Charter Commission feel this change is necessary. We also talk about why we think it's a terrible idea that voters should be giving attention to early, before it sneaks up as a question on your 2024 ballot. This proves to be slightly different than past cult discussions and leads to a winding conversation about small towns, churches, and how unhealthy power impacts beliefs and behaviors.

This week's episode is exclusively about the Modoc, the ship of the Earthrace conservation that ventured among the Chinese Overseas Fleet of squid fishing vessels to film documentary footage highlighting the global overfishing problem. We interview Jack Bundle and Josh Martin, two crewmembers of the Modoc, about how they got involved with Earthrace, their experiences working on the boat, and what life was like day-to-day. (0:30-36:30). We then talk to Captain Pete Bethune, the captain of the Modoc, about the genesis of the project, the operation of getting the film crew aboard one of the fishing vessels, and how the documentary footage was shot. (36:35-59:38) Note - this episode does include descriptions which may be troubling to some listeners. Please listen with a note of understanding that fishing, especially commercial fishing, can be a dangerous business. ~Reminder~ Free Descent is intended as entertainment, and not to replace formal dive instruction. So, we watched the newly restored version of THE DOOM GENERATION at a screening for Uncomfortable Brunch. We dragged fellow completionist Josh Martin (the facilitators of this screening) to chat about what we saw and "uncovered" in this short wrap up.
Welcome back to another episode of T&J! This week we get a fantasy update that somehow leads to a life lesson from the life of Josh Martin. We then discuss the tragic events that are unfolding around, both personally and globally. This leads to a discussion about the state of the world, the theological concept of depravity, and where the world is heading. By looking at the doctrine of sin and depravity, we build on last week's discussion while focusing on the trajectory of the world and how we need to view this as a Christian. As we have previously mentioned, we ultimately discuss the need to focus on the hear and now in conjunction with the future as we live out Christ to the world. We hope you enjoy!

Have you ever felt like “the new kid”? How did you handle that?Dr. Friendtastic says that common ground is where friendships grow. What does that mean to you? What are some ways to find or create common ground with other kids?Which activities have you done that have been most helpful to you for making friends?Being kind doesn't guarantee that someone will become our friend. Why is it a good idea to be kind, anyway?TRANSCRIPTHi, I'm Dr. Eileen Kennedy-Moore, an author and clinical psychologist based in Princeton, NJ. Today we have a visit from a member of Dr. Friendtastic's Friendship League. The Friendship League is made up of adults who care about kids and who have volunteered to share with you some memories from when they were a kid about a friendship rough spot they faced plus a kind thing a friend did for them. Let's listen! What's up?! Josh Martin here, the voice of Dragon Ball Z's Majin Buu. I have been asked by Dr. Friendtastic to share with you a couple of my experiences with friends when I was a kid. The first one that comes to mind was a rough spot that I had with a friend or should I say “friends” because I didn't have any because I was the new kid in school you know obviously that is a rough time. I don't know if you've ever experienced that or not, but I'm sure you've at least known the new kid and known how awkward that can be. Well, it was the same for me, but I was able to get through it with honesty and being myself and being considerate of others. You know, I was the new kid. I couldn't be expected to just hop in and be a part of the group. I took my time, paid attention, and eventually, I found those friends that liked the same kind of movies and music. I got into a play and, you know, the rest is history! Some of those friends are still friends to this day! That brings me to my second experience, which was when a friend did something nice for me. And, because of the way that I've always been– honest, truthful with everyone and myself… Boy, I've done the same for others and they've done the same for me. I've been invited to swim parties, vacations, go to the lake, you know, or just over for ice cream, or spend the night, or whatever. You know, I've been fortunate to have a lot of friends do a lot of nice things for me, and they continue to do that. And I believe that's because being nice, being honest, being considerate, doing what you can for others…you'll get it back, No, I'm no doctor. Listen to Dr. Friendtastic…or I'll turn you to chocolate and eat cha! Hahahaha!Wow, Josh! You covered so many important ideas about friendship.A lot of us have been “the new kid.” My family moved a fair bit when I was growing up, so I know how hard it can be to feel like an outsider! I like how you took your time and looked around to find kids who had similar interests to you. That common ground is where friendships grow. And getting involved in the play… What a great idea! Kids make friends by doing fun things together. So, even though it might feel uncomfortable at first, getting involved, doing activities, or working on projects together are all great ways to make new friends or deepen the friendships you already have. I also like how you emphasized being honest and kind. We tend to get back from the world what we send out. Kindness is definitely the key to friendship. And for you, it opened up lots of fun opportunities. Being kind to someone doesn't guarantee that person will become our friend, but it shows that we're open to friendship, which can be a good start. And it also makes us feel good to know we're doing the right thing. I'll be back next week with a question about friendship from a kid. If you have a question about making and keeping friends that you'd like me to answer, go to DrFriendtastic.com, and click on the podcast tab to see how to submit your question. And be sure to check out my books for kids about friendship: Growing Friendships: A Kids' Guide to Making and Keeping Friends, and my new book, Growing Feelings: A Kids' Guide to Dealing with Emotions About Friends and Other Kids.
