This week on the GovNavigators Show, Adam and Robert sit down with the GovNavigator Network's Josh Martin, former Chief Data Officer for the State of Indiana turned founder and AI practitioner, for a candid, highly practical conversation about what AI can (and can't!) do in government today.Josh shares how he's building AI-powered tools to solve real-world problems, like instantly preparing for vendor meetings or streamlining procurement reviews, and explains why AI's biggest value isn't replacing people, but accelerating decision-making. He also offers a clear-eyed warning: agencies that over-automate without human oversight risk serious errors, hallucinations, and reputational damage. We dive into how governments can responsibly adopt AI, the importance of understanding data and prompting, and why “personal responsibility” is the missing ingredient in most AI strategies. Josh also reflects on his transition out of government, what he misses, and where he sees the biggest opportunities for innovation across the public sector.Show Notes:Partial DHS funding measure passedHouse Oversight advances nine anti-fraud billsDoW strikes new AI deal with major companiesNew EO pushing fixed-price contractingWhat's on the GovNavigators' Radar?May 2-4: Professional Services Council Annual ConferenceMay 5: AGA's Performance Counts SummitMay 6: Service to America MedalsMay 14-15: ACT-IAC's Emerging Technology & Innovation Summit

Taylor Dahlin and Josh Martin join me for a conversation about something none of us has witnessed before: a mayoral appointee getting voted down by the Minneapolis City Council. On Thursday, Todd Barnette failed to secure the majority vote required to be reappointed as the Commissioner of Community Safety. Mayor Jacob Frey says the council's action has nothing to do with Barnette's job performance; the council is simply acting to spite the mayor. In reality, as we discuss, there is plenty of fault to find with Barnette's tenure. Plus we blow your mind with the philosophical question: can a mayor veto the absence of an action? We also talk about the successful reappointment of City Operations Officer Margaret Anderson Kelliher and City Attorney Kristyn Anderson. In the second half of the show we go into detail on the Minneapolis Charter Commission's attempt to eliminate the public hearing and confirmation process for a handful of mayoral appointees (Civil Rights, Regulatory Services, Health, and Assessor's Office). If approved, this proposal would be decided by voters via a ballot question during this year's general election. This is an idea so bad, it's uniting people from across the political spectrum against it.Email all 15 members of the Charter Commission using the addresses found at this link: https://lims.minneapolismn.gov/boards/chartercPublic Hearing on the Charter Proposal:Wednesday, May 6, 2026 Wednesday, May 6, 20264:00 PMCharter CommissionRegular MeetingLocation: Room 350, Public Service Center250 S 4th St, Minneapolis, MN 55415Watch: https://youtube.com/wedgeliveJoin the conversation: https://bsky.app/profile/wedge.liveSupport the show: https://patreon.com/wedgeliveWedge LIVE theme song by Anthony Kasper x LaFontsee

Writing this blurb is difficult. I've tried rewriting it at least three times, and I'm at the point of failing to explain myself, my partner, and the guy who's putting the film on at Sunray Cinema in Tampa on Saturday, January 17th, 2026, as part of Uncomfortable Brunch! We should all be disgusted with ourselves for enjoying it. Speaking of Uncomfortable Brunch, friend of the podcast Josh Martin joins us for this discussion!A film by Todd Rohal (anyone familiar with his work will know how messed up it is) and based on the comic by alternative cartoonist Johnny Ryan, this is a dark, mean-spirited comedy about a young man's mother meeting a woman and her child, and what ensues is carnage. Utter, utter carnage.Hold onto your seats with your clammy palms, my friends, this is a "bumpy" ride that is definitely for ADULTS ONLY!

For years, a small but vociferous online community of ranked choice voting truthers have held firm to the belief that there's a way to game the system. Some say if we rank our ballots, not according to our preference, but in a way that communicates the correct password to the ancient aliens who run our elections, we can gain an advantage for our desired candidates. On today's episode I challenge my guests, Todd Schuman and Josh Martin, to reveal the secrets of RCV. Unfortunately, Todd and Josh are gatekeepers who never stop insisting those secrets don't exist. They say we should rank our ballots in a straightforward way, according to our candidate preference.Watch: https://youtube.com/wedgeliveJoin the conversation: https://bsky.app/profile/wedge.liveSupport the show: https://patreon.com/wedgeliveWedge LIVE theme song by Anthony Kasper x LaFontsee
Most gym owners love referrals — but what happens when warm leads run out? The real challenge begins when it's time to win over cold traffic.Welcome to the Gym Marketing Made Simple podcast — built for boutique gym owners who want to consistently attract members and grow revenue without taking on the full-time job of being a marketer.Episode HighlightsThis episode breaks down the reality of marketing and sales in boutique gyms with Josh Martin. The team explores Lasso's proven system for lead generation, nurturing, and conversion — and why success depends on consistency, follow-up, and mindset. From handling rejection to understanding conversion rates, this conversation is all about following a proven process that works.Key TakeawaysLasso stands for Lead and Sales System Optimization, a structured approach to generating and converting leads.Warm leads often convert easily, but cold traffic requires patience and persistence.A realistic conversion rate from leads to sign-ups is 10–20% — and that's perfectly normal.Consistent follow-up and long-term nurturing are key to turning cold leads into paying members. The system works best when followed as designed — deviating from it reduces success rates.Having an open mind to change existing methods is essential for growth. The “fortune is in the follow-up” — success comes from consistency, not quick wins.Episode Chapters00:00 Intro00:10 Challenges of Cold Traffic vs. Warm Leads05:26 The Importance of Following the System09:11 Handling Lead Conversion and Rejection12:11 The Role of CRM and Long-Term Nurturing18:17 The Importance of Sales and Follow-Follow-Up19:48 Challenges of Cold Traffic and Emotional Reactions22:02 Common Mistakes and Misconceptions25:12 The Importance of Data and Proven MethodsCall to ActionIf this episode hits home, follow the podcast and share it with a fellow gym owner who's ready to grow the right way. I'm joined by my authoritative bald-headed friend Josh Martin and Taylor Dahlin (aka Rondi Arradondi) for an examination of the wildest, weirdest Minneapolis DFL convention in recent memory. Omar Fateh is your DFL endorsed candidate for mayor. This convention hit so hard that the most normal thing to happen all day was Scott Graham (congressional district 5 DFL chair) getting kicked out of for allegedly calling a Jewish arena worker a "Nazi" after Graham attempted to smuggle food into the arena. Electronic balloting difficulties, delay tactics, and a mind-numbing series of speeches from 20 park board hopefuls took the convention to the 11th hour before everything fell into place for mayoral challenger Omar Fateh and a slate of progressive, union-backed park board candidates. Helping things along was a disastrous strategic decision from Mayor Frey's campaign to pull all their delegates in a last ditch attempt to deny quorum (or simply cast a cloud over the legitimacy of the proceedings). This tactical decision devastated the chances of a bunch of park board candidates who are Frey's ostensible allies -- because his campaign pulled their delegates from the convention, all of the remaining park board endorsement votes went against the Frey faction. One of the DFL endorsed candidates for park board, Jason Garcia, joins us in this episode.Watch: https://youtube.com/wedgeliveJoin the conversation: https://bsky.app/profile/wedge.liveSupport the show: https://patreon.com/wedgeliveWedge LIVE theme song by Anthony Kasper x LaFontsee

Caucus season is almost upon us. It's your chance to become a superlobbyist and wield influence with local candidates on behalf of the issues you care about. Josh Martin joins John to talk about why you need to get involved and why there's no reason to feel intimidated by the process. We're talking about the story of the unsuspecting flower shop owner who says she had little interest in politics for most of her adult life, until the county started planning the reconstruction of Lyndale Avenue. Before you know it, in 2024, she had made a donation to MAGA (the Republican party of Minnesota). Then in 2025 she's running a local PAC (We Love Minneapolis), teaming up with Mayor Frey's former campaign manager, with a mission is to turn people out to the DFL caucus. Is this raising any red flags? We're also talking about the violence interrupting preacher Jerry McAfee who threatened violence against members of the city council; then made dramatic pronouncements about how he doesn't preach non-violence; but was nonetheless all set to receive a $640,000 contract for violence interruption work -- until two of his violence interrupters were arrested for their actions during a shootout. And a stupid human interest story: A Minneapolis firefighter is running for city council. But along the way he'll be forced to overcome the fact that he plagiarized a portion of his website from a candidate running for city council in a different ward. Complicating matters, he forgot to delete the other candidate's name from the plagiarized text. We'll also be taking a look at candidates for mayor and city council, with a particular focus on the competitive wards.Information on the April 8 Minneapolis DFL caucuses: https://minneapolisdfl.org/Watch: https://youtube.com/wedgeliveJoin the conversation: https://bsky.app/profile/wedge.liveSupport the show: https://patreon.com/wedgeliveWedge LIVE theme song by Anthony Kasper x LaFontsee

Dear Johnny, My husband, Josh, had an accident at work in 2015. He works for a small drywall company and the scaffolding he was on tipped over and he fell 15 feet. He broke his wrist, cracked one heel and shattered the other. After 19 surgeries and a few years later he is a below the knee (left leg) amputee. We did not have health insurance, but were covered by workers comp for upkeep on his prosthesis until about 2 years ago. He went back to work as soon as possible for the same drywall company. He needed a new mechanical foot for the prosthesis last year and our prosthetic people are awesome, and got us set up with a payment plan which we finished about 2 months ago. Now from wear and tear and his leg slightly shrinking, he needs a new socket, which is more expensive than the cost of the foot we just paid off! We both work full time. I work in nursing and he works in construction, but it still leaves us paycheck to paycheck. Without a new socket he won't be able to work, and without both our paychecks I'm afraid we will lose everything. The socket for his prosthesis now doesn't fit his stump properly anymore, and due to the day after day he is getting sores on his leg and working while in constant pain. I just want him to be able to work comfortably and not risk another infection that could get even worse. Merry Christmas and thank you for reading my letter. Any help at all would be more than appreciated. Thank you, Catie Martin Who helped: Billy Brimblecom & Steps of Faith, Cosentinos How you helped: New prosthetic socket, groceries
We kick things off with results and analysis of Don Samuels vs Ilhan Omar in the 5th congressional district primary. Josh breaks out his google docs. We list all the factors working against Samuels in 2024, compared to his previous campaign in 2022. We cover Katie Jones's victory in Minneapolis's only competitive state legislative race (house district 61A) - and what the results can tell us about Council Member Katie Cashman's Ward 7 reelection campaign in 2025. Taylor joins us for the second half hour, delivering her unique brand of tabloid political coverage. Which 61A campaign turned down the endorsement of Mayor Jacob Frey? Which Timberwolves star doesn't pick up the phone when candidates come calling? Why is the Majority Leader of the Minnesota House so humorless? All that and so much more. Jason Garcia, aka Hot Dog Larry Jacobs, joins us to do podcast punditry while attempting to eat 12 hot dogs for charity. Josh Martin makes sure the score-keeping stays honest. In this groundbreaking 90 minute episode, we talk about the race for Minnesota House of Representatives in 61A. Frank Hornstein is retiring, creating a vacancy for the first time in decades. We're trying to answer the question: Why do even people who agree with Will Stancil think he's incredibly irritating? John gives his strongest possible endorsement of Katie Jones. Jason tries to choke out an endorsement of Isabel Rolfes while eating yet another hot dog. We're also talking about Don Samuels underwhelming, backward looking, unfocused campaign against Rep. Ilhan Omar; we review crime stats and react to the Minneapolis Police Department's plan to expand their gunshot detection microphones, known as ShotSpotter, into the Wedge and Whittier neighborhoods; Josh has an update about an effort to move St. Paul's elections for mayor and city council from odd years to presidential years; and so much more. Don't forget to vote in the primary by August 13, especially if you live in 61A.
